- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Apple should be extremely grateful to the hacker community for making the AppleTV a device I actually want to own. I had zero interest in buying one before the hacks started to appear -- now I think it's going to be an excellent platform. I'm going to hold off a bit longer (until it's bootling Linux) but within the next 6 months or so I plan to buy one and replace my bulky HTPC.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47Forget Bluetooth dongles, think USB TV tuners.
- wonderchemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42OS X is already installed.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Here's an idea: remove the Apple category from your account if you don't want to see it.
Commenting about it isn't likely to help anything. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Man, I love the internet. Only in modern times could a "community" develop so quickly, it's amazing.
- nroose, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Why would anyone want to attach a keyboard to it?
I would attach a USB DVD drive (assuming that exists) and a big USB hard drive.
Actually, I would just get a mini. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"Telling people to turn off the Apple category is lame and just plain a dick move.
Newsflash (BREAKING: in diggspeak): "Turn it off _if you don't want to see it_". I don't want to see (for example) political stories day in and day out here, so what do I do? I turn off politics. No need to bitch and moan at every political story that hits the front page. It's called "Preferences". Use them, they're there for a reason. That makes my comments more constructive instead of wasting time posting to say I hate the story/category/company/person. Or explaining to ignorant diggers why their commenting is a waste of both their time and mine. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Woohoo! Now all that remains is to be able to hook up a USB bluetooth dongle, and get that working. Then we'll be able to use the wiimote with it thanks to Darwiimote... Then, I will be in AppleTV heaven...
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Then use a Wii?
- VeryAngryJim, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13dupes are indeed fun, but spamming is not. STFU and GTFO.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Perian + AppleTV + Bittorrent= HTPC ?
It would be sweet if we could get the thing to download torrents automatically form tvrss.net. - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8OMG OMG LOOK AT ME BITCH!
If you don't think it's interesting, then why are you here reading the comments? - stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWQnQie6vo0&eurl=
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Once Perian gets their verson 1.0 out the door it will support Matroska (.mkv)
Matroska has taken off as the HD standard for ripping BluRay & HD-DVD.
Currently I re-encode all these files in VisualHub to playnice on my PS3. But if the AppleTV can playback these files with Perian installed i'd be set. - moofree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I disagree, the price difference is significant.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8No, bitching about stories being on the front page is the dick move... Or rather it's just ignorant of the way digg works. Guess what, not all the stories on digg are tailored to YOU...
- ohhush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8eyetv does.
http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetvhybrid - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yep it does... it has a pretty good NVIDIA graphics chip and a Pentium M CPU and even 802.11N for high bandwidth streaming
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"eyeTV is not an HD tuner. It is a Digital TV tuner. Very different."
http://www.miglia.com/products/video/tvminihd/index.html
Miglia used to sell through EyeTV until a few weeks ago, hence the confusion. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I'm going to hold off a bit longer (until it's bootling Linux) "
Same, but not to replace my current DVR, rather as a complement. Once Linux is booting, it's definitely going to support network shares (or if someone gets NFS working on it, all the better), meaning I don't need to rely on its tiny little internal hard disk and I don't have to hack the thing open to install another one (and I don't have to waste the one USB port on an external hard disk or a nasty USB hub, but then again it does have the same form factor as a Mac Mini so you could probably buy one of those Mac Mini external hard drives with built in USB hubs and make use of it that way..).
DVR (with NFS shared media) + AppleTV = love. No iTunes needed. - randf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3how many people do fanboys have to kill in order to be compared to nazi germany and north korea anyways?
why be such a fixture to the fanboy world you hate so much? can't resist the temptation of that evil "Submit Comment" button?
or do you take pride in being the BIGGEST idiot on digg? - frankmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@geminitojanus
nfs works: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Mount_a_Remote_Drive_via_NFS - fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Surely if Apple "saw this coming" they'd have simply enabled USB to begin with.
I think what actually happened was Apple realised they didn't need to waste time and money making the device good, all they needed to do was make it hackable and wait. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awww, you really should just leave flaggy alone. I mean, screaming nonsense in Mac posts seems to be pretty much the only chance he has for socializing
- VeganBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@drgruney
Would an AppleTV's processor be able to handle HD encoding though? - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope Xbox media center gets ported to AppleTV.
- etjazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sure, but it's unlikely the appletv has the power to decode 720p mkv h264 files at high enough bitrates.....
- TrickyTree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am so far behind - what is it supposed to do anyway??
- Kash04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does anyone know if this thing can play hd x264's? if so my xbox/xbmc is getting replaced asap
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So that you can use applications that need a mouse and keyboard...
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Will be nice when not only Linux but Windows XP/Vista and (full) Mac OS X can install to this thing. I guess the only problem is getting the correct video drivers.
- rprather, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And you would gain a DVD player a larger HD and much better video. Sounds like a good plan to me!
- rprather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, I take my Elgato Hybrid plug it in to my MacBook CoreDuo and I can watch and record HDTV. From my standpoint whether it is just a digital tuner or an HD tuner is merely symantics.
- nils, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Burried as blogspam. Original link: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page
- dRuNk3nIrIsHmEn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You submitted this story an hour after he did.
- drjones78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mac mini is twice the price, unless you get a refurb
- drgruney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@ohhush
eyeTV is not an HD tuner. It is a Digital TV tuner. Very different. - randf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1all that energy wasted typing, just to post a bitch? Al Gore would be very disappointed in you
- punkrockscks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it runs on a 1Ghz Dothan (pentium m)... its got sse3.
(toward the bottom)
http://www.command-tab.com/2007/03/22/a-tour-of-the-appletv-insides/ - MinnesotaTwins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The eyeTV hybrid requires a dual g5, or core duo/core 2 duo processor in order to process an HDTV signal. As stated above, this device is just a digital tuner.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@geminitojanus (#5923523)
As many people have pointed out it's a perfect MythTV front-end box. - Jammypac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yes it can. I've been watching "Planet Earth" at 1280x720/5mbps/24fps/h.264 on my ATV over the past few days and it is gorgeous and smooth.
- Alkivar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes and no ... 1080i/1080p video decoding is probably beyond the hardware capabilities... but 720i/p isnt the video chipset is only a NVidia GeForce Go 7300 64 MB.
check the Awkward TV wiki for more info:
http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page - kodoTM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this mean I will be able to run native apps on this like The Filter for iTunes? I can imagine a tool like this really improving Apple TV.
With people hacking the aTV so fast, we can only assume the same will happen to the iPhone with 3rd party apps etc. - laut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The description says USB is working, but not what USB is supposed to be used for. Attaching a USB mouse? Or an external HDD for increased storage?
- briangig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3this is awesome...I like to think Apple saw this coming, as they seem to be pretty smart, and they left it 'open' intentionally...Depending on where this goes, I would seriously consider getting one, most likely I will.
- gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mac Mini all the way, man. FULLY customizable already with no hacks needed, and it can act as a PVR through FireWire.
- sharly2007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0personally i can't see why people would actually spend the time trying to convert the Apple TV into a fully functioning Mac system - fine for experiments so you can say "I managed to do it", but how many of your average consumers will do this? Wouldn't a normal Mac Mini with Front Row work pretty much the same? http://www.gwafi.com/home.html http://www.gwafi.com/links.html

- sims5487, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I'm going to have to also go with "what the *****"
Why not just buy a mac mini? The price difference is not that huge and it's probably worth not having to go through all this *****. I don't get it... maybe I'm not supposed to. -
