- 9bpm9, on 08/27/2008, -18/+156It's true. Internet on the iPhone isn't even close to a real internet experience.
- belmikey, on 08/27/2008, -6/+96While I'm not sure it was worth pulling the advertisement, those complaining have a point. Apple claims good technical reasons why they didn't include Java or Flash, and I agree with them to a point. However, I note that the Crackberry not only supports Java, but essentially *is* Java, and does just fine.
- stigmataman, on 08/27/2008, -4/+93Flash and Java are so integral to the Web that it is misleading to say you have the full Internet on the handset. To most people, YouTube is just a Web site, and the tech behind it is just magic
- wildsnake, on 08/27/2008, -3/+84It sucks not to view my favorite websites on the iPhone. They require the Flash plugin.
- pyrates, on 08/27/2008, -2/+74Sun and Adobe have wanted to add java and flash to the iphone for quite sometime, but Apple has denied them due to the iphone sdk terms of service. And it's not a technical limitation either. I remember when there was a time when you could embed quicktime movies in flash.
- trogdor282, on 08/28/2008, -4/+62Bottom line, you can't promise it if you don't deliver it.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -4/+60bad couple of weeks for apple... welcome to the premiership, steve
- alexkball, on 08/27/2008, -9/+54Good. I'm glad some people out there are still unwilling to bow at the altar of Jobs.
- LumpOfCole, on 08/27/2008, -1/+37It's a little close, but it still has a ways to go. I'd rather have a Safari that doesn't crash with resource-heavy websites than Flash first.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -4/+33Is this a surprise to ANYONE??? You cant look at the iPhone television commercials for any amount of time, then look at an iPhone and think that Apple is being honest in their advertising... you just can't..
- insomniacal, on 08/27/2008, -2/+31Simplification is a virtue; oversimplification isn't. Keep it straight, Apple.
- jeffkee, on 08/28/2008, -6/+32Yes, the internet was created on the basis that we can cut and paste... :P
But yeah the lack of cut/paste function pisses me off a lot. What also pisses me off is the fact that on a Mac, I cannot cut-paste files - I can only copy paste and then remove the old one, OR have windows open for both start and end points. If we can take the strengths of both PCs and Macs and put them into one.. and then do the same with Crackberries and iPhones!!! - Pake, on 08/28/2008, -2/+28Buried for misleading title. UK advertising standards are strict and if you claim something, you had better back it up. By putting quotes around the word "misleading," the article misleads the reader into believing the UK is wrong.
Now, if only we could adopt some of those standards over here in the US. - foolfoolz, on 08/28/2008, -4/+29Lets see someone get them on the "half the price" ***** next.
- sirbeta, on 08/28/2008, -3/+26At least one country is reacting to shifty advertising. I especially like the one where Apple says its Mac upgrades are free, and it's PCs that costs money to continuously upgrade. Did they forget charging people money for all the OSX upgrades, and only having small windows of time for free upgrades if you bought your Mac just before the new upgrade comes around?
I don't hate Apple, but I do hate their advertising. - sparksalot, on 08/28/2008, -3/+24"When contacted by the ASA, Apple said it built the Safari web browser on the iPhone using open standards, and that it could not reasonably assure compatibility with every third party plug-in or technology on the market."
Every third party plugin? There are hardly any, and Flash is probably the largest out there! - Shaman760, on 08/28/2008, -1/+21So, get to supporting those "little-known third party plugins" called Flash and Java.
- ZigVicious, on 08/28/2008, -0/+19the UK has very strict rules and regulations about what can and can't be said in adverts, they can't mention competing products or things like that.
It's completely different from the american "look ours is better/bigger/faster then theirs" style of advert. - jeffkee, on 08/28/2008, -3/+22"After the new release of the iPhone 2.1 software, which supports flash and flash video playback, an increasing number of masturbation in public spaces such as libraries and subways have been reported...."
- powatom, on 08/28/2008, -0/+18Political ads in the UK, and indeed the whole election process, is based far more on the party as a whole rather than the leader - although it doesn't stop the occasional mudslinging match. All in all we focus on policy and party rather than personality and charisma.
- zip000, on 08/28/2008, -2/+20I have no idea what took you a minute, but it occurs to me that making your comment:
"Took me a minute, very nice."
...about comments that have absolutely no hidden meaning would be very funny. People would read and reread the comment to find the inscrutable hidden joke only to eventually give up and feel dumb.
Hilarious.
Of course, now I'm giving up and feeling dumb because I have no idea what the joke in wildsnake's comment is. - batmanz, on 08/28/2008, -4/+20Why do people feel a need to defend the iPhone? It's a product with strengths and flaws. Internet on it is mostly a flaw, get over it.
- ashwinmudigonda, on 08/28/2008, -1/+17Jeez! They have standards for ads there! If they saw our presidential ads, I wonder what they would think.
- BeardDob, on 08/28/2008, -2/+17"all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone."
- EarlOfLade, on 08/27/2008, -6/+21Great!
Advertising should be honest, what Apple (and many others) are doing, is to lie and obfuscate. This type of action is common in civilized first world countries due to a better set of laws, designed to protect the consumer and not to protect the seller. But it's not so common in the rest of the world, the uncivilized part, no matter which world it belongs to. - mixomatosys, on 08/28/2008, -2/+16do you, by chance, live in 1998?
- kenvsryu, on 08/28/2008, -2/+16paint it white and some won't care.
- Derelict267, on 08/28/2008, -4/+17I suspect they don't want you playing flash games, then you won't be buying their own games.
- gcnaddict, on 08/28/2008, -1/+14WatW, leaving the Reality Distortion Field might help you not look like a fool.
- gcnaddict, on 08/28/2008, -0/+12Buried because the entire ***** point of Safari on the iPhone was to avoid using mobile versions or "iPhone friendly" versions of websites.
- Murdats, on 08/28/2008, -3/+13A lie is a lie no matter how many people realise it.
would you want an ad to keep running if it said the product cured cancer, instantly gave you $5,000,000 and would make you breakfast every morning just because hardly anyone realised it was lying? - powatom, on 08/28/2008, -0/+10Since when is it politically correct to not allow massive corporate ***** to lie to their prospective customers in order to generate profits?
A lie is a lie - and Apple lied in their advert. Now they face the consequences, which means forking out to create a new, accurate advert. Boo ***** hoo - it's not like it's going to break the bank for them. - feliks2, on 08/28/2008, -5/+15Most serious websites? Are you ***** kidding?
- mctom987, on 08/28/2008, -2/+11gay Pronunciation[gey] adjective, -er, -est, noun, adverb
–adjective
1. having or showing a merry, lively mood
"gay." Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc. 27 Aug. 2008. . - HolyChimp, on 08/28/2008, -0/+9It costs the same in the UK... we don't all get shafted by our phone companies.
- stix213, on 08/28/2008, -2/+11Having to make iPhone friendly versions of websites because the iPhone doesn't display the normal website properly is exactly the opposite of what Apple is claiming in their ad, and you are actually backing up the UK's point.
Special iPhone versions of websites != access to "all parts of the internet"
When Apple produces an iPhone that doesn't need special versions of websites (meaning it can actually display the same page that a PC displays) then Apple's claim would be valid. - Tenoq, on 08/28/2008, -1/+9I'd say all the 'Think!' ads regarding speeding should probably be banned in the UK then. Showing that pedestrian getting hit because you're doing 5km/h over the limit is very misleading - realistically, if you were going 5km/h over the limit consistently, you would have missed that 'blind' pedestrian by 30 seconds or a minute. :p
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+9And nothing of value was lost.
- ErickStevenson, on 08/28/2008, -2/+10Isn't this a good thing? I think this should be for every products... false adverts sucks in any form... just as bad as spam.
- secrity, on 08/28/2008, -0/+8It depends upon the site, it sucks if you are on a site that uses java and your browser dosen't have it.
- gl77, on 08/28/2008, -3/+10"oh thats a load of *****! Apple can do no wrong and the iphone is the best piece of technology ever created!!! wahhh!!"
/Apple fanboy - mctom987, on 08/28/2008, -2/+9I was hoping it would be for something like "half the price" since it actually costs more. But either way works for me.
- Red1Delta, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8redtube and youporn.....
- scabbers, on 08/27/2008, -8/+14Too bad the ASA doesn't agree with you, fanboy.
- Kohaxx, on 08/27/2008, -3/+9Took me a minute, very nice.
- fuse13, on 08/28/2008, -3/+9"Most serious developers make iPhone friendly versions of their sites anyway"
no we dont. and we have a lot of mobile devs. - Gee1004, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7They don't claim, including all the ads to have a full feature internet browser.
- hakz, on 08/28/2008, -2/+7so carry on lying? You say they have a point, but you want apple to keep the ad running?
- sowhat5828, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Or make it shiny...
- ErickStevenson, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Yah would be great if it was like that here in the US.
