- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -23/+19hoepfully just the beginning...
- mattyice11, on 10/12/2007, -65/+123I can't wait to get movies that are too long for my iPod battery, too low-res to look good on my TV, are crippled with DRM, and cost nearly as much as DVDs.
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -52/+16Amen
- piecewise, on 10/12/2007, -33/+96The TV quality of these shows are great for an early technology. I watch Lost and The Office on my TV via my iPod all the time and it looks fantastic.
The DRM doesn't "cripple" the content. It just makes it harder for you to steal it or misuse the license. Them's the rules, and it's not just iTunes. That DRM is what makes those content companies confident in this new distribution model.
Cost as much as DVDs? How do you know that? The 1.5 hour movie on iTunes is $1.99. Do you buy your DVDs for $2.50? Furthermore, I bought Lost on iTunes for $29.99 - nearly half as much as the DVDs in the store.
Lastly, iPod battery life. I can watch a 2-hour movie on my iPod, especially if I'm going TV out. Playing only videos, my iPod tends to last just under 3 hours. Don't be a flamebait moron.
You might try knowing a few things before you speak. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -52/+7OOOOO FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
- tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -44/+11It is so cool to dig posts that bash on the iPod.
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29We can keep saying that DRM-crippled files "keep you honest," but it doesn't change the fact that it locks you into hardware and software choices.
It's even worse with video than with music -- at least we can be pretty sure Apple will have the best audio player for some time to come, but they never have had the best video player.
So you buy a spiff new widescreen Archos PMP, and you can't watch your legally-obtained Battlestar Galactica episodes. So you have to resort to Bittorrent.
Let's see, how did DRM keep you honest there? - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6What are u talking about the DRm isn't crippleing it makes it so u can't trade it with friends burn a real DVD of it or even transfer it to your HTPC to watch on your Tv with out an extra $400 worth less device. The fact that its extremely large MPEG-4 hurts it too. Divx not only better quality but on a 2 hour movie is 300 MB smaller.
- lydon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11My problem with the video on iTunes is that you can't (at least I can't, but I could be an idiot) get it onto my PSP, and that is exactly what Jobs wants. I want to obey the law here, I'm more than willing to pay $2.00 for an episode of The Office, I just don't want to have to have a Video iPod to watch it. I know that I can watch it on my computer, but that really defeats what I'm trying to do.
I just want a legal place to buy GOOD videos (of which I think iTunes has tons, The Office, etc.) that I can use on my PSP! Maybe I'm just out of luck, but even if I am, I'm still glad that I got a PSP instead of an iPod Video.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -52/+13OMG, i know this is dumb but i feel so awesome. Last night, around 1 am, I sent Mac Rumors the link. Now it's like, everywhere. :D
But yeah, I hope this is the start of something big. - ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -42/+25Wait, I'm sorry, but to be a "movie" you need to have a plot and some type of entertainment value. This is crap.
- bonchbonch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33You're just defining what constitutes a good movie in your mind. Your goofy "I'm too hip" mindset aside, many kids probably enjoy this film when it airs on Disney. I bet you liked crap like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and "The Mighty Ducks" when you were a kid too. Or were you always super-hip and enlightened from the start? I bow to your hipness.
- Walking.Dude, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Kids love it. Just because it doesn't fit your particular tastes doesn't make it "crap". I personally don't see appeal but it is entertaining to the pre-teen set.
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -15/+14Yes, 10 year olds with 5G iPods.
They probably have ponies in the back yard too. - xenoandroid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9The technical definition of a movie includes a cartoon frog dancing for 3 seconds. I can even squeeze it into your rather close minded definition of movie. Plot? You got it. At this point in the movie the frog's left leg is touching the ground, at a later point it's the right leg. Entertainment? Some little kid probably finds it mildly entertaining at the least.
What you stated is your opinion, but technically all it has to be to qualify as a movie is change images over the passage of time. This includes swapping between blank black and white screens in a seizure inducing manner.
As for '10 year olds with iPods', think, parents with 10 year olds connecting their iPod to the TV for them to watch.
Edit: I just dugg all comments above mine to promote discussion. It would be nice if people didn't abuse the system to drown out everything they don't agree with. - kevthecatslayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The soundtrack has been selling extremely well. So there are lots of people (kids) who like it.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this isn't REALLY a movie. it's a "made-for-tv movie." it's kinda in between a tv show and a movie (that one might see in the theater); but, hey, at least it's a step in the right direction.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -64/+11ITunes still sucks...
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4Even after 40 - diggs, it still sucks
- xavierh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can you please elighten us as to why Itunes suck.... the last time I check nobody was forcing anybody to use Itunes...
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wow i like how people just digg against you because they dont agree with your opinion.... I digged against you because you didn't really estabish an arguement... although I do agree with you.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@xavierh
Controversy - MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on! You Apple fan boys can do better than that!
ITunes, IPod and Apple all suck...
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -47/+5Thank you to everyone who is digging this story and NOT the one submitted as a blatent dupe by CLIFFosakaJAPAN that links to the exact same article.
- lico05, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22It's a start...hopefully good movies will be $2
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -19/+102 Dollars is a little low. I'd think they would be up around 10$.
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6nstern, I think 2 dollars makes sense when you consider the DRM and the quality. I'm not bashing on the DRM, I'm just saying you've got a movie that looks good on your ipod, and ok on your TV, but can only play when and where you have your ipod (or on your computer) When you consider you pay on 8 bucks (or more) to see a movie in a theatre, 2 bucks for a tiny, low quality, ipod only movie isn't insane.
but it does point out how overpriced the music videos are.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25Ehh...I could just use Videora to convert my DVDs and put them on my iPod
Hey...if I own a movie, why am I playing more money to buy it again?- SirVanderhoot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8We're not talking about movies that you own. If you like a movie enough to buy it, then buy it and use it however you see fit. This market is meant for movies that you would have rented, which is actually a better deal than blockbuster (ignoring the fact that you can just as easily rip those).
Personally, I'd end up using it for those movies that I wanted to see, but never ended up going to. It just fills another gap in the market, similar to what NetFlix is doing. There's plenty of movies out there that I wanted to see, but didn't care enough to invest 20 bucks for the increased quality and behind-the-scenes crap. I just want to see the movie, and be done with it. - xavierh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0who said that?

- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14anything $5 and under would be awesome, I'd buy some
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -27/+4"High School Musical" ? APPLE 0WNZ J00!!!
- jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10not really considered a true 'movie'.... they have offered full SNL "Best Of's..." for a couple months now, and those are like an hour and a half long...
- wsewell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Agreed. I'm sad to say that this is a non-event.
- wsewell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Agreed. I'm sad to say that this is a non-event.
- SpectoriS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13At last, we finally see something coming out of the Pixar/Disney deal. With Jobs holding such a prominent position at Disney, we *will* be seeing a lot more Disney 'classics' coming out on iTunes. Although I personally hated Bambi, its a start. Soon, after other companies begin to see the revenue Disney will be taking from iTunes, they will also try to strike deals with Apple to market their movies.
iTunes and movies were never meant to go together, so of course its gonna take off at a slow start. However, it *is* a start. - RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -22/+9Great news...for my 11 year old, who DOESN"T read Digg! Lame.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -21/+5"High School Musical is a 1hr, 39minute Disney Channel original TV movie that is now available on iTunes!!!"
OMG!!!!111 I have been waiting for YEARS for this movie to come out on iTunes!!!!!!!! YAYAAYAY!! - Blaze312, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6This reminds me of a question I am always asking myself.
If I own a copy of a VHS movie, am I aloud to download a copy from the internet? Technically i have already payed for the movie once right?- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Legally, the quick answer is no.
Whether or not you agree with that and decide to abide by it is a decision for you to make. - Sparklehorse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Agreed. The answer is no. I remember reading an article about this a while back but I cannot find it. If I remember correctly (which I do not guarantee that I do) it has something to do with the media and the provider you get it from. For example if you have an old 45 of Elvis that does not mean you can somehow get a free CD of the same song(s). Technically if you switch how you view movies, you can own one on VHS, Laser Disc, DVD, PSP and any other format that is out there. Hope that clears things up a bit.
- Blaze312, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2So when it says that your are aloud to make up to 3 copies for personal use of a movie or CD you have purchased, then this is only acceptable if they media you are burning it on is the same as the media that it originally came on?
Would this make recording a backup copy of a DVD to VHS illegal?
Or does this rule only pertain to upgraded media? - G00mper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Morally? Absolutely, in my opinion. Legally? I don't know, and none of the commenters that say yes have posted links to laws or court decisions.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You could capture said VHS onto your hard drive using one of those video capturing cards. And it all falls under Fair Use
- finite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That was the plan mp3.com once had, to give people mp3s of CDs they 'proved' they already owned... IIRC (and like the poster above I might be wrong) the lawsuit that brought them down wasn't taking issue with the concept itself but rather with their assurance that downloaders owned the CDs. I suspect that it _is_ technically legal for you to download something that you already own, but it is still illegal for the person on the other end to send it to you if they aren't certain that you really do "own" the right to have your copies.
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Legally, the quick answer is no.
- Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -21/+9Are you guys this excited over a B grade Disney movie? But it has Apple in the title so I shall leave you to your circle jerk.
- Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Cool. Although "High School Musical" is a rather inauspicious beginning.
- jdsundstrom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4While some may argue about the quality of "High School Musical", it is extremely popular with all of the "tweenies" in my neighborhood...especially the young girls. Additionally, the soundtrack to this little Disney TV-movie has been on the charts since the movie's debut in January.
Frankly, I don't care what the movie is or how low-res the video may be, it is a positive step in the right direction. - cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Say what you will about the quality of Disney's offerings, but they know their market very well - the 10-12-year-olds I have worked with were Disney nuts.
Also I have noticed music from High School Musical in the top 10 of iTunes for the past month at least...
Bottom line, Disney is a mean business and knows their market.

- vashavoc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Excited by B movies, nah. Rather in the fact this is being offered and more flims are sure to come. Very cool.
- neuros, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6long movies sure would look better on a bigger video ipod screen...
- THEMACGOD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8You gotta start somewhere.
- piecewise, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Absolutely. Remember TV content on iTunes? It started as being so limited, they didn't even give it a dynamic page. It was just five large buttons for five shows (three of which sucked). Now look at it.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9You'd have to be pretty desperate to watch a movie on an iPod because it's really not enjoyable. My PSP with a bigger screen was bad so the even smaller iPod screen must be even worse.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I watched a movie (Rush Hour) on my iPod and it was perfectly fine. You just can't expect to watch it at 30 feet away.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3probably a taste for more to come...
- damonic, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10This is considered a TV show. NOT a "movie." When they add the Movie category to iTunes, it will be more newsworthy. No digg.
- launchpadtt, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I agree. I think TV movies count more as tv shows, not movies. especially disney tv movies.
- mykoleary, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9It's a made for TV MOVIE. Just becasue it went straight to TV doesn't make it any less of a movie than say American Pie 4 which went straight to DVD.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its runtime is longer than 1 hour, coming in at 90 minutes. It demonstrates that iTunes is clearly capable of serving up feature movie-length content. That's what makes this video significant.
- Walking.Dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iTunes just listed this under music videos, but I'm getting an error saying it's not available in the US. Imagine, a 90 minute music video.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Has anyone actually bought this movie? I hope Apple has movies that are in the box offices, Apple would make a lot of money and it would give us geeks another reason not to leave the house. Tee hee.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5I would _almost_ consider buying a movie off itunes for $1. And not an old movie w/ low resolution. Only new releases. With near-DVD quality. Otherwise I'll just use other less-expensive means to get it...
$1 is a double cheeseburger man. And i love my double cheeseburgers.- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of my arguments for my choice to spend money on iTunes. Whenever I I tell my friends that I pay $0.99 for a song, they think I'm an Apple sucker and a deep pocket. Yet, I see them all the time wasting money on silly things. And funny you mention your little habit...
How long does a cheeseburger last for you? 5 minutes? 10 minutes if you talk while you eat? hmm? (and I gotta say, where are you finding such cheap burgers!?)
How long does a song last me that I'll cherish for many years? Some of the music I've bought I CANNOT live without, and I'm amazed it has had such an effect on me... and it only cost $0.99. Some of the friends who laugh at me for buying music are the same people that down a can of 7 UP in less than a minute.
So a minute of thirst-quenching that'll quickly pass, or a lifetime of a song that'll move me? People's choice.
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of my arguments for my choice to spend money on iTunes. - Judman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18FYI for those complaning on the first movie, there are a few simple explanations on why it is on here and why its the first.
1. Pixar/Disney deal. Thats a no brainer.
2. Highschool Musical was the top telecast in Disney history.
3. High school musical was number one in iTunes (the Soundtrack) for about 3 weeks and remained in the top in for a good 2-3. It now lingers in the 10-20 spot.
4. Steve Jobs believes that an adult will watch a movie once or twice, but a child will watch their favorite movie dozens of times.
I am sure however the next movies we will see are some pixar flicks.- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Was it really #1 for 3 weeks? WOW! When it came on TV i had to switch it off or my eyes would burn
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"4. Steve Jobs believes that an adult will watch a movie once or twice, but a child will watch their favorite movie dozens of times."
Can we have an option for me which is combination of adult watching action films over and over again?
- JRMillion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5In reality, we all should know they will be charging at least $8-10 for a good movie. And that is not unreasonable... but what is unreasonable is the lousy quality. Until iTunes offers different quality levels, hopefully with HD as the top choice... I will continue to get my TV shows from BitTorrent. And, Since I pay $150 a month for cable anyway, I don't see downloading a copy of the show as stealing.
- jallen7usa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree, the poor quality is what is holding me back. I look forward to the day they start releasing shows (and movies) in an HD format. That plus a mac mini w/ Front Row will quickly replace my cable box ($100/mo bill).
- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Here's the million dollar question.
Is the format better than the format used for the 5G iPod? Or is it the same?
If it is the same, then no new video iPod on April 1st. If it is better, then maybe that is the target resolution for a new video iPod? - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7"$1 is a double cheeseburger man. And i love my double cheeseburgers."
The big story is the $1 double cheeseburger. They're like $2.50 in NJ. - dusingaz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Cost is $1.99 not the cost of a DVD (yet)
- kevthecatslayer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1but with dvd you usually get bonus content, commentary, deleted scenes.
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -26/+20Every time Steve Jobs blows his nose it ends up on Digg. If you care about iPod and iTunes that much, make your own site and update it. I'm tired of day after day, countless front story postings of iTunes offers music, iTunes offers video, iTunes now offers TV shows (video AFAIK), iTunes now offers TV show-related shows (video AFAIK), iTunes now offers movies (video AFAIK).
I've had the same functionality with my cell phone (nokia 6230) for the past two years. Why is this new, exciting, and always on the front page? Welcome to the 21st century.
May the burying ensue.- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -26/+3Bury HIM!!!!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- spyyder, on 10/12/2007, -19/+14Yup, ITunes sucks. I am not sure why people are getting in line to suck steve jobs *****. Must be an apple thing.
/Burried because its true - usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8I agree with moonlite
digg.com is getting useless. You try to post something good and it gets kicked to the curb but if it has to do with apple it always makes it to the front page. - killerklown, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5mooninite you hit it on the nose
youve got my vote
tired of this apple nonsense - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The iPod/Itunes are, by far, the most popular online media stores. Millions of people use it. You act surprised that people care about a very, very popular service just because you don't personally use it
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The biggest news here to me is that it looks like the resoultion is double that of the TV shows. Not totally sure, but the preview appears to be much larger.
- birch25, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3i'm guessing two formats of video when they are on sale...
480p for $9.99
and
native resolution of new ipod for $4.99
there's no way they will always be $1.99. - mrfx, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10hopefully apple will go out of business.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3The bad thing is the Res isn't enough to watch a movie on a Notebook comfortably(IMP) .. It would be Great if you could pay a dollar for Full/Almost Full Res and the normal price for the normal "iPod" res... As for the "Movie" choice, Did you forget that Steve Jobs & Disney are the same person?.. But offering TV-Movies for $2-$5 is a cool idea. And MOVIES $8-$10.
- Blaze312, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4This is me testing a digg bug..
Please Ignore
Bury away! - bluemax, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1What format are these movies encoded in? Are they playable using a typical media player on a PC?
- bluemax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I found the answer to my own question. For anyone else wondering, iTunes videos are in MPEG-4 or H.264 format.
- JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Hmm
http://www.apple.com/movies - jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2hell, i've watched podcasts longer than that
- enforce1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yes, yes, moviechoice. It was probably one that Steve said "What can we put up that won't cost a lot to license?"
If you ask me, there is a different cool thing on the horizon. The RIAA has their heads up their asses. But who's to say that this isn't the start of variable pricing for movies? I'm just saying, not everything has to be a set price.
And to the people that are tired of hearing about Steve Jobs: He's the closest thing the tech industry has to a rock star. Your phone may be able to do all of those things, but millions of people don't have your phone. Millions of people use an ipod, in some variation. I can't stomache prices for 5G ipods, because I can't see when I'd need to watch video away from my laptop. But that doesn't mean that its inherently BAD. Apple is pushing the industry forward, whether you like it or not. Sounds like you're a windows user (Most apple people, if i can make a generalization, enjoy apple news). When the boys in Redmond catch up with the people iin Cupertino, I'll stand up and take notice. Just cause its different doesn't mean its wrong.
Think Different. And all that.
And here's hoping for 49 cent or 69 cent songs!!- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6My phone costs about $50 now. What's stopping you? You *really* want to give Jobs a Blow for $400 for a new iPod?
It plays MP3, it plays H.264, it has playlists, it has a camera. The *only* thing bad about it is the screen size, but it's a phone after all.
P.S. Digg has a new comment system.
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6My phone costs about $50 now. What's stopping you? You *really* want to give Jobs a Blow for $400 for a new iPod?
- Walking.Dude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Right now this is buried on iTunes. No banner ad or even a link from the Disney Channel page. There could be more lurking out there.
- Judman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3My thoughts exactly. I am thinking they are still rolling out all this stuff. The Highschool Musical Banner is on the Mini-store when you are on a video, thats it. Almost everything is unlisted, so I am sure if someone starts guessing urls, they will pop into something interesting.
- LordJezo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I sure hope this is the first step towards a Netflix online thingy that will one day make every movie available for easy purchase.
Just imagine a site with a collection the size of Netflix and instant delivery. I would cream over that. No 2 day wait for movies, no waiting for movies with high demand, just everything all the time at the speed of the pipes.
Can't wait. Hopefully before I die it will happen. - l3e3e7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Ipods are really becoming a hit with the sixth graders that I teach, and when I mentioned this to my class there was a huge cheer. I think this was a brilliant way to grab this demographic. Now the lot of them are dreaming about full ipods instead of just the nano.
It was as if grade school parents everywhere cried out all at once and then emptied their wallets. - chiizu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6I'm tired of these retarded comments.
- tdogzthmn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This is the first step towards what I believe will drastically change how the movie industry works!
- mikejonas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Awww...it's gone. And I was so looking forward to singing along... :)
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Since this was a made for TV movie which i have recorded onto my computer already i wouldn't consider this anything big. If this is considered a movie so is the Conan movie specials that were also released on DVD. Except those nevere aired on TV first making them closer to a movie than this. A TV show not a movie, no big deal, imo.

- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Most of the complaining doesn't merit the time it took to type it. For instance, look at it this way. Chappelle's "For What it's Worth" went on iTunes, for $1.99. This is available on DVD for $19.95... I think I saw it for $12.99 on discount. Chappelle has been the #1 video download on iTunes, and runs around 57 minutes. The comments on iTunes have people flipping over the great download and great price.
For people that want video on their PSP... sorry, your device is made by a company that's not securing the right "Connections". It's not a bad thing, its just the way it is. Before I picked up the Creative Zen, I'd check out what I can put on it. Sadly, I got a Sony Mini Disc before iPod's wer released, and I had to immediately lose my investment and make a new purchase. iPods with iTunes were a much much better product than Sony had.
So much p*envy going on because Apple has created a great winning ecosystem. I hear Sony is still having cross department software conflicts with its offerings. It's really a matter of just creating a great product. - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"I'm tired of these retarded comments."
I'm tired of lame emo haircuts. Maybe we should both cry about it. -
