- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -33/+96The TV quality of these shows are great for an early technology. I watch Lost and The Office on my TV via my iPod all the time and it looks fantastic.
The DRM doesn't "cripple" the content. It just makes it harder for you to steal it or misuse the license. Them's the rules, and it's not just iTunes. That DRM is what makes those content companies confident in this new distribution model.
Cost as much as DVDs? How do you know that? The 1.5 hour movie on iTunes is $1.99. Do you buy your DVDs for $2.50? Furthermore, I bought Lost on iTunes for $29.99 - nearly half as much as the DVDs in the store.
Lastly, iPod battery life. I can watch a 2-hour movie on my iPod, especially if I'm going TV out. Playing only videos, my iPod tends to last just under 3 hours. Don't be a flamebait moron.
You might try knowing a few things before you speak. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -65/+123I can't wait to get movies that are too long for my iPod battery, too low-res to look good on my TV, are crippled with DRM, and cost nearly as much as DVDs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33You're just defining what constitutes a good movie in your mind. Your goofy "I'm too hip" mindset aside, many kids probably enjoy this film when it airs on Disney. I bet you liked crap like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and "The Mighty Ducks" when you were a kid too. Or were you always super-hip and enlightened from the start? I bow to your hipness.
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29We can keep saying that DRM-crippled files "keep you honest," but it doesn't change the fact that it locks you into hardware and software choices.
It's even worse with video than with music -- at least we can be pretty sure Apple will have the best audio player for some time to come, but they never have had the best video player.
So you buy a spiff new widescreen Archos PMP, and you can't watch your legally-obtained Battlestar Galactica episodes. So you have to resort to Bittorrent.
Let's see, how did DRM keep you honest there? - lico05, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22It's a start...hopefully good movies will be $2
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25Ehh...I could just use Videora to convert my DVDs and put them on my iPod
Hey...if I own a movie, why am I playing more money to buy it again? - Judman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18FYI for those complaning on the first movie, there are a few simple explanations on why it is on here and why its the first.
1. Pixar/Disney deal. Thats a no brainer.
2. Highschool Musical was the top telecast in Disney history.
3. High school musical was number one in iTunes (the Soundtrack) for about 3 weeks and remained in the top in for a good 2-3. It now lingers in the 10-20 spot.
4. Steve Jobs believes that an adult will watch a movie once or twice, but a child will watch their favorite movie dozens of times.
I am sure however the next movies we will see are some pixar flicks. - SpectoriS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13At last, we finally see something coming out of the Pixar/Disney deal. With Jobs holding such a prominent position at Disney, we *will* be seeing a lot more Disney 'classics' coming out on iTunes. Although I personally hated Bambi, its a start. Soon, after other companies begin to see the revenue Disney will be taking from iTunes, they will also try to strike deals with Apple to market their movies.
iTunes and movies were never meant to go together, so of course its gonna take off at a slow start. However, it *is* a start. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The iPod/Itunes are, by far, the most popular online media stores. Millions of people use it. You act surprised that people care about a very, very popular service just because you don't personally use it
- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14anything $5 and under would be awesome, I'd buy some
- lydon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11My problem with the video on iTunes is that you can't (at least I can't, but I could be an idiot) get it onto my PSP, and that is exactly what Jobs wants. I want to obey the law here, I'm more than willing to pay $2.00 for an episode of The Office, I just don't want to have to have a Video iPod to watch it. I know that I can watch it on my computer, but that really defeats what I'm trying to do.
I just want a legal place to buy GOOD videos (of which I think iTunes has tons, The Office, etc.) that I can use on my PSP! Maybe I'm just out of luck, but even if I am, I'm still glad that I got a PSP instead of an iPod Video. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its runtime is longer than 1 hour, coming in at 90 minutes. It demonstrates that iTunes is clearly capable of serving up feature movie-length content. That's what makes this video significant.
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Legally, the quick answer is no.
Whether or not you agree with that and decide to abide by it is a decision for you to make. - Walking.Dude, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Kids love it. Just because it doesn't fit your particular tastes doesn't make it "crap". I personally don't see appeal but it is entertaining to the pre-teen set.
- jsmiley17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Actually, High School Musical attracted the highest number of TV watchers in Disney Channel history. Which, may not mean a lot to 95% of those iPod consumers, but tons of kids own iPods that probably watched the musical.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9The technical definition of a movie includes a cartoon frog dancing for 3 seconds. I can even squeeze it into your rather close minded definition of movie. Plot? You got it. At this point in the movie the frog's left leg is touching the ground, at a later point it's the right leg. Entertainment? Some little kid probably finds it mildly entertaining at the least.
What you stated is your opinion, but technically all it has to be to qualify as a movie is change images over the passage of time. This includes swapping between blank black and white screens in a seizure inducing manner.
As for '10 year olds with iPods', think, parents with 10 year olds connecting their iPod to the TV for them to watch.
Edit: I just dugg all comments above mine to promote discussion. It would be nice if people didn't abuse the system to drown out everything they don't agree with. - mykoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought it and the download completed.
1) It took about 1 - 1.5 hours to download, so I presume with enough of a leading buffer, it could be conceivably "streamed".
2) The default resolution is the same size as the Dora video I bought for my daughter.
3) It appeared in the movies section of Front Row
4) Using Front Row, the words/credits were pixelated and the picture itself seemed slightly out of focus. Haven't had the chance to hook my laptop up to the plasma, so this is in relation to viewing on a 12" Powerbook.
This is NOT a high quality version IMHO. I guess for $1.99 you can't complain too much, but if this is the future, I'm not buying with the expectation of seeing things on anything but a mobile device of some sort. - THEMACGOD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8You gotta start somewhere.
- Shawn1141, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If they come out with a better quality version for the new rumored ipod this wil be a great idea. Even if they up the price to 5.99, that's about as much as it costs to rent a movie. Why not just download it and watch it on your ipod or comp?
- SirVanderhoot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8We're not talking about movies that you own. If you like a movie enough to buy it, then buy it and use it however you see fit. This market is meant for movies that you would have rented, which is actually a better deal than blockbuster (ignoring the fact that you can just as easily rip those).
Personally, I'd end up using it for those movies that I wanted to see, but never ended up going to. It just fills another gap in the market, similar to what NetFlix is doing. There's plenty of movies out there that I wanted to see, but didn't care enough to invest 20 bucks for the increased quality and behind-the-scenes crap. I just want to see the movie, and be done with it. - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6My phone costs about $50 now. What's stopping you? You *really* want to give Jobs a Blow for $400 for a new iPod?
It plays MP3, it plays H.264, it has playlists, it has a camera. The *only* thing bad about it is the screen size, but it's a phone after all.
P.S. Digg has a new comment system. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this isn't REALLY a movie. it's a "made-for-tv movie." it's kinda in between a tv show and a movie (that one might see in the theater); but, hey, at least it's a step in the right direction.
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6nstern, I think 2 dollars makes sense when you consider the DRM and the quality. I'm not bashing on the DRM, I'm just saying you've got a movie that looks good on your ipod, and ok on your TV, but can only play when and where you have your ipod (or on your computer) When you consider you pay on 8 bucks (or more) to see a movie in a theatre, 2 bucks for a tiny, low quality, ipod only movie isn't insane.
but it does point out how overpriced the music videos are. - mykoleary, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9It's a made for TV MOVIE. Just becasue it went straight to TV doesn't make it any less of a movie than say American Pie 4 which went straight to DVD.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on! You Apple fan boys can do better than that!
ITunes, IPod and Apple all suck... - AdverseEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you look past the poor quality, the fundamental idea is really a progressive and positive one. The good part is that inevitably someone (maybe even Apple) will learn from iTunes' mistakes and come out with an even better service.
- alxdman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mine works fine, even after the update.
- JRMillion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5In reality, we all should know they will be charging at least $8-10 for a good movie. And that is not unreasonable... but what is unreasonable is the lousy quality. Until iTunes offers different quality levels, hopefully with HD as the top choice... I will continue to get my TV shows from BitTorrent. And, Since I pay $150 a month for cable anyway, I don't see downloading a copy of the show as stealing.
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is coming from a 43-year old man so bear with me. I enjoyed HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL very much, but then again I have always been a big fan of DEGRASSI and MTV REAL WORLD/ROAD RULES shows. After catching all the HSM soundtrack downloads on iTunes, I decided to check out the movie on the Disney Channel. While it isn't spectacular, I can truly understand the appeal. The leads are two attractive kids and they can both sing amazingly well. Everyone wants them to be something else but they share a common interest in one area and it brings them together.
I have heard others mention this on the net and have to agree... HSM is quickly turning into this generation's GREASE. They are already planning a sequel. Watching the highly attractive Vanessa Hudgens belt out her tunes is well worth the download alone! - alxdman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats all nice and dandy, but what about us who are outside the US, we're not even getting tv shows!! I'd like to see the other ITMS get tv shows before a movie store comes out
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wow i like how people just digg against you because they dont agree with your opinion.... I digged against you because you didn't really estabish an arguement... although I do agree with you.
- cheez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like apple leaked something and is pulling it back, says "The item you tried to buy is no longer available."
- petiejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's probably because they screwed up the price- it's now available for $10 instead of $2.
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of my arguments for my choice to spend money on iTunes. Whenever I I tell my friends that I pay $0.99 for a song, they think I'm an Apple sucker and a deep pocket. Yet, I see them all the time wasting money on silly things. And funny you mention your little habit...
How long does a cheeseburger last for you? 5 minutes? 10 minutes if you talk while you eat? hmm? (and I gotta say, where are you finding such cheap burgers!?)
How long does a song last me that I'll cherish for many years? Some of the music I've bought I CANNOT live without, and I'm amazed it has had such an effect on me... and it only cost $0.99. Some of the friends who laugh at me for buying music are the same people that down a can of 7 UP in less than a minute.
So a minute of thirst-quenching that'll quickly pass, or a lifetime of a song that'll move me? People's choice. - MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@xavierh
Controversy - jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10not really considered a true 'movie'.... they have offered full SNL "Best Of's..." for a couple months now, and those are like an hour and a half long...
- Walking.Dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iTunes just listed this under music videos, but I'm getting an error saying it's not available in the US. Imagine, a 90 minute music video.
- hope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+210 bucks? no way.
- xavierh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can you please elighten us as to why Itunes suck.... the last time I check nobody was forcing anybody to use Itunes...
- NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that's stupid how people automatically bury people who say there opinion that is negative. I mean come on the real people we should bury is the ones that cant word or spell ***** right. I mean there is a button for spell check thing on this comment are you that stupid. Besides that, it's a nice start, iTunes is the biggest media store online that's why it comes up alot. But, it's already been done alot and failed alot, so I'd like to see if this is successful or not. But, this isn't the opening of the movie store so I guess the first titles should be better ones. But I'm an Apple, iPod, and iTunes lover. I mean I still use Windows stuff and other stuff almost the same as I use my iPod and iTunes but my use of apple products is at an all-time high. But eitherway, 2 dollars sounds good you think they won't make money but since it can only go on iPods and transfered to 5 comps and most people wont be transferring 500 meg video so just think 1 million people buying 2 dollar worth videos. You do the math. . . but ya that movie sucked, I had to watch it with my 6 year old cousin he slept during it so that's how much it sucks to him and to me. Except that one blonde chico in there is pretty hot. For a Disney movie, they exposed a lil' too much on some of the parts not like in some of the rap video but a good amount thats not good for children viewing this movie.
- jallen7usa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree, the poor quality is what is holding me back. I look forward to the day they start releasing shows (and movies) in an HD format. That plus a mac mini w/ Front Row will quickly replace my cable box ($100/mo bill).
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4only girls watch them.
- NoSuccess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes I think it automatically resumes or I know you can manually resume the dl.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This may be irrelevant... but a Disney TV movie can barely be called a full feature length film, Big company's wont buy into it because filmreals are expensive and they get the majority of there revenue form theater's, film connoisseurs will want the quality they pine for from DVDs/ the upcoming generations of DVDs. I also cant see why anyone would stare down at a tiny 2 inch screen for 1-3 hours, i mean, if so, they can just watch it on a television or computer they bought it on. In other words, i guess ill have more people to laugh at than just psp owners like myself who have there necks bent downward eyes gazing at the small screen.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2wow that movie was terrible..... there was no plot really.. and the end didnt make sence... all i got was this:
people fighing over who should get the lead in the musical, they try out, everyone is friends......
WOWZERS thats better than porn! - Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You could capture said VHS onto your hard drive using one of those video capturing cards. And it all falls under Fair Use
- wsewell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Agreed. I'm sad to say that this is a non-event.
- l3e3e7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Ipods are really becoming a hit with the sixth graders that I teach, and when I mentioned this to my class there was a huge cheer. I think this was a brilliant way to grab this demographic. Now the lot of them are dreaming about full ipods instead of just the nano.
It was as if grade school parents everywhere cried out all at once and then emptied their wallets. - LordJezo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I sure hope this is the first step towards a Netflix online thingy that will one day make every movie available for easy purchase.
Just imagine a site with a collection the size of Netflix and instant delivery. I would cream over that. No 2 day wait for movies, no waiting for movies with high demand, just everything all the time at the speed of the pipes.
Can't wait. Hopefully before I die it will happen. - jdsundstrom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4While some may argue about the quality of "High School Musical", it is extremely popular with all of the "tweenies" in my neighborhood...especially the young girls. Additionally, the soundtrack to this little Disney TV-movie has been on the charts since the movie's debut in January.
Frankly, I don't care what the movie is or how low-res the video may be, it is a positive step in the right direction. -
