Can I be your girlfriend?
...oh wait, I'm a dude... - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love my Mac Mini that I bought.
- icespide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ooo man, with a student discount $679 for a mac mini 1.42ghz 80gb hard drive and a superdrive and 512mb of ram, THATS HOT
- benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the homepage it looks like in addition to the built in wireless extreme and trackpad, you also get the Sudden Motion Sensor protection for the hard drive.
- BugBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1of course. i just bought mine last Thursday. and now they have new ones. well the only difference on the
499 model is 512 instead of 256.
599 model also has 512 and no option for the superdrive, built-in bluetooth and airport, and modem is optional now
699 model same as the 599 except with the superdrive. - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1clubqus - the difference is FSB, memory expansion ability (# of DIMM slots), built-in video capability (mirroring vs dual-head), quality of keyboard, weight/volume, and display sizes. for a very small fee, the difference between a 12" iBook and 12" PowerBook is definitely worth it IMHO.
- dataflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Apple Store, which was down, is now back up with pricing and a little more tech specs
- Woody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My PowerBook is about to burst into flames it's so hot.
- crunkcrumpet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the 12" iBook had superdrives, then the powerbooks wouldn't sell as much..
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet. That's 3 more Mac Minis sold now for family members.
- farinhoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm still in love with my 12 inch powerbook. Altho, the iBooks are looking pretty sweet as well. I think I might buy my girlfriend one.
- bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Macs are overpriced, under softwared, ridiculously expensive to upgrade... all for what, a pretty OS? Please."
Oh please 'SilverRocket' I used to think that way until I got a G5. I also run Debian. Mac OSX blows Windows away. There is nothing I cannot do on the Mac I can with the PC. I've got Photoshop/FlashMX/DW....video editing...oh, and BTW, I have apps not available for PC's like Comic Life, Circus Ponies' Notebook ( great BTW ), Final Cut Pro.
Your statement shows ignorance. I've never met a OSX user regret going that route. Yet, as part of my business, I continually deal with users of Windows who need to rid their computers of crapware and the constant barrage of it. I now recommend Macs and several have done just that with complete satisfaction I might add. So, in the REAL world I inhabit, OSX shows superiority over Windows in every way. What you stated could have been from me a couple of years ago. Actually using Macs and OSX has me singing a different tune. - farinhoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fuelvolts:
Well, She bought me a 60 gig iPod when the new ones make out, so if you think you can top that, then maybe we could work something out... heh lol - hobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have an iBook 500MHz G3 and I was really hoping to replace it with the new iBooks ... until I saw the spec's. For F's sake Cupertino pull your head out of your collective a**es and look at the hardware offered by the competition.
The base iBook is $1249.00-CAD for 512MB-RAM/40GB/32MB-VRAM/Combo-Drive and a 12.1" screen. For $999.00-CAD I can get a 15.4" screen 512MB-RAM/60GB/Combo-Drive from Acer. While the Acer uses the crap integrated graphics processor most entry level Win/Tel systems do, its fine for Web, email, word processing; besides the pokey 32MB VRAM the iBook has is too limited for most current game titles. Yes Apple people do play games on their computers!
Also, to get a SuperDrive I have to purchase a 1.0 lb. heavier 14.1" iBook which has a screen the same resolution as the 12.1 (1024x768).
What Apple hasn't done, and should have with this iBook revision ... IMHO:
At least one model with a 15.2 or 15.4" screen;
Minimum 64MB VRAM across all models;
Stop disabling spread-screen/twin-view on the video chip set;
Make the SuperDrive (DVD-DL) available as a Customer To Order option on all models.
enough said. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm disappointed they didnt upgrade the video (still at radeon 9200). To me it looks like all they did with the minis was to make 512MB standard, and then made bluetooth and wireless standard on the high end models. No speed upgrades at all, just more features. Looks like I'll be waiting for the intel-based minis.
- dataflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can anyone do a comparison between the new ibook and minis and the former models? How much has changed with the new lineup?
http://blog.michaelkent.ca - icabod540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Clubgus I'm curious to see these sub 1200 dollar laptops that are either 12" or 14.1" in size and sport all of those things you said. Like more then 2 USB ports, a firewire 800, the useless pcmcia slot. I also think its funny how people think the i series from Apple is supposed to meet the needs of a power user. These computers are for people who get on their computers to check their email and chat a little bit. They don't need every possible option available because won't use them. The new iBook are a nice upgrade.
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obsolete G4s? Puh-leeze. Unless you're playing the latest 3D games a low end Mac Mini is more than enough for most consumers. If you do more than word processing, web browsing, download music, etc sure you need more but MOST people do not.
But yes, it would be nice to see faster options... and cooler! But that's not happening until the x86 models are available. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here's an uber mac mini http://www.themodwiki.org/index.php/Mac_Mini
just holding out on a 7200rpm 100GB drive from Seagate - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my pb, and the video out is what sold me on it. Oh yea, bashing Macs is fading away, they are great products and people are begining to see use them and love them. Yes they are more expensive but my pb and ibook before it were awesome, no windows issues...
- larriveejp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If $699 were $599 for the high-end mini this would be a lot more exciting. It's still better than the pricing they had before at any rate. At least you can get a usable mini for well under $1000 now.
- Harami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard there might be something about sites like overstock.com getting mac minis and ibooks. I'm looking to buy a mini for my dad who is constant complainer about Windows and PCs and doesn't need much power. Anyone know of any of these deals of the older machines hitting sites like overstock?
- washboard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have to admit, although there was no chance of seeing it, i was sort of hoping i might see something "Mac mini, now with Intel Pentium M"
Or at least something a little more interesting. Mac mini G5 perhaps.... - hiska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple needs to get realistic and at least start offering an above entry level pc video chipset capable of running core graphics with a bit more speed in the Mac mini.
The only innovation happing in Apple Computer lately is in their marketing team, It’s amazing how they can brain wash users to pay top dollar for obsolete G4 and low end graphics technology.
It’s time Apple Started Thinking Different and actually offered better deals with their G4 and G5 product range, especially with their 'rumored' declining system sales as Mac Fans and converts await the Mactel System’s. - leafsfanatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know if the hard drives in the new Mac mini got a speed boost? If I recall they were 4200RPM drives in the 1st generation ones.
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know where you can get some of the overstock minis?
I've got a hankering for a new development box and I needs me some textmate action! - benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No widescreen, guess the rumors were just that. They do get the scrolling trackpad though.
- clubgus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The iBooks still are technically the same, nothings really changed. Most Sub $1200 laptops these days have more than 2 USB ports, have an option for PCMCIA slot, may have Firewire 800 and may incorporate a 1Gb Networking, clearly the iBook is like no other Laptop out there and I start to wonder Why have Apple must have a iBook and a Powerbook? what is the Difference? And The Mac Mini Well lets just say My next Mac will be a 'G5', b4 intel come along nxt Yr every1 must experience the pwr of a G5 I'm gonna have to buy a iMac G5 17", Guyz Remember G5's clearly kick the Ass of G4's, so bring on the iMac!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like it might have gotten a minor speed bump and they added wireless and bluetooth as standard.
The store is down, so you can't compare available models yet. - HAKdragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"No widescreen, guess the rumors were just that. They do get the scrolling trackpad though."
Using iScroll2, I have this functionality on my 1Ghz iBook. It's a damn nice replacement for a scroll wheel. - clubgus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+018 months of course Moores Law, it seems like an eternity between ibook updates or any other Apple product update, that when the product comes out it seems new to Mac users but its been out for Yonks, Apple have are slow Time to market, when it comes to Computers could be many reasons Quality Testing but when it comes to new iPods releases Now they come out every 2 months. Is this a Sign of things to come 4 apple?
- disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreeing with DannoHung:
I heard a rumor that the overstock minis were going to overstock.com, does anyone know if this is true or not? - althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Did I mention I am a .net programmer and web develper? I mention that now before all the windows users start spouting about how I don't know what its like to use windows.
I have one question for nextsteposx... do you realize how little you know about actual system specs. Let me give you a clue, an emachine stating it has 64mb of VRAM is compareable to a mac running 8mb of VRAM. Video ram is in no way a good measurement of a videocards performance, its about the GPU. A geforce 6600 with 256mb of VRAM is outpeformed 2 to 1 by the geforce 6600 GT 128mb VRAM. Its documented and proven. - nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes if everyone where to stop buying MACS today, we would have Intel MACS tomorrow...
Either that or we would all watch the streaming Quicktime video of Steve Jobs funeral as he had a heart attack. - althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hiska you obviously don't know what the market has to offer, the only thing out there in the pc world at the same price point as the mini is a celeron based emachine with NO video card other than onboard crap and no wireless and even many of those emachines are running 256mb to start.
Apple is right on point with their pricing you just dont get the difference between what you get in a mac and what you get in a pc, I should know I see it all day long working at best buy 40 hours a week. The mac for what you get inside is extrememly affordable.
Btw, I convert at least one customer a day over to the mac from their original pc buying ideas. GO MAC! - icespide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to Inside Mac Radio yes the overstock mini's are going to overstock.com
- npacheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fyi, the mac mini already supports core image, just not the pixel-shading support. (ala it has to do it in the CPU so it's slow) therefore the "ripple effect" (Which I think is too annoying to be cool anymore) is not there. Want proof? Fire up Comic Life on a Mac Mini, runs fine. (It uses core image)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you try the os x BF2 port yet? its a little sketchy but nets me some decent FPS
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the 15 inch powerbook that is, not no damn ibook
- disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look about 5 comments up and you'll find the answer harami
- ScottBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those of you who are disappointed by this, I must ask you: What did you expect? I mean really...widescreen would have been nice, but it's unrealistic at this point. I predict that Apple will not change the current form factor of the iBook line until next year when they introduce models powered by Intel processors. It only makes sense.
As for the comments on the video card, yes, the mobile 9200 from ATI does suck, but it's perfect for iBook owners. Sure it doesn't work with Core Image technology found in Tiger, but iBooks are not marketed at gamers and graphic professionals who need that extra speed boost. If you want to play games on an Apple, get a PowerBook or a G5 (iMac even). The iBook is the perfect computer for most users who just need to do the basics. - clubgus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to Clear things from my Point of View
I am a current iBook Owner I like my iBook G4 it can play Unreal Torn 2003 Flawlessly, Edit Video and be able to watch Digitally Recorded DVB streams, I really don't need a Powerbook when a iBook is as powerful. Now My point is Apple have "Dumbed" down the iBook G4, They don't want the iBook to be as powerful as the Powerbook.
This Morning at my Apple Store i saw increase in the price of the iBook ($200 more) @ $2000 inc GST, now I can ramble of 10 or so laptops under $1500 that have the functionality of a Powerbook e.g. Compaq, Acer and TPG make em so cheap, My complaint is I am right hand person I need a Usb port on the right hand side of the laptop for my external mouse the ibook doesn't provide this, firewire 800 isn't new news but I reckon it be Excellent speed boost to in your ibook (hook up a external Fast HDD to the ibook) because the HDD in the iBook is still slow 4200RPM. Don't you worry any Latest G4/G5 Mac can play Latest Games cause all Macs have dedicated Video cards, whereas the PC Laptops have shared Video with the onboard Ram; Advantage Macs. But at least the inventors of Firewire could put Firewire 800 in the next line of Macs it would be sweet, if the ibook had a PCMCIA card slot it could be used to add a Firewire 800 card but that's not option for the iBook as Apple don't want the iBook to outrun the Powerbook (Dumbing down effect of the iBook), you know and I know they can do it but they don't want to make the iBook powerful because the effect on the Powerbook, the current speed boosts are minor and you will not notice much difference OS X need 1+ Gig of Ram to function flawlessly, so I think Apple need to look at these two Laptop lines and Decide their Future, Typically Powerbooks get the newest Technology first than the 1 year later the iBook gets the Newest Technology thats how I see it. - digit9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will be interesting to see how these things sell. What I am interested in is how many people will hold off on purchasing a Mac now and wait for the Intel macs to come out. I for one was ready to get a powermac but decided to wait until next year when the MacTels come out.
- icabod540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The iBooks don't have a ATI 9200 graphics card in them. It's a ATI 9550 just to clarify because of ScottBookG4's comment.
- icespide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quoted for truth
- icabod540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digit9 you do know that the powermac will be one of the last computers to move over to intel. They're going to start with the lower end computers and move up from there.
- das7282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn it! The search here sucks! I just (accidentally) duped this story! I did a search and it came up with nothing!
- joesoundbyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0clubgus: yes, and it stinks
- Winklepr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Typically Powerbooks get the newest Technology first than the 1 year later the iBook gets the Newest Technology thats how I see it."
clubgus, not to burst your bubble or anything but "1 year later" is quite a while in computer-time. So if "1 year later" the ibook gets the "Newest Technology" I wouldn't quite considor it the "newest" or even "new" technology by that point. Honestly, I don't even know if the technology found in the current powerbook line is the newest - its just apple saving some time before releasing updated powerbooks in september or what not. The technology and hardware found in these "updated" ibooks are certainly not "new" let alone the "newest". Maybe you could stretch and say the current hardware offerings in the powerbooks are "new" technology, but still not the newest. Newest is a term in the computer world that lasts a very very short while, but things can be new for a matter of months usually. But 1-year+, not so much... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i was gonna troll here comparing the mac and my dell, but i saw it was comparable so i wont troll.
