Apple Mac event Scheduled for 8/7

engadget.com — The press are being invited to an Apple "product presentation for Mac" at Apple Town Hall in Cupertino on the morning of Tuesday, August 7th.

      You're right, I totally thought that it was not for 8/7, next tuesday, but rather 8/7 the 8th of july... I was wondering how they managed to make Time Machine actually work so they hold an event in the past.. Pretty sure this means the new imacs will require 1.21 jiggawatts of power to operate..

One of the nice things about kanji is that it only takes 1 character for 年 (nenn or year), 月("gatsu" or month) and 日("bi" or day), which is the same amount of characters we use as the "/" or "-" which are ambiguous! so the date in japanese would be ２００７年8月７日.

      I doubt Apple would hold up sending off a computer to save a person from buying iLife. They'd rather get it out the door, charge your card, and either offer it to you for a small fee, or have you buy it for the full price.

      and they might have held off (unlikly though i agree) because when you buy something you have a certain period of time where if the price changes or a better package becomes available for a cheaper price you can return or get the difference returned which is more hassle then just putting someone on hold. Still i doubt its the case

      iPods are always released in the fall after the back-to-school deal.

    • MixedSpleens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1While I think the new iMac is the most likely a small MacBook Pro isn't out of the question I know a couple people now that are holding on to their 12" powerbooks as they are still waiting for a smaller MBP. that being said the macbook does kind of fit that space, and it is a nice computer despite the fact that it is their non pro line. I think we will see it when we see it, and ruling anything out, or getting your hopes up for something specific is risky business.

            that said, the big problem with running bog-standard PC video cards in a mac previously wasn't anything to do with endianess or CPU architecture, it was the lack of PC-BIOS, which video cards require to initialize properly.

            Current intel-based macintoshes are EFI based.... they still have no PC-BIOS, so I'm not certain you /can/ upgrade the card, except with cards that apple sells

It's something smallish, probably software updates (iLife/iWork) or new small announcements. No new iPods, possibly new iMacs. Any new hardware will be peripheral in nature (excluding iPod based peripherals)

I ordered a Mac Pro for my office yesterday and it ships August 3rd. I doubt they would put it in your macbook pro and not my Mac Pro. But, maybe we will both get a happy surprise.

      Apple will likely release it thru the itunes store and wont make a big deal about it. if you have ur iphone set to autosync then it should be a breeze.

  • patrickloggins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I'm glad they actually are keeping up with the Mac crowd after the whole pushing Leopard back for the iPhone thing. Obviously, they were right in needing to push the iPhone up (look at their sales), so it's great that the Mac has its own event here.

    I wonder if they'll ever change the iMac name to just Mac. It would adhere to their naming system, but they always say stuff like "Choose your Mac", and having a "Mac" product in the choices is kind of confusing. I personally like the iMac name.

    • tracydanger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Comes down to how often you would use it while out and about. I personally much prefer a larger screen - I love my iMac and instead of getting a Macbook, I'm much more likely to get a smart phone to get info on the go. Most of my computing takes place at home.

    Apple very well might have something up their sleeve. If they didn't say that it was "Mac Only," then people would be less inclined to buy iPhones and wait for possible iPods. Remember, they could classify iPod as a MAC accessory.

    On a related note...do local Apple stores have products the day they are announced? Can I just walk into my local Apple store (which is brand new, never been there myself yet), and purchase one, or do they get their stock sometime after the announcement?

I am not saying that they are the best or the most innovative. What i am saying is they change the way we look at PC's. And since a Mac Pro can run both operating systems i saw a lot of people 'switch' just because they like the design. I know it is a mute point in the end, but that is what apple does best. Create consumer devices that look good and work as advertised.

      • Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1See, this is why so many actually stay with windows: they're not stupid enough to get blue screens and malware all the time, unlike those who really need a drool-proof computer. In fact, unless you thoroughly abuse your windows box, through incompetence or malice, BSODs and malware are about as common in windows as they are under OSX.

  • miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Anyone think it will be a Mac Mini update? That's probably the oldest hardware design so if they aren't discontinuing it then it's due for a change. (And I just bought one on eBay so it would figure it gets updated before I even receive it)

    But then maybe the Mini really is dead. I have an Apple TV (which I'm returning) and I could see how that could be their new Mini-type device. It's a great product and if they could just add a blu-ray player into the next generation and it could be a really good unit to put under your TV.
