Apple Has An iGlitch
forbes.com — AT&T said the glitch was due to problems with Apple's iTunes servers, which in addition to dishing up music and movies also link every iPhone handset to Apple. The problems led to long waits at some Apple stores Friday morning.Apple shares fell $4.05, or 2.29%, to $172.58 in Friday trading. AT&T shares were down 19 cents to close at $32.58.

- mburian, on 07/13/2008, -2/+87I'm not sure what Apple's server setup is like, but I think releasing the 2.0 firmware for all existing iPhones and iPod touches on the same day that the new iPhone 3Gs need to be activated was a mistake that could have contributed to the server problems.
- Steinr, on 07/13/2008, -2/+10had they released the 2.0 software early many existing iPhone users would have upgraded their software and realized that they would not need to upgrade, and I am sure they thought that if they release it later than the iPhone launch a lot of people would also be upset.
- superkendall, on 07/13/2008, -5/+1That seems very unlikely. Everyone already knew enough to know if the upgrade appealed or not, having the new OS would have prevented few new purchases.
- sketche, on 07/13/2008, -3/+2They had to release the 2.0 firmware upgrade at the same time (or before) the new handset. Because if the new phone needs to be restored it needs the new firmware.
- johnpaul191, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4I know a few people that were planning on getting the iPhone 3G, but are now holding out with their old phone. The ones i asked said it was a mix of the long lines, iPhone2.0 software and AT&T jacking up the monthly rate. Last year, here in the Philly area, the Apple stores had iPhones at the end of the day with no wait. People said that this past Friday night the closest Apple stores still had long lines (maybe because it was after the servers went wacky?). If they could have taken the phone home and activated it themselves (like last year), they would have upgraded. oops.
- superkendall, on 07/13/2008, -5/+1That seems very unlikely. Everyone already knew enough to know if the upgrade appealed or not, having the new OS would have prevented few new purchases.
- fanclerks, on 07/13/2008, -3/+5From what I gleaned from the Apple employees while waiting in line, everything was fine right up until California "came online" and they started doing activations. They have 56 stores in Cali alone, so I guess that slammed all the servers. The worst part is that they never came out and told any of us, we were just left waiting there for an hour or so wondering what was going on and why the line wasn't moving. After they fixed that, the problem appeared to be with contacting AT&T's servers when activating. Or so that's what the employee said the error was. I'm guessing it was the store's connection couldn't handle all of that going on at once.
- ruddy, on 07/13/2008, -13/+3Their server setup is apparently a windows 95 box in some kids basement.
- ryleyleckie, on 07/13/2008, -2/+7probably not.
- natenovs, on 07/13/2008, -3/+12i bet you they're running osx server - which would explain all the trouble they're having.
- Steinr, on 07/13/2008, -2/+10had they released the 2.0 software early many existing iPhone users would have upgraded their software and realized that they would not need to upgrade, and I am sure they thought that if they release it later than the iPhone launch a lot of people would also be upset.

- Powaqqatsi, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Quote: ""It's funny how everyone who mentions "brainwashed fanboys" are much more fanatical than any Apple user.""
I've never gone a Mac user and harassed them for using a Mac, even when they complain about things. However, every time someone complains about any non-apple product, there's always one jerk in the room who has to change the subject to "why you wouldn't have that problem on a mac". Of course, they aren't doing this with a helpful intent, they are just acting superior and inflating their own "enlightened" decisions.
It's just tiring and childish. Mac fanboys (or any fanboys really) deserve to be ridiculed because they are obnoxious and are unwilling to recognize ANY flaws with their product of choice or ANY virtues of competitors.

- HookmasterCH47, on 07/13/2008, -2/+37Growing pains are proving to be kind of a bitch for Apple. Being popular makes it harder to do these over the top product releases. Good idea, poor execution.
- Tanktunker, on 07/13/2008, -10/+8By growing pains you mean making billions and billions of dollars on products that aren't actually the best or the newest in their field even?
- irgeorge, on 07/13/2008, -6/+9Depends how you quantify 'best'. I sincerely consider the iPhone, iPod and MacBooks to be the best in their fields. I am entirely aware of cheaper & more feature rich alternatives, yet I make an informed and more crucially, holistic decision to use Apple products.
- HookmasterCH47, on 07/13/2008, -9/+4I don't see people getting in line for the Instinct or LG View, so your statement about the "not being the best" is *****. By growing pains, and I realize I should have typed a l i t t l e slower for you, I mean that we're talking about highly structured and integrated services all coming together with few lynchpins truly connecting them all. If you thought the demand was going to be this high you would have been one of the few. Apple didn't see this as a watershed day as far as profits or traffic. So, my anti-apple friend, growing pains means they're learning how to deal with mass markets while trying to hold on to the style that makes them great.
- unknownsoldierX, on 07/13/2008, -4/+3You're saying the iPhone is the best because people stand in line for it? What does that have anything to do with it?
Maybe people don't stand in line for other phones because they aren't complete tools, and they realize that the don't need to.
The fact the you're so defensive just proves that you are one of those tools. Buying Apple products is not a "lifesyle choice". - KingFog, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5irgeorge, how are MacBooks, iPods and iPhones the best then if there are cheaper, and more feature rich alternatives?
Surely the cheaper, more feature rich alternatives would be better?
Or are you just another fanboy.
- fanclerks, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4I think their main problem was just that they didn't anticipate such a large turnout so didn't have the infrastructure set up to handle it.

"It's funny how people thinks stocks are so strongly affected by very small events."
Stocks like AAPL are affected by small events. Of course it's mostly quarterly revenue and projected revenue, but tell any day trader that small events don't matter and he'll laugh at your face.

While I am impressed with Jobs with getting ***** done. Even he must know he doesn't control how the internet work.
He failed at this launch.- ericdano, on 07/13/2008, -2/+3I think they misjudged the demand for the phone. Plus, they still have to work with AT&T and suffer with their technology. If Apple ran the whole show, I'm sure it would have been a lot better. But requiring people to activate the phones in the store was AT&T's idea.....and that was asking for trouble.
The other thing that was messed up was the .Mac to .me transfer. Now, that was all Apple there. I know for about 36 hours I could not sync my work computer and home computer. However, once it was "fixed", it works amazing now. About 10 seconds after I make a change on my iCal, it shows up on my iPhone. And vice versa. Same with contacts. - santaliqueur, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Everything is working fine now. There was very high demand on launch day, and it's been fine ever since. - graiz, on 07/13/2008, -0/+8The same problem happened with the original launch. Activation is somewhat slow and with all the original people and new people upgrading at the same time it was like 'christmas' for those poor servers. They should have staggered the release of the 2.0 firmware either before or after the 3G launch.
In addition Apple released MobileMe and AppleTV updates at the same time. - mightytribble, on 07/13/2008, -0/+13I got an iPhone on Friday, and couldn't activate it in the store. No big deal ; I got it activated within an hour of getting it home. And all that without the hassle of dealing with AT&T retail, or waiting several days for phones to be shipped to me. Whilst the launch didn't go butter smooth, it went OK. All this griping about an 'iDisaster' is just the press having an easy story to report over the weekend.
- pfranz, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5I waited with my buddy for about 4 hours in line out front Friday night. When we got to the front they said that they've been having problems and that AT&T's servers "reboot" at 10pm everyday. We waited until 11pm (when the store was supposed to close) and they sent us home with a card to come back on Saturday. On Saturday it still took 2 hrs and there was a bunch of infighting between yesterday's line and the new line as to who should go first.
This store wasn't letting people go home unless the phones were activated. The 30 or so people in front of us on Friday were stuck in limbo between disabling their previous phone and before activating the new one. All after waiting for hours out front.
One of the guys there said he had been at the store since 1pm (this was now 11pm) and still didn't have a phone. Although, he did get hooked up with some nice stuff.
The whole thing was a disaster. I felt bad for the Apple employees who had a horrible and long day on Friday and had to come back and do it again on Saturday.- scruffles, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1So you saw a line with 200 people waiting to change or upgrade their phone service and thought "I'll be in and out in 20 minutes"? You've obviously never used a PDA before.
Before I get started I do work for AT&T and love iPods so you can use the "Apple Hater" defense all you want.
Money making system? sure, if you use corporate exchange email servers and don't want to receive important business emails. I also love the fact I can only view certain documents and can't edit or save them into the phone. (BTW the MDA does)
Using maps? sure, I'd much prefer that then using a phone with REAL GPS, you know, one that actually navigates? (BTW the MDA does have GPS)
Song Finder? That software has been out for years. ATT Verizon Tmobile Sprint have it even on their cheap phones. (BTW the MDA does have it)
Phone with youtube? Yeah, REAL youtube, not a plug ins that doesn't have all the videos. (BTW the MDA does support flash so i can to the REAL youtube.com)
Email system? Blackberry have the best hands down, I don't have to buy MobileMe.com (or wait for it to work) or have to sync it with a 3rd program for it to work. (By the way the MDA can do corporate email without having to pay $30 a month or $99 a year or get Microsoft Activesync)
8gig ready? Most PDA have micro-sd cards that can take 8 gigs, plus with a software I can get all of movies, music, videos, and important files from my computer miles away from my phone without having to dock it. (BTW MDA can get sd cards and has the software)
Monkey ball? really? get a ***** gameboy.
This phone is more of a toy for a regular joe. For business Apple is still playing catch up.
By the way, the "leader of innovation" is still behind of BlackBerry in market share.

- battybattybatt, on 07/13/2008, -5/+8I'm no stranger to telling tall tales, so AT&T really comes of as having either humongous stupidity or HUGE BALLS, and most likely both. Hubris. Apple does NOT use "their" servers for ANY content, nor iPhone activations, nor iTunes, nor anything else for that matter (with the obvious excpetion of email and corporate website). What Apple does do is LEASE space on HUGE boxes called "servers". These "servers" are owned and operated by at least one company called "Akamai" at akamai.net - and they have NEVER been shut down. Not ever.
- TravisWatkins, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Akamai is for hosting static content (firmware files, apps, songs, etc). Apple has to have their own servers for the iTunes Store content, authentication, authorization, billing, etc.
- superkendall, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3The whole market was down, it's hardly surprising APple would be down as well.
Though if you think about it the stock going down because there was huge demand for the iPhone, beyond expectations for just an update, well that doesn't make a lot of sense. I sure would hold stock at least until next quarters results, they will obviously greatly exceed the 10 million target before the end of the quarter, never mind the year. - Datasta, on 07/13/2008, -2/+7Activation wasn't a problem for me. However, ever since I switched form the old iPhone to the new iPhone, I have 0 bars of service and very rarely get access to the data network. I live in New York City.
- ramsinks.com, on 07/13/2008, -3/+3Pffft. How many other sites will make it to the front page of this crappy website with the same story. FUD. Everybody pretends there is a huge issue and stocks are crashing. Stocks fluctuate everyday. When you have the most wanted item on the tech market of the day.. this cannot be a bad thing.
Nobodies going to care in a month. Yet the iPhone will still be the most sought after device in a month..
shh.
Your writers should come up with original content or at least useful. - Hax0rJimDuggan, on 07/13/2008, -4/+4Anyone want to replace Ron Burgandy with Steve Jobs in this part of the Anchorman?
Ron Burgundy: [Ron Burgundy is handed a salad with cat poop] I will *not* eat that.
Tino: You will eat that cat poop.
Ron Burgundy: I will not eat cat poop.
Tino: You will eat that cat poop before you talk about my city that way again.
Ron Burgundy: Fine, if I eat the cat poop, will you bring me a steak?
[he eats the cat poop]
Ron Burgundy: Oh, God.
Tino: Somebody get him a steak quick.
Ron Burgundy: I'll eat the whole hunk of s h i t. I don't care.
[he begins crying] - cplater, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2Not to be an apologist, but the store seemed to be up for all but activations. I spent about 4 hours trying to get my updated iPhone to activate. I think there were problems on both ends.
- flarn2006, on 07/13/2008, -2/+2*pulls out iTouch, opens NES emulator, and goes to minusworld on smb*
- CanadaMan87, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Rogers was having some difficulty as well. I got my iPhone on Saturday, but it took quite a while because some of Rogers' internal account-related systems were screwing up.
- wildsnake, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3So if Apple is the problem, why are people still standing in line for 5 hours. But I do blame Apple for not adding more servers to speed up things. MobileMe still is slow. Takes some time to load calender and address book
- waspbr, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1"why are people still standing in line for 5 hours"
because they are shallow and want to be the first ones to get the iphone so they can show it off because apple is "trendy"nowadays.
If you think that the majority determines the quality of something, then u are a sheeple urself. The majority of people are not tech savy and are just there because the iphone is a status symbol.
oh yeah, there are also the fanatics and fanboys
- waspbr, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1"why are people still standing in line for 5 hours"
- yomandude, on 07/13/2008, -6/+1SCREW THE APPLE CORPORATION! This is just conformity at its best! Large conglomerates like Apple are ruining the world by getting rid of product diversity and small businesses!
- shadedecho, on 07/13/2008, -6/+2only an iGlitch? I would say this failure to launch was a lot more than just a glitch. it was an epic iFail. it dwarfed apple and at&t's own launch failure from a year ago.
come over and share horror stories, videos, pics, etc from the crazy mess at http://www.iFail3g.com - fuzzybeard, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Is this the same thing as Bob's Glitch on ReBoot?
- moyn, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Actually, the problem was a global, not just the US. Here in London, I upgraded my 1G phone to version 2 of the software when it came out. Rather terrifyingly, the update process got as far as wiping my phone but failed repeatedly when trying to restore, so essentially my phone was dead for hours.
The good part was that I called Apple support and walked through with the level 1 agent, who said it was basically server load on their end. Since I'd had firewall config problems with my upgrade to level 1.1.4, I wasn't confident with her answer (felt she was brushing it off, and I just couldn't believe they were so consistently overwhelmed), I asked if she could put me through to level 2. Well, the cool thing is that they did without argument, and the level 2 rep spent a lot of time on the phone explaining the problems they were having themselves trying to do the upgrade, that it was load, etc. Very good quality of answers, and VERY cool that they would put me through lev 2 upon request (so many all centers today are geared to just make you go away!). So, despite the sw frustration, my apple experience was pretty good. THAT's the way to do it. - dtkeith, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1iGlitch? More like iFail!
