- srodolff, on 07/03/2008, -20/+148And yet it's STILL overpriced..........
- billbugger, on 07/03/2008, -28/+95still too expensive for a laptop with not even a cd drive.
/apple fanboy too - openingsound, on 07/03/2008, -8/+74im not going to buy one until its a terabyte for $999. and a glitter case.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/03/2008, -3/+62The more I think about how much I used a CD Drive on my last laptop the more I realise I didn't use it much. That's not as huge of a problem as I originally thought it was on the Air.
Still it's ***** expensive. - tsunamisteve, on 07/03/2008, -11/+66Until I can buy a MacBook Air for $1200 I don't care.
- stillpissed, on 07/03/2008, -5/+58It would be great if they had a 128GB SSD option now for those who want more storage and were already comfortable with the original price point.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -4/+54Wow, ONLY $2598? Somehow I feel like I should owe them a favour for this.
- dn11, on 07/03/2008, -5/+38And yet it's STILL a $2,600 web browser.
- RetepNamenots, on 07/03/2008, -3/+33Still costs £2,028.00 in the UK, which is $3983.80...
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -8/+36How often do you use the CD/DVD drive on your notebook? Cause I pretty much don't ever use it.
- rkuchiki, on 07/03/2008, -5/+30"The Cupertino-based Mac maker" opposed to another Mac maker somewhere else?
- PixC, on 07/03/2008, -1/+24I bet the price will cut again after I buy it.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+22Like everything else in the UK, it's lots more expensive than the US.
- Tayloristehsux, on 07/03/2008, -14/+35You're still not getting my money, Apple.
- megostylez, on 07/03/2008, -3/+24glitter case!?! greedy bastard
- Raptor007, on 07/03/2008, -1/+19It's still a much better deal to get a MacBook Pro.
- BossKey, on 07/03/2008, -0/+17With the price cut, it is now competitive with the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 SSD ultrathin.
- saleem, on 07/03/2008, -2/+19WHERE IS MY 5 1/4" FLOPPY DRIVE WTF
- Typhoon2009, on 07/03/2008, -3/+18Nice, now I just have to sell 3 kidneys.
- NathanCH, on 07/03/2008, -1/+16I'll stick with my macbook.
- goat2, on 07/03/2008, -11/+25sure. choose any computer. there you go
- decker12, on 07/03/2008, -6/+20Have any of you actually owned a Macbook Air? We have several at the office and although yes, I feel they are overpriced. But for what they do, they are fantastic computers. None of our Air users (CEO types who travel frequently and have alot of meetings) have any complaints related to the Air itself, although they have issues with Leopard. They are not for everyone - I own a Macbook Pro myself and appreciate the extra ports, flexibility, power, etc.
The screen is very bright, the keyboard is great, and the form factor is amazing. People think "oh how light can it be" but the bottom line is that picking up one of these machines is like carrying around a magazine or a notepad. For meetings most people grab a notepad and a pencil - our Air users are able to grab their entire workstations. They literally get on a plane for a day meeting 800 miles away and only bring this single 3 pound piece of metal and maybe an adapter in case they want to plug into a projector. Again all of this sounds painfully obvious and like I'm an Apple marketing guy, but really, until you've spent a couple of weeks using an Air, I don't see how you can appreciate it. - n3tfury, on 07/03/2008, -3/+16$2598, lol.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 07/03/2008, -9/+22Ultraportable notebook: eeePC ($300)
Small notebook: Dell Inspiron 1420 ($500-900)
Medium notebook: HP dv6000 ($500-1000)
Multimedia/Desktop Replacement: HP dv9000 ($800-2000)
Multimedia/D.R./Gaming powerhouse: HP HDX ($1200-2300)
Anything approaching the price of the Air is big, powerful, fast, good graphics, and awesome, while the Air is just a stylish (like I care? function comes WAY before form) mediocre 13" underpowered laptop with no optical drive. Sure, it's ridiculously thin, but that doesn't save it from being underpowered. - goblindegook, on 07/03/2008, -5/+17mariecordona: That is why OS X allows you to use CD/DVD drives over a network.
- cmallinson, on 07/03/2008, -10/+22Do you think they took the optical drive out to save costs? They removed a feature that their target market does not need to make the machine much smaller and lighter. The fact that is doesn't have a CD drive is a bonus in my opinion.
The iPhone doesn't have a CD drive either... - Lassan, on 07/03/2008, -13/+24That has got to be the biggest price cut I have ever seen. Still, props to Apple, although the reason behind it is probably because there is more competition now with competitors rolling out thinner (and arguably better) notebooks and not necessarily component price drops, etc.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/03/2008, -1/+12This is great news for SDD adoption. The cheaper and the larger SDD's get the more people will use them. I think it's great that Apple's dropping the price, except it was overpriced to begin with, but now anyone else offering SDD's can't charge any more that Apple is.
- sg7791, on 07/03/2008, -1/+12My 2 year old macbook fits in a manila envelope... Just saying.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -6/+16Why the ***** would you buy a laptop? Are you some kind of wuss? I walk around lugging my case and CRT monitor. Though I hope you enjoyed paying out the ass for a POS wimpy laptop when my rig can outperform yours for $500 less.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -8/+18Whenever I need to install something...
- MaynardJK, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10It depends on the SSD. They have single-layer cell (SLC) or Multi-layer cell (MLC) architectures. SLC has faster write speeds and is more expensive.
Samsung is working on better MLC techs that will supposedly fix the slow write speeds of current designs. Personally, I would wait to jump in to the SSD market. - raw10, on 07/03/2008, -3/+12They should drop the price of the standard (non-SSD) by $100 as well, since both models share the same processor and according to the article Intel dropped the price of the 1.7 GHz Core 2 Duo by $100. At least that would make it slightly less outrageously expensive.
- tnoy, on 07/03/2008, -5/+14I've used the DVD drive in my non-work laptop TWICE in the past three years of owning it. I have, however, cursed it for not being lighter almost every other time I use it.
One of those times was to install Debian. - superkendall, on 07/03/2008, -5/+14How much does it cost to remove a CD drive from the laptop you have and remove the hole?
What if I don't want or need a CD drive on my laptop?
Why carry something with you you do not use? Why not complain about the lack of a 5 1/4" floppy? - brainnovate, on 07/25/2008, -9/+17I wouldn't buy one until the capacity is 200gb+
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -3/+11I guess they had to lower the price due to the whole power saving thing turning out to be bunk, unless there was some major modification to the software that allowed you actually save power.
3,000$ for a SSD Mac Air that lasted 6-8 hours on a single battery charge... yes I can totally see the value on it. I personally wouldn’t buy it but I can see alot of rich folks plunking down 3 grand for a battery that last as long as the flight they’re on, especially since some planes are purposely slowing down in order to conserve their fuel.
This, along with the slashing of the iPhone (a few months after the release last year) should send a message to everyone, let others become sorry ass early adopters. Wait 6-12 months and save, not just a few dollars, but hundreds. - XeroKool, on 07/03/2008, -1/+8That's still about $1500 out of my league.
- novacodova, on 07/03/2008, -3/+10It is still too expensive. Apple missed the opportunity to market it as the 'casual mac' the perfect machine for sitting on the couch searching the web / checking email / and reading that favorite ebook while listening to jazz. Maybe they will release a tablet reader next... what the Air should have been.
- bobangitanov2, on 07/03/2008, -2/+9Macbook Air reminds me of the one button round mouse. It's very expensive and impractical, but it looks good.
- Firehed, on 07/03/2008, -3/+9I agree that it's an expensive system for the specs, but the lack of optical drive is a GOOD decision. I never use mine on my laptop. Ever. The two applications I don't download off the publisher's site to install as needed I have stored on my fileserver (which is much faster than an optical drive to boot).
- Po0py, on 07/03/2008, -2/+8They cut it by half a grand and it still gives me high blood pressure looking at a price that high.
- Bravesguy18, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Yeah, the only reason a company passes on savings from materials is to stay competitive.
- yosserhughes, on 07/03/2008, -6/+12Listen to all the fanboys, "Oh yeah well I don't use a CD/DVD drive anyway, I mean who would want one, and carrying all that extra weight around, those 4 ounces make a huge differnece on the way to Starbucks dontcha know"
- FUR10N, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6SSD*
- LightSpeed4, on 07/03/2008, -25/+30and its still overpriced crap
- cam0man, on 07/03/2008, -2/+7wow, looks the impact for the acer aspire, MSI wind, and asus eee are def becoming a threat to apple. they're probably realizing that people like ultra portables for convenience and price plays a huge role in convenience, not just features.
imho, the air is a cool notebook...but not $3k cool. Where as for $500 if I can get an MSI Wind that fits all my needs, that's even cooler plus I have thousands of dollars that I can put into things that WON'T be worthless in 2 years. - fugazied, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6I have a macbook pro, in the last 6 months I've used the cd drive 3 times. 1 of those times was to install leopard. With 2 GB USB sticks I don't see why you would carry cds anyway..
- BossKey, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Computerworld just did a 3-way comparison of ultrathin laptop usability, and the MacBook Air won. This was not a full review of all features, but it was telling that most of their testers preferred the MacBook Air. Seems like it is not as overpriced as it seems, if the way it's done results in people preferring it over the competition.
http://computerworld.com/action/article.do?command ...
I don't like the Air myself, I picked a full-featured laptop. But of all the ultrathin ones, the Air seems to do well for itself. - jaredcat, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5I've got an Air and I love it. Even with its faults, its by far the best laptop I've ever owned. I love it because it is so portable. I literally just fold it up and go. It starts up in about 10 seconds. I don't have to bring a bag full of accessories with me everywhere I go either.
I've had a smaller and lighter laptop from Sony, but that was pretty much unusable unless I brought a folding keyboard, external mouse, huge power brick, etc... The Air is really everything I need all in one.
The biggest downside for me is the short battery life (3-4 hours max with normal usage), but I can forgive that since the power brick is about the size of a deck of cards. -
