Apple Updates MacBooks to Santa Rosa, GMA X3100
macrumors.com — As rumored, Apple has quietly updated the MacBook tonight to the Santa Rosa architecture with mild speed bumps and the new GMA X3100 integrated video.

- digg it
- simplenation, on 11/02/2007, -49/+20disappointing nevertheless
- MitchC, on 11/02/2007, -25/+10I agree mate. :(
- simplenation, on 11/02/2007, -10/+6Well I was just ready for the aluminum casing and LED backlit screen. and a combo drive for the low end?? come on...
However, I'm still gonna buy it because I can't wait another 6 months- manitoba98xp, on 11/01/2007, -8/+9You mean SuperDrive (CD/DVD±RW). They already ship with Combo Drives (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) drives.
- pauleric, on 11/01/2007, -1/+7No, simplenation means the low-end still has a combo drive. And he's right. Obviously Apple does it to encourage people to get the better model, but it's still ridiculous.
- manitoba98xp, on 11/03/2007, -0/+1I guess it's the clarity (or lack thereof) of simplenation's comment. I read it as "I was just ready for the aluminum casing, LED backlit screen, and a combo drive for the low end??". Perhaps capitalization would have helped.
- simplenation, on 11/02/2007, -10/+6Well I was just ready for the aluminum casing and LED backlit screen. and a combo drive for the low end?? come on...
- simplenation, on 11/02/2007, -23/+18it really pisses me off that Apple still charges $200 more for the black Macbook (and 40GB of extra storage)
- haydesigner, on 11/02/2007, -7/+15I'm thinking that they are not not forcing you to buy the black one.
I could be wrong. - ElPachuco, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5You could just bump up the HD space on the 2.2GHz white one and it'll just be and extra $75. And it's basically the same thing except the color.
So, i guess they just charge extra for the black. Doesn't make much sense... but they look so nice. : ) - ElPachuco, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4BTW when I said extra 75, I meant on top of the white macbooks price, not the black one. It'll be cheaper to get the white one on the same specs.
- cr4wl3r, on 11/07/2007, -1/+2Yup. You are paying 75 for the color. Saddening.
- sv650touring, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2no, no, no. You get a 75 dollar discount by getting the white one.
- cr4wl3r, on 11/07/2007, -1/+2Yup. You are paying 75 for the color. Saddening.
- haydesigner, on 11/02/2007, -7/+15I'm thinking that they are not not forcing you to buy the black one.
- winnch, on 11/02/2007, -1/+70I'm not sure what's disappointing when "get more" and "same price" are mixed together.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/02/2007, -0/+16Some people were expecting this to be a little 13" Macbook Pro with like a tractor beam and particle transmitter built in. You know, the usual buzz late in an Apple product's lifecycle.
- ElPachuco, on 11/02/2007, -0/+7I mean come on, 250GB on the Macbook and it's 5400rpm is pretty sweet. And you can also fill it up to 4gb of RAM, Though word of warning if you are, do NOT buy the RAM from Apple, get it from crucial.com, WAY cheaper.
Before I was thinking about getting an iMac but now i'm totally getting the Macbook Pro, since it also got the bump.- samdu, on 11/02/2007, -0/+5Or get it from NewEgg. Even cheaper than Crucial.com. But yeah, definitely DON'T buy RAM from Apple.
- sv650touring, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Dealram.com, and don't buy RAM from any OEM.
- MitchC, on 11/02/2007, -25/+10I agree mate. :(
- gbhall, on 11/02/2007, -11/+36At least it has new integrated video. Maybe it will perform better than everyone thinks?
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/02/2007, -4/+33X3100 is better-but nothing to jump for joy over. It's still craptastic for games.
- Lyanto, on 11/01/2007, -2/+11Speaking from experience, it's almost comparable to a low-end graphics card in some games. The only problem is that the Windows drivers suck something awful, maybe you Mac guys will have more luck. I really regret not waiting a month for the Geforce 8600M...
- burrgrinder, on 11/02/2007, -3/+25Who seriously games off of a laptop? Especially a $1k laptop. Macbook videocards are irrelevant to their target market.
- aaronm67, on 11/06/2007, -5/+15Unless you're buying an Apple, you can get a pretty decent gaming laptop for $1k.
- willdelaney, on 11/01/2007, -2/+5Um, I got an HP laptop last year for around 1.1k that has a dual core centrino 1.7ghz, 1gb ram, and a 7600m graphics card. I dont game on it, but i have a few times and things run just fine
- bagelpirate, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3I game solely off my MacBook Pro
- Mattja, on 11/02/2007, -3/+4Yeah the 17" Pro's are awesome for gaming. People seriously underestimate how good that laptop really is for such a use, especially with bootcamp and the Nvidia 8800. I'm planning on joining you, Bagel.
- Laxaloot, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I probably will get dugg down for being off topic and whatnot but I have an honest question as a 15" macbook pro user. How much worse is the video card in mine in comparison to the one in the 17"? (I have the higher end pro, bought a few months ago) I know off topic, and I know it wont be answered, but thought I'd try.
- aznhomig, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5It's not an 8800. It's an 8600 graphics card. Big difference in terms of performance, so let's not be wrong on this matter as it DOES make a difference.
- Ireland, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Gaming on a 13" notebook? You may need to see someone.
- abid786, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Gaming on a Mac? ;)
- digitalarcanum, on 11/02/2007, -11/+5who are you trying to kid? integrated video is, was, and always will be *****.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/01/2007, -2/+7I wouldn't be so confident there. People used to say that about Math Co-Processors back in the day. Integrated video will actually be a must eventually if you want higher speed communication with the microprocessor than modern buses can provide. You can even look at the architecture used in the XBox360 and PS3 consoles to get a glimpse at this idea that will eventually find its way into more and more multimedia computers all the way up to the PC. The whole idea behind external video cards is choice and competition, but those won't beat the laws of physics for long...
- rspeed, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I think I see where you're going there.
The speed of the bus connecting a video card and a CPU is constantly increasing relative to the speed of the video card and the cpu themselves. As a result, the need for dedicated video memory is constantly diminishing. Running video memory requests through a NuBus, ISA or PCI bus was impractical. The cost savings were negligible compared to how much performance would be diminished. AGP is a bit of a grey area, but PCI-e has such a massive amount of bandwidth available that it's really not unreasonable to share the main system memory. It'll never be as fast as dedicated VRAM, but it's at least a worthwhile tradeoff now.- KibibyteBrain, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1There is nothing to say that an integrated video processor could not have its own dedicated high speed memory pool.
You might think that PCI-E is fast, but thats because you are presuming the current way of doing things. You could actually have the CPU and GPU run from the same code off of memory without the CPU doing any work for video instructions with a more centralized model! Its cool stuff.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1There is nothing to say that an integrated video processor could not have its own dedicated high speed memory pool.
- rspeed, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I think I see where you're going there.

- themastersb, on 11/02/2007, -3/+1Doesn't the integrated video have more memory now? That has to count for something.
- molochi, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1No it still doesn't have ANY dedicated memory. So not only is it limited to the system memory's bandwidth (usually much less than dedicated video memory), but it also shares what bandwidth is available with the rest of the system. However, this is of minor importance (with reasonably fast system memory) if you don't game. If the video memory is just being used as a framebuffer for a single WXGA+ screen, you're consuming less than 400MBPS for video. You probably wouldn't notice the hit encoding mp3s and whatnot.
But the bus speed HAS increased from 667 to 800MHz which is good if they can also load these up with 800MHz memory.- MikeCerm, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1They won't. Santa Rosa still uses 667 MHz. 800 MHz laptop chips are not mainstream, if they exist at all.

- theprez, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Apparently you can also max out the RAM at 4GB now... not surprisingly expensive if you do it at the Apple Store, though.
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/02/2007, -4/+33X3100 is better-but nothing to jump for joy over. It's still craptastic for games.
- omghax, on 11/01/2007, -15/+7/me wishes he would've waited 1 month...
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/01/2007, -6/+6I bought my Mac recently too, it sucks. But be happy the update is so minor. It's really nothing to worry about, your Mac is still awesome. The performance bump is really nothing much, hardly a boost in games. Though if you were interested in gaming you shouldn't even bought a Macbook lol.
- snoozevmw, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3You can probably realize a similar improvement by simply upgrading to 2 gig RAM, OS X would appreciate it. I recently upgrade my 'old' macbook and it is definitely like a new machine now. And as much as Apple would like to disagree you do not need the $300 2 Gig upgrade (from apple store); I used crucial, $59 for two 1 gig (2 GB total) sticks as recommended by their adviser and it works just fine.
- sdenike, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1I too just bought my macbook about 2 weeks ago ha

- dagaz, on 11/02/2007, -13/+25Finally, I've been waiting for this and Leopard before upgrading ...
- theprez, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2However I don't think Apple sees this as a real update, because there's no news about it. I'd expect to see REAL updates until January. Remember Apple has done this sort of "semi-update" with the iMac.
- theblacknight, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but I was really hoping for LED backlights too.
- farqueue, on 11/02/2007, -23/+18Why not a better card? Sigh.. apple..
- romek, on 11/01/2007, -4/+42probably due to battery life. Faster graphics card = immediate battery life reduction (and usually pretty significant at that).
- mccarron, on 11/02/2007, -2/+34The MacBook Pros get the better video cards. That's why.
- miniboss, on 11/01/2007, -10/+13-because a good card kills battery life-, -because only pro level systems should get good video-
C'mon people. Why is it when the CONSUMER gets shortchanged in Apple specs then all the excuses are made in favor of Apple's outdated business model? NO, an option for a higher end vidcard wouldn't ruin Macbook battery life. NO, non-pro level computers should still get better video.
Obviously I'll get dugg down for not acting like an Apple salesmen, but as CONSUMERS we need to remember that when we whine like babies we get what we want. No reflective side-dock in leopard, 3rd party apps coming to iPhone and if we finally stop making excuses, an OPTION for real video cards in these "budget" notebooks.- calgone, on 11/01/2007, -2/+15If it was an option that would be fine but I don't want nor need a dedicate video card. I don't play hardcore games and would upset if the prices got bumped because of this card. My Core Duo 2.0 ghz MacBook does just fine for me.
- AndrewWiggin, on 11/01/2007, -2/+13The point of the MacBook model is NOT for gaming or doing anything that involves a good video card. This model is not the intensive working/video gaming model that is the MacBook Pro.
PS, adding a video card would take up more space too. There are tons of reasons they don't add a real video card.- joshuaer, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2I agree you can not run apple shake, FCP, or any other pro apple software on the macbook. it is not a pro computer it is a cheap laptop that is around 1k that works with consumer level programs personally i love my macbook for fun and email and have a mac pro for real work.
- zweben, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Also, what is a dedicated graphics card going to do that you will really be able to appreciate on a 13" screen? The computer targets people who don't care about that sort of thing. There are always exceptions, but for most people it would just be a price bump with no benefit.
- fezzasus, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2A good graphics card goes in hand in hand with a fast processor and largr screen. The Macbook Pro has all of that. Since apple doesn't want to inflict anything less than the Core 2 Duo on people (thankfully) they need to use a worse graphics card to increase the devide between the Pro and non-pro.

- Scarfy, on 11/02/2007, -13/+23My Macbook of last year seems so inferior now.
- romek, on 11/02/2007, -8/+24Don't give into the Mac Marketing machine... your MacBook is fine... just make sure your running at least 2GB of RAM and load up Leopard... your good to go! :-)
- kaiwai, on 11/01/2007, -2/+5I second that; I felt a slight bit of hollowness in my stomach when I saw it released but then realised that my Macbook is just fine the way it is; I don't need the latest and greatest.
Oh, and for shadenfraud, lets remember, this is a new set of hardware.
As for me, I got the May 2007 Macbook, loaded with 2 gigs, I'm now waiting on my free upgrade to Leopard to arrive (since I bought it just over a week ago). - diggimator, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Let me check my MacBook has... 1GB. D'oh! (website says only 512MB required, though)
- monospaced, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Well, with the new chip, increased bus speed, an additional 144MB of RAM for video, and increased processor speed, I'd say the MacBook he owns is without question far inferior to it's Santa Rosa replacement. I think this computer could game on low settings.
- norbiu, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I bought my MacBook just 3 weeks before last years upgrade. I didn't care then, and I don't care now. As long as it runs everything I use flawlessly*, there's just no need for more.
* - with 2GB of RAM.

- Protoss, on 11/02/2007, -2/+37Really wish I could have waited, the gma950 really sucks, even for simple gaming it lacks.
- snek, on 11/01/2007, -3/+8The x3100 is probably not much better.. It still shares it's memory with your RAM, which is really bad for gaming..
You really want something with it's own dedicated gDDR2/3 RAM since that's so much faster..- Protoss, on 11/01/2007, -3/+2Sure, but looking at the comparisons, or even the wiki for each card, the gma950 barely supports DX9, the X3100 fully supports it, and also does T&L, through the software, but still.
- kaiwai, on 11/01/2007, -4/+6Considering this is a Mac, and OpenGL is being used; DirectX is a non-issue.
- Tippis, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Perhaps, but the differences in capabililty between the different DX iterations is a bit clearer than between the various OpenGL versions.
- jasongdx, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Boot Camp.
- kaiwai, on 11/01/2007, -4/+6Considering this is a Mac, and OpenGL is being used; DirectX is a non-issue.
- vagarach, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1Nuh-uh, the X3100 brings hardware TnL for the first time to the GMA type integrated chip.
- Protoss, on 11/01/2007, -3/+2Sure, but looking at the comparisons, or even the wiki for each card, the gma950 barely supports DX9, the X3100 fully supports it, and also does T&L, through the software, but still.
- Lionhart, on 11/02/2007, -2/+5If you are interested in gaming on your Mac you should NOT BE GETTING A MACBOOK.

- csixty4, on 11/02/2007, -4/+15Could someone give me some context here? Is this better or worse than the Mobility Radeon x1400 in my Dell laptop?
- ronaldst, on 11/01/2007, -8/+6Yours is much better. GMA is pretty lowend stuff.
- csixty4, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5Thanks. I've been spoiled by this Dell E1505, even though I'm not much of a gamer. Guess I'll have to save up for a MBP.
- hove, on 11/01/2007, -10/+4Why not just buy another dell?

- JorgeGT, on 11/01/2007, -7/+4GMA < all other cards.
- krizhere, on 11/05/2007, -5/+6GMA x3100 is one step below Radeon x1400. You'll probably get better performance at the same resolution but still nothing to brag about :)
- kinerry, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3you're way off
GMA is not even close
- kinerry, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3you're way off
- rabidg00se, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2While we're on the subject, how does the GeForce 8600M GT in the MBP compare? I've been using a Dell with a GMA915 for a few years now, and I'd really like to upgrade to something with a real graphics card. I've looked around the interwebs, but I've only really gotten reviews of the MBP itself, not its graphics capabilities. Any advice?
- zioxide, on 11/05/2007, -0/+68600m GT will blow the GMA out of the water
- Tippis, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5The 8600, even in its toned-down mobile versions, is an actual, modern, fast and fully-functional graphics card.
The GMAs, no matter what kind, are still just souped-up chipset extensions that provide a way to light up pixels on a screen.
In short, there is no comparison. - mrsteve007, on 11/01/2007, -8/+2Get an Asus G1-S B1 - It's faster and a good bit cheaper than the MBP. I love mine. Any laptop that come stock with a 200 GB 7200 rpm hard drive will be much snappier than a 5400 rpm counterpart. The graphics card is a 8600M GT and 1 GB of intel 'turbo memory'. That on top of the 2 GB of Ram in the system. If you question the build quality of the Asus, take a closer look at the motherboards in almost all Apple machines (hint: they all say ASUS).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...- sancho, on 11/01/2007, -2/+37200 rpm in a notebook? All that spinning round and round makes your battry life go down. :(
- burrgrinder, on 11/01/2007, -0/+0Depends on what you're doing. Anything hard disk intensive, sure, but they spin down if you're just web browsing, writing a document, etc. That why you have system memory. And you can also drop any standard laptop harddrive into the MBP if you can afford it.

Personally, I'm hoping the MBP gets an upgrade to the 8700 in January. I can't hold off much longer and I want this thing to be ready for StarCraft II! :)- superkendall, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I don't think Starcraft III will be all that taxing on video cards, even though it is 3D...
- kaiwai, on 11/02/2007, -2/+4What do you intend on using it for? for me, GMA to surf the web, view movies and so forth is more than enough power.
- ronaldst, on 11/01/2007, -8/+6Yours is much better. GMA is pretty lowend stuff.
- aunzim, on 11/02/2007, -17/+104combo drive in a 1000$ laptop at 2007
only apple could do it !!!!
SHAME- arjung, on 11/01/2007, -6/+8i have the basic macbook (combo drive), and everyone ridicules me for this.
but seriously, when was the last time typical users burned a dvd? i hardly burn cds on my macbook and have never needed to burn a dvd. maybe you burn dvds once an hour, but is it hard to believe that some people don't? and if apple wants to target those people for its lowest end notebook, why is that a problem for you?
btw, i'm a american college student.- RapeApe, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4If typical users didn't burn DVDs then why exactly sell them everywhere? I mean I go to CVS and even they sell DVD-Rs. Alot of people use those DVDs for storage. I'm not going to pay 1000 for a computer and it doesn't even come with I consider basic.
- turpenine, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2I have an ibook with a combo drive and it is fine. I eventually needed to burn dvds and got an external burner for $40, which is great because it is cheaper than an internal one and I never need to burn a dvd on the go, that would just be silly.
- 5plic3r, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1FYI, on Digg, CVS means "Concurrent Versioning System".
- reubencm, on 11/01/2007, -2/+1i too am a macbook user how ever have the top end macbook and have not once burned a dvd. not really the end of the world not having one, but is nice too know i can if i wanted to
- SwedishNinja, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3Really. My Acer cost half as much and has a DVD burner in it, not to mention roughly the same specs.
- johnpaul191, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1i think the mass quantities of burned DVDs are for downloaded movies/TV. seriously. that's why you can run to CVS at 04:00 and grab a spool. then again, 2 or 3 years ago CVS still sold blank minidiscs..... so who knows what the hell they are thinking.
i do locations sound work, so i use my DVD player to burn the BWF files because they are a huge. for an indie feature, i will need at least 4 DVDs if i was only recording 2 tracks of audio.

- taintedzodiac, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1I think his point was that you can purchase a DVD writer for the same price as a Combo drive these days. Apple's cutting corners to get to their target MSRP and this is an obvious one. Just standard practices.
- taintedzodiac, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6I think his point was that you can purchase a DVD writer for the same price as a Combo drive these days. Apple's cutting corners to get to their target MSRP and this is an obvious one. Just standard practices.
- turpenine, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1not a slot loading laptop sized drive.
I would expect it in the next major update though
- turpenine, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1not a slot loading laptop sized drive.
- cmkilger, on 11/01/2007, -2/+2Actually, you can get a Dell Precision M4300 for $1439 and it comes with just a CD-ROM drive (can't even read DVDs or burn CDs). That's only one example. But it's not just Apple.
- qmacaulay, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2It is clearly Apple's intent to jack up the price for features that cost them very little. For example, the upgrade to 4GB Ram is $850. You can buy 2GB sticks for $83 each! Combo drive should be gone but it isn't because they have no leverage without it.
- turpenine, on 11/02/2007, -4/+1Apple uses buffered ram. Next time you buy ram, compare the prices. I don't need buffered ram as all my processes are crap, but some people like it. They also made a deal with the supplier a long time ago to get it cheap that is now ***** them over.
- Tippis, on 11/02/2007, -0/+5No. Only the Mac Pro uses buffered RAM -- *all* other models (iMacs, Minis, Macbooks, MBPs, Apple TVs) use the same unbuffered PC2-5300 as everyone else, and buying your own rather than going through apple will save you a TON of money (even with the Pro... *especially* with the Pro).
When I bought one of the new iMacs a while back, I chose not to pay $850 to get 4GB, and instead went out and bought 2x2GB Corsair sticks for $230 total... and that was at the rather expensive place down the streets (who get far too much business from me, simply because they're convenient).
Heck, even with the FB-DIMMs for the Pro, they're charging through the nose: they want $4500(!!) the 16GB upgrade (8x2GB), when "my" shop would sell me the same setup for $1200 (or $2000 if they sold me Apple-certified parts). - qmacaulay, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Agreed.

- Lick, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2arjung: you're being ridiculed, but you still have faith in Apple? I bet that every sunday morning you go to the local chur..- Applestore too.
- diggimator, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3Cha ching! That DVD burner upgrade will be $200, please. But do we really need internal optical drives?
My workplace has quite a few computers. Each have optical drives, but people rarely use them (maybe 1 person total per month), which makes me wonder why these drives have to be internal to begin with instead of external and shared.
Having said that, there's indeed DVD burning demand from MacBook users. I use an external DVD burner. When I upgraded my computer, I kept the old external, which saved me a bit of cash. - theblacknight, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2I'd pay an extra $100 to take out the combo drive and replace it with a second battery. I don't need no stickin' optical drive in my laptop. Especially when I can get an external one for less than the price difference between the two models. As it is, I have a combo drive and use the $30 DVD-DL+-RW drive in my linux box when I need to burn something, which really isn't often.
- carloslegarda, on 11/08/2007, -0/+0Exactly. I mean why include iDVD (DVD authoring software) on a Mac that can't even burn DVDs?
I think since Apple is traditionally way ahead of others as far as creative stuff is concerned, they should have SuperDrives as standard on all their machines and just have the Combo drive as a BTO (Better Take it Out) option.:D
- arjung, on 11/01/2007, -6/+8i have the basic macbook (combo drive), and everyone ridicules me for this.
- FDL1, on 11/02/2007, -0/+32It'd be nicer if they had just upgraded to Santa Rosa back in May like all other vendors. Still, the X3100 is a decent improvement over the GMA 950. Benchmarks of all notebook graphics cards/chipsets: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards ...

Face it, multi-touch isn't up to the complex tasks that a computer has to do. (yet) - superkendall, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Nope, never happen.
Or rather, it's already happened - the trackpad as it stands is already multitouch. You are thinking about either a touchscreen or tablet form factor. And that is what Apple will not do since it makes no sense for them. We have the tablet Mac already - it's the iPhone/Touch.
- fezzasus, on 11/01/2007, -4/+11no, because i plan to buy a laptop before the next decade.
- fezzasus, on 11/02/2007, -2/+4Great, as soon as the UK store is updated one will be on it's way to me. I know its a minor update, but it's enough of a reason for everyone holding off from buying leopard because they wanted a new laptop.
- Severys, on 11/02/2007, -7/+3Just rang the UK store and they didn't know about the upgrade. They said the UK store should be updated by tomorrow.
Why are UK customers always screwed when it comes to new/upgraded products being released?- chad78, on 11/02/2007, -14/+6I don't know. Maybe because the UK doesn't make ANYTHING worth buying? You see, this is an American product sold by an American company. As much as the rest of the world wants to bitch and moan about how evil, fat, lazy, and stupid America is - it seems to me that only America, Japan, and China make anything that you people (aka - everybody else) wants to buy, (other than oil, of course, which isn't made - it's drilled). My point is - if you don't want to wait a WHOLE ***** DAY to get the brand new upgrade to the latest product - maybe you should convince someone in your country to make something worth a damn.

- chad78, on 11/02/2007, -6/+5I'm sorry, I didn't realize that Alexander Graham Bell was British. I didn't realize that he invented the phone in England.
- BossKey, on 11/02/2007, -4/+2I'm sorry, I didn' realize that the United States and the Soviet Union were part of the British empire at the time that Philo Farnsworth and Vladimir Zworykin were independently inventing television in their respective home countries.

Maybe if you educated yourself beyond what your sub-standard school system has taught you, then you wouldn't come off as such a pinheaded american moron.
@BossKey : Line 1 from Wikipedia article on John Logie Baird:

How well do you think the iPod would have sold if it didn't look the way it did, how about the iMac and every computer designed afterwards? I think you'll find Jonathan ives is british - chad78, on 11/02/2007, -3/+2Fezz - that doesn't say anything about anyone named Jonathan Ives. That doesn't say anything about a TELEPHONE either, like Dr. dbx announced. And, that page counts both people born in the UK, and people who happened to be in the UK when they invented something. So, if an American went to England and invented something - they'd be on that page. Conversely, if a Brit came to "the colonies" and invented something, you'd count them too.
And besides, my whole rant had nothing to do with inventing. It was about MAKING.
And, the whole TV thing? The dude didn't invent it alone, he and an American share the patent. From your little list of inventors "In the 1920's, John Logie Baird and American Clarence W. Hansell patented the idea of using arrays of transparent rods to transmit images for television and facsimiles respectively. " And, where do you think they patented it? In Jolly Ol' England? Hell no. They were in Hollywood, CA, making movies. Movies - BTW - invented by a little known American Inventor - Thomas Alva Edison. He also had the bright idea of the incandent electric light bulb.
TV built on at least 3 of Edison's ideas. The computer built on that. The iPod built on that. And so on, and so on. My point is, I've never heard any American whining about having to wait for the next release of the Acorn NutBook. And, why is that? Because ACORN SHUT DOWN before there was such a thing as a notebook - because they SUCKED. Either as a product or as a company - they couldn't cut it against IBM, Apple, and Microsoft. Now, Microsoft (American), Dell (American), HP (American), Apple (American), rule the computing world with an iron fist. I don't care if the car wasn't invented by Henry Ford - if it wasn't for Henry Ford, you'd be riding a horse to work today. America invented the VCR, but Japan was much better at making them. UK doesn't export *****. That, ol' bean, is my point. I don't hate England or anything - I just am ***** of all the whiny Europeans who have to wait for Japan and the US to send them their shiny new stuff. If you don't want to wait - BUILD IT YOUR DAMN SELF. - fezzasus, on 11/02/2007, -1/+5"And besides, my whole rant had nothing to do with inventing. It was about MAKING."
Your argument is null, since the macbook isn't made anywhere in the US. - danbt79, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3No mention of, oh I don't know - let's pick the first thing that comes to mind - Aviation -what about the World's largest Airliner and also the world's fastest Airliner? The only thing you actually MAKE in the US is ***** awful cars - and you can;t even sell them to your own citizens.
- Mattja, on 11/02/2007, -2/+2I love this America bashing, it's like completely legal child abuse for us British!
- danbt79, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Are you saying you'd enjoy child abuse if it was legal? My God - now I'm ashamed to be British! Thanks Mattja!

- mikeyp, on 11/01/2007, -15/+3I hate to say I told you so but I TOLD YOU SO!!! A couple of days ago I wrote on another digg posting about what upgrade the Macbooks will likely get. All the fanboys or wannabees thought the Macbook will get an aluminum shell, LED display, dedicated video, etc. In the end all you get is a better chipset which as a result means the x3100 video chip. A decent improvement no doubt. But if ANYONE thinks your going to get the features of a Macbook Pro at a Macbook price your being delusional. There will always be a CLEAR division between entry level and pro laptops from Apple. I am the proud owner of a new MacBookPro 15 inch and let me tell you that its worth every cent more than the Macbook. Personally I cannot stand the Macbooks chicklet keyboard, tiny 1280x800 and glossy screen LCD. I know not everyone can afford the Pro's but stop wishing Pro features for a non Pro price. I do believe that the Macbooks will get an aluminium shell in the coming months though.
- subtle, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6How old are you? Twelve?
- mikeyp, on 11/01/2007, -0/+012 1/2.
- MacParrot, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1I dugg you up. Apple sells laptops at two basic different performance levels. If you don't need a bigger screen or dedicated graphics card, then go for the MacBook. If your needs are greater, then save a little longer for a MacBook Pro. I currently use an iBook G4 and while it runs Leopard and does most of what I want from a laptop, it can be painfully slow for some tasks. I'm waiting for the next MBP to come out so I can grab a refurb C2D MBP for a discount.
- subtle, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6How old are you? Twelve?
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/01/2007, -7/+1aaaand my 2.16GHZ once top of the line blackbook I bought in August 2007 is now officially outdated. Damn.
At least it wasn't that huge of a tech update. The 4GB of ram and X3100 is pretty kickass, but not enough to make me throw my current macbook on Ebay and upgrade to it.
Mixed feelings, sad my brand new Macbook is already outdated. Yet happy the update was rather small and not making my laptop look completely inferior. Ah well. At least I pretty much have a few more months before I have to worry about another update lol.- Protoss, on 11/01/2007, -0/+8Officially outdated? It was a mild spec bump, not a total redesign or anything.
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/01/2007, -3/+1Well not outdated, replaced is a better word.
- ignorantcow, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I bought a 15.4" MBP in august. I'm relieved they didn't update it.
- phreak22, on 11/02/2007, -4/+35Makes me laugh, Draft-N Wifi, Gigabit Ethernet, Combo Drive - One of these three is way outdated!
- mccarron, on 11/01/2007, -1/+11Yeah I am surprised they even make those drives anymore. Why not put the SuperDrive across all laptop models?
- zazzy, on 11/01/2007, -9/+3how many people actually burn dvds? doesn't happen as much now that you've got an easier way to backup your data via time machine.
component cost is stupid low w/ a combo drive so the margins stay real high.
this is how apple posts record profits every single quarter. if you listen to their conferences they always cite 'favorable component costs.'
law of supply + demand & economies of scale baby.- kaiwai, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1You'd be surprised at the number who don't burn cds any longer given one can get massive 4gig thumb drives for a few bucks.
- burrgrinder, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1So true. I don't even burn DVDs for myself anymore except for archival purposes. External harddrives are dirt cheap now, as is flash memory, and if I need to burn a DVD, my desktop also has a burner. It's nice to have it in my macbook, but it's not something I consider vital.
- Mattja, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Not forgetting that laptops are edging towards 200gig HDD's and new desktops are almost always nearing 500gigs. It's crazy..
All the same, outdated combo drive strikes me as a poor way to market an Apple product. Considering there (was? is?) a High Def war and Sony for one are stuffing themselves with blu-ray already. I'd love to know how much cheaper these things are to produce than a DVD/RW. What exactly is so costly?

- chad78, on 11/01/2007, -2/+12Seriously, Speedyrev is right - DO NOT open it. DO NOT turn it on. And, whatever you do DO NOT install anything!
If you do - you can return it. I had the same problem when I ordered a MacBook Pro for my boss and it arrived on an upgrade day. - Braxo, on 11/01/2007, -2/+5Actually, Apple may have shipped it to you with the new Macbook's anyways.
They have been known to send upgraded ones as they arrive in stores too. But I would follow Chad's advice just to be safe. - BossKey, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Apple has both a return policy and price protection. It says so on the Apple Store receipt. Read it. I've invoked it myself.

- chad78, on 11/01/2007, -2/+1But only if they haven't installed anything. Otherwise, Apple can't sell it as "new' they have to sell it as "Refuribished" and they pass the non-savings on to you.
- asuraci, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Thanks, I'll tell him that.
- Tippis, on 11/02/2007, -3/+5...and this in spite of Digg being lit up with posts about this impending "november update" for about a month now?

- asuraci, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1He knew.
- asuraci, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2As a follow-up to a minor topic that no one cares about, he called the store and the shipping is being slow because -- drumroll -- they're giving him the latest version. (He ordered yesterday; he didn't buy it directly from the store.)

- Xolotl2, on 11/01/2007, -8/+2Folding@Home
- Mattja, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Not all of us want desktops, and few of us can afford to have both. I'm a student who really values the mobility of a laptop occasionally, but doesn't want to compromise completely on the gaming front. I don't care if the graphics arn't like ZOMG, but I do want something that will run some good stuff, wherever I am. That's why I'm getting a MBP with the Nvidia 8600... with vista installed there's Dx10 capability right there in a 15" laptop. That's me playing Crysis on fairly high settings. Laptop gaming kicks ass.
- ignorantcow, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1you don't buy a PS3 to run folding@home -_-

- ahhell, on 11/02/2007, -5/+26Why would anyone get a PS3 for gaming?
- miniboss, on 11/01/2007, -4/+16This isn't a slam, but why do people think that $1500 isn't a pro system? The architecture and components are all there for the Macbook to be an 'everything' computer but when it comes to video everyone makes excuses for why we don't need it on this "budget" system. If $1100 will get you an ugly tricked out PC notebook with mid-range video then why shouldn't $1500 do the same for Macs?
- kwago, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5This is very true and I really dont get it. As a macbook owner for 7 months now, i have never attempted to play any game on it since i figured it is probably pointless. My best guess for this is to get people to fork over more to get a MBP... and 8600GT mobile is a hell of an upgrade from what the macbook has now. It would be nice for the MB to get at least a 8400M GT, but that will never happen. The main reason to get the MBP is for better video. Once a macbook owner realizes how crappy the video card is, any apple laptop they buy from there on will probably be a pro model.
- burrgrinder, on 11/01/2007, -2/+0Maybe. I previously had a G4 Powerbook when it was the fastest thing out there. I upgraded to a Macbook. Mobile GPU performance just isn't a requirement for me, and obviously from this thread, many others. If I want to play a game, I do it on my desktop, where the screen is huge, the parts can be upgraded, and ergonomics can be adjusted.
- kwago, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2This is the exact kind of thing miniboss was talking about.
- zigspective, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1Well I think your first problem is 1500 doesn't get you integrated video, it's all the hard drive space that pushes it up.
I do agree on some aspect however, I love my MacBook but buying anything else then the base model (upgrade the RAM yourself) seems pointless and wasteful. If you want anything extra it's far smarter to go for the pro.- miniboss, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3I dont really agree with that. We are being severely overcharged for HDD space. Here's the current prices for hard drives (Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" 5400rpm, Sata) :
160GB - $80
250GB - $140
320GB - $200 (This one is brand new! 320GB internal on a notebook at this price?!?)
I max'd out my Black Macbook and even with 3GB mem, 250GB HDD and a 22" LCD then I'm still well below the $2000 entry level Macbook Pro. And that's BEFORE upgrading the pro to "professional" level specs. So essentially one can save $1000 by loading up a white Macbook and the ONLY thing missing would be a video card. For most people that's fine, but there's a good portion of the market that would pay a reasonable amount for a real video card on a 13" Macbook.
- miniboss, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3I dont really agree with that. We are being severely overcharged for HDD space. Here's the current prices for hard drives (Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" 5400rpm, Sata) :
- YoungUrban, on 11/01/2007, -1/+9I want them to come out with the ultra portable laptop we know they have up their sleeve.
- pitlord, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3They did. It's called the "iPhone."
-_-
Just wait till it gets out of beta.

- LynchMOB, on 11/02/2007, -2/+1I could be wrong, but... Isnt Santa Rosa a combo of CPU, chipset & wireless chip?
If i recall the 15" MBP revamp was not complete Santa Rose because it did not use intel's wireless chip.
How do we know these new MB's are using the intel wireless.- zioxide, on 11/02/2007, -2/+2They most likely aren't. Technically it's not the full Santa Rosa platform but it uses many components of it (CPU, Northbridge, Southbridge, memory controller, graphics chip)
- speedyrev, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2Santa Rosa is a brand platform not a chip. Different configurations are possible.
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/01/macbook-update/ - mikeyp, on 11/01/2007, -0/+0New MBP's ARE Santa Rosa. Just a different version of it.
- schutzaus, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6Are there any real tests out there for the X3100, with the popular games (HL,CS,BF2) ?? Because I have problems imagining if 499Points in 3DMark 06 will give me 5 or 50fps in BF2 lowest settings ? :)
- betasp, on 11/01/2007, -5/+2Macbook are not for gaming...
- taintedzodiac, on 11/01/2007, -0/+6My original release Macbook runs most DX9 games just fine. Macbooks are not for HIGH END gaming.
- betasp, on 11/01/2007, -5/+2Macbook are not for gaming...
- hrak, on 11/01/2007, -1/+12Now if only they'd stick this in a Mac Mini. That would make a killer HTPC!
- superkendall, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Mini is already a killer HTPC.
- Mattja, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3Mac Mini is DEAD bro.
- brjndr, on 11/02/2007, -1/+2Um, no. I am a mac user, but for my HTPC I use a vista media center box. Way more robust. It has a program guide with no monthly charges, records OTA HD signals for me, great interface (the media center interface, not vista as a whole), plays divx, xvid and everything else after installed the codecs. I can access all the media center features from my 360 in a different room over my network. And I can operate all of it with one remote through one program, no need to startup a separate program to record tv or watch a .avi or listen to music. Cable card media center boxes are expensive, but I live in SF so I can pull all my shows over OTA fine.
The Mac Mini is a good HTPC, and when it can record my TV shows for me, it will be great.

- geogia456, on 11/01/2007, -3/+0Maybe it have a better function. I am always showing my new things at millionairematch and they often said they have owned one. Wherther they have got one like this, i don't know.

- dannyross, on 11/02/2007, -4/+1I was really hoping for the switch to an aluminum case. Do you guys still think this will happen soon?
- fezzasus, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1January with the next update. This update is just a way to attract all the people like me waiting for an upgrade so they can have a system with leopard on.
Personally I prefer white, it's more apple. Any computer cam come in aluminum and black like the new iMac. - BossKey, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2You mean you are really hoping for the unbelievably crappy wireless reception that all the metal Apple laptops have always had? It's the one nice thing about the MacBooks/iBooks/old plastic PowerBooks that's so nice, is the dramatically better wireless reception over the metal-cased PowerBooks/MacBook Pros.
Oh sure, MacBook Pro owners say "I get good wireless reception." But then show them the far longer list of access points available from a MacBook sitting right next to it, and watch their face change. They often have no idea what they are missing.- mythicflux, on 11/01/2007, -1/+0I've run this same test with my iBook 1.33ghz and MacBook Pro 2.4ghz. I can confidently state that I don't know what the ***** you're talking about. I have more things found with the 802.11n card in my MBP than the 802.11g in my iBook.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong....- superxero044, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1well obviously a 802.11n is better than 802.11g. But I think he was saying if you compared macbook vs mb pro, or any generation pro vs plastic they plastic one would get better reception

- TheBigSquid, on 11/01/2007, -8/+3My cholesterol levels are low. Does that mean I can have more pizza? I like pizza and candy but candy gives me angina.
- encrypter, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5I'm also seeing an upgrade to the MBP's processor to 2.6GHZ
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/c ... - atdakore, on 11/02/2007, -6/+1Apple has not updated international sites yet. Is that a supply thing?
x3100 is a huge jump, (as good as an XBOX) and well worth it for less money.- bshellenberg, on 11/02/2007, -0/+4x3100 as good as an xbox? You are delusional!
- Zadkiel, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4Can anyone explain to me my the Canadian Apple store has things 150 dollars more?
Canada

US
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/A ...- zigspective, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4Because companies like screwing us over?
They have actually lowered the pricing difference between the two a bit, it used to be about a $200 difference. Even though the dollar is at par (or you know higher) it takes time for it to reflect in the consumer market.- Zadkiel, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I'm a student and even with the discount here it's still higher.
- kmsuperina, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Then do like I did; cross the border, buy it at the nearest Apple Store so you get the American price AND the student discount (not to mention the benefit of the high dollar), open it up AT the store, throw away the boxes, and hope to GOD that the border officials don't check you out. Besides, if they charge you duty, the difference will still be less than buying it at Apple.ca, depending on how much money you spend on gas. Although, pretty much everyone in Canada lives within 200 km of the border, so it should work out.
- Zadkiel, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I'm a student and even with the discount here it's still higher.
- tre9019, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it's complete crap. They are not only charging more, but the Canadian dollar is trading at 1.05 USD! So they're skimming a large amount from Canadians.
- warragul, on 11/01/2007, -0/+0The price in Oz is A$1599. The A$ is sitting at US$0.92 and has been around US$0.90 for months. That works out at US$1471.
- Coolwave, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2I live in North Dakota, so we see lots of Canadian money. Last week I know my bank was only giving $0.97 US for $1 Canadian even though the exchange was higher, so don't just go and blame Apple right away. They might not be getting $1.05.
- BlueStarr, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1So take a trip down to the U.S and get one. Yes it's worth the trip.
- zigspective, on 11/01/2007, -0/+4Because companies like screwing us over?
- kevdotbadger, on 11/02/2007, -0/+17Don't tell eBay members, I'm trying to sell my MacBook.
- bi0metric, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I just ordered my mac book pro 17 inch 2.4 ghz the other day and it's shipping from china as of today, I'm kind of pissed lol, I really would have like to have gotten the bigger HD, and the faster processor
- topherfitz, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Return it....14 day return policy, they won't charge you anything for the return as long as its not opened...
- pyrates, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Well you got that 2 week time frame where you can cancel your order and order the newer one.
- enr1x, on 11/01/2007, -0/+0...or sell it to me :) i want one!

- fLUx1337, on 11/01/2007, -8/+1Nice, will proberly get one this side of xmas now! ;)
People are moaning about their still being a combo drive on the lowest model, and I don't usally agree - but don't you think its slightly stupid Apple is using the DVD drive to +1 to the features the higher models have? Anyone who is reading this will know that the 0.2GHz CPU boost and 40GB extra HDD space is what your paying extra for.....but newbies don't know! They think a "superdrive" is "super!" xD - fLUx1337, on 11/02/2007, -2/+6Nice, will proberly get one this side of xmas now! ;)

- Interestingness, on 11/01/2007, -7/+1The graphics card is the real story here, it was piss poor before. Now the macbook is starting to look a little more pro...
http://ThunkDifferent.com - oblongmouth, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1So will this new graphics card give me any hope of using a Macbook for Final Cut Pro, After Effects and general designy stuff, or it going to totally crap out on me?
- superkendall, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2You could already use the Macbook for that just fine, the graphics card is mostly used for things like Motion. For video work I've used a mac mini (about the same specs) and it works great, even with 1080i video.
- tomis, on 11/01/2007, -1/+7The GPU is what really cripples the MacBook. It's a mid-range computer with a low-end card. Quite a shame really.
- pocketcalc, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1That and the absence of an expresscard slot.
- damnyooneek, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2if you need a better GPU get a macbook pro.
