- tumbl3w33d, on 08/19/2008, -3/+73hey! the update took off the fingerprints and smudges off of my phone!
- Jabo4, on 08/18/2008, -5/+74No comments due to the extremely long backup process.
- sockpuppets, on 08/19/2008, -7/+62Vote your mother for discount lap dances.
- theaverageidiot, on 08/19/2008, -2/+49Apparently the keyboard lag is reduced. I sure hope so, it's freaking annoying texting when it's lagging.
- kylef, on 08/19/2008, -2/+30Contact app lag/not being responsive for 3 seconds hopefully fixed? God I hope so.
- mmijatov, on 08/18/2008, -16/+42this is ultimately why i don't want to get a jailbroken/hacked ipod . . . I just don't have the desire or patience to play cat and mouse . . .
- NRay7882, on 08/19/2008, -2/+27reticulating splines. . .
- slikk115, on 08/19/2008, -4/+29you are seriously saying that on digg?
- mgill3, on 08/19/2008, -5/+30YESSSS.... (currently very frustrated with iPhone 3G's performance)
- astericks, on 08/19/2008, -2/+24hope they fix the problem where apps start to crash after installation from the app store. I'm kinda getting sick of turning off my phone and then turn it back on to use those apps.
- Frozo, on 08/19/2008, -1/+21They said that LAST time, and it was BS. For some reason, after EVERY update, someone proclaims "it feels snappier!" zzzz...
- motivatedguy, on 08/19/2008, -1/+19Remember to put your phone in Airplane mode before updating. You don't want to start the update over if someone calls =)
- LumpOfCole, on 08/18/2008, -1/+18Perhaps, but in this case, the iPhone 3G has some actual bugs that need actual fixing.
- unixbomber, on 08/19/2008, -2/+18why are you required to update your jailbroken/hacked ipod as soon as an update is available? oh yeah, not necessary, you don't have to... not really that big of a deal.
- phatduckk, on 08/19/2008, -0/+16what i really want is the "make the contacts list not slow as hell" release. that would make my day
- supermanred, on 08/19/2008, -9/+24Its not a 248mb update, its a 248mb firmware file. Keep in mind that previous firmwares for the iPhone have been around 360mb.
Also, keep in mind that that file includes a fully functioning OS X with a different UI from your Mac, it's the iPhone UI and quite stripped down (mostly media files removed)...
not an update. Apple usually releases entire files... so for example if you buy a Macbook today, it will only have one or two OS X updates not 150 like Windows XP. - Lewiji, on 08/19/2008, -0/+15Horizontal Mail > SMS!
- Tenoq, on 08/19/2008, -2/+16It feels snappier!
- kyle212, on 08/19/2008, -1/+12This firmware can be Jailbroken and unlocked using quickpwn
(This tutorial is for the old iPhone 1G only, A similar process may work for 3G)
. Start downloading the official 2.0.1 firmware for iPhone 1G, (if you already have a copy, you can skip), from
2. Put your phone to DFU mode, restore to the latest 2.0.2
3. Copy the 2.0.1 firmware you downloaded above to the Pwnie tool folder
4. Run the iPhone_2G.bat ( I haven't tried the windows version that's just released, should be the similar )
5. Voila, after everything is finished, you will have an unlocked and jailbroken 2.0.2 iPhone.
My theory is that, since the Pwnie tool doesn't re-write the entire firmware, it only unlocks and jailbreaks, therefore you can start with a clean 2.0.2 firmware, and Pwnie just cracks it.
Good Luck.
EDIT: This does work on the 3G - ramsinks.com, on 08/19/2008, -1/+12Obviously you have never used a smart phone.
- stukdog, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11I updated without even wondering whether NetShare would still work. I thought about it right in the middle of the update process and tested it first thing. Phew! Still works.
- Frozo, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10Ha! I just updated, and it actually DOES! I think the "address book/search/keyboard pop-up/auto-fill" issue is finally gone. What a bitch that was.
- oliversan, on 08/18/2008, -6/+16I'm assuming this will break the Jailbreak?
- chroko, on 08/19/2008, -1/+11Is your signal is weaker... or is the indicator now more accurate?
Which is more likely? - joeycerone, on 08/18/2008, -2/+12for a few days probably
- RadiatedAnt, on 08/19/2008, -4/+13you need to have your innernets tubes tied.
- AxeMAYHEM, on 08/19/2008, -3/+12My guess is that Apple is only fixing back-end problems with the phone. I'm not talking about the API or the GUI, but changes to the firmware for the phone carriers or future carriers. 2.0.1 did nothing that I saw for us, and I doubt that 2.0.2 has done anything either.
When 2.0.1 landed I did chuckle at a digg comment where the poor guy went through each icon and said "oh yeah the animation's a little snappier" and "calculator loads much faster". Wishful thinking I guess. - bigsteve, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9There....isn't........an on-phone update downloader...
- chrisappleton, on 08/19/2008, -2/+11Why don't you just cancel the backup? You just click the x next to it in the iTunes status bar. The rest of the sync will still complete as normal.
- poesybeater, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9Because apps contain app-specific user data.
- z3rr0, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10Not true actually. I did a test. Complete backup... took over an hour. Unplugged the phone. Opened Safari, visited a few web sites... played a game or two. Plugged it back in and the backup still took forever. If I remember correctly it was 340K of data or some silly number like that. No new apps, no major changes to the data.
- Virgule, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10On a Mac you can use these two lines in Terminal to disable automatic backup. It is still available if you right-click the iPod/iPhone on the iTunes sidebar.
Let me know if you know the Windows equivalent.
$ defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false
$ defaults write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true - Sess, on 08/19/2008, -2/+11I keep missing calls that never rang on my phone. I don't know if I should blame the iPhone or if I should wish this was an AT&T patch to their network instead of the phone patch. Hope it fixes all the lag issues, and the once or twice a week phone crashes (starting to feel like I'm talking about Vista, that is just not good).
- ethan55, on 08/19/2008, -5/+13you can stop backup process and continue with iphone sync by clicking on the "x" at the right corner of the backup progress bar.
- ChinezePanda, on 08/19/2008, -4/+12wtf... this download took me 45 seconds.
Where the ***** you guys live? Iowa? - blackinthmiddle, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8What are you using, an ISDN modem or something?
- cthellis, on 08/19/2008, -2/+10It snaps feelier!
- theaverageidiot, on 08/19/2008, -2/+10I've been waiting an hour for my iPhone to backup. I can't wait for these "bug fixes".
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -2/+10Not really.
- Tenoq, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7Australia :(
- Kanaka, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8All the lags are still there. Nothing to see here people. Probably just prepping for Fridays 20+ countries release and to further tighten security of the iPhone 3G's baseband
- lesfleanut, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7His retarded indeed.
- ramsinks.com, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9Na, JB 2.0.1 works fine here.
I'm not giving up QIK. - shinyplastic, on 08/19/2008, -1/+7Why aren't Microsoft service packs ever dugg up?
- knute5, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6Vista ones were/are...
- jkirk7msa, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6Dude, I've had the same problem the past two days. I keep having friends call me and they say I don't answer but it never rang...
- sasper, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6Typically, yes, but not when installing this update. It pops up a window that can't be closed/cancelled or anything, and has to go through the entire process of backing up before installing the update.
- lovemorgul, on 08/18/2008, -1/+7Any word on whether it fixes the problems the Iphone can have maintaining connections some people have been reporting?
