- Cannon13, on 01/02/2008, -3/+273"has heard reliable confirmation...expected...as rumored...presumably..is said to be...is also said to be...remains unknown, but we've heard...The possibility...suggested by both rumors...not previously been explicitly confirmed."
My goodness! It's practically written in stone! - Bighaugs, on 01/02/2008, -1/+48"multi-touch trackpad"? Isn't the MacBook's trackpad already multi-touch? The two-finger right-click workaround, and all that?
- dagamer34, on 01/02/2008, -2/+35Buzzword for 2008: "sub-notebook".
- solistus, on 01/02/2008, -0/+28I'm not saying it won't happen, but calling a macrumors post any sort of 'confirmation' is ludicrous.
Two minutes on Google found three other predictions from macrumors of a sub-notebook:
http://www.macrumors.com/2007/02/16/apple-sub-note ...
http://www.macrumors.com/2006/12/04/ultra-thin-12- ...
and way back in 2000:
http://www.macrumors.com/2000/12/13/apple-sub-note ... - cr4wl3r, on 01/02/2008, -6/+33Macs don't use BIOS they use EFI.
EFI can boot from firewire, usb, and other media; and are far superior to BIOS. - sup4141, on 01/02/2008, -3/+25read the article. it says apple will be offering an external drive with the laptop.
- phoomp, on 01/02/2008, -2/+18The article confirms beyond any doubt that this is indeed a rumor.
- rootnik, on 01/02/2008, -8/+23The folks who will shell out $2000+ for this are not to cheap to buy an external DVD drive.
- ajmarenco, on 01/02/2008, -1/+16flash memory instead of physical HD ... that would be great !! but again rumors.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -1/+15Do you remember when people said that you absolutely needed floppy drives?
- wonderboy2005, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13Also, flash memory is much less power intensive, partially due to its lack of moving parts. Its also more resilient in terms of shock and wear & tear. Better all around - just more expensive.
- proton, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11I love my linux-based eee pc ssd subnotebook but don't think they are for everyone. I'm sure an Apple sub will be nice but expensive.
- seinman, on 01/02/2008, -1/+12AT&T is a GSM provider. EVDO is a CDMA technology. Nice attempt at *****, though, i'll grant you that much.
- scottstevenson, on 01/02/2008, -4/+15It's impossible to say how a device which hasn't actually been announced will work, but Mac hardware has "target disk mode" that makes installation in this sort of situation pretty easy.
For example, if I want to install an OS on my laptop without using the optical drive, I can connect the laptop to my desktop with a firewire cable, then hold down the "t" key while booting the laptop. The laptop's drive will show up on the desktop machine as a mounted volume, and acts just like an external hard drive. Also works on Xserves, which is helpful if the server is a cluster node and doesn't have an optical drive or video card. - naonao, on 01/02/2008, -2/+12Honestly find this hard to believe, I would like a 12" laptop myself but a sub-notebook just seems like a waste of money, and doesn't seem like something Apple would do either. Then again, I have been wrong before...
- endlessrayne, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10I have a 12" thinkpad x61s. I don't even miss the optical drive. You just can't beat the portability.
- AshamedAmerican, on 01/02/2008, -2/+12Did you just shamelessly plug your own submitted article?
- Ogremindes, on 01/02/2008, -4/+14Ubuntu will run great, Vista will still be Vista.
- akinscd, on 01/02/2008, -3/+13spoken like a true redmond fanboy
- tolbs, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10They should really make docks for these. I'm starting to become a thinkpad fanboy because I love just being able to drop my ultraportable x61s into it's dock, that way I can have a CDROM (theres one on the dock) when I need to, and I save myself some unnecessary bulk when lugging the thing around.
I would love to do the same with my mac book pro, i get sick of bringing it to the desk and then plugging it into the DVI port, my usb/firewire connectors for my monitor, my speakers, etc. If I could just drop it in a dock that would be much nicer.
Just think what Apple could come up with as a docking solution :). - naonao, on 01/02/2008, -1/+10OPTICAL drive!
- AlexFinn, on 01/02/2008, -3/+12look up the word rumor ..
doesnt mean its the truth right? - mrfreeziexp, on 01/02/2008, -6/+15After all, it will be a revolutionary device. Never has any company offered an external optical drive.
- AndreasTh, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7But then you don't have to get that model. I'd be very surprised if Apple excluded the internal optical drive from every model of theirs.
If they do announce a small notebook (or sub..) it will be bought by people who can do without the CD/DVD on the go, and not by those who must have it all the time.
So I guess you don't want/need this new micro model :) - AshamedAmerican, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8"We like to keep our dreams small, do we?" - Phantom Limb
- ramsinks.com, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8Apple is said to be offering an external optical drive with the sub-notebook
lol. Ya, sounds like - NOT APPLE. - joel8x, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6Ever heard of the Eee PC? Optical media is going the way of the floppy.
- aussieNickuss, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6It's a predictions for MacWorld douche.....The last place a rumor would be posted is apple.com.
- epyon180, on 01/02/2008, -2/+8I have a macbook pro and I though it already had a multi-touch trackpad. I can scroll with two fingers, what would this new model have that all current apple laptops don't?
- NikZ, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5If you have Developer Tools installed, go to /Developer/Applications/Performance Tools/ and launch "Quartz Debug". Now move the slider in the "User Interface Resolution" window (Tools > User Interface Resolution menu, if it's not already there) to anything greater than 1.00 / 72dpi.
Now go relaunch Safari, or Mail (or even Finder) to see the effects of Resolution Independence as it is right now in Leopard - it's not pretty. To return to normal resolution, move the slider back to 1.00 and relaunch the affected apps.
If you don't have (or want) DevTools installed, here's some screenshots I brewed up earlier:
Mail @ 108dpi: http://www.spirila.com/images/Mail108DPI.png
Finder @ 108dpi: http://www.spirila.com/images/Finder108DPI.png
(make sure you view them at 100% if your browser fits-to-window)
I believe you can also do this in Tiger, can't remember for sure.
(ack... that was meant to be @Firehed, sorry) - NikZ, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5As opposed to a false fact? :¬P
- JoeDiggsIt, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Wow, I even hate the FAKE Steve Ballmer.
- anotherjeff, on 01/02/2008, -6/+11or, those who shell out $2000+ for it wont have any cash left to buy an external DVD drive
- padfoot, on 01/02/2008, -1/+6You're new here aren't you?
- dezman2003, on 01/02/2008, -1/+5very well considering apple with probably charge around 1200-1800 dollars for theirs.
- lengau, on 01/02/2008, -1/+5So... to get it to work again, you need another Mac?
- nenitiko, on 01/02/2008, -4/+8The article fails to mention the rumor that this "Device" is a rebranded Asus Eee.
- naonao, on 01/02/2008, -2/+6Macs use EFI, not BIOS.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Handbrake???
- wellyuk, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4I could afford the several apple products I've bought over the years. What the ***** are you talking about? Don't be an idiot. Think before you press submit.
- judgeFire, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerBook_Duo
I had a Duo 270c back in the day, with the medium dock. Smallest portable I've had so far, let's see if this new beats it. - molochi, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I keep seeing this word "subnotebook" paired with '13" Screen'. I thought subs were supposed to be SMALL.
What I want is a small Macbook Pro with a 13" 16:9 screen, a real 256MB videocard, and decent speed (no singlecore ULV crap). SSHD would be a nice option but I'd skip it, don't care if it has a touch screen, No DVD is fine, don't care, While their at it, mill the case out of an aluminum billit and use it as part of the heat sink. - MadSquirrel, on 01/02/2008, -2/+5Extensible Firmware Interface - and this is so different from a PC Boot How? I realize that I'm not a MAC person, but the bury brigade is rather harsh on this subject.
How about I promise to refer to a MAC Firmware boot process as EMI and you all take a chill pill. - Someprogr, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Used sub-notebooks going for $30? What kind did you buy?
- Dylson, on 01/02/2008, -5/+8UPDATE: At the end of the keynote, one lucky attendee will be thrown into the sun by Mr. Steve Jobs himself.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -2/+5Can't wait to see your You Tube Manifesto justifying shooting up your school!
- dnields, on 01/02/2008, -4/+7so what exactly does that link prove other than there are software companies that sell 'antivirus' software for Macs?
There have been no viruses for OS X as of yet. There have been a handful of "proof of concept" maladies, but still no full-blown, honest-to-goodness viruses yet. The only reason a Mac user should buy antivirus software is if they have Windows machines on their network. Those software suites for Mac only detect Windows viruses anyway so you can find them and quarrantine them before your Mac spreads them to your Windows machines. - sonicularulus, on 01/02/2008, -4/+7make it cheap and affordable and ill be happy
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Agreed. MacRumors doesn't confirm anything -- they just stir the pot like any rumor site does.
- SgtBlue, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4Right, because leaks never happen! Come on...
