- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Hey I'll recycle your old Macs for ya! Send 'em to me, boys!
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32What? You will take my old computer for free? How generous of you.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Only if you pay the shipping. And when you say old.. you'd better mean it.
- Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I got dibs on the powerbooks
- BeyondALL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13In Norway all electronic stores have to take all your electronic equipment in for recycling for free... Apple is obviously not from Norway :)
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Consider the fact that you've probably only got a computer to get rid of when you're getting a new computer, and the logic starts to become more clear...
However, if you're really in a pickle and need to ditch an old computer, you can always try eBay, and Goodwill is still accepting older computers. - markcrules, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Time for me to go 'dumpster diving' down the back of the apple store ;-)
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I'm going to give them my P4 running a pirated Mac OSx86
... teh pwned? - tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Many other computer companies do the same... But only if you purchase their product.
No computer company (No business at all) would do this for free, openly, for all to use. They would go out of business with a flood of PC's coming in from all over! And if a large corp were to ship a 10,000 computers to them, that would kill them in one swoop! - pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And they install the rootkit for free!
- mattdr488, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I couldn't stand to get rid of a working computer.
- Aztlan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18yes, but only if you buy $$$ a new mac
- msu2k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Nothing new. Dell does the same thing.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13He's right in a way, if a company really cared about the enviroment and was doing something like this out of the goodness of their hearts, they'd take your old computer whether you bought one from them or not. When they do something like this, it's a form of marketing, nothing else.
There's nothing really wrong with that, but let's not pretend Apple is doing it because they feel some sort of responsibility for making the earth a greener place. - fuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dell does it for both corporations AND individuals AND has done so for years.
- MoebiusStrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10that's not true. I got my computer recycled by dell, and I'm no corporation. Dell even says so here:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/dell_recycling?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs - nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Just like Dell
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16What's better?
Giving it to Apple so they can presumably "dispose" it...
_OR_
Sell it on eBay and make sure you can at least make the first payment when your credit card bill comes with the $2000+ charge you spent on a brand-new Mac with all those accessories the dumbass at the "genius bar" recommended?
Choices... - Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15dont be looking a gift horse in the mouth now
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Have they started selling old computers as antiques yet?
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"and if your old computer happens to be made by Apple, we'll recondition it and resell it for 8% below retail."
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Yeah, I was being sarcastic. I don't consider it generous at all. Old computers are fun, even if they are pre-pentium era, there is always something you can find for them to do.Maybe turn them into an alarm clock or media organizer. If nothing else, turn them into a work of art. What self respecting nerd turns his back on an old friend like that? At one time you probably loved it.
As for apple, they are using this recycle program for good publicity and to show how "green" they are. Somehow I don't think it is computer parts that is polluting the oceans and raising global temperatures. Old computer parts are not worthless, it is not like they are losing money on it. - gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6whats wrong with ebay and money? money tooooooo good for ya
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7So many people criticizing this, despite the fact that it's undoubtedly a step in the right direction and should be encouraged by all companies that create products with significant environmentally harmful materials. It's not like it's easy to dispose of computers properly, and it it's inconvenient, human nature is generally not to bother.
- gailwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6they've been doing this for a while. it's not anything recent.
You can also bring your old computer to the Apple Store for recycling if you buy a new one (mac/pc) or recycle your old mac('s) anytime (with or without the purchase of a new machine) for free. - antheo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Sony is doing better. They give you money when you bring your old computer and buy a new one.
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My Mac 68k is the most distinctive doorstop available (and it still works if I power it up...)
- pacificdave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7come on now. i know a lot of non-techies and lazies who would just rather throw their old comp in the dumpster than deal with trying to recycle it or give it away. so just having a choice for free, mail it from your front door step recycling is very kewl. there's nothing wrong with offering that option.
- irishguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They are required by law to do it here in Ireland, all electronics/white goods retailers are. I think its a pre emptive/marking thing as this will probably be an EU wide thing soon
- locu543, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've got plenty to get rid of. I've probably got 20 or 30 computers collecting dust. People keep giving them to me and of course I hardly ever turn down anything free. Too bad most of them are junk. Is it a 1 for 1 trade or I wonder if they'll take 20 of my machines in exchange for a purchase of one of theirs. hmmmm....
- diggahole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah but most of their products suck... either that or they won't release when they say they will :)
- andyd273, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"In Soviet Russia your computer recycles you!"
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9So, Apple users are too lazy to use Ebay and make so cash... interesting.
- randf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nice touch by apple to help via part of their current online store.
it is just not fashionable these days to say "good job" to anyone or anything trying to improve any process. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would you give your old system to apple? Why not use that computer as a test bed or even part out and sell on ebay? you make profit or gain knowledge.
- dusingaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2eh, the good thing about Apple computers is they are almost always worth money, usualy good money even after many years. so you gotta Ebay that ***** to help fund your upgrades.
- Diela, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After you get done hauling recycled materials around, sorting, processing and reshaping them into something else, the item is actually more costly in terms of environmental harm and dollar costs. When you chop up and heat old plastic, what do you think they're doing? They're using fuel and belching smoke into the air. UPS trucks hauling your old PC over to Apple? Using fossil fuels and polluting while they do it.
The only substance that is cheaper to recycle than it is to create new stock is aluminum. Period. Anything else is a waste of time and taxpayer resources. Maybe in another decade or two when we find more efficient means of transporting and processing stuff, recycling plastic will make sense, but for right now nope. So recycle your soda cans and feel good about it, but recycling anything else is a sham. - supergwiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Before you give them too much credit, The Apple Board of Directors have been resisting pressure from shareholders to widen their recycling program (read the recent 10-K distributed to shareholders, the Board recommended to vote against the motion). As others have mentioned, many computer/office retailers take back old equipment regardless of make and purchase history, a policy some shareholders would like the Apple stores to follow as well.
This would leave one to believe that their commitment to being "green" is merely a marketing ploy. - wyldtek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/22/its-earth-day-so-dont-just-toss-your-old-computer/
- drgnmstrnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I will provide a free disposal service of your old apple products. GIMMIE!
- SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I will also take your old mac, hit me up.
Render farm here I come! - Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice, shame it;s not outside of the USA as well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yet ANTOEHR story that makes it to the front page SOLELY due to it being Apple. This wis worse than the infamour "Apple Wants to Help You with Your College Education!" post talking about the whopping $20,000 of scholarships (ten $2000 schoalrships) that Apple was so generously giving out. Of course, Microsoft, Dell, etc. all have FAR better scholarships, just like they've been taking back old computers too.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Not even if it was a Mac 68k? I mean I love computers too, but honestly, what on earth are you going to do with a 68k?
- TinnCan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Becasue it's about Apple the media's current darling child?
- catalupus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe that from now on you are going to be charged a disposal tax when you BUY a new piece of electronic equipment, to pay for the cost of safe disposal at the end of its life. Companies are going to have to take the equipment back to dispose, by law. This is part of the RoHS/WEEE regulations being implemented in the EU and Japan. The USA doesn't want to do it, but will have a severe dent in its export market if it doesn''t tag along.
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Dont apple people save their old computers?
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should give you like 5% off if you give them a computer that isnt too old, maybe only 5 years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In your quest to try to repeat Penn and Teller almst verbatim, you forgot glass.
And of course, like Penn and Teller, you leave out things. You want to talk about hte UPS truck using respurces, but if you threw it away, the garbage truck would do the same.
Penn and Teller was not talking about large items like this. - steveodigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not entirely free. They already charge you an $8 recycling fee when you purchase a new MacBook Pro. If the old Mac is still functional, eBaying it would be better, since it benefits both you and the buyer. It's a waste to recycle a perfectly usable Mac. :)
