- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Is there really an incredible demand for linking articles on Digg to Portugese translations in every single thread? Or is it just spamming the site? Serious question.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -27/+43Well, I'm sure you won't be seeing this at the Apple Store.
- bristolz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23"I really liked her. She's beautiful. Long legs, great *****, killer face, smaaaart. But I had to stop seeing her."
"She sounds great. Why'd you have to stop seeing her, for crying out loud?!"
"Well, I found out that, in addition to English, she also spoke Spanish."
"Ewww! Skanky."
"My point exactly. She needs to be pure." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+31...but it looks pretty on the outside!
- Perc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21Macs are a lot less ugly than the vast majority of the competition. It might not matter to you, but to some people aesthetics are way more important than "a lot of FPS in video games for as little money as possible" when shopping around for a new computer. I don't blame them.
Also, even if a mac comes preinstalled with windows it's still the only computer on the planet that can run Mac OS X without breaking any laws. - rocketrye12, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21I can hear John C. Dvorak snickering all the way over here in NY!
- thehead21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16They have updated and now any of the Intel macs are available with Windows Xp preinstalled.
- br0ken1128, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Now I WOULDN'T buy one that ONLY had XP on it, but if I had the option for a pre-installed machine with both ... maybe
but really I'm selling my Toshiba laptop and my G4 powerbook and then getting a new powerbook so I can set up a dual boot machine myself.
Sometimes I needed both OS's and I hated lugging both machines around - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15So I guess they aren't brand new since they have to install XP on the systems...
- swindmill, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17"why own a mac then if it has windows? They cost more for slower parts"
How does a comment like that get dugg? First, they aren't slower parts. Second, it's a much nicer machine than a Dell, et al. Most importantly, it runs OS X and Windows, which no other machine can do.
Talk about being zealous and in denial . . . . - aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20I pity anyone who buys one of these. For one, Bootcamp is beta software, so it can/will be improved upon with the release of Leopard. On top of that, buying Windows pre-installed means that the company partitioned the drive for you. What if they didn't partition it the way you would want them to? And if you re-partitioned with Bootcamp again, then you wouldn't have a copy of XP to re-install.
My advice to anyone wanting to do this: wait for Leopard. It will be much better than Tiger, it won't be aged, and it will have a finished copy of Bootcamp (if they choose to keep calling it that) pre-installed. That way you can go about your Windows installing ways as much and as often as you wish.
No digg. - i6koi, on 10/12/2007, -19/+27Sometimes an empty box speaks a thousand words.
- isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Where's the disclaimer by MacMall stating that Boot Camp is beta? I wonder what type of support quality new customers can expect when they explain that their "new" machines that came with Windows preinstalled start acting up.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Remember when Dvorak said Apple will soon make the slow transition to Windows, and everyone flamed him? Twit: Dvoraks lost it
- booc0mtaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Um,
this is for people that, forunately or not, wouldn't dare undertake an install of windows ... ever. Most people here don't fit into that category, but there are plenty of computer users who do, believe me.
Would those people benefit from the extra complexity of bootcamp, dual-boot, etc.? probably not, but surely they know someone *cough* us *cough* that could help them. - apersaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Blasphemy!
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No, it does not void the warranty. Apple just doesn't support it. It's software, not hardware.
- Venkman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5so you could have one computer with both Windows and OS X on it eliminating the need to have another computer sitting around?
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ladies, don't you worry your pretty little heads.
- Perc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10... just like windows is dead because a couple of oddball manufacturers and retailers sell computers with linux preinstalled. right?
- MetalGod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You don't have to buy a pink iPod skin just because they sell them.
Similarly, just because Macs can run XP doesn't mean they have too.
Having the option to run XP ALONG WITH OS X is a cool feature in my opinion. - eviltypeguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"For humans, it's more about the Hz than the FPS. Once we hit around 70 FPS or so, we don't notice any difference above that."
-- You know, I hear this myth spread around a lot. The problem with this statement is that it assumes that everyone is the same. Just as "most people" can't hear things above a certain frequency, some people can. Just as most people probably can't tell the different between 70 fps and 120 fps, some can. - acceptab1euname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you look at the main page of that site, you'll notice that it appears to be a tech-blog. I say "appears to be" because I don't speak portugese. I suspect that the user's posts are definitely blogspam. At least they've had the decency to keep it out of the story submissions.
- theprez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ mark1372
I agree. What's with the portuguese links? I looked through Hanthus's comment history and it appears that a great deal of them are simply links to what appears to be a portuguese blog site. That's spam to me. Good thing we have the block feature. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I bet you are wrong. Apple probably won't do this with their stores because they don't want the hassle. But if stores offering both OS's installed means more sales then I doubt they will object.
- toveling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They sell plain jane iMacs for about $100 cheaper than the Apple store - are there any downsides to buying from places like this?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"designed by a person who didnt know when to stop designing the box"
I would really love for you to expand on this. Actually, I'm not so sure about your whole post. - The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5For me, a machine that can run OS X and Windows is a better buy than a machine that can just run one OS, now I don't exactly like Windows (i think the OS sucks), but i like my games.
My only problem, is i think it's too early to be doing this, Boot Camp is still beta software, going to have issue with people wiping out their data. - booc0mtaco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6All of you are missing the larger reason... it doesn't matter the fps if your MONITOR only refreshes at 75 Hz. someone alluded to this, but it really does not matter if you can put out 120 fps, or 330 or whatever, if the screen that you are viewing it at refreshes 60 times a second (60 Hz). 298 fps on a 60 Hz monitor = 60 fps
Also, you can test this whole myth vs. reality. Change your monitors refresh rate until you can't see any flickering, and that's where your detection threshhold is. Can't tell anymore at 75 Hz.... golden, you know your max. Need to bump it up to 80 or 90? Go ahead. That's just determining your max fps you can detect. - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7But totally misinterpreting what Dvorak said is lamer.
- JamesBrown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why wouldn't you have a copy of XP? I assume when you buy XP from them they'd provide you with the CD.
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Why would you want a Linux server that only ran part of the time?
- Perc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8The answer is pretty simple, IMO. There are probably many potential mac switchers out there that need a good performing windows system every now and then. Having a secondary desktop system is not practical for everyone, and having another notebook to lug around along with your macbook is not my idea of mobility.
Dual booting sucks, but it's still better than a virtual machine if you really need it for serious work. - fatalea1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was wondering how long till some one brought up the old macs cost more line. Get some new material.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What next... Apple retailers selling Macs with Linux pre-installed?? Blasphemy! Oh wait...
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/apple/ - dontbejack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I must concur. I don't believe in running XP on a Mac since that's really just ruining the entire experience. You buy a Mac for the OS, not just the pretty case. Apple should've never put Boot Camp out there.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Zoasterboy: if you're going to have your comment buried, at least get it done because people disagree with you rather than because your comment is boring, horribly written, and wastes their time.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4QFR? Quarterly Financial Report?
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Finally, I can play Solitaire on a Mac!
- dmsteg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That's what i was thinking... you know they're not coming off the boat this way.
As a matter of fact, knowing how Apple is about pricing policies, I wouldn't be surprised if these retailers were asked to stop bundling XP with their systems like this. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hanthus. Enough with the link spam.
Anyone tired of Hanthus's translation links, click on the circle-cross beside his posting time. - fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -27/+29Seriously, why is his comment buried? He just stated you probably won't be seeing this at the Apple Store and he's probably right. How on earth can that be a reason to bury it? What, you don't agree with what he said? You don't like his name? It just happened to be full moon and your girlfriend just dumped you on MySpace?
Grow up already and start thinking for yourselves. - quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5no it states that it used bootcamp when you click for more info, even mentions that it is beta software and is time limited, also states that it is for evaluation purposes only, but at the same time they won't get to see all the warnings that come up when you actually download and run bootcamp (with its 4 or 5 warnings stating its beta software and you are at your own risk if it screws up your system), but you also doesn't state how large the windows/mac partitions are.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9No.
The vast majority of people have absolutely no problem with windows whatsoever
People do like pretty boxes though - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmm...I'm not sure why you think OS X is useless. I have access to both Windows and OS X at home and I spend 95% of my time using OS X. Not because there is some OS X only program I need but because it's a better user experience. It's arguably more advanced than XP and there is actually some quality software for it.
If you are bored sometime you might want to read the excellent articles about OS X at Ars Technica. Start with 10.4 (current release) and work your way back.
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/1 - whoutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apple shouldnt have put out boot camp, so people would fry their computer, and then they would be off the internet. and i say, every time a windows user fries their mac book an angel gets its wings!
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, the comments are just about even now that rose got caught censoring digg. hummm http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/06/04/20/1538256.shtml
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually, where does it say "installed". It's unclear about this. I'm quite sure that it's not installed and the mac is sold with the windows os boxed. In fact... go to "Additional details" and see this description:
" iMAC 20" 2Ghz Intel Core Duo Desktop + Windows XP Pro
20" 2.GHZ Intel Core Duo, 512MB 667 DDR2 SDRAM, 250GB Serial ATA HD, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive,Gigabit Ethernet, Built-in AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth, Built-in iSight, OS X 10.4.4 Tiger "
Nothing about it being installed. -
