- GirlsGoneWeed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27the 029 one is real nice~
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16That's one of my favorites too! I like iPhone 028 and 001 too.
I think iPhone 028 most closly resemples the multi-functional hand-held device patent that Apple filed recently. In which the the user can select what function they want the device to be from a menu, and then the whole UI of the device radically changes to look like the device you want to use!
E.g. if you choose "phone" from the menu, the existing clickwheel on the device appears to dissolve off ths screen, and numbers appear in its place, the device now looks like a cellphone. If you choose "games", then the numbers dissolve, and are replaces with the gaming set-up. Maybe you have to turn the device on its side. Now on the left side of the screen appears a plus controller, and on the right you have a, b, x, y. You can then download those games through iTunes for use on the iPhone, with this gaming set-up the games would appear in the centre of the screen.
Now I am guessing the way they implement the patent in the device, but the patent does suggest all the things i've said. - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9@Ireland
That's to complicated for an Apple product. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I agree, I think 029 looks most like something Apple would come up with.
- fartingbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5#29 doesnt have a microphone at the top, something like that might need some modifying...
But it does look very nice.
#22 looks very interesting, although it would probably be a pain in the ass to use if they ever made something like that, although no where near as nightmarish to use at number 12 would be! - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Even if they were real, I can't imagine any of these being affordable phones.
I don't have a cell phone. I would consider one if Apple really released one. *But* not if it exceeds $200...
I mean. It's just a phone. I'll stick with my landline phone at prices like that. It's not as if I'm out and about all day long. Even if I was, I'd be afraid to carry something so expensive on my person.
Before someone preaches about me needing one when I'm older, just remember I'm already 21+. :) - jongam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Klisk
A majority of new phones on the market today cost more than $200. The new RAZRs for example are around $500 retail value I think. Devices like the Treos and Blackberries are more in the range of $700-$800 retail. The only reason you get them so much cheaper is because you sign a contract with your provider. I suspect Apple will have a partnership with one or more providers when/if they finally do release their phone. It will probably be around $300-$400 out of pocket price. Retail price will probably be a few hundred more.
And before anyone asks me for sources for the Apple phone price, I really just made it up. It's an educated guess. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4@klisk:
You are so far from Apple's demographic you have probably never seen an iPod in real life. If you don't even own a cellphone, it's surprising that you're even posting here.
I guess the Amish *do* have the internet now. ;) - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@popfrogs
Why is it surprising I'm posting here? I like videogames, and AD&D.
Also, I have a 5th gen 30gb ipod. :) I got it through freeipods.com. I could take pictures of it if you want, with my, gasp, digital camera. Which I got through, gasp, newegg. For $70. :)
I'm just cheap.
I work out of home, and don't drive. Is it surprising I don't have a cell phone? If I did get one I'd have to cancel my landline phone. But I currently don't see the point in doing that as much as my friends bitch at me to get a cell. - evangelion01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You sir clearly have a horrible taste, 007 all the way baby.
- ophello, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0029 FTW. All the other designs lack the simplicity of Apple.
However, if I were the designer, I would get rid of the digits and call/hang up buttons and stick to just the scroll wheel.
Why? Apple is known for getting rid of the familiar, and making their products easier and simpler than whats out there. If they opted for a voice-commanded system and a simple iPod scroll interface, or even included a touch screen, theyd stay in step with their design philosophy while offering something new to the market.
Every iPhone concept i have seen thus far includes an array of buttons and adjusters. I just dont see it going down like that.
If apple is consistent, they will design something no one had even thought of.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16That's one of my favorites too! I like iPhone 028 and 001 too.
- eleven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Just submitted my iPhone concept to their site, hope it makes it up.
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/6199/iphoneminiiz1.jpg- eleven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Okay I did 2 more "fun" designs as well.
The other one is my favorite, but the 2 below are cool in their own "special" ways:
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/268/iphonelq7.jpg
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/9736/iphoneshufflepd7.jpg - SeptBoot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1absolutely beautiful, just gorgeous.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I think the biggest problem with all of these designs is that they only use earbuds/headsets, which the average person hates.
Also, the ones that have build in speaker/mic, they require you to put your greasy face up against the screen. Not exactly the greatest design idea. - alecperkins, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Looks very much like the Samsung t509 (as do some of the others):
http://www.t-mobile.com/images/products/Samsung_t509/370x400.jpg - trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Looks very much like the Samsung t509 (as do some of the others):

Hey, that looks very much like any phone....
- eleven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Okay I did 2 more "fun" designs as well.
- ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Headline is about as crafted and coherent as most of the designs, sorry, DESINGS.
29 is awesome though. - emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Seems to me that a slider phone is most likely.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Wake me up when the REAL PHONE shows up. Actually... don't!
- echinthaka, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Can we please change the spelling mistake in the title of this message from Desings to designs
- gpan, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3Buried for bad spelling.
- ColBuendia, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Lord. D-E-S-I-G-N-S.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19wow, there's some really horrible desings on that page.
028 & 029 are the only two halfway decent concepts - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I didn't see any that actually looked plausible or coherent with the general design line of Apple (or should I say, Jonathan Ive)
- spiderfish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2IMO he got it right in first attempt
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Desings must be the verb for those horrible ringtones.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope its an implant, then people will really think I am crazy when I start talking to myself.
- borb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love the first one. Some of them are terrible though.
- Xfactor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Those are some cool designs, I like 022, and some others. But I agree with Dog, it does seem a little to complicated for an apple product. If apple were to consider a iPhone, I think it would be smarter for them to pair with a major company. Like Nokia, because everyone knows, Nokia makes the best phones.
- Pissoff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I am hoping for something like 009, looking like a normal ipod only having phone features when you expand the center. ( I dislike the slide down keys from the bottom displayed in some of the other examples. )
This is the device I've been waiting for since 2003. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I like #17.
- moorey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3This is still the best one so far (iChat Mobile), real or fake:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/02/ichat-mobile-is-it-the-iphone-part-forty-bajillion/- drastick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The iChat looks way to long to me. Where in the hell would you put that thing? If its not really as long as it appears then that would mean the screen would be pretty small... Maybe its just me...
- Enchirito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lol at 012
- miestersean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Those numbers are so terribly placed...can you imagine dialing on that thing?
- gozasc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I can't wait for Apple to release the initial model of said "iPhone," wait two months, and then turn around only to release a black version that for some mysterious reason costs three times as much.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Quite a few of these are really terrible.
- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I actually find that #018 looks really nice.
I'd like to see the iPhone taking on its own personality instead of just being an iPod with a cell phone shoved in it. - zaren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How nice of this site to pull an ebaum.
They lifted a ton of their pictures from Isama Sanada's design site, stripped off his watermarks, and put their own on. For example:
http://www.apple-style.com/laboratory/pict_05iphone_r03.html
and
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1759/667/1600/iphone_017.jpg
Others lifted from his design site were iPhone 08, 014, 016, 023... all with his name and recognition rights stripped off and theirs put on instead.
So, if I may say again:

Error 403 - zaren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@popfrogs:
*shrug* Link works here. Maybe your pipes are full.
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Sweet second link there friend:
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I notice a lot of the designs rely on a shiny finish. Let's hope if Apple opt for a shiny finish they make a good job with the material to make them scratch resistant. Ever noticed how few scratches there are on your phone?
016 is my favourite. :-) - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My three favs: 29,28,and 1
How is 005 a phone?!
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1759/667/1600/iphone_005.jpg
more like an UMPC
24,20,18,16,14,12,11,10 are either ugly or nonpractical in design. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3002: Looks decent but the volume in an iPod is controlled by the ClickWheel. Apple wouldn't put separate volume buttons on it
005: Doesn't even look like a phone
007: Wow, I don't think my fingers are quite small enough to use that one
008: Looks more like a Casio Calculator than an Apple product
009: pretty neat, even though it looks like the buttons were stolen from the RAZR
010: easily the ugliest one of the bunch. The fact that it's based off the first-gen iPod makes me wonder how long these iPhone rumors have been around. Are we going to see a NewtonPhone next?
018: nostaligic, from the G3 era, interesting concept
020: looks more like a WMP mini-player skin than something from Apple
022: looks more like it's from Creative than Apple.
I like 028 and 029 the best.- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i Think #22 looks more like a cowon rather than creative.
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i Think #22 looks more like a cowon rather than creative.
- amoo3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3168733759916419298
I still think hats the best one.- ddcrandall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1man...that's hot. though, i still think apple would never have the clickwheel on the opposite side of the screen. it just doesn't make sense.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not this again!!
- Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Aside from the volume buttons, 002 looks the most logical and the most like what Apple would probably do for a phone.
- pookpooi, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Good concept. But I prefer iZune.... Hehehe...
LOL Please don't digg me down.- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Do you really think that if you say "don't digg me down" people are going to digg you up?
I'll say...
DIGG ME DOWN and see what happens
- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Do you really think that if you say "don't digg me down" people are going to digg you up?
- makingme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow...i'd buy one. Although, I like the traditional device to ear better than the headphones. Personally I don't care for having music on my phone. If I'm listening to some good tunes and someone calls, I'd be ticked off. lol.
- Omar12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2They are nice concepts.
One thing for sure, this is going to be like the Razr, everyone will have one and will stop being cool. :-(- ddcrandall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Why do things stop being cool when they become popular? That's just ***** ridiculous. Either you like it or you don't. Your phone doesn't have to be indie to match your music.
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@ddcrandall:
Because by definition, cool isn't mainstream. Cool is slightly underground, subversive, youthful. If everyone is doing something, it loses its cool.
By now, the iPod isn't even cool, it probably stopped being cool about 2 years ago. Nothing has come out that has been deemed cooler, though, so the mainstream still considers it cool.
I can't remember what movie had the line "once my parents started getting into it, it wasn't cool anymore" but nothing has ever been more true. - shuffle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Then "your" definition of cool is definitely dated. Grow some self esteem and enjoy things for what they are, not for who else likes them.
- JamesK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What you're talking about is fake cool, er, Cool Whipped (tm).
Truely cool people don't care if other people think it's cool.
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why do they all have to look like iPods?
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Just like everything Apple.. In one word ...consistency.
- Mannon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like #18, flip phones is actually kinda nice :)
#11 would have been really nice, but not as simple as Apple would want it...
#29 would probably be an iPod with phone features :p like that one too :D
Dugg - JestaMcMerv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess everyone who designed those phones has never used a cell phone in their life. I'm sure apple will be quick to know that texting is in, and it do anything on its phone except make the keypad easy to text on. Those phones there, no way could you text on any of them.
- JestaMcMerv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually some of the phones did seem to have alright keypads, my comment was meant to say that I'm sure apple will do something that makes texting easier.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3What the Apple iPhone will really look like:
"
"
i.e. nothing. Its vapourware. - apeatling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1most of those are brutal, apart from number 1, I bet that will be close to the final design.
- edred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The first one is the best for sure; simple, sleek and sweet, everything we have come to expect from an iPod.
- nate5182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I like 18 the best, but 29 was cool too
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I guess I get to be the bad guy today and point out the misspelling in the topic. Should be designs. Yes I know I'm pointing out the obvious. I'm not a perfect speller either and yes I do make a lot of typing errors. However I found a really good reason to upgrade to Firefox 2 RC1.. The built in spell checker has.has been saving my butt for the past 24 hours. I predict when everyone (hopefully this means all Digg users) will upgrade to Firefox 2 when it is released. I think will see about 75% of all misspellings go away. :)
Sorry to go off topic, but I felt this had to be said. :) - squison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would hope apple comes out with a few different ones. The idea of #28 is cool -- with the 2nd screen switching depending on what you're doing (scrollwheel for tunes, keypad for phone and maybe a qwerty for texting).
I also wouldn't mind seeing a Treo-ish type one like #7, but the keyboard needs work.
I also like the flip-out keypad in #1 and #13, and the screen is nice on #13 too.
Most are pretty, but it comes down to whether or not they can squeeze the components in the shiney case and make it all work. Kudos to Apple if they can do it. - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1different points of most of them should be used in one phone
on the whole, the list there is full of fairly bad looking designs. - mk32066, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like #23. But is there any proof that Apple is even coming out with an iPhone. I remember seeing some vague patents, but does anyone have some more information?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1028 and 027 are the same phone. Very cool how the click wheel and the keypad appear depending on the function you are using. This would be a brilliant use of touch sensitive display technology. Imagine playing a game where the touch pad changes into a game control pad specific to the game.
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2013 seems quite like a sony ericson walkman phone
i think 025, 012, and 010 are just PLAIN UGLY! - Ishtumba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Could someone do me a favor and explain what exactly 024 is?
- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Pretty much the iDildo of the group...
- ahdanielsan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, imagine my surprise when I realised that the girl in 29 is a friend of mine!
- iigloo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think this one is the best, looks more phone like than any other...
http://www.apple-style.com/laboratory/pict_05iphone_r01.html - JayBachatero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1#029 and 028 are the only two that actually look real. I prefer 029 though.
- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I think the real questions are:
1.) How will they make it easier to scratch up?
2.) In what interesting way will it discolor where you touch it?
3.) How can they make the batteries more explosive?
Mod me down if you LOVE Microsoft and HATE Apple and everyting it stands for!- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1And I almost forgot...
4.) Where can the factory leave a thin piece of plastic to block airflow to make it overheat?
5.) Can you use it to cook eggs like a MacBook without a firmware upgrade?
6.) Can they link it up to those retarded-looking blue-tooth headsets or will they invent their own retarded-looking blue-tooth headset? Perhaps they could call it the iTooth?
- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1And I almost forgot...
- BuddhaManFizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i know its maybe a little radical but-
to avoid putting your face against the screen, the audio in/out could be like the earbud headsets. no external microphone or anything, just the earbuds that would also function as the microphone, this already exists, i have one, it works reasonably well. you could seamlessly switch between listening to music and answering calls that way, though it might look like your talking to yourself while listening to music...- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good idea, then if you loose your headset or if it breaks, you can buy a whole new iPhone! Or at least won't be able to place or receive calls until you can get a new headset.
- BuddhaManFizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nobody said you couldn't still use it like a normal phone. i was simply commenting that if you could change the audio jack to one similar to those found on cellphones while preserving sound quality, you would solve one of the fundamental flaws with the idea of the iPhone
- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You said: "... no external microphone or anything...".
That means "you can't still use it like a real phone". - BuddhaManFizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no, read the previous sentence, i meant on the headset... "no external microphone or anything, just the earbuds"
-duh - BuddhaManFizz, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Chalk it!
