- wilburx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28usb 1.1 vs. usb 2.0
- lavar78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27He meant 1G as in 1st generation.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.
This thing will never fly. - Cyrus89, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24is that comic sans font? *shudder*
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It's been a great 5 years.
- goro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18most players (i know because i had the creative blue thing he actually showed in this video) had usb1, not usb2, and those numbers are accurate.
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Were you born in 2001 or can you just not read? It's a LOOK BACK
- jwerner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I believe the typeface used in the pesentation is Chalkboard, Apple's version of Microsoft's Comic Sans.

- Jeduthun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Mistaking Spanish for French is like confusing Apple and Microsoft.
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8funny how skeptical people were with the iPod in 2001... "we don't need another one of these in a flooded market".... can you say the same thing about the Wii? will it turn out the same way? i love how history repeats itself... and so soon in the tech world
- Laton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You have succumbed to Steves Reality Distortion Field. http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Reality_Distortion_Field.txt
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7he is such a good presenter -- he had me genuinely excited about a 5-year-old piece of technology!
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Saw this video a few months ago ... 3 days later I ordered an iPod. This guy's marketing skills amaze me. He's very persuasive.
- synchestric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's how the market goes. Apple went for the strategies that could progressively implant them the most in the market. I think that restricting just a handful of people to actually be able to use iPods in the beginning was a cautious move before going really mainstream.
Hi-speed USB wasn't around in 2001, so the only connection with similar performance was indeed Firewire and clearly Apple were going for performance. But the iPod became so popular that most owners were in fact PC users, and Firewire isn't as widespread as USB in that segment, so they had to make chances. The fact that newer iPods don't even support data transfers through Firewire (they still support Firewire charging BTW) is due to the ubiquity and performance of the USB 2.0 interface, which corresponds to a really large user base and the performance objectives they set in the beginning. - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No one gets the original slashdot quote this guy is saying. This is a quote, folks.
http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/10/23/1816257&tid=107 - 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its crazy how he nailed the market in that speech.
- bot001220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Durable my ass."
I bet your ass can take a beating ;p - walden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Did anyone else notice The Beatles album 'hard day's night' featuring prominently RIGHT behind steve job's head. This is the ONLY time I have seen a beatles album used in ipod advertising. Apple meets APPLE. whew. I bet that's probably where all the legal trouble began! Anyways, ... I have an ipod mini that has the entire beatles catalogue loaded onto it, ... and it is COOL !
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7My first thought when it came out was "iPod? What kind of STUPID name was that? This thing will never sell!".
Oh well. - fizzeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"it's like confusing chinese with arab."
Well, Chinese is actually not the name of the language. The main was is called Mandarin.
And Arabic is a language name, an Arab is a person who probably speaks Arabic. - davori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This thing looks like a brick compared to my 5G :D iPod all the way i say, they got it right from the beginning with the easy and intuitive User interface.
- JakeWalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For a real laugh, have a look at Slashdot's comments on the day of the release:
http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/10/23/1816257 - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys all got it wrong!! It's like confusing apple's with oranges ;)
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, Apple's market capitalization is over 100 times that of Creative, so yeah, it's a small company.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its funny to listen to him bragging about how thin it is when the video is almost 2/3 thinner. i can imagine 5 years from know we will be laughing at how ugly the ipod nano and video were.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8it's like confusing chinese with arab.
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@boredzo -
I think that was everyone's reaction at the time. I know I was thinking it would be a flop. Of course, just a month or two later I bought one... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Big stuff for the time. It's great because we know what the ipod is today, and how far its come. The 1g ipod now just looks a little ridiculous and under equipped for the price.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty cool to watch. I think the iPod was one of the only products out there that set out to be a big seller and market leader from the very start.
"iPod has apple design"
Man. . .that sure was saying a lot. . . - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i think he was joking maybe..
- benliong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can see that Jobs was really excited about using the firewire to charge the ipod while data goes through it. Honestly, it was a really good design.
I remember the days when I was charging the MD Player, and all sorts of cables just suddenly surrounds the little player itself. - UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's interesting that he calls the iBook and PowerBook of 2001 "portables" instead of "laptops", considering recent temperature issues.
- yellowperil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gah!
- yellowperil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry man, but... I cant believe that. I didnt even know the first gen batteries can last that long.. unless you swapped it with a new battery. And how can a first gen ipod thats 5 years old last longer than a third gen ipod thats advertised to last only 8?
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude, i still own and USE my 1g iPod... it still gets 8 hours of battery life
i do have a 5g though... - Zm3r3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+210hrs?? Err you sure?
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@yellow peril...
my 1g 5gig iPod still gets 8 hrs of music - iandotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, everything looks so primitive, and this was only 5 years ago!
- synchestric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Heh, you reminded me of the discussions that took place on /. back then. It's really weird to read some in retrospective.
- p51boy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still use my 10GB 1st Generation iPod, I use it more for the music in my car then anything else. The thing still works just fine and supprisingly still gets 9-1/2 to 10 hours on a charge. It's insane that the thing's almost 4 years old now...
- gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Put ipodlinux on it and you can have even more fun with it!
http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's an overview of the whole event: http://www.macworld.com/news/2001/10/23/event/
- lavar78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@thejokell (hey, BTW)
It wasn't everyone's reaction at the time. As the frustrated owner of a Creative Nomad, I saw right away what made the iPod special: portability, battery life, and a good UI. I bought one immediately and have been satisfied ever since. - Jeduthun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I don't think so. Spanish and French both come from Latin. They share a lot of the basic language structure."
Absolutely.
"If you want a better analogy say it's like confusing English with German".
I don't think so. English and German both belong to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages, and ultimately descend prom the same protolanguage. However, you are correct in that their differences are generally greater than those you may encounter between Spanish and French.
Anyway, confusing Spanish and French is, at the very least, a proof of cultural shallowness.
So, basically, my advice to stlcadet11 is "if you don't know what you're talking about, just shut it up" ;)
But then again, if everybody followed this, the Internet wouldn't be as interesting as it is today. - Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I preordered my iPod right after this. :) Still works today.
- yellowperil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19 hours? are you freakin nuts? I think steve jobs reality distortion field is warping your sense of time. My last ipod lasts 4 hours... its 2 years old. Apple even says that their batteries, after 18 months of use will drop to 50% efficiency. And I have a third gen ipod, and that thing was said to only last 8 hours... am I missing something here?
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this guy had a vision.... god bless, i love ipod!
