- Diggrock, on 01/25/2008, -8/+82...But, Apple will sell you a USB adapter for the low price of $29.99
- Niceguy4186, on 01/25/2008, -17/+82because it has an apple on it.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -8/+59Of course they tested it. But it would have made it .01in. thicker and more practical, so it was ignored.
- nizzy1115, on 01/25/2008, -39/+89Why would anyone buy the air over a dell m1330?
- sotopheavy, on 01/25/2008, -11/+51I'm tired of ass holes that design usb gadgets too big right at the usb connection point. It's like having a power charger that covers up 3 plugs on a power strip. ***** quit it. This is a pain in the ass especially for laptops.
- Bensch, on 01/25/2008, -11/+48Look, the Air meets USB spec. The 3G dongle doesn't. It's as simple as that. If you plug that dongle into the back of your desktop PC with a stacked-USB configuration, it'll block the above port. Sure, there's a lot of USB hardware with this problem, but it's the device vendor's problem, not Apple's.
- trunkster, on 01/25/2008, -24/+56Why would anyone buy a dell?
- GuacamoleSan, on 01/25/2008, -16/+45Because Macs are UNIX based...
- thinkdifferent, on 01/25/2008, -7/+33It's called the MacBook.... the Air is for people who want the lightest machine with a useable screen.
- thoughtudied999, on 01/25/2008, -3/+27I assume that you know the purpose of an EVDO modem.
.....Oh, you don't? Nevermind then. - AmyWhere, on 01/25/2008, -8/+31Oh for crap sake use the little extension dongle that came with the modem. I do.
- datrdigg, on 01/25/2008, -18/+41just seen this... thats too funny... did they not test to see if the majority of USB keys will fit in this... my hp laptop can fit any sized USB key
- neocognitism, on 01/25/2008, -2/+23I don't see why this is an article, much less on the front page.
Most USB modems come *with* a 4-6" USB extender cable. If yours didn't, buy one for $5. You should anyway, because it's only a matter of time before you bash the thing when you are moving around and break it, your USB port, or both. - p3ngwin, on 01/25/2008, -12/+32so the race to thinnest comes with the price of reduced functionality?
people need to get their priorities re-organize.
how heavy does something have to be before you won't carry it around V's what functionality you absolutely NEED for it to be a USEFUL TOOL......not a carry trophy to show off?
too many people are buying things for the wrong reasons. - OstrakonX, on 01/25/2008, -4/+24Hey, here's an idea...
If you can't use it, don't buy it and stop bitching. - wrenchone, on 01/25/2008, -8/+28First time I've ever seen someone suggesting that a Mac will need more cables to work compared to a Dell.
- revslowmo, on 01/25/2008, -14/+34Buy a PC
- Rikushix, on 01/25/2008, -10/+30I find it ironic how so much stuff is left out of the Air for the sake of "practicality". Portability and aesthetics aren't the end-all, be-all.
- thoughtudied999, on 01/25/2008, -29/+46Apple, I need my optical drive.
- llsethj, on 01/25/2008, -11/+27Why on gawds green earth didn't apple build in 3G?
I mean what year is this? - Skidmark66, on 01/25/2008, -3/+19hey well don't get one . .
- saleem, on 01/25/2008, -1/+16i was thinking of digging OS2Guy for the sheer thought of a "USB (56k) modem" on a macbook air... but then i went with my gut and buried him.
- wageslaven, on 01/25/2008, -4/+18What happened to all that "cables are ugly" talk? Wasnt it a dell that they used in that ridiculous ad?
- pintomp3, on 01/25/2008, -0/+14if you absolutely have to have a 3lb notebook, get a latitude d430. plus the mobile broadband card will be internal. you also get an ethernet port, swappable battery, full size video port, and multiple usb ports.
- iChuckles, on 01/25/2008, -1/+15It is called personal preference nizzy. Tell me which car you own and I will ask you why did you buy that over a different car. If all purchases were made based upon objectivity and pragmatic functions/features alone, then there would be no diversity. We would be living in a cold grey world like to one shown in the famous Apple 1984 ad. You don't have to like another persons choice, but mature people accept it.
- EustaceTilley, on 01/25/2008, -9/+22Then maybe it is not for you...
- saleem, on 01/25/2008, -6/+18so in order to get a thinner, lighter laptop, you want me to carry a cable and a USB modem adaptor?.... why not just get the dell.
- jazzboyrules, on 01/25/2008, -3/+14Why not use an ugly USB extender too, if you want to use an ugly USB modem. Using either or both looks same to me.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+12Then don't buy an Air, get a macbook you idiot.
- InfamousAtheist, on 01/25/2008, -2/+13Do you actually read the article before commenting, digging, or burying, which I'm sure you did to this story?
I didn't think so. - erikhensarling, on 01/25/2008, -4/+14You have a point, but a USB extender would do it for the lulz.
- ferrariman60, on 01/25/2008, -0/+10Dude, get more sense before commenting further. the key thing you missed there was the "3G" part. It's wireless. ya know, like 3G, the wireless data *****? Come on man. You fail.
- control98408, on 01/25/2008, -5/+14I don't really like apple, probably couldn't pay me to use one. But when will people realize it's an ultraportable laptop marketed towards a specific consumer i.e. not you!
- drouk1556, on 01/25/2008, -9/+18Are you REALLY willing to sacrifice an optical drive and several USB ports for a pound and a quarter inch?
- Littleedgitt, on 01/25/2008, -7/+16That's 3 words, you dumbass
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -9/+18fail
- tucktan, on 01/25/2008, -0/+9has nothing to do with this
- wageslaven, on 01/25/2008, -8/+17No, the air is heavier than many ultraportables. The Air is 1.35kg and the Toshiba (with multiple USB, built-in dvd & 3g, and ethernet port amoungst other features) is only 1.0kg.
- znicket, on 01/25/2008, -3/+12So when this computer sells well, are you going to realize that there is a market out there of people that don't want the same thing as you?
- uuuuut, on 01/25/2008, -2/+10Oh no, you have to buy a $5 adapter to fit a poorly designed USB device. What a tragedy. The USB device designers shouldn't add that sort of bulk right next to the plug anyway -- these sort of devices often take up two ports that are next to each other just because one port gets blocked by the device and is wasted.
- thoughtudied999, on 01/25/2008, -20/+28Same reason people buy a Mercedes instead of a Honda. For teh ladiez.
- omarqaz7, on 01/25/2008, -4/+12What! You mean i'm going to need a small extension cable?????? AWWWWWWWWWWWW MAANNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -3/+11Yes, it's called a USB extender. It's also called an external optical drive. It's also called an external Ethernet port. And an external USB hub.
These are all things that add to the weight of this laptop. The idea of having them inbuilt is that it saves you carrying (and forgetting) extra things you need on the go. - inactive, on 01/25/2008, -3/+11you people sure do complain a lot about a product you will never use. use a usb extension cable and stfu already. if you are complaining about features or lack thereof YOU ARE NOT THE MARKET FOR THE AIR. Why doesn't the new sportscar you want have 4 doors so you can fit your family in it? YOU AREN'T THE MARKET FOR IT.....the sooner you realize the world doesn't revolve around you, the better off you will be in life.
- TheKrillr, on 01/25/2008, -4/+11This comment serves one purpose: to help you properly punctuate your sentence while you type.
.,:;'"/?|!@#$%^&*()_+-=~` - iLEZ, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9Apple, I need my floppy drive.
- viksmaester, on 01/25/2008, -4/+11Doh!!!! Go buy a macbook
- ptknight, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9You have much smaller 3g usb modems available in europe. Just browse Vodafone website, for instance
- lrdntwnd, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7But they are for the market at which the MacBook Air is aimed...
- elmetald00d, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9***** moron, of course it does.
