That would be /default/ sick. - SteaminTmann, on 10/12/2007, -5/+265 bucks says there will be a project to try to get linux on it!
- alevel27mage, on 10/15/2007, -1/+20How many people checked their Mail.app when the "new message" noise played at about 29 seconds left?

it already runs OS X - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Each day buying one of these is becoming more tempting.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I don't know for sure but I believe it is using a notebook drive. If that's the case then soon you can put a 300GB drive in it.
- yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you could always be the first one to do it...

Video: http://www.ozy.us/stuff/ExternalBootOnAppleTV.mov - ericdano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10If you can get it to boot externally, then you could use pretty much any size disk. I'm waiting for the patch/hack to get it to completely run on an external HD.
Though, I'm surprised no one has used a 2.5 IDE connect to 3.5 ide connect and used a 500 gig drive to see if that works......... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That would be sweet.
- Ozy311, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Please be gentle to my server! I don't run awkwardtv.org, but the movie i made is on my personal server.
- arkive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Next, do this from a USB drive that can boot on standard PC's as well.
AKA, screw Apple and all corporate big business."
You mean corporate big businesses that make things like USB drives and standard PCs? - crazzyeddie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's because the fan inside just blows the air up toward the top. It doesn't exhaust air.
From AnandTech: "Note that the top of the Apple TV is actually a heatsink used to dissipate the heat from the CPU, GPU and chipset; the only fan present in the system is at the bottom and it doesn't directly cool a heatsink, it indirectly moves air around the upper surface of the unit. " - adc86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Bite you? How? Does it have anything to do with that little blue icon with a circle and a cross through it? OOooo I think it might...
- AaronX2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The AppleTV was designed with the USB port only for 'diagnostic use' it has no real function which the end user would find useful. Until they just figured out how to boot it from the USB. You can load a hacked OS or maybe even Linux from the external HDD without voiding the warranty.
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+63.5" IDE needs a 12V supply as well as a 5V supply. 2.5" IDE provides only 5V. Unless the AppleTV has a 12V line in there somewhere (to be expected for actual desktops, but not necessarily for an embedded device like this one), you'll need an external power supply.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Because:
1) its a 40G 2.5 internal PATA drive, which, even if you wanted to replace it and kill your warranty, goes to 160G right now? An external USB 2.0 drive can be a terabyte or more? And even though you can stream wirelessly, isn't synching more reliable?
2) its there :p - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Guys, forget putting a new hard drive in, just map in a network share. Much better. Cheers to Awkward.
- crazzyeddie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mirror anyone? DuggMirror didn't get it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Don't like it? Customize > Uncheck Technology -> Apple. Problem solved. But at the rate this is, they really need to add another section for Ubuntu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does that mean this will work in the USB ???

- terasurfer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's useful because it opens doors to modify the way the device works without having to crack the case and void the warranty.

- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And I'm willing to bet your P4 box is ugly, heavy, wide, and uses a LOT more energy.
There's more to the equation than meets the eye. - CrAsHnBurN45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does anyone know how big of a hard drive it can use?
- Mephux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2haha I did as-well..lol
- rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're going to hook up a larger form factor 3.5" hard drive, just get a USB external. It obviously doesnt have any problems booting off one. :-) External cases are so cheap these days anyway
- CovardeAnonimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2bjeanes: by "months end" i believe you mean "early january", right ?

Last Updated on: 11-Jan-07 - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My take is it was designed to boot from USB, but disables it for other devices once it's booted. That way an Apple service engineer has the facility to fit a new hard drive and load up the OS again from an external recovery unit (be that a DVD-ROM or hard disk etc.). This fits as the guy in th this video managed to make it boot to some kind of recovery screen. I understand that's actually a self-healing mechanism built onto the hard drives, but there's nothing to say an engineer could not do the same or similar from an external unit setup slightly differently. Such media would, howerver, be strictly Apple Certified Engineer only, if it exists.
I would think then that the USB driver on the AppleTV OS is heeled to stop it accepting devices. If it can be replaced with a non-heeled version that would almost certainly open doors. I think they are working on that but I don't know if they got anywhere. - jamesrdorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lmfao, I didnt even notice it until I just read it hear... yeah I did..
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They could make a very small OS that could fit in a flash drive that can automatically patch the aTV when it loads, so one doesn't have to open it.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Can someone explain why it is beneficial to boot from an external USB drive vs the way is was designed?
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh man, I totally did. took me a whole 5 minutes to figure out it was the movie, after I replayed that section of the video

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3648332 - uchimalbanish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Quite doubtful. How do you think is it really possible?
- lanboots, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0Have anyone bought this, some feedback please ?
http://www.lanboots.com/ - rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm hoping it will eventually with enough hacking, the AppleTV would make a terrific PVR.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1At that point, I think we can call it "mplayer for AppleTV"... mplayer is the code XBMC is based on, and I think we can ditch the name "XBMC"...
- squintioch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0appletvlinux.com is already parked and listed on ebay
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1aTVMC? nah.
- DaveMode, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Site must also be hosted on an Apple TV.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I sure hope someone posts every goddamned Apple TV tweak, mod, hack, or booger-wiping. But after the UNBOXING, how can anything compare?
