- thenome, on 04/27/2009, -4/+58Let's face it Verizon has better coverage in the US (especially the midwest) no matter how you look at it... let's bring the iphone to more people.

buried inaccurate - Chairboy, on 04/27/2009, -1/+31I've heard that Verizon has better coverage and superior customer service. On the other hand, I've seen them lock down functionality in phones and then sell it back to the customer piecemeal (like the ability to bluetooth ringtones to a phone, etc, you have to pay them extra for that).
Either way, more carriers would be a win. I've got friends who love Verizon who want an iPhone, and switching carriers is a pretty big deal. - nato0519, on 04/27/2009, -2/+29After they crippled my Razr's bluetooth never again. I wonder how Verizon will go about destroying the iphone like it has with every other phone it offers. Verizon go to hell cause its the only place your service belongs.
- teamgwho, on 04/27/2009, -1/+21Verizon = best network, ***** phones
everyone else: cool phones, ***** networks.
//sigh - Louay, on 04/27/2009, -3/+23looks like ill be keeping my old verizon phone for ANOTHER year in anticipation for a verizon iphone
- spiritamx79, on 04/27/2009, -1/+18Dig me down, but doesn't big red like to lock their phones down? Unless VZW keeps their paws off, I would never buy a phone on VZW.
- manutdfan539, on 04/27/2009, -8/+25That would be sweet -- I can't get a phone unless it's on verizon.
- Freps, on 04/27/2009, -1/+16No.
- Trekhawk, on 04/27/2009, -0/+14They already tried this partnership, but this only exhibits what happens when the irresistible force meets the immovable object.
- Galaeron, on 04/27/2009, -0/+13Why? So Verizon can lock it down and force you to pay for proprietary software just to use certain features?
They might have an awesome coverage network and ill admit I can only think of two places I've been that I don't get service. But if I can't use my phone to its full extent I dropped 300+ bucks on then whats the point? Hell I can't even see my GPS cords on my phone thanks to there proprietary crap. It hasn't bothered me at all until I got a "smartphone" and found out it is only as smart as Verizon will allow it to be. I can't wait for my contract to be up :(
If Verizon was smart they would stop locking down the phones they get and allow you to do whatever they want on them. Then everyone would flock to them. But no, they want to find ways to squeeze another dime out of you. - Solkre, on 04/27/2009, -0/+12Keep the "V" ***** off the phone and you have a deal!
- Trifold, on 04/27/2009, -0/+11iPhone on verizon? Well, goodbye wi-fi. But otherwise, good news I guess...though didn't AT&T have it exclusive for 5 years or something?
(Apologies if it was in the article, I'm on IE at work and endgadget keeps crashing it.) - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -3/+13Verizon reports earnings tomorrow morning and it may struggle a bit compared to AT&T's good earnings. USA Today got played to goose the stock.
- wassim2k, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10Maybe, with Wi-Fi and GPS blocked and less internal memory and a Vcast application that must be used for anything you want to do. 12 iPhone apps would be available from the "Verizon" store and that's it.
- rstarr, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10I love how ever single person who has ever had a cell phone has ideas on which carrier they hate and that charges you "hidden fees," has terrible customer service, and has "crappy coverage." NEWSFLASH: Every carrier has fee's associated with just about everything, customer service reps are human with their own discretion so some may be different then others, and coverage areas are ideal at best. Everyone either has one great experience and one terrible experience with one or two individuals with a company or one billing issue with their plan that they didn't understand and completely brands an entire corporation as evil compared to the flock. I just can't understand how people can have such fanboyish arguments on carriers who are all overcharging for things and misrepresenting their coverage area.
- charlief, on 04/27/2009, -0/+9whatever... this type of article comes up every 6 months...
- 80hd, on 04/27/2009, -0/+9Verizon has great coverage, it just sucks that everybody else has good phones.
If Verizon had taken Apple up on the iPhone the App store would be 'get it now' with about 100 apps with none of the being free or written in anything but Java, maps would cost extra, youtube would have swapped out in place of ***** Vcast.
I'd hate if mail, weather, youtube, maps, safari etc were all 'extras' and each had a separate monthly fee. instead of just using the data plan and I bet that is exactly how Verizon wanted to make it happen. - enchanterku, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8I just switched from Verizon to AT&T, and got an iPhone. I live near Ann Arbor, and I had horrible Verizon reception, constantly dropping calls, etc. Now I have full signal almost everywhere I go, as well as 3G. And as far as technical support has gone, I've had good experiences with both. Just my two cents.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8***** this man, they gonna do to the iPhone what they did to the HTC Touch Pro. I was so disappointed when I got my HTC...
- ttsupra26, on 04/27/2009, -2/+10via-Bender Bending Rod: Even when Verizon does get an LTE network up and even if it has the same coverage as their current 3G (CDMA200) network an iPhone for Verizon will still need to have CDMA and CDMA2000 chipsets to fall back on. The idea that any handset manufacturer would release a device that only has one radio type for a burgeoning network type is just shortsided and ignorant at best.
More importantly, we don't have any radios for LTE that will work in a phone. The tech is too new. First, we get USB and EC/34 cards for notebooks where the size and power drain is less of an issue. Then we get it for smaller devices. To think that the thinnest smart phone on the market will be getting LTE next year is just someone at Engadget not thinking this through. - rstarr, on 04/27/2009, -0/+630 bucks, same as everyone basically.
- brendond, on 04/27/2009, -3/+8Isn't their typical data plan like $40... ***** that noise.
- 80hd, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5Once the contract with AT&T runs out I can see this happening. Verizon was the first contact (or so) when the iPhone was in development and my guess is that those jerks wanted to lock everything down and replace every Apple App with Vcast or get it now and make sure nothing works unless there is an extra charge for it.
- boozedrinker, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5Verizon won't release something they can't put their ***** proprietary OS on.
- eliasg, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Perhaps you haven't left the country? The US isn't the only country with cell phone service. It makes much more sense to create a GSM-based handset that will work throughout the entire world than to create a CDMA handset that will only work in select countries.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -4/+8I hate AT&T. If this is true, thank you Apple.
- keithnoir, on 04/27/2009, -3/+7The lack of sim card is going to make the Verizon version (if there is one) inferior.
- ihavebeenseen, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4700 Mhz FTW
- rrife, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4They'll just raise their prices to offset any reduction in profit.
- Braxo, on 04/27/2009, -1/+5I think this may a situation where Apple tells Verizon what to do instead of Verizon dictating to Apple.
- bigsheldy, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4this is exactly what Verizon will do. Everyone needs to be giving this a thumbs up...***** Verizon.
- EtherGnat, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3I have a Verizon smartphone and it has uncrippled Bluetooth, wi-fi, a camera, and I can use whatever music I like. It does cost about $70/mo. but it's worth it for the better coverage (and I get an 18% discount on Verizon anyway). The only thing I can think of that's disabled on my phone is tethering, and Apple/AT&T seem to be discouraging that as well.
- runeasgar, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4The real problem here is how backwards America is.. it's just like the metric system.. here we are with better CDMA coverage than GSM, and the rest of the world just laughs at us. Sometimes I feel like we insist on being different as if we're trying to prove some kind of asinine point about our independence.
- Hardataq, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Verizon is like the great phone graveyard.
- jdames1980, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3I live in Lansing and have an iPhone. My partner has a Verizon phone. I have no problems with reception, but he misses calls and voicemails all the time. I'm definitely not impressed with Verizon in Michigan anyway.
- FearlessFreep, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4Verizon customer service screwed me over too many times trying to get a land line installed in an apartment in Maryland. Never again
- FOR3MAN, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3I have no issues at all with ATT, but the Iphone is so nice let them all have one.
- Toymachine227, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4yeah but how much will this bill be every month?
- fifaigor, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Verizon sucks
- crazzy88ss, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3*Looks around for bruce almighty*
- protodon, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Verizon is expensive as ***** for every single thing they offer. When people say they have verizon, I can never understand why. I guess they like paying more money and buying 3 dollar ringtones... as opposed to not buying ringtones.
- fakesinatra, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3The Verizon iphone is only a good thing if it forces the price of the AT&T iPhone rate plans down a little via competition.
- MacEnvy, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3@Firehunter
The GPS on the Blackberry Storm works with any app, but the A-GPS functionality is locked to Verizon's Navigator app. - TheNik, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4Verizon isn't THAT stupid, though. The iPhone is a gold mine unlike any other phone they offer. The Blackberry Storm flopped so we know they have no other choice. Supposedly the reason it wasn't originally on Verizon was because Verizon wanted to do what they normally do and Apple said no... I'd hope Verizon wouldn't make that mistake again.
- InorganicMatter, on 04/27/2009, -3/+5Yeah, and it'll have crippled Bluetooth, no Wifi, no camera, use vCast instead of iTunes for music, cost $70/month for the voice+data plan, and $5/month extra to enable the GPS and App store. No thanks.
- runeasgar, on 04/27/2009, -1/+3I'll take at&t's poor coverage (luckily it's superb over my entire city) over Verizon's phone lockdowns.
- SpinningHead, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Open to everyone = competition = lower prices
I saw an Australian web site with plans through different providers starting at $40 Aus - wazzledoozle2, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2AT&T's 3g tech is based on the same standards as verizon's, CDMA. Difference is AT&T uses an outdated GSM (TDMA) network for voice & CDMA for 3g data, while verizon uses a proprietary CDMA network for both data and voice. AT&T's 3g network is slightly better, but has less coverage.
