- srodrigo, on 07/27/2008, -6/+59At least MobileMe is a free service... oh wait... not :X
- somespecial, on 07/27/2008, -7/+50Rather than just apologizing, they should be giving refunds to those affected.
- Deist4Life, on 07/26/2008, -4/+42Actually most companies do admit to wrong, and far sooner than Apple. That is why this is being compared to the biggest blunders in Tech History, and an unprecedented move by Apple. Listen to MacBreak Weekly rant on about it.
- qbthemc, on 07/27/2008, -35/+59This is why I love Microsoft. :)
- hsinray, on 07/26/2008, -2/+25Be sure to go the the apple url at the end of the story. http://www.apple.com/mobileme/status/ This is where they blog about their failure.. and what have they tried to do... yes, Steve jobs told him to blog...."We particularly regret to report the loss in the affected accounts of approximately 10% of the messages received between July 16 and July 18."
- billjimbob, on 07/26/2008, -10/+31YEAH GO APPLE THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG!!!!!
- richardhenry, on 07/27/2008, -4/+24They should have rolled it out in batches. "10,000 people can sign up this week." Their planning sucks ass.
I love what I've seen of MobileMe when it's working, but I've been able to send like two messages this week. My email outbox is actually causing my MacBook to weigh more.
This is ***** retarded. - filefly, on 07/27/2008, -2/+18***** you steve. two of my friends died after losing messages
- josereyes0, on 07/27/2008, -3/+19Microsoft has had plenty of screw ups, and for some they've admitted them and tried hard to correct it. See Xbox 360 console manufacturing issues or Xbox Live issues during Halo 3 release.
- billjimbob, on 07/26/2008, -8/+23You pay for Twitter?
- wush, on 07/27/2008, -0/+11Downtime's one thing, but flat-out losing emails on a paid service is incredible.
Also note engadget trying to be down with the kids by repeatedly using fail. - hardeep1singh, on 07/27/2008, -5/+16lol,
they're messing up on a $99 an year service which should be free in the first place. :) - JAHred, on 07/27/2008, -0/+10It shouldn't happen all the time, this is the perfect example of why you want redundancies in your network. This is Apple's fault just like it was Microsoft's fault last Christmas when I couldn't get on Xbox Live. Both are services you pay for and therefore people expect 99.9% uptime.
- ZachSka87, on 07/27/2008, -2/+12Apple doesn't admit to their screwups. They release an update and claim the fix is a "new feature." For example, the new version of Mobile Me will be tagged as "Mobile Me 2.0 - Now with added messaging functionality that allows the end user to ACTUALLY SEND data.
Then Steve Jobs will come out and say "This is THE BEST product Apple has ever created!!!," and current iPhone users will spend twenty bucks for a software update that Apple should've gotten right the first time. - Zippo, on 07/27/2008, -6/+15*shrugs* I haven't had any issues with MobileMe at all after they got it up and running.
- DuxDucis, on 07/27/2008, -4/+10If Apple really wants to go into some serious damage control for a serious problem, why not start giving MobileMe subscribers a few free months?
They've already admitted a problem and haven't fixed it completely yet. So, what's the harm other than a few lost dollars of cooling some people's anger towards a new(ish) service? - doctordbx, on 07/27/2008, -2/+7Who mentioned Microsoft?
It is often said never buy a V1 of a Mac product because of bugs/issues - seems this works for MobileMe as well. - dcbebop, on 07/27/2008, -4/+9Hrm, so 1% affected, and 10% message loss from those affected. So 99.9% remained unaffected? This sounds like a standard SLA to me.
- jinkop38, on 07/27/2008, -3/+8A blogger without name.
- Gee1004, on 07/27/2008, -2/+6They probably lost emails becuase it wasn't dotmac, it was a new design with new code. Maybe when they tried to restore the lost data, those accounts couldn't be imported correctly. There was a bug. I am not a programmer, but I've seen this happen during backups
- jicon, on 07/27/2008, -3/+7So who is posting the blog entries? For all I know, it could be FakeMobileMeEngineer.
This event is karma. Phil Schiller went on stage to promote this service in June, and then proceeds to once again take a knuckleball shot at Microsoft, calling the technology they were using for push email from Exchange: "Activestink".
I like my Apple computers and iPods, but quit it already with the underhanded shots at your largest 3rd party software supplier. Apple is no longer the rebel or different thinker. - Setter, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4Incorrect. As a .mac user, I was automatically transitioned into MobileMe hell, along with all other .mac subscribers.
The .mac userbase comprises the vast majority of "early signups." - Palaceguard, on 07/27/2008, -1/+5No problems here, but people just want to continue to get Apple because of a hardware and software glitch issue. That's the way it is. Most of them have no knowledge of what it takes for a major upgrade with millions of people.
- zonk3r, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4"Some poor soul has been tasked by Steve Jobs to post status updates "every other day or so.""
That's a real case of don't-shoot-the-messenger. - doctordbx, on 07/27/2008, -2/+5My bet is never.
The most obvious early signups for the service with be members of the Cult of Mac.
They're happy to beta products for Jobs, they've been doing it most of their lives. - bbeep, on 07/27/2008, -4/+7MobileMe's rocky start will make everyone forget about Windows ME right?
- mehan, on 07/27/2008, -1/+4messages lost is far worse than just downtime.
- nickweston, on 07/27/2008, -1/+4love.......Microsoft? Isn't that like loving McDonalds? I'm lovin' it!
- benman587, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3I think Marjo9 meant buried for "User Datagram Protocol protocol"
- Setter, on 07/27/2008, -5/+8Dugg because it pisses off the knuckle-dragging blind supporters of Apple.
Ever since Apple transitioned my account from .mac to MobileMe, I've had ***** email service. Further, the "push" aspect of the service isn't push at all - updates made on my phone take roughly 10 minutes to trickle to my laptop or desktop. - michaelpinto, on 07/26/2008, -10/+13Would the author have preferred a cover up? I wish Twitter was that honest about what's going on...
- ignisatra, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3Wait, is MobileMe similar to Windows ME?
- mkocher, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the laugh!
- brokenwatch, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Spoken like someone whose job does not depend on email. And to the people who are going to respond "why would you trust your email to Apple"- agreed and please remember this anytime someone recommends Mobile Me for anything.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Apple puts mobleme on computers without permission, viruses are being written for Leopard, Jobs has imaginary cancer and now this. It's been a bad month for Apple fan boys while Windows posted a 42% profit without any funny commercials. Take that you slackers!
- CAisBacK, on 07/27/2008, -1/+3I never thought i would ever say this but... Take That Apple....
- Vadi0, on 07/27/2008, -4/+6Heh... this is no way at all compares to Amazon's S3 apology, explanation, actions taken, and future plans.
- brokenwatch, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Do I pay for digg? And while I'm sure no one cares if you lose 2 spam emails, 3 emails from a foreign prince, and 5 emails from your friends asking you to go to some stupid party, some people actually use their email for work. These are the kind of people who might pay for it, and expect a reasonable amount of service. Downtime in accessing email is one thing, but to completely lose (reject) mail is a completely different thing and never acceptable. Just because your standards are lower doesn't mean everyone else's are as well.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -9/+12nice article
- digitalpencil, on 07/27/2008, -1/+3"it just breaks"
- srodrigo, on 07/27/2008, -2/+4Amen to that
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Apple doesnt admit *****
They usually just tell the user, they never really needed that service anyway. And usually the mactarded herd just blindly nods their heads! - Lewiji, on 07/27/2008, -1/+3They did give affected users up to 120 days of free service.
- rplunk2, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Except this was supposed to be Apple's big thing to make the iphone more appealing to businesses, where losing a couple of messages could have really negative consequences. For a paid service it's just not acceptable.
- mehan, on 07/27/2008, -3/+4Who cares why it happened? The important point is it should not have.
- Minxiloni, on 07/27/2008, -2/+3IIIITTT JJJUUUUUUUSSSTTT WWOOOOOORRRKKSSS!!!!
- rplunk2, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1people don't pay for digg.
- streak, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1http://status.aws.amazon.com/s3-20080720.html
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -1/+2Yeah when M$ screws up Mac retartd like you cry like whinny little babys
- ChemiosMurphy, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1It's a paid service. It should be flawless
