- yalskey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is it just me, or is the concept of a red (read: bloody) iPod to raise AIDS (a blood virus) awareness just a tad on the creepy side. I mean, why don't they release a flesh colored Mighty Mouse (with that little bump / scroll ball) to raise awareness of detecting breast cancer? Or an iPod with a rumble pack / vibration mechanism to raise awareness about Parkinson's Disease?

But the red ribbons used to support AIDS research don't bother you?
They obviously chose red because the AIDS research cause already chose red as their representative color. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Red iPod, AIDS, blah blah blah...
AIDS (cancer/other "terminal" diseases/etc) will never be cured because treating the disease is more profitable. - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Is it just me, or is the concept of a red (read: bloody) iPod to raise AIDS (a blood virus) awareness just a tad on the creepy side. That was sickly comical. And I don't mean in a funny way.
Think of all the yuppies who will love to buy a red ipod to show they care and show it off that they care.
I'd buy the black one and just make a donation instead of how tacky using AIDs to make yourself look good is. - skork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tad creepy, yes. But completely in line with their advertising using U2. They sold the "U2" iPod....and the U2 music video was their main advertisement for the iPod video. So, it doesn't surprise me that Apple's going to be doing something else in conjunction with Bono.
- ubiquitin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with the above, red is a creepy color for an AIDS-awareness project.
But while we're on the topic of Apple and music apps, have you seen how large the number of open source apps that let you handle music has grown?
http://darwinports.com/?q=music - muleking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple moves to intel and gets its first virus, hiv... nice.
- skillet2extreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I dont think a red iPod is anything special, Id buy one if it were for a good cause like that. just as long as it doesnt have these reported audio problems like the current ones apparently do. Either way, new color, could be cool. have to see first if it ACTUALLY happens.
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not creepy at all.
Red is the color, the ribbons have been around for awhile now and red makes sense for the ipods. Great idea from the apple people, this will go over very well. I was going to buy one this weekend but might wait to see what I think of the red ones. **Good Idea form Apple** - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$20 dollars says that There will be no red iPod.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0valentines iPod?
- the_mole1314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, sorry I was typing fast. :)

Your math is off... my iPod is full (20Gig, 4,570 songs). I have about 400 something CDs... at ten-fifteen dollars a pop (some are boxed sets) that works out to roughly $5,000 (very rough). Considering I have acumulated that over ten years (so like $500 a year or $40 a month), that doesn't seem that crazy. Bump it up a little and you could fill a 30 or 50 by the same logic. - bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kday-
"They work with services that you can download unlimited mp3's for a low monthly fee. Wait a second, they aren't 'hip' though. Enough with the iPod."
If you mean emusic, or an actual .mp3 site, the iPod supports mp3s as well as .aac. As to why the iPod trumps other players, there's a tremendous simplicity between the iPod and iTunes. The thing just works, and it looks cool. (Note: this is coming from someone who owns a 128 MB RCA Lyra w/ a 512 MB SD card in it....and who will be buying an iPod eventually.) And, because of it's market dominance, it has a clear lead in terms of video format over all the other miscellaneous media players.
Sure, the iPod is overpriced: it's from Apple! That said, I could never see myself paying more than an extra $10-20 for a special edition iPod....which means I'm not getting one. - kael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The red Ipod is a noble idea for a noble cause. Regarding all the comments to when will the Ipod era end, well that will be when the others learn to market as well as Ipod does. There are other services and products that are on par with Apple if not better, they are just not known as well. I think throughout the year Apple will be faced with more competitors which will be good for everyone as that forces people to improve their product in order to keep its following.

Any word on a Pepsi/iTunes promotion this year? - h0lyHandGrenade, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0There will be no read iPod. There will be another U2 iPod however. The iPod Shuffle is also going to be replaces by a 1gig Nano style model. The Nano will be getting a memory upgrade and will be able to play video via a new firmware update.
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My money's on replacing the iPod shuffle with an iPod sport.
- h0lyHandGrenade, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0CORRECTION--- "red"

>>I'd buy the black one and just make a donation instead of how tacky using AIDs to make yourself look good is.
There will be people who do that, and there will be people who make a conscious choice to buy a red iPod because they realize that it's a small way they can help AIDS research.
I think it's a good idea, but perhaps they could have made it a tad less blatant, like maybe having a small red ribbon logo engraved on the back. - shultzy055, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ummmm... where does this article say anything about a new ipod shuffle or accessories?
Am I missing something? - wael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what about the American Express RED card? no one's really paying any attention to it.
i think it's a great idea: it will raise awareness and money!

A lot of people don't need to totally fill up their player to be happy. I buy every song I hear and like, so that's about $5 a month. Is it better to pay $15 a month to get every song I want plus a million crap songs I hate? And then when I stop paying... I don't have any music.
I'm not opposed to subscriptions in theory, but in reality, the price is prohibitively high.
As for the Red iPod, I think it might happen, but it will be ugly and tacky, as ezkeil said. - KNon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Latter?"
I believe that's what it reads. - zenlunatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yay! More rumors!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0$5 says there will be no red iPod.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I can't wait!
Really tho, how many more years will this iPod hype go on. Unless you have $30,000, there is no way to legally fill your iPod with music. Creatives/Irivers may not be as pretty, but they are a hell of a lot more functional than the iPod. They work with services that you can download unlimited mp3's for a low monthly fee. Wait a second, they aren't 'hip' though. Enough with the iPod.
Oops, I sell Video iPods on Ebay. What I meant to say is long live the iPod! Everyone needs to dish out $300 and buy one!!!! If you want a good deal, contact me. I can put a brand new 30 GB iPod in your hands for well under $300!
