- digitalarcanum, on 01/16/2008, -9/+18I agree. Apple sucks and this year's macworld just proves it in spades. they haven't done anything revolutionary.
- NotaFanboy87, on 01/16/2008, -4/+2Ah, so you expect Apple to do something revolutionary in order for them not to suck? What if they do, would it shut you up? No. You obviously care enough about the company to keep your fingers on its pulse, why not try to see what they are trying to accomplish and maybe ask yourself "why" they do the things they do? Couldn't hurt.
- digitalarcanum, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5the thing is I don't care why they do the things they do. The fact is their ***** is over-priced. anything Apple makes, there's a PC compatible version that's better, more efficient, and more affordable and made with the same quality hardware (if you think that extra money you're paying goes towards hardware quality, you're vastly mistaken.)
- ophello, on 01/17/2008, -4/+1youre pretty much an ignoramus with a chip on his shoulder who likes to make ***** up rather than actually compare the products.
i doubt you even looked at the other thin models out there. macbook air is easily comparable to other models, and fairly priced as well. do some research before opening your dumb hole.
- masbestiaquetu, on 01/16/2008, -3/+2what has microsoft done revolutionary in the past year?
- TheMidnight, on 01/16/2008, -2/+7Driven more people to Apple.
- digitalarcanum, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4the touch screen interface table, the windows home server, provided express editions of the visual studio programs, provided a free SDK for game developers, etc.. That's just microsoft. that's just a software provider. Now go ahead and ask me how many pc manufacturers have provided revolutionary things for the hardware industry and it beats Apple every time.
- pinstripewizard, on 01/17/2008, -4/+0touch screen tables are great for things like ummmmmm... decorating virtual snowboards?
- MadOtaku, on 01/17/2008, -3/+1Microsoft's awesome table thing (Surface?) isn't anything Microsoft came up with. It was bought off someone else and was really just an up-scaling of already existing tech.
I don't know enough about Windows Home Server to comment on it; but it seems pretty nice. Not really sure how "revolutionary" it was though.
"Express" editions of software have been done by Apple, Adobe, and other high-end software producers for years now (probably at least 10). That's hardly revolutionary.
I assume you mean an XBox 360 SDK. If so, hasn't the PS3 had one for a while now? I think other platforms have too, but gaming isn't my area of expertise.
Personally, I would have talked about Microsoft's Zune; with its fantastic wireless capabilities, it's the closest thing to revolutionary that Microsoft has done in a while (even though that N95 had more stuff sooner/simultaneously).
- ophello, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1other manufacturers COPY apple. you got it backwards. look at the iphone, and how quickly other phone companies copied the formal design and interface design.
- digitalarcanum, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5right so time capsule isn't a copy of windows home server? the Apple TV isn't a gimped copy of a HTPC (windows media center). The asus EeePC, solid state disks were made available for PCs first. The mac pros that have multiple graphics cards in them (SLI) guess who did that? Nvidia. Who does Nvidia cater to? games. Where are gamers? on PCs. DDR3. AMD made dual core processors mainstream. I've yet to see an Apple system with AMD processors in it. RIM blackberry, and blackberry enterprise server revolutionized both the business and PC world.
Are you seeing a pattern here?

- ophello, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5tell that to the hundreds of engineers who spent thousands of hours figuring out how to develop an integrated board in a package that small, and the intel engingeers who had to shrink their processor by 60%.
You, sir, dont understand the meaning of "innovation".
This is CLEARLY innovative. Overpriced? Yes. Innovative? Yes.
So quit your bitch'n.- Abomonog, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Actually the copying goes both ways. It's well known that Windows is a rip off the Apple interface. (one great example of ripping off Apple) But Apple hardware technology is mostly copied from the PC innovations and maybe miniaturized a bit. The Integrated board was a PC thing BTW. Apple again just shrank it.
And digitalarcanum, The reason you don't see AMD possessors in Apples is because Apple got greedy about rights in the 80's when IBM gave them away. They're still greedy even though it almost killed the company. So as long as Apple won't allow 3rd party MB's and CPU's AMD cannot produce for Apples. So no AMD CPU's for Apple.

- cozmo88, on 01/16/2008, -3/+1Could you explain how reading an accent from Snatch would help?
Snatch is set in "England", not Scotland the accents sound nothing alike at all.
If you are referring to the gypsies in the film they are from Ireland, another country which doesn't happen to be Scotland.
As a side note it's also interesting how you didn't guess grantmc1's nationality from the way his comment was abbreviated, rather by looking at his profile.- MacEnvy, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Separate comments in the same reply, sorry about that. Here's a clarification:
1. His comment begins to make sense if you read it with a heavy brogue, such as that of the Irish Gypsies in Snatch, or a heavy Scottish accent if you prefer. It just works.
2. I guessed his nationality before looking at his profile, and was pleased to find out I was correct.- cozmo88, on 01/16/2008, -1/+0I know my first comment and I managed to place it in the wrong part, sorry.
I thought it would have made more sense to refer to a movie spoken in that kind of dialect such as trainspotting.
There were only two abbreviations in his comment "lk" and "n", but there were more than a few colloquialisms (a, eh, naw, am) which would give away the nationality more than n which is widely used outside of Scotland as far as I can tell, and lk that I guess most people would mistake for look than like what grantmc1 meant.

I believe there's at least if not more Anti Apple "fanboys" on this site than Mac users and people who has accepted the fact that just because someone likes a product that they don't like, doesn't mean that he or she is a retarded maggot.
Bashing other people because they like another product (I'm talking about everyone right now) is so bloody 1990 that it hurts. Even worse is that many simply bash the other product for no other reason but that someone ELSE likes the said product.
Now suck this; I own an iPhone and I love it, I think gun control laws are great, Super Mario Galaxy is fun but got to be the most overrated game in history, closely followed by Bioshock which also was great but far from perfect, I'm against piracy and I'm even thinking about buying a PS3.- slvrbullet87, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2You would be my hero if it wasnt for the iPhone. - antdude, on 01/16/2008, -0/+12Does yours have Apple's logo?
- borez, on 01/16/2008, -11/+2Evolope
- basic0, on 01/16/2008, -12/+187I seriously couldn't tell if this was a joke when I first started reading it. I think my line of reasoning was "If they'll release the MacBook Air for $1800-3200, then a $300 envelope doesn't seem that outrageous."
- pixelmixer, on 01/16/2008, -7/+5agreed +digg
- streak, on 01/16/2008, -13/+2I seriously think anyone's a dork if for one instant they believed it. Like, it says so on a highly respected news site like jizz-modo, so it must be true.
- blahtastic, on 01/16/2008, -3/+4I didn't believe it, but if apple put these out, sadly, I bet a few would sell.
- rspeed, on 01/16/2008, -8/+6Leave the satire to the professionals.
- ophello, on 01/17/2008, -5/+4i dont know why people are bitching about the $3000 price tag when its a ***** OPTION and has NOTHING to do with apple's pricing. its a SSD drive, for gods sake. of course its expensive as hell.
- Scaryclouds, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3Unlike your mom...
- tiberone, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8i seriously thought this was real. does anyone remember the $100 leather ipod cases apple came out with a while ago? just a leather sleeve with a cheap strap sewn in..
- hyperionshift, on 01/16/2008, -2/+76Oh noes, the clip and tie-string are embedded in the case. If they fail, you'll have to ship it back to Apple for replacement. Thankfully, it's still free shipping!
- Lunarparcel, on 01/16/2008, -0/+9Yeah, it is free shipping to send in your broken Manila case for repair, but what's even better... they actually send you a FREE Manila case in which to package and send in your broken one. Some folks might just think, "Well, gee whiz - I'll just keep the free one they sent me and toss my broken one in the garbage." But no way, man. That would void your warranty.
- Waskonator, on 01/16/2008, -3/+24$20 to be able to close it? pffft. I mean, I've paid $5 for a bit of red string before. But $20???
- Firehed, on 01/16/2008, -2/+12You've paid $5 for string before? I've got a piece of real estate that may interest you...
- Lythium, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4You don't knit, do you.... Admittedly, $5 will get you a REALLY LONG piece of string (half a scarf's worth, sometimes).
- dkirkham, on 01/16/2008, -4/+1I'm guessing from the name "FireHed" that no, he doesn't knit!
- Lythium, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4You don't knit, do you.... Admittedly, $5 will get you a REALLY LONG piece of string (half a scarf's worth, sometimes).
- lrdntwnd, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6you get white string included... it's if you want to upgrade to the red....
- holygram, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Sorry sir, we don't accept bits of string.
- Firehed, on 01/16/2008, -2/+12You've paid $5 for string before? I've got a piece of real estate that may interest you...
- yikiad, on 01/16/2008, -12/+5I can't believe they would produce a case like this, I mean hell, where's the inter-office memo field? sheesh!
- jptolife, on 01/16/2008, -18/+7I don't understand the need to bash Apple all the time. If you do not like their products, you are not forced to buy them period. Don't you people like something a lot? anything? Just think of that and then think of people who like apple, is their lives to like and not like whatever they want and you have no ***** right to call anyone a fanboy. Assholes.
- Tourney3p0, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I like cake a lot. I would probably wager that many people here like cake a lot. Yet you don't see many cake-related articles here. It would be equally sad to make cake my life or be a self-proclaimed cake fanboy. If someone gets to the point where Betty Crocker releases a new recipe and they lay out of work to go purchase it, they should probably go ahead and be put out of their misery.
- blahtastic, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5*sigh* Someone has to do it.
The cake is a lie. - rspeed, on 01/16/2008, -1/+4Man, that new Betty Crocker Cake Book sucks. Did you see that new recipe? Angel food??? Who the hell wants angel food cake!? I want vanilla cake with chocolate frosting! What the hell is Betty Crocker thinking making a cake book that has a recipe that's not vanilla with chocolate frosting!?
- gandhii, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2cake sucks!
- no1nos, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Do you have any good analogies, or is this pretty much it?

- slvrbullet87, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4We cant have one article bashing on the Air? 7 or the aricles in the top 10 right now are praising apple products so why cant we make a joke?

- Thoraxes, on 01/16/2008, -2/+22Next worlds thinnest should be the price tag. Seriously.
- Lythium, on 01/16/2008, -0/+11Apple doesn't swing that way.
- hs112186, on 01/16/2008, -11/+9wow i thought manila cases were only for TPS reports :-O i am amazed, does this amazing case come in an ASUS EEE edition?
- BFisch06, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1This case does support the Eee, but for another $200 you can upgrade to the XL case, which will hold 2 Eee PCs!!!
- DrKillJoy, on 01/16/2008, -4/+6I'll wait for the Tyvek knock off.
- risico001, on 01/16/2008, -7/+0Haha great title. I thought the same when I saw it. The Air looks nice but the fact that it now lacks a CD/DVD ROM drive (Keep in mind iMacs were the first comps to do away with the 3.5" floppy). That might cause some problems even though they have that remote drive wireless capability.
- rspeed, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Not to mention the $99 external drive. The only thing Apple is doing differently here compared to companies like Sony is not bundling the drive by default.
- RadiantBeing, on 01/16/2008, -7/+57Buried as innaccurate. I just spent half an hour trying to buy one of these for my MacBook Air. It isn't on Apple's website.
- selbrit, on 01/16/2008, -4/+12please tell me you're kidding. Please.
- SupaNeo, on 01/16/2008, -34/+101This idea was blatantly stolen from a Digg comment yesterday. See for yourself:

"Oh, and one more thing....there will now be Apple branded Manilla Envelopes to carry your MacBook Air around in for just 89.99 ::wild applause::"
-StormFreak
Just when you thought you couldn't lose anymore respect for Gizmodo.- bbqsalad, on 01/16/2008, -22/+7jesus christ. you're a tool.
- mwalker05, on 01/16/2008, -4/+58im sure the giz staff was avidly scanning digg comments for an article idea. it is fact that selling an envelope as a laptop case occurred to nobody else but stormfreak. i mean its not like its obvious given that its apple and they introduced it by pulling it out of one.
- rspeed, on 01/16/2008, -1/+25Oh man, I thought of that during the keynote. That guy stole my brain waves and made that comment! WHERE IS MY ALUMINUM FOIL???
- duggfunny, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5i didn't see the presentation,
if they took it out of an envelope then doesn't that make this blog post all the more lame?
- duggfunny, on 01/16/2008, -15/+24wow, was this comment their 'inspiration'?
http://digg.com/apple/New_Apple_MacBook_Air_Is_Wor ...- Nothlit, on 01/16/2008, -1/+11Probably not. The fact that Steve Jobs himself pulled the thing out of a manilla envelope during the keynote was probably their inspiration...
- flxfxp, on 01/16/2008, -0/+10At least with this you can actually replace a component, the red kaballah string.
- FecalHurler, on 01/16/2008, -14/+8Didn't somebody make a joke about this yesterday on Digg...? I think Gizmodo stole this idea from someone on this site. For shame.
- Firehed, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7I think they stole it from Apple's own marketing material.
- pbrooks100, on 01/16/2008, -2/+3It should have been a white Tyvek bubble mailer with velcro to seal it.
- rspeed, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2I agree with the Tyvek. It's important that the humidity be regulated. A magnetic strip would be more Apple-esque, rather than velcro.
- aparatoc, on 01/16/2008, -3/+9***** for a moment.. I did think that Apple did that, and looked around the apple store to find it.
- rspeed, on 01/16/2008, -0/+8That's really, really sad.
- nebion, on 01/16/2008, -6/+16.9 inches? The thickest part of the MacBook Air is less than 1 inch...there must be some kind of confusion in regards to which dimension they are measuring...
- Digg90210, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4I guess you didn't read the part about the sandwich -- it *was* in the first paragraph...
- nstrupp2, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Who gets a sandwich in an envelope? You'd have to staple the lettuce in place or risk total sandwich failure.
- ChromaVita, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3They just put bread, lettuce, ham, and cheese in an envelope. Some assembly required.
- nstrupp2, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Who gets a sandwich in an envelope? You'd have to staple the lettuce in place or risk total sandwich failure.

Best comment on there. - insomniac8400, on 01/16/2008, -19/+5300 dollars for a padded envelope. Well done apple, well done.
- Shakermaker, on 01/16/2008, -1/+4Read the last line of the story. Next time RTFA article b4 you comment.

- zizzybaloobah, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8well at least there's no non-user-replaceable battery in it
- Lythium, on 01/16/2008, -0/+9But you have to mail it back to change the string.
- HypocriteDigg, on 01/16/2008, -11/+4Funny, but buried because it's fascist anti-Apple zealot blog Gizmodo.
- praptak, on 01/16/2008, -4/+13Ok, not very funny, but the question remains: Who the hell cares that the laptop is so ultra thin? Why does Apple pimp the "feature" so hard? It's not a fvcking palmtop for God's sake, you won't fit it into your trouser pocket anyway!
- Lythium, on 01/16/2008, -2/+2For me it would be a matter of weight. I'm a long-distance commuter, so I'm looking for a laptop which is small and lightweight while still having the functionality I need. Yes, I would prefer something which is small AND light, but if I had to pick one of the two, I would go with the lower weight. I don't intend to "fit it into my trouser pocket," but my backpack is large enough to accommodate a reasonably-sized laptop, so size isn't as much of an issue. So I could see why at least _some_ people would buy it.
That being said: my functionality requirements exclude Apple immediately, since most of my gaming addictions don't run with the Mac OS, and anything I can _afford_ from Mac wouldn't be able to support it anyway. I've used Macs for a long time in several OS incarnations and several different work environments. I don't like 'em, and I find them vastly overpriced for the specs the offer. But that's only my personal opinion. Does that mean that people who disagrees with me are automatically cretins. Would I buy this product, even if I had the money for it? Hell no. But so what? I'm not part of the target demographic anyway. - pauleric, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3It's the only good feature, they have to pimp it. Otherwise it's just a more expensive and less powerful laptop with only one usb port. I'm sure somebody will buy it, but you've got to be pretty desperate for small and lightweight.
- RikkiTikki, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1It's thin, but they compromise the features. You can spend $200 more for one that is more powerful, less than an a half inch thicker, with a CD drive. The Air is already 1799 STARTING. The one they show in their ads is 3000, and you have to get a wireless external drive if you want to watch DVDs or use a data CD. Once you get that, you might as well get a Macbook because it will take up less space.

- DecoyQ, on 01/16/2008, -7/+10dug down for Gizmodo being a bunch of dumbasses lately. First you screw up CES, now making faux-news.. They are headed downhill FAST.

- Goobernutz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5I can put my MBP into a Manila envelope too (magnum sized of course). But when I boot the Vista partition and try it, the envelope mysteriously gets grease stains on it and shortly bursts into flames. Weird...
- techweenie1, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5You can upgrade your envelope to have cooling slits included but it'll cost you $20.
