- FreakinRepublic, on 10/25/2008, -3/+48*quivers in anticipation*
- Lula87, on 10/26/2008, -7/+47When they run out of big cats, Apple should name their subsequent operating systems after Full House characters.
- killtrocity, on 10/26/2008, -0/+38I believe one of the main changes in Snow Leopard are speed gains and less bloat, that is to say that the Mac OS was bloated in the first place. To my experience, it is not.
- AppleMacStud, on 10/26/2008, -4/+35With what Apple has planned for Snow Leopard, this OS will be well worth the upgrade even without any new features. When I first heard that this wasn't going to include any new features I thought to myself that Apple was going to have a tough time convincing people to upgrade but after taking a closer look as to how incredibly fast and optimized this OS will be and fully taking advantage of 64-bit, I was blown away.
I can't wait. - enzomedici, on 10/26/2008, -7/+37I never understood people's problem with the finder.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -3/+32I gave your mom the latest version of my seed, so...
- BlueStarr, on 10/26/2008, -4/+30Now you and I both know that's not true.
- MrSkills, on 10/26/2008, -1/+23Yeah, they've stopped with the cats thing now and moved on to farm animals.
- BossKey, on 10/26/2008, -1/+21If you had actually read anything about Snow Leopard, you'd know that it's all about optimization, multithreaded performance, in other words the stated intention is to be the exact opposite of "bloat." This is the major idea behind Snow Leopard. But I guess you just had to get that snarky boilerplate comment in there.
- chrisc3, on 10/26/2008, -4/+23does this mean we can expect a leak soon?
- peestandingup, on 10/26/2008, -1/+16I believe he succeeded. No Apple font for you!
- carterx, on 10/26/2008, -1/+14Can't wait to see the full version and see the difference in OS speed
- knodi, on 10/26/2008, -5/+18There is one thing wrong with OSX and thats the finder. The finder is weak. They need major overhaul of finder, not just performance but in terms of usability.
- wyrdness, on 10/26/2008, -0/+12The next version is rumored to be called Bison.
- peestandingup, on 10/26/2008, -1/+13I believe you're thinking of Ubuntu.
- kday, on 10/26/2008, -0/+12I can't wait for OS 11 Yogi
- hiro, on 10/26/2008, -1/+12But "*****" will make it
- ilgaz, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11If you want to see what kind of thing a file manager written in Cocoa is and how it makes such a difference, get Path Finder Trial from http://www.cocoatech.com . Especially recently released 5.0 version (only compatible with 10.5) shows the true power of Leopard APIs and stuff like fsevents.
It is a clean trial only and can be removed easily by dragging to trash, that is why I can easily advertise as a user. - Kelmon, on 10/26/2008, -1/+11I'm thinking that "Ass" may be vetoed by the marketing department.
- digitalpencil, on 10/26/2008, -1/+11oh.. because Windows is for grownups and the rest of us are using fisherprice.. original.
- FIip, on 10/26/2008, -1/+10Please let there be full ATI HD48xx GPU support in this build.
- MrSkills, on 10/26/2008, -0/+9Read the article. They are re-writing the finder.
- bsd3, on 10/26/2008, -0/+9tdude, this is not a service pack it is an new OS...
- ilgaz, on 10/26/2008, -0/+9There are leaks everywhere but using a full operating system downloaded from third party and labelled "beta" is something like software way of committing suicide. In both technical and security sense.
I know they will digg me down but it is really really stupid thing to do. - BlueStarr, on 10/26/2008, -2/+10eww
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -2/+10How much did she charge you? I feel like I over payed.
- Shaggy3, on 10/26/2008, -0/+7Boom
- roxgod666, on 10/26/2008, -0/+6You got it dude
- digitalpencil, on 10/26/2008, -0/+6^ do you mean you keep ***** up programs because you've stopped downloading updates?
- hiro, on 10/26/2008, -0/+6Apart from wondering what "Closwed sourse" is, everyone knows OS X can run fine on non Apple software, and has done fine since the switch to Intel. What is your point and how is it relevant to the story?
- vij26, on 10/26/2008, -0/+6And I'm still stuck with Tiger-_-
- BlueStarr, on 10/26/2008, -1/+6Cocoa Touch? You mean the entire OS? That would be a no.
Snow= light, fast, full Cocoa and much, much more.
http://www.macrumors.com/2008/10/24/apple-patent-p ... - jonsterling, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5You mean “on non-Apple hardware”, right?
- rezist, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Here are a few links of detailed reasons apple users dislike Finder.
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/finder.ars/ ...
http://daringfireball.net/2002/11/that_finder_thin ... - jackyyll, on 10/26/2008, -1/+6Can't wait for Joey Gladstone addition.
- Kelmon, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5In all honesty, the only problems that I have with the Finder are the lack of a Cut option (you already have Copy) and that Folders cannot be sorted to the top of a list of folder contents so that drilling down is fast. I'd also like to see the fast folder filtering that was possible in 10.3 make a return as well as Spotlight searching.
- tidu, on 10/26/2008, -1/+6OS Danny Tanner will be really clean but overly protective of your programs
- rezist, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5I'm wondering how exactly you've got OS X running on Apple software? I have Mac OS 9 Running in OS X but.....?
- Doktag, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4OS 11 Winnie the Pooh
- Francky, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4Well that would be up to ATI, not Apple.
As you might know, the Mac's uses and EFI instead of a Bios, so the graphics cards need a different firmware. ATI did release a card for Mac's a while back, the HD 3870, with a proper firmware. (With drivers for it)
So it would be up to them to release a HD4800 if they so chooses. - Morphiuz, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4I heavily second that. Bravo.
- protodon, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4Oh mylanta!
- blackjack75, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3The part about HFS compression is the most intriguing to me. Similar technology has been available on other platforms for years and is basically never used since you don't to waste time uncompressing and recompressing the data but this seems different:
It is designed to be decompressed only (modification will require unpacking and repacking)
This could optimize some stuff such as OS footprint... could this be related to new upcoming hardware that requires woriking with minimal disk space? Anyway any optimization is welcome, even for more powerful machines. - tanaciousp, on 10/26/2008, -2/+5I'm still pissed it won't support G5's.
- umbrellainabin, on 10/26/2008, -2/+5stop being ricidulous
- kingfoot, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3i heard rumor it will be bears for os 11. also they will return to numeric instead of roman numerals.
cant wait for OS 11 Kodiak - BlueStarr, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2Which programs in particular Goosegoosego? You do know that buying cheap ram can have a negative affect on programs, right?
Do a clean install.
You may have some preference files that are corrupt and that's why you're having issues with updates.
I feel for you man it sucks when your system isn't working like it should. Take it in to the Apple store and have them check it out. If they can't locate the problem ask to have them switch and give you a new or refurbed computer. Oh if you do go to the Apple store make an appointment first. Call ahead and ask how long the wait is and all that. It's best to go during the weekday while everyone is at work. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2You'll see it sooner than that. ATI has already said they're coming out with a 48x0 card for OS X.
- ilgaz, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2Apple makes real, under the hood changes instead of copying fashions created by other vendors (themselves!).
While it is plain sad that it can't be delivered to PPC64, I respect their philosophy on Snow Leopard. Finally they seem to have found a way to make both 64bit and end user/developer friendly OS which has the true building blocks of "Cloud Computing", I mean the real cloud computing/grid stuff. -
