    Older iPhone pictures had 9:41 AM, so maybe it's versioning not to spoil secret features by mistake.

    I think it's based from the announcement time.

    Notice the clock on the mac? The 9:42 thing has been going for awhile. Most alarm clocks for sale say 11:08 or 12:08 too.
