- sysoprock, on 12/21/2007, -16/+82In other news, Apple has made 15 million friends of iPhone owners "really jealous."
- superbaka, on 12/21/2007, -3/+57If you want exclusivity, put your iPhone on ebay and buy a Treo. You'll be the only one left with one soon.
- mdavis, on 12/21/2007, -7/+59But-but-but-people on digg said the iPhone would fail!!
- zeejay, on 12/21/2007, -4/+39The iPhone outsold ALL Windows mobile devices in Q3 in north america, combined, Steve Ballmer said last January that the iPhone wouldn't get more than 2-3% marketshare, and that MS would attain 60-80% marketshare. Wrong on both fronts, dude.
- brickbat, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3216gb would be nice but uncrippled bluetooth and gps would be better.

http://9to5mac.com/5-million-iphones-4235654546345 - Alphapsi12, on 12/21/2007, -12/+43I'm a contract engineer for Apple not a mindless fanboy and I must say that even with all "wish list" missing features from the phone, 400 dollars is really not that expensive. Granted it cost little over $200 of material (not including price of labor, transport, advertisement budget, overhead, ETC.)to produce the product, take a look at what you are getting with the iPhone. Touch sensative optical quality glass screen with multi-touch (name another phone that can do that), an iPod Touch, SDK in Feb, MP4 player, safari, OSX, ETC.
- DonCarcharo, on 12/21/2007, -4/+30So true. My wife can't stand smart phones. I've been using them for years and she's been blatantly mocking me the entire time. Then I get an iPhone and mysteriously her Moto Razr breaks three days later. Since she's "forced" to replace it she figures she might as well get an iPhone. Imagine that.
But it doesn't end there, we both take our iPhones to our friend's house. He's a notorious hater of everything and anything Apple, including most users of Apple products. You know the type, he won't buy an iPod on principle. So anyway he mocks our choice in phones and provides a list of reasons why the iPhone is inferior to his Windows mobile phone. I then encourage him to actually try the phone. He does. Two weeks later we stop by for Thanksgiving and he gets a call. Guess what? He's using an iPhone.
It's like a disease... - lharrod, on 12/21/2007, -2/+24...and the fact that it's restricted to one carrier. These factors would have killed most phones. They can only go up from here.
- CraigJ, on 12/21/2007, -4/+26So, basically, you are defined by what you think others think about you based on the phone you carry. I use an iPhone because I like the way it works, and I appreciate the design. I couldn't care less what someone thinks of me based on my cell phone.
- Wormfather, on 12/21/2007, -0/+22I'd prefer the iphone shuffle, like I need to know who I'm calling, pft.
- FoxOrian, on 12/21/2007, -1/+22Sounds like you bought your iPhone for the wrong reasons. It's the annoying people who buy stuff for bragging rights.
- llsethj, on 12/21/2007, -2/+21...or will sell by Macworld on Jan 15
- luchid, on 12/21/2007, -4/+21You can't expect to have a phone that competes with others on the 400 quid range functionality wise and pay only 50 quid for it.
I want a Mercedes Benz for only 2000 pounds! - postalblowfish7, on 12/21/2007, -6/+23...and said the zune was an 'ipod killer.' woops.
- luchid, on 12/21/2007, -2/+18Wow, your username leads me to believe that you're a zit-faced 12 year-old in your mother's basement.
- RegalGSX, on 12/21/2007, -6/+215 million iPhone sales IS amazing, given its cost, the fact that it's a first-generation product, and the market is fiercely competitive.
- fupresti, on 12/21/2007, -4/+19God forbid someone enjoy a product and not be a fan boy, right? I happen to love my iPhone. You don't want one, great. But don't mock me because I enjoy using it and find it appealing.
- CraigJ, on 12/21/2007, -3/+18I remember hearing this is 2002 about another device...
- meatmcguffin, on 12/21/2007, -3/+17Original content, witty humour and just some excellent spelling of the word 'turd' there.
Your parents must be so proud. - insertAliasHere, on 12/21/2007, -1/+14I've always loved the term "iPod Killer." That's like saying "Kleenex Killer," "Band-Aid Killer," or "Pop-tart Killer." A real ipod killer would have to do more than just have a few more features. It would have to be absolutely revolutionary, and then the maker would have to market the hell out of it.
- MacParrot, on 12/21/2007, -1/+14flamebot...please stop. You make sane Mac users look bad with that nonsense
- kreatre2007, on 12/21/2007, -0/+13Ballmer is notorious for talking out of his ass and ramming his foot down it at the same time. I never take anything he says seriously.
- subliminalurge, on 12/21/2007, -0/+13I'm holding out for the 7 terrabyte model.
- insertAliasHere, on 12/21/2007, -1/+13Looking at his comment history:
"RON PAUL FOR NAZI AMERICA 2008"
"But will they blend?"
"sounds like BS"
"i was hoping for a video of the rape. title is misleading."
...I think you nailed the guess about his age, luchid. - inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+12No it's not, it's based on BSD/Unix.
- Omis, on 12/21/2007, -0/+11Sell them in Canada damn it. I need a new phone.
- betasp, on 12/21/2007, -0/+11You stopped and made a comment. Mission accomplished.
- CraigJ, on 12/21/2007, -2/+12As an Apple shareholder I hope this is in fact true, however, with no source other than "Insiders tell us" it's all just hot air.
- luchid, on 12/21/2007, -1/+11Bitter much?
- fupresti, on 12/21/2007, -1/+11Brilliant argument there Baby Huey.
- CraigJ, on 12/21/2007, -6/+16Pretty sure you haven't a clue what the ***** you're talking about.
- mccarron, on 12/21/2007, -2/+12If there were 3 million on the market on launch day, why were many stores were sold out in the first month here in Chicago? The only units they really had in stock were the 4GB units, but even those were rare. Many friends had to wait a week or more to get an 8GB unit. So obviously they didn't drop 3 million on the market that first day or even month.
- lharrod, on 12/21/2007, -3/+13Excellent reply. Not everyone that has an iPhone is materialistic, out to impress people.
- fangorious, on 12/21/2007, -1/+11Is it? Do we really need people to be able to do the equivalent of FWD: email spamming everyone in their address book, sharing your contact info with exponential numbers of people you don't know, ensuring you stay on spam lists for the remainder of your great-grandchildren's lives?
I've certainly never needed to forward a text, much less to multiple people. - CraigJ, on 12/21/2007, -3/+12I'm straight, but thanks for the offer.
- lharrod, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1310 million for a first generation, high-priced product, locked, limited to one carrier, was indeed an ambitious goal. It makes it all the more amazing how they are nailing that goal.
- kelly, on 12/21/2007, -2/+11Most people that want cars already have one... I guess the car industry is due for a sudden collapse... Or perhaps, just PERHAPS people might buy cars and iPhones based on a feature or two that makes it so compelling that those who already have a car or iPhone might choose to ditch the old one and buy the new model.
Another crazy idea... some people might be swayed to buy one who used a different model before as a result of those new features. Interesting how capitalism works when you suddenly figure it out... or someone on digg spoon feeds you some knowledge. - kreatre2007, on 12/21/2007, -1/+10While Apple has sold an assload of iPhones, the 5 million figure is just a rumor. Why not let Apple announce this before making an announcement on Digg? So far, there has been no official announcement from Apple.
- TheFiestyFaun, on 12/21/2007, -3/+11What's it like living in your parents basement hating everything the world loves?
- streak, on 12/21/2007, -2/+10More accurately, the stated target was 10 million sold from launch date to the end of 2008. Apple tends to be conservative in its predictions, even with what were originally viewed as high predictions Apple made for the current quarter.
- dsendecki, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9Really, I wasn't aware that this feature was missing. That's a huuuuge oversight, no?
- chaosium, on 12/21/2007, -0/+8Trollin' Trollin' Trollin'
- luchid, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9"does very little"? Excuse me, but how is it doing very little, when it does everything a phone does, minus MMS, but including complete e-mail, IMAP, camera, an ipod, a full-fledged browser, video, Youtube and Google Maps?
- BlackStrain, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9There are still lots of countries it hasn't even launched in yet. I'm stlll waiting for it up here in Canada.
- streak, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8While Apple doesn't characterize it as such, the iPhone competes most closely with smart phones, not your cheap garden variety cell phone without a data plan. The smart phone market is a mere fraction of 1 B per year but much larger proportionately in monetary sales and service fees. Considering Apple makes money on the device and the service plan, the situation is much better than raw device sales would suggest.
- Yellow2k7, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7Oh but we do, the N95 is the most common competitor for the iPhone and I get get it for free on any £35+/month contract.
I was just pointing out that if Apple are willing to take the hit, they can sell much more but of course, they do things differently. - CraigJ, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7Yep...
- MacParrot, on 12/21/2007, -2/+9You really think he's made it to a double-digit age yet? How optimistic!
- stalefries, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8Despite what you think, linking to Maddox does not make you cool.
