- KSUdesigner, on 09/14/2008, -4/+37Dear Steve,
Thanks for allowing Macs to boot into Windows. Your market share may be growing, but I'm still selling my OS to the same people that buy your machines.
Best wishes,
Bill - GliTCH82, on 09/14/2008, -7/+36Actually, it wasn't that I found Vista lacking that got me to buy a MacBook, but rather that I found Leopard to be nice. Mac OS has matured in recent years.
- clownfart, on 09/14/2008, -17/+46Too bad prebuilts suck.
- rawheadrex, on 09/14/2008, -4/+26The funny thing about business is, the biggest manufacturer doesn't necessarily generate the biggest profits. Just look at GM.
I think Apple is doing fine where they're at; clearly, gaining market share is good, but I think there will be a relatively clearly defined threshold figure somewhere between 10%-15% market share, where their growth will stop. The rest of the people just won't be willing to spend the little extra somethin' somethin' to pick up a Mac. But it's OK, as long as the market share is one that software vendors cannot ignore, what's more important for Apple and its customers is that they continue to make profits. And they have been doing that successfully for quite some time now. - Wade, on 09/14/2008, -0/+20So when Mac is talking to PC, he is talking to himself?
- icStatic, on 09/14/2008, -30/+46Dear Bill,
I'm writing to thank you for releasing Vista before it was ready like we discussed earlier. Apple is now registering record sales and although our comic TV ads may have helped, I think you releasing Vista early was the major contributor, so a big thankyou!
Best wishes,
Steve - coreychauk, on 09/14/2008, -4/+19Apple makes PC's?
- norman619, on 09/14/2008, -3/+17The title is inaccurate. Apple doesn't even rank in the World market according to the charts. They are 6th in the US PC vendor market NOT the world.
According to the charts in the article here are the top 5 PC vendors in the world:
1. HP
2. Dell
3. Acer
4. Lenovo
5. Toshiba - dechah, on 09/14/2008, -3/+17Now that Windows can run on the Mac natively, and there are great utilities like parallels and bootcamp, a greater market share of Apple hardware does not necessarily equate to a shrinkage of MSFT's revenues from Windows. In fact MSFT's revenues from Windows in the past several quarters of results have been at all time highs, despite the phenomenal growth in Apple's portable computer market share.
As Steve Jobs himself said, Apple and its fanbois need to get away from the idea that for Apple to win, MSFT has to fail. - sfacets, on 09/14/2008, -3/+17There is no such thing as a high end Dell laptop.
- chillypacman, on 09/14/2008, -1/+13I dunno about in the US but here in Australia Apple frequently charges 2x that of its competitors, it provides student discounts that can cut as much as $200 from the price but even with the discount DELL has a laptop that matches it spec for spec and even exceeds it for half the price (and the crazy thing is I'm being absolutely serious).
Oh and their monitors are something else entirely, I bought a 22" LCD monitor for $210 from an online store, 1680x1050 resolution with 5ms response, built in speakers (but worthless so I'll pass on that) and 3 years warranty... apples cheapest is a 20" lcd, 16ms response, no warranty to speak of, comes in at, I kid you not, $800: http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9177X/A?fnode=M ...
Granted the monitor I got was at a bargain price, dell stocks the same monitor I bought for about $400 with 2 years warranty....
....so at best you're paying 2x for a considerably inferior product... - markwilcox, on 09/14/2008, -7/+19you realise the top five all install windows by default.
- GordonFree, on 09/14/2008, -5/+17Still 6th? With all this fuss I thought they were 3rd or something...
They're a constant disappointment. after years and years they announce proudly that their market share is now... 6%. yey.
Losers.
PS: and I own apple products! If I didn't they would be doing even worse. - scarwars, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9you do know that Toyota is the most reliable car manufacturer in the world right?
- umbrellainabin, on 09/14/2008, -4/+11ftw
- championchap, on 09/14/2008, -7/+13As somebody who just bought a Dell laptop for the spec/price reasons i can tell you right now that the spec isn't everything.
Example, my girlfriends macbook is about a year old now, her webcam is a LOT better than mine.
Speakers and Mic are wiping the floor with mine too, but my laptops spec is much higher.
With a Mac you arent just paying for the hadware and the software inside, but also the quality of the setup. I get that now.. but i still think it isnt the time to buy one just yet.. not till the refresh. - bgberger, on 09/14/2008, -3/+9if toshiba is 5th at 20% , then 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st places are at least 20%.
that adds up to 100% - where do apple's share come from - can't exist. - norman619, on 09/14/2008, -4/+10Yes. You do know that PC stands for Personal Computer right?
- mousky, on 09/14/2008, -1/+7Is this yet another article with a sensational headline about Apple having a 1% market share in some specific segment of the market? Since when did having a 1% market share translate into front page news?
- viksmaester, on 09/14/2008, -0/+5What??
There are more than 5 companies making computers? - Zaphrod, on 09/14/2008, -0/+5I am not a Mac user as I find them too expensive but there is absolutely nothing a PC can do that a Mac can't aside from cost less for similar power.
- Wakuko, on 09/14/2008, -0/+4Lies, statistics and numbers pulled off their ass
***** believes in asstechnica? - santaliqueur, on 09/14/2008, -1/+5"Before the switch to Intel" is the operative phrase.
- VirgilNilson, on 09/14/2008, -5/+9@ZephyrNinety: Mac users would.
- goodnewsevery1, on 09/14/2008, -4/+8Hello, the hardware wars ended long ago. Apple lost. Yup some fancy ads oh and they changed over to what chip? has brought them back slightly. OS? frankly, they are quickly becoming irrelevant. Want a cheap Mac? Build a low end computer and install Linux.
iphone??? just more mass marketing crap. When your standing in line please Moo loudly so we all know you are just a herd animal being manipulated by low IQ advertisement people.
Its absolutely amazing that our society survived without cell phones that do everything. - djgreedo, on 09/14/2008, -2/+6Nonsense. Even Digg users post comments about switching from Mac to PC and we all know how many Mac lovers are on this site.
With Vista and the Live applications, and with the upcoming integration of Zune, XBox, and Windows, the main benefit of Macs (that they have a neat, closed, consistent 'ecosystem') will become largely null. - swimtwobirds, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3sshhh.
- jgtg32a, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4Um you might want to try adding vista to that laptop, because sleep mode is great in vista it goes to sleep and comes back from it in full no problem in about 5 seconds
- jakem1, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3And Apple is the #1 provider of white computers. What's your point?
- MattBD, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3Yeah, it is rubbish. Even a Windows PC "just works" out of the box, unless there's actually something wrong with it. And Linux "just works" with a lot more hardware than a Mac.
- PolarBearFire, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3That's only important because you picked the one stat that Apple is #1 at. The sub $1000 market is orders of magnitude larger than than the over $1000.
- K4emic, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4Are Microsoft stories any different?
Thought so.
/discussion - tnoy, on 09/14/2008, -2/+5Untrue. I know a couple Mac users that are switching back to Windows for their next purchase.
- supersteve, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3everything thing would sell better if it was cheaper
- Flytrap, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3"I hate how Apple only cares about their bottom line$"
Do you know of any company with shareholders (whether listed or not) that have risked and invested their hard earned money that does not care about its bottom line? - 1807, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3Ask any honest woman, bigger is always better.
- MacParrot, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3@Quiks
Sorry, the number of people building their own is not significant no matter how easy it is. Most people don't want to bother and will pay a little more for a decent warranty and to have something that just works out of the box.
As far as OS X vs Windows, it's all a matter of which works better for the individual. For me that's OS X, though I use Windows everyday at my regular gig and have no issues with it.
Maybe you got dugg down for ranting? - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+5BS. I owned a Dual G5 for 2 years and sold that sucker. Cubase SX 3 would constantly crash on OS X (before the switch to Intel). Point being... some people do go back.
- stephapple, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4*Bangs head against wall*
- idbar, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4In any case, no wonder why is sixth. It appears to me that the 5 more important brands of computers are on top of them.
- damack, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2I couldn't agree more Apple don't make as much money off the OS but their prices are very unreasonable.
I love their hardware and Mac OSX is a slice of heaven but even though I own a fully decked out Mac Pro for work and love it I really can't recommend it. It's a shame because for my work purposes I wouldn't be seen dead without a Mac. - Zaphrod, on 09/14/2008, -1/+3So, you think Number 1 means highest quality or in some way, other than sales numbers, superior? Because McDonald's is the number 1 restaurant in the world and Coke is the number 1 Manufactured Drink in the world they are somehow better than a 3 Michelin Star restaurant or a nice Amarone?
- protodon, on 09/14/2008, -2/+4If they actually manufactured their stuff in the USA the price would be justified but it's only "designed" here. They act like all the other companies who have stuff built in asia, don't design their ***** at home!
- MacParrot, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2YEAH! All you have to do is pay $15 a month every month for all the music that Rhapsody offers! Oh hold on, the copyright holders hold back on some newer songs until sales go down? Wait, some songs aren't available unless you purchase the album (TBF, iTunes has to do this too because of copyright owners). OH! But you get FM! Who doesn't want FM with it's annoying DJs and bland content just like every other station in your market since they're all practically owned by the same companies!
I bought a player so I wouldn't HAVE to listen to that crap. On the rare occasion I do listen, it's for a sporting event or weather. Neither of which I need often enough to want an FM player on my iPod. - jakem1, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2Regardless of whether the Zune is a "vanity project" or not, it's currently outdoing the iPod (classic and nano) in terms of design, features and user experience.
You can hardly say that Windows is in deep *****. Vista sales are increasing, the new ad campaign is generating lots of interest, development of Windows 7 is continuing apace. With 97% market share I doubt Windows is going anywhere soon.
Microsoft have found it hard to come up with a coherent strategy regarding integration over the last few years (since the whole monopoly thing) but do seem to have interesting plans along the lines that djgreedo mentioned. There may be reason to doubt that it will ever happen but a lot of companies are looking to Microsoft to break the iTunes stranglehold.
In the meantime, Apple have struggled to overcome bad publicity for the best part of this year. Issues with Leopard at release have left it out in the cold and their whole PC line is now being overshadowed by the iPhone. In the meantime, the first half of the year was taken up by complaints about the original iPhone. When the iPhone 3G was released it got a whole lot of good publicity which quickly soured and Apple have been playing catch-up ever since. Meanwhile, the iPhone has cannibalised the whole iPod line and the Let's Rock event was a complete waste of time and overshadowed by the Zune 3.0 announcements.
Mark my words, the iPhone will be Apple's Achille's heel. They are pouring all their eggs into that basket but in the long run they'll struggle to maintain mindshare in the mobile phone market. Once people move on to the next great phone Apple may very well find that they've got nothing left. - Balanced, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2Actually you might be surprised but this isn't always true. Studies have shown that products priced too low for the market just don't sell well: people assume it's the cheap (and thus less reliable) option.
Generally unless you can pull off being a "high end brand" (like Apple) your best price point is probably somewhere in the middle to bottom of the pack. Low enough to get attention, but let someone else be the 'cheap crap.' - peterinjapan, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2I agree with you. While I find Macs give incredible value, since every Mac is a friggin' PC too (since I develop PC software this saves me rather a lot of green not buying PCs to sit beside the Macs), I bailed on Apple monitors a while ago. Mainly, 1 year warranty isn't going to work for something that's a commodity, as monitors, hard drives, memory etc. is.
- joeyhndc, on 09/14/2008, -1/+3No, no, no. Apple = Quizno's, PC = Subway
At Subway, you pick your own ingredients, and if you know what ingredients go well together, you can get a great tasting sandwich on the cheap.
At Quizno's, they pick the ingredients for you and toast it, you can make some slight tweaks, but most people don't. You're guaranteed a good sandwich, but you pay more for the priviledge.
Can you tell I've thought about this in the past? - SEANWOOKIE, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Why should anyone care what rank they have? Just use your OS be happy about it.
