- ctrlzee, on 07/11/2008, -16/+553It's the iPocalypse.
- Paal, on 07/11/2008, -7/+306i honestly cannot understand how two companies jizzing over themselves so much over a new product launch could be THIS unprepared for said launch
- TruckStuff, on 07/11/2008, -10/+188Who else saw this one coming?
- Luminoth, on 07/11/2008, -3/+156I hope whatever ***** moron that thought releasing both the new firmware to old users and the new phones on the *same* day and having *every* user re-activate was a good idea gets his ass fired. This is such an incredibly stupid thing to do, I can't believe anyone would be so brain damaged as to think it would work out.
- Latimer, on 07/11/2008, -40/+188Update #1: My Blackberry Curve is still working.
Update #2: I just received and sent an MMS text.
Update #3: I'm being buried. - mlaskowski, on 07/11/2008, -4/+123I updated my 1st gen iPhone around 9am est, still cant activate it. Apple and AT&T just give the run around when I call bouncing me back between the 2 of them. In the meantime no phone or email great new upgrade.

- smacksaw, on 07/11/2008, -0/+85What a ringing endorsement for Apple's enterprise server business.
- pumacub, on 07/11/2008, -7/+88"It just works."
- jamesduh, on 07/11/2008, -8/+73EPIC FAIL.
'nough said. - Pic0, on 07/11/2008, -20/+79Someone get a PC in there to save them
- AthenaQ, on 07/11/2008, -1/+58Just left the AT&T store in south Georgia. At about 9:45 AM EST, they just started giving people their iPhones to take home and activate via iTunes. Our store's internet connection died, too.
iPocalypse, indeed. - danhood, on 07/11/2008, -2/+58My activation story from an apple store in Maryland follows...
4:15 am - arrived at store, 10th in line
8:00 am - store opened, immediately paired with a rep - asked which model and started taking info
8:10 am - some exception in transferring number and setting up account occurred, handed off to concierge - she calls some ATT customer service number
9:10 am - after multiple transfers between customer service reps with ATT issue gets resolved (though the ATT rep we had seemed confused as to what plans they were even offering), number transfer requested and plan selected, paid and went sent to activation station
10:00 am - after 50 mins of waiting for iTunes to active phone with no success (presumably because servers getting hammered, though some which made it to the station before me were successful) we were told we can activate it at home and that they would attempt to activate each person in line for 5 mins before letting them leave store with it UNACTIVATED
So, it seems that they are letting people leave with it unactivated due to this issue (at least at this store) which is contrary to what was said to be the process. So right now the phone is asking to be hooked up to iTunes and reads no service (though it appears you can still call 911). I'm a bit concerned as it was rumored that the iTunes instance in stores would be different to also allow the phone activation (whereas the normal version couldn't). Guess we'll see. - inactive, on 07/11/2008, -7/+60Where is the commercial Apple Guy now? What does he have to say to Windows Guy about this?
- jer2eydevil88, on 07/11/2008, -4/+45Apparently not the CTO at AT&T who will be looking for a new job very shortly.
- skoles, on 07/11/2008, -3/+44So if you ever wanted to jailbreak a 3G iPhone this would be your opportunity since they're just letting you leave.
- ryancalderoni, on 07/11/2008, -0/+41SLIDE FOR EMERGENCY
- mediaspree, on 07/11/2008, -0/+40Someone is gonna be fired.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/11/2008, -5/+44Mozilla Firefox... more than 8 million downloads in 24 hours. :-D
- leerayIG88, on 07/11/2008, -4/+42I think they forgot to CTRL+ALT+DEL.
- Paal, on 07/11/2008, -0/+36same here, all i've got is a shiny glass brick (GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR)
- cubbiesx, on 07/11/2008, -0/+36I can't even update my 1st gen iPhone to 2.0 at home! My phone is bricked until they fix the problem. Bet they won't roll out huge firmware and hardware updates at the same time ever again!
- AthenaQ, on 07/11/2008, -1/+37Just left the AT&T store in south Georgia. At about 9:45 AM EST, they just started giving people their iPhones to take home and activate via iTunes. Our store's internet connection died, too.
iPocalypse, indeed. - pensel, on 07/11/2008, -3/+37That's probably Steve Jobs. And he's not going anywhere.
- Freps, on 07/11/2008, -4/+37That's what you get for attempting in-store activation when the last deployment worked like a charm.
- earnjam, on 07/11/2008, -0/+31I guess if you could only keep 1 feature, 911 dialing is nice.
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -1/+31Well that was worth standing in line all night for. Oops.
- jer2eydevil88, on 07/11/2008, -0/+30AT&T is blaming Apple's iTunes 7.7 release and Apple is blaming AT&T's Activation server. Truth be told though it is both their faults for allowing this to go live with all these problems and it makes Apple look like they are entering the mobile business market with their pants down!
- PabloMac, on 07/11/2008, -1/+30Your comment was added to gizmodo's headline:
http://i36.tinypic.com/300w2zc.png - Pic0, on 07/11/2008, -0/+29It will be the Windows Guy trying to call the Apple Guy and the Apple Guy just sits there, like the AT&T commercials!
- thdsn17, on 07/11/2008, -3/+30So I successfully downloaded the 2.0 software for my first gen iPhone this morning. It backed up the iPhone contents, installed the new software, and reloaded all my old music, movies, email, etc. But now I can't sync my iPhone because apparently iTunes wants to connect to the iTunes Store one more time??? Why??? Everything is done and the phone works!! I just want to sync the apps I downloaded last night! Argh!
- smacksaw, on 07/11/2008, -0/+26Except they charged people rent for waiting in line so long.
- xxpor, on 07/11/2008, -0/+25yes, by federal law in the US, any phone, even if it doesn't have a contract or a activated service plan still can dial 911 and be connected.
- wardsac, on 07/11/2008, -9/+34Is the Apple guy too busy brushing his hair to fix it? Maybe they can get the PC fat guy with glasses to come in and fix it?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to call my wife on my cell phone, which is actually my wife's old pink razor. Surprisingly, I feel like less of a douchebag using it than the kids who stood outside all night to get their Brick update. Enjoy. - kenedamick, on 07/11/2008, -2/+27***** Steve Jobs

..................................., - Paal, on 07/11/2008, -0/+24were you able to buy it at $199 without signing a contract?
- smacksaw, on 07/11/2008, -2/+26But it's Apple's servers which are the problem.
- superkendall, on 07/11/2008, -3/+26Man you Blackberry guys cant even get buried right. :-)
- wildsnake, on 07/11/2008, -20/+41LOLOLO I knew the activation will be a mess
- Shiner6, on 07/11/2008, -3/+24FAIL
- ScottEK, on 07/11/2008, -0/+21I was 20th in line. It's been 3 hours, I'm posting this from a computer in the Apple Oak Brook IL store. They have sold 4 phones today. Not only is the iTunes system for activation down, which is also bricking home users phones, BUT their payment verification system is also down. All the original people who entered the store are still in here.
The outside line of 350 people has not moved in 3 hours. When their systems were working nearly every customer was getting turned away because their system said their accounts could only be upgraded at an AT&T store. - neom, on 07/11/2008, -2/+23I was standing in line this morning and a Rogers Canada rep was walking around, I said to her "You realize both your network and the iTunes network is going to be at it's knees by the end of the day today?" she laughed at me and said "Yah, we've had 3G for years, we know what we're doing" I responded with "You've never had mass activation like this before though" she said "We'll see". Less than 5 minutes later she was frantically emailing from her curve about the fact that rogers sales and iTunes both went down.
I really wanted to say "I told you so". - LordPhilMil, on 07/11/2008, -0/+21Maybe the iTunes traffic is being throttled?
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -0/+21Thanks Digg, for saving a noob like me a ridiculously excruciating wait time for tech support.
- AthenaQ, on 07/11/2008, -0/+20No, we signed the contract and they associated the iPhones with the new contract. I left without it being activated though. Actually, I left with the shrink wrap still on the box.
- bentracy, on 07/11/2008, -1/+20He took that comment from the gizmodo comment thread.
- vvaduva, on 07/11/2008, -0/+18Yup..I've been sitting here for about an hour refreshing trying to hit their servers...nada! I can only dial 911!! Wohoo!!
- Shempster, on 07/11/2008, -0/+18Just updated my 1st gen as well, and it won't activate. Errors out when trying to connect to the iTunes store it says! Now I have a brick.
- thekak, on 07/11/2008, -0/+17That's why you don't go opening day.
- mediaspree, on 07/11/2008, -3/+20Hey Apple! "Make sure YOUR network settings are correct and YOUR network connection is active" Then, I'll try again.
Bricked phone. Yey. -
