- MommaLu, on 07/26/2008, -3/+37Let's just hope it doesn't slow down the apps.
- B00Radley, on 07/26/2008, -2/+27Hope flash lite makes it!
- sirbeta, on 07/26/2008, -1/+16These patents only exist to stifle someone from adding this support themselves. It doesn't mean you'll ever see the support become a reality.
- Rekutyn, on 07/26/2008, -5/+16Dugg down for flash dev.
- hsinray, on 07/26/2008, -3/+13Even if they slow down a little bit... At least there's music in the background when window media plays and I can watch online streaming content as long as there's flash and a media player. Also some apps only work in flash.
- thelaxdude, on 07/26/2008, -1/+9Wait, didn't someone find the hooks in the old iPod for Windows media icons? Just because it is there does not mean it will ever be used...probably a 'just in case' they are forced too.
The lack of Flash support though, that one has never really made sense to me. - freshyill, on 07/26/2008, -1/+8Yeah, ***** them! I don't use their products, and that makes me angry at them!
***** Tide while we're at it! I use All, so that makes me angry at Tide! - Wailord, on 07/26/2008, -1/+7There's also a patent for a videoconferencing camera on the front of the iPhone. Just like someone else said, just because it's there doesn't mean it'll be utilized.
- freshyill, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6What the ***** are you talking about?
- santaliqueur, on 07/26/2008, -4/+9Stop looking for conspiracies. This is not uncommon.
- iericg, on 07/26/2008, -6/+11I agree with Apple's decision to not include Flash on the iPhone. Here are few reasons why
1.) Low Processing Power...
The iPhone can do some great things with Native Apps. However as most of have experience even the native apps are buggy. Imagine the Flash Player Runtime Engine running while having eight web pages and then recieving a phone call. I have an iMac G5 PPC with 2 Gigs of ram and Flash runs really really slow on my machine. Especially when using PaperVisions3D.
2.) The touch screen and zoom feature...
On the iPhone rely on HTML DIV's to nicely display column. Also the the browser is programed to increase the font size as you zoom in. This kind of functionality only works with the flexibility using good old fashion mark up language.
3.) Mouse Events...
Because of the Touch Screen UI the iPhone does not recognize most mouse events. It's true - try opening a Web App that uses Drag & Drop (it won't work :). The Flash Player would have disable certain events in order to properly work on the iPhone.
I am a huge fan of ActionScript and love the idea of not having to mess with html, js, php, and xml just to program a simple web app. With the actionscript you kill almost three birds with one stone.
Personally I think adobe should enhance the Flash IDE so developers had the option to export there projects into clean html, css, and js files. That way with a little bit of tweaking Flash Developers can get the best of both worlds. - inactive, on 07/26/2008, -2/+6Next we'll be whining for AIR
- gllopc, on 07/26/2008, -3/+7Because there are a lot of websites that don't use Quicktime.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 07/26/2008, -1/+5Nice copy/paste or find/replace job. Now get a life, please.
- SouthsideIrish, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5And do you think Steven P. Jobs didn't have his hand in everything Apple has done since he came back?
- zzz@tkz, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5Websites that need flash are *****. End of story.
I completely agree, I don't get why everyone wants Flash. I love my iPhone, but I mostly browse forums and check movie times on it, everything else is through native apps (by god the updated Facebook app is about 50x better than iphone.facebook.com, that was buggy as *****. m.facebook.com was better, but it was always really hard to not get redirected to iphone.facebook.com).
Flash would destroy the battery, hardcore, and would be hard as ***** to actually use. The only way I'd let it on my phone is if I could disable flash content (like PSP did), and a "tap to activate element" thing that would lock down everything but Flash (which would be required due to irericg's point about mouse gestures). - apersaud, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4I hope it is a full version of Flash, NOT Flash Lite (which is what they place on current handsets due to processing power).
- witcompe, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4Using big words does not always make you look smart. Sometime it makes you look like a douche.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5that would be awesome!
- incandescent, on 07/26/2008, -4/+6When was Apple ever interested in openness?
- shank2001, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Actually the iPhone battery life is no worse than any other 3G smartphone, in fact it is at the top. Where does this "bad battery life" come from? Oh yeah, people with Razrs. You can't compare them, people. They are not in the same league.
- G4LAXY, on 07/26/2008, -2/+4Old news? I mean I'm sorry but this is atleast 2-3 month old... ( I mean 2-3 since it was shown on MacRumors ) -- is there really a need in bringing up old stories?
- EvilKaz, on 07/26/2008, -2/+4How can flash slow apps down when they dont run in the background?
- chkdg8, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1*****! Who actually read all that?
- pyrates, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1I filed a bug to Apple about adding windows media streaming support to the iPhone so that radio stations who broadcast online that use windows media can be listened to. They said they were considering adding it to the iPhone.
- chroko, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Point conceded.
I am personally a generation behind (still on a Treo). But I have several friends and co-workers with iPhones - I have heard all of them complain about the battery life and the need to charge their phone *every* day. - EvilKaz, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1wow hostile because someone made a counter argument hmmm...
- Rekutyn, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2The underlying markup that Flash uses is open.
That's why Adobe was able to create Flash authoring applications long before the merger. - Kingoftherings, on 07/27/2008, -1/+2Software patents are so stupid.... sigh
- billjimbob, on 07/26/2008, -2/+3Watching Hulu and loads of porn websites on my iPhone? Yes, please!
- iericg, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1The Flash Player worked awesome when I first bought my computer. The IDE started getting a little buggy with Flash 8 but everything really went down hill after CS3.
It's clearly Adobe's fault. The flash player still works great on older & slower PC's. I'm guessing Adobe decided to invest more of their time with the Intel chip. They probably only added support for Mac's PPC strictly for marketing purposes. - shank2001, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Video codecs in general need to get under control as well. I am tired of trying to find the right codec for every single video that comes along. MPEG should be the standard video format on the internet. Just like JPEG and GIF and PNG are. ANYTHING but WMV please.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 07/26/2008, -2/+3I'd much rather see VLC or MPlayer on my iPhone.
- fanclerks, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2I think a Hulu app would be killer on the iPhone.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Stop breathing my precious AIR!!
- tomwhughes, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Not sure I agree with this.
Developers would still create native apps over flash apps because they would run at a much faster speed, could access more of the iphone's core features and wouldn't have to run through safari. - Radigg, on 07/26/2008, -2/+3I understand Flash but why windows media?
- iericg, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1I agree with zzz@tks about Flash only websites. As a web developer... the WWW is all about accessibility. Communicating to the masses... amateur's limit themselves.
However I will admit that FLV encoded video's are pretty sweet and easy to use. However sites like Yahoo & Google (YouTube) offer alternative downloads. Again it's the difference between the little boys and the professionals. - kibbledbits, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1No reason to include Windows Media Player. Microsoft has done little to push forward this format on any platform except Windows. As a Linux & Mac user I can testify to the lack of 1st party support from Microsoft on these two platforms.
- sonicEd, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1If you know a bit about patents you know that applicants put in everything they can think of that has anything to do with the invention in the description section. The idea is to be as broad as possible. If the patent is awarded these description sections have little weight. The Claims are where the action is.
- codemander, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1WTF. i was sold by my PPC being a "supercomputer" when i bought it. there go my plans of world domination. Go home boys.
/disappointment - KyleGoetz, on 07/26/2008, -4/+4You know, I generally do not complain about grammar on sites like Digg (I don't expect eloquence from people here, just entertainment and occasionally insightfulness), but the frigging blurb asks, "Is Flash and Windows Media coming to the Iphone3G?" Are you freaking kidding me? The submitter can't even bother to make subject and verb agree? RRAAAAGGEEEE
- Nothlit, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1I don't really care about Flash as a platform; I just want to be able to watch streaming Flash video on the go.
- myownminerva, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1wow that was entirely too long
- freshyill, on 07/26/2008, -2/+2Yeah, and they use Flash.
Seriously though, everybody's got to stop using proprietary formats on the web. What's wrong with a good old mpeg? - jediknight00719, on 07/26/2008, -3/+3I remember the Adobe CEO talking and he said there is some conflicting business ideas for putting flash on the iphone. Now with iphone's new apps, apple wants people to make things with their tools so it only works for the iphone. But if apple allowed flash apps to work on iphone, then more people will not want to make iphone apps but instead flash apps because flash apps can be used everywhere. Adobe's idea is to have flash on every mobile platform. Apple doesn't want that. They want to only have it on their phone. I think that is the biggest challenge that apple needs to bypass.
- CarzorStelatis, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1@freshyill:
You do know that mpeg is just as patent-encumbered as Windows Media or Quicktime? - Atomic1fire, on 07/26/2008, -2/+2but the overall software is not
once the open screen project is used and adobe decides to make flash OS then I think a competitor would not be needed - obsolite, on 07/26/2008, -1/+0WMV is one of the worst proprietary formats available. I would really like an honest answer as to why I could possibly want or even expect a Windows proprietary format on my iPhone. But I'll just get dugg down more instead of getting a response, I'm sure.
