Mongoose? Meerkat...?....Catwoman..?
Whatever they're called, I've always liked Apple's pussy. - SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51It's good to hear that Apple has confirmed the release date of its answer to Windows Vista: Fall 2004. :D
I'm not a fanboy or anything, I just think that's fun to say. - uranium, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37At least it's not October like some rumor was claiming.
Thank you Apple for confirming that it's still coming out in spring.
Can't wait to get my hands on the latest cat! - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but there will be something else.
I mean, there has to be. Apple just can't release this, it's not worth an upgrade. - julian02392, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32steve jobs said some of the new things are "top secret"
- msodrew, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34Still, spring could be mid June which isn't exactly everyone's hopeful perception of "Spring" (ie: april).
- Rosstafari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23@audiowizard: Digg for sneaking a naughty word past the profanity filter.
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Apple actually announced Leopard's release date as Spring 07 last June. Spring is officially over June 20th and WWDC is scheduled for June 10th. I think they'll make it by at least 10 days.
- bmoseley07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19As opposed to Microsoft, right?
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19@audiowizard - "So is Leopard coming late March or what???"
Doubtful.
Technically speaking, "Spring" starts in March and goes until mid June. I would guess we're looking at June, not March. - LordVoldemort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Most cool things are under the hood anyway. Mac OS X is a developer's playground second only to Linux.
- bmoseley07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Actually, no. That's actually the article they [don't] want you to read, as it's false. Learn to read one of these days.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Is the rumor mill ever right? I think it's just meant to be good gossip to keep us entertained between new products.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Seriously, then, why did you respond? I care enough to read the article and comments and then further comment, but if you don't, move on. We don't want you here anyway.
- dpmorri, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14WWDC is June 11-15, and is filled with seminars based around Leopard...it basially has to be out by then...My guess would be in stores on Tuesday June 12
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Apple insider sources have confirmed with me that Leopard WILL be released THIS YEAR. I cannot tell you who told me this, but lets just say I call him Steve.
/sarcasm - SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -15/+24Pff, I'm no fanboy! Hell, I'm on Vista now. Of course, by saying that I probably just cost myself the precious fanboy digg vote, but oh well, I've got nothing to lose!
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This was obvious. Leopard is to be released very close to the iPhone and the new iLife and a million other advancements like hardware and other pro software, or I'll eat my hat. It simply makes too much sense for all of the new things Apple have in mind to leverage Leopard features and to create what amounts to the "perfect media storm" with a literal hurricane of new products. Those who dislike Apple news on Dig should plan a month long trip to South America during this timeframe.
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Devastating crushing defeat for Microsoft.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7In direct response to your question, yes, I would buy hardware without concern for the OS version that it ships with. An OS upgrade on a Mac is a very painless process when it is needed and since the OS costs peanuts you won't lose much money. As far as I am concerned you should make your buying decision based on the hardware and, most importantly, the chance that a revision is going to occur soon. In this respect I would advocate waiting at the moment. It has been almost 6-months since the MacBook Pro was last updated and therefore the chances are high that a revision may occur soon. Unless the current model is all that you need I'd suggest waiting to see what the next version is like, which will probably ship with Leopard. Intel is releasing its Santa Rosa chipset (I believe they are calling this Centrino Pro or something like at) which will, amongst other things, bring faster memory to the current Core 2 Duo processors and I'd expect to see this in the next range of MacBook Pros.
All this said, I ended up waiting about a year for the right MacBook Pro to be released for me and the waiting was torture. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9OS 10.6 Liger
Rawr... - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Guys,
It'll be out when Apple releases it. March April June? Who cares? Trying to decide when to buy a new machine based on when an OS is going to be released? You've got to be kidding me. You're going to spend a few grand on a new computer and then worry about a $129 OS? Is there something broken in 10.4 that makes it unusable?
I'll make it easy for you...
Buy a new computer when you need one or your old one's performance is below par for what you do.
Buy a new OS when it's features outweigh that cost
Stop whining (heh, this comment almost guaranteed to piss off nearly everyone except those with any common sense) - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10is it just me or are they running out of cats? seriously, whats left?
- Rosstafari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I love it when some guy takes the time to post a three line comment on how he doesn't care.
- geoffpado, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7not updated for 3 months at a time - They've been updated about every month
no documentation -- Apple's always been light on documentation as far as development goes.
and more bugs than 10.0 beta -- Not possible. - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Think WWDC - June.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If there's not a complete finder re-haul, I'm not going to be happy. Constant hanging while exploring networks, UI inconsistency, there's a lot of room for improvement.
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"...the "Top Secret Features" haven't been seen in the wild and if they do exist then they worry me greatly - they need to be given the testing time necessary to ensure that everything works."
Yeah. I'm sure they're not testing them at all. Just because they don't release something to the public doesn't mean it's not tested. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4finder is changed in the dev builds, of course it will be changed in the finals as well.
- jmob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wow, tell us how you really feel.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yes Apple, listen to couple of fanboys and digg trolls and ship incomplete OS.
Congrats!
sigh - flap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They will have to get it out on time. After all the hating on Vista they will get bombarded by the press and windows peeps if they don't.
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why do you click on links that don't interest you? You need a hobby.
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3somehow I can't imagine Apple enabling wobbly windows....
Anyway, let's tally up everything Apple's added
1. Spaces // we've all been waiting for this
2. Core Animation
3. OBJ-C GARBAGE COLLECTION!!! // very exciting
4. Time Machine // not so exciting... just looks flashy
5. ZFS // BIG
6. 64 bit apps // also big!
7. Front row... // ony my mini, w/o a remote or camera or anything, this is good.
8. resolution independance
9. OpenGL improvements
10. Ruby on rails
It's quite a nice package, and there's still the 'Top Secret' stuff, plus ilife, and other improvements that I've forgotten. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3do most of apple products see the light of our day before release?
I bet they have enough internal testers to get everything ready for us. - ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And when exactly did a balding middle aged man, wearing a Dolce & Gabbana Black T-Shirt, and Levi's 501 Blue Jeans walk out onto a stage a say... oh and one more thing Lepord will ship this March and we are taking pre-orders today.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really they only need 4 more cats, for 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9. I'm assuming they're going to switch to a different animal entirely with OS 11. Mac OS Dachsund after all the big cats?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4While I agree there is much to be done and Apple needs to fix the finder and network shares, I dispute your Windows performance. I am sitting here with three Mac's and one Lenovo CoreDuo T60 and one Dell T620 CoreDuo both running XP and bother are slower to access network shares than my old G4 1.4DP or my MacBook Pro. Now, having said that, the real speed demon is my old G3 running OS 9! For all its faults the Chooser in OS 9 just pops! Click on AppleShare and "bam!" there they are! Now that's somethign to shoot for!
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I (unfortunately) agree.
Next question, when do the new Mac Pros and iMac's show up? - Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The tone of your comment is bit off (I'm not sure that anyone has described the developer releases as being "garbage" but certainly they aren't ready) but I do agree with the sentiment. Leopard does not sound to be close to being ready at the moment, the "Top Secret Features" haven't been seen in the wild and if they do exist then they worry me greatly - they need to be given the testing time necessary to ensure that everything works. As much as I'd like to get my hands on Leopard now (the new developer tools and frameworks look like they will rock) I want a release that is RIGHT and I'm prepared to wait for that. Tiger wasn't right at release and therefore I had occasional kernel panics for a few releases and I don't need that again.
More than anything else at the moment it is the lack of information about this release that worries me. No new information since WWDC last year, I believe, is a cause for concern. When Apple updates the Leopard pages on their site to show a complete feature list that has been successfully tested by ADC members then I'll be happy. - moudig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The question is: who are the morons who believed in the nonsensical rumors that it will be delayed in connection with Vista&Bootcamp?
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just keep throwing out buzzwords and hope for the best digg wise? You'll be waiting awhile for that.
- TechnoApostle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I've been waiting anxiously for Leopard to come out before I buy my Macbook Pro- But should I just go ahead and update later?
- jtrwallace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3haha, exactly! as much as i think most rumors are garbage i still faithfully read them everyday in anticipation of some new snippet of information. we are just excited about it... what do women do when a good looking new man comes to the block? same thing
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or, it's just someone trying to create a quick buying opportunity in a stock that is on fire.
- HalBSure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple reaffirmed their previous statements in regards to the truthfulness or untruthfullness posited by reports released concerning released reports about Leopard's reported release schedule.
Better? - xbasilx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$120? when did bittorrent start charging?
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If the rumour that Input Managers are removed, I am not upgrading. I am not giving up my own custom OS and $200 worth of licensed software which relies on Input Managers for some functionality.
And no, I am not just speaking about "Themes" nerds seems to hate. Also let me add, I am disgusted from same graphics for 1 week. - Lockhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ashamed to say that this actually brought a smile to my face. xD
- fucayama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Plus a new and improved DVD player, the current on makes me cry.
