- Niten, on 10/11/2007, -4/+113@airwalkery2k: For what it's worth, that extra 30¢ not only buys you DRM-free music, but also a significantly higher bitrate.

Super iTunes 7.2 Alpha Turbo Tournament Edition - APHughes, on 10/11/2007, -21/+97Free Music is DRM Free
- mishsquish, on 10/11/2007, -9/+81DRM-Free stuff? Awesome, time to start buying music.
CDs and DRM files are just UGH. I'd rather take the plunge and use.. "alternative" sources. But now I'll open up my wallet to support the cause. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+62Just installed, so far can't find any DRM-free tracks.
- pixelperfect, on 10/11/2007, -15/+58Wow, Windows Vista after only 7 years... that was fast.
- BamaStangGuy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46It's a good day for consumers. Very glad to see this happening.
- AngryPunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40Because Apple has to re-ink every deal they struck with the major labels in order to legally distribute the music DRM-free. These things take time...
And to the guy above, eMusic is very limited in thier catalog. All the geeks always spout that out "eMusic is DRM free", well eMusic doesn't carry any major label artists, and like it or not, thats what the majority of the public is looking for. - Blabster, on 10/11/2007, -16/+52Direct link to the download : http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iTunes7/Win/061-3266.20070529.xSw4n/iTunesSetup.exe

It was an error in Vista not in iTunes, as Microsoft already stated. You
have to be patient with Redmond, they always need a little more time to
get things done. - a0me, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31>> It only makes sense right? I know I'll get dugg down or even ignored when I say that, but who seriously ever got affected by DRM?
Anybody who'd want to move their music from one computer/hard drive to another without having to worry about the whole authorizing computer thing. - wonderchemist, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31256kbit/s Advanced Audio Codec (AAC)
- JustinSaunders, on 10/11/2007, -8/+36Put your money where your mouth is folks. When this goes live, purchase as much DRM free music as you can afford. Let the sales figures show those other record companies that we're not all music copying, terrorism funding pirates.
- dvandelay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26Podcasts are now sorted properly... "The" is ignored when it is the first word in the podcast's name.

Just think of the DRM songs (as opposed to non-DRM songs) as a MINUS - makes me feel better. - bitemark, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23Regarding the iPhone, I meant, DRM-free goodies!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+28www.emusic.com
DRM free since its inception. - bitemark, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19But remember...it wasn't Apple's idea to have DRM, it was an agreement with the greedy labels to offer DRM content. Yes, you can rip it out, but, can't get better quality.
If you want to conserve good karma, you'll pay for DRM-free goods. If you want better quality content, you'll pay for that too.
You CAN tell the difference with many types of music if the quality is better.
If you want to conserve good karma, you'll pay for DRM-free goods. If you want better quality content, you'll pay for that too.
Most of the 2+Billion songs purchased from the iTunes Store are purchased by folks that don't want to bother with (or even know about) torrents. And they love good karma. - airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25Death to DRM! No more digital shackles! Long live the free music! Another 30 cents per track! No more... wait a sec...
Well, it could have been a little more perfect. Ah well, it's a step, and hopefully not a step away from the ol' dollar price-system. - easy4lif, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19its a start, now, all you that complain about DRM go out an buy a iTunes plus song.
- BugDave, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19The real question is, if apple happens to offer a free single of the week from EMI will it be without DRM?
- TomP, on 10/11/2007, -22/+37***** the RIAA
- rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15The Zune hasn't made a million sales, that is a predicted figure to end June.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14So remember, this (tournament edition) is the only version you'll be allowed to use at iTunes Olympics 2007
- r3zonance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12"does this mean itunes "plus" songs that have been de-drmed through itunes will play in like linux and stuff?"
Yes, they will play on anything that plays AAC files. - lwdupont, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Agreed.. downloaded it, but no DRM-free tracks.. I'm thinking tomorrow sometime, maybe right before Steve's talk with Bill at D.
- PerennialTears, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I would check the EMI artists. That was the first, and I believe, only company that signed on with apple to do DRM-Free tracks so far.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Don't forget that the album price is still the same $9.99
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14@EztliNahua

"And kudos for the DRM free step!"
*****. They are making consumers pay MORE for something that should be standard.
-----
Last time I checked, full albums are still the same price. Who buys individual songs anyway? In my case, this means double the bitrate, no DRM (***** logging in to iTunes to play a song) and the same price (which, even though it's more expensive in Sweden, is still a pretty good price). Nothing but goodness :) - powerbook86, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Macrumors.com - "Despite the software update, the Apple iTunes Store itself does not show any DRM-Free music currently available for purchase. The DRM-Free launch will likely occur later this morning (Wed, May 30th)"
Seems like some will start showing up shortly. :) - attention, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10does this mean itunes "plus" songs that have been de-drmed through itunes will play in like linux and stuff?
- MacGeekPro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Excellent, maybe later today I can upgrade my 15 tracks that are from EMI. I sure hope some other labels hop on the ship soon.
- pirco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9You can do anything you want with it. But you will lose quality converting it to an mp3.
- bitemark, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I had no issues. Everything is iAOK.
- doctorfungi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The thing with DRM is, the people who actually upload the stuff onto BitTorrent etc. wouldn't even used cracked DRM files. They would rip the CD and then upload it. DRM is simply making things difficult for consumers and really doesn't do anything to stop music being shared online.
- FresnonserF, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management
- bitemark, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13This is huge. I too hope other labels see the light and offer the DRM free alternative.
I see the iPhone on the horizon. Full of DRM goodies! - MacBandit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I think once they release the DRM free tracks they will probably have a big banner on the store front page that will be hard to miss.
I highly doubt they will make it hard to find them. - hockey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They won't. Now that DRM is gone they'll start whining about the price or something else (look at comments above it's already started)
example:
"I don't care that DRM is gone. It's an extra 30 cents and a corporate rip-off. Screw the RIAA and their greedy corporate profit margins. If they come down in price I'll stop pirating"
Now that DRM is gone people who wish to pirate will just come up with another "justification" to keep pirating. - ShaunO, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8@gxcdesign (why can't we have real threading?)
September last year, I moved from the US to Ireland. to save time, space and money (freight/weight), I left my computers at home .. and brought all my data stuffed on a single harddrive. and my ipod, of course.
The place we moved into didn't have the internet, and we couldn't sign up with any providers because we won't be here for the length of a minimum 1yr contract.
Got hooked up with a PC, loaded up my music .. but could not authorise the machine without the internet. So I could play anything I'd aquired illegally, but not anything I'd actually paid for. What I had paid for was on my ipod, so I could play it from there .. but I couldn't sync it against my desktop, as it'd require wiping the existing tracks, so I wouldn't be able to play what I'd paid for at all.
6 months later, I caved and bought a laptop, so I could authorise on someone else's network. but for those 6 months, I couldn't play what I was entitled to .. only what I wasn't. Being treated like a criminal like this actually encouraged illegally-aquired tracks. Is that really what DRM aims to achieve ? - NicP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Thats because the tracks have not been released on iTMS yet
- BulkHedd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm all for this option but I don't think it's fair that they charge you 30% to upgrade an album that sells for the same price as before. I have some albums that I bought for $9.99 each, which are still $9.99 for DRM-free, but I have to pay $3.00 a piece to upgrade them. On the singles you pay .30, which means you end up paying $1.29, the same price as it is to buy it DRM-free right now.
- samiron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8are there any improvements in the software itself?
- iFox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Doesn't apple just rock ^.^
- tehJR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/iTunesPlusPage
- PerennialTears, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I don't think so. Apple's notes for the update were as follows: With iTunes 7.2, preview and purchase iTunes Plus music—new higher-quality, DRM-free music downloads from participating music labels.
