- snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4camera in an ipod.. shut up you knew it was going to happen. Just like the ipod will turn into a cell phone someday, and then be a pda, then it will morph into a hummer convertable.
oh yes, true story. - 1CHAMONIX, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1This is a great idea. Steve Jobs is a genius. I will buy this as soon as it comes out. So this means apple will soon take over the computer, telephone, mp3, and now the camera business and kill all the other competitors. Wow could they be taking over everything. Whats next the Ihouse. That would be pretty cool!
- clvrmnky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As one of the comments on the link said, unlikely Apple is about to release a consumer level camera, never mind a pro model. The market is too saturated.
Now, and iPod with built in camera using the tech outlined in this patent (which does not strictly have anything to do with an Apple branded camera) is more than likely.
Remember kids, solidifying your intellectual property via patents is an excellent way to generate income through licensing, or access to IP that is otherwise too pricey to reinvent or license yourself. - nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know, we really need a comment rating between +1 Useful and -1 Off Topic. There are plenty of things that are on topic but just plain stupid. How about "0 Inane?"
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey, *****.
how could I feel hurt, because a few backwater retards don't macintosh? I take no personal offence that you or your kind cant appreciate a well designed, elegant OS. It makes no difference to me. If read the entire post )you can read, can't you?) the post I made is trying to get people to stop pointlessly bashing other OSes. It doesn't accomplish anything. If you like linux, fine, if you like windows, so be it, if you like mac, good for you, but no one really cares. No one wants to hear about it, and no one is interested in your opinion, if all you have to say is "Steve Jobs stole the multi-button mouse idea from PC manufactures."
Moron. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're damned right.
- worldengine, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1No kidding on that one. I always bring my digital camera along in case of such eventualities!
http://digitalcamerablog.com/ - djtripp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is not very often that a patent come out before some thing is released. I am willing to bet this is the patent that is the built in iSight for the recent iMacs
- apersaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple will revolutionize the way people take and sync photos the way they do with music and Ipod. It would be great to have a great small camera, that can automatically unload the photos onto an Ipod, to maybe then sync it into IPhoto or Aperture....
making the experience of taking digital photos less of a hassle... (I can feel their stock going up...) - MrCalifornia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eventually they are going to have to make a cellphone/digicam/media player device because that's what everyone else will eventually do. Doubt they are going to have anything in Jan '06, but maybe they have a team working on this so that they aren't too far behind the curve when the day arrives.
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iPodPhotoCaptureEnoughAlready.
'Give the iPod love dahling...here I play you some Ricky Martin to get you in the mood...look at the iPod..chin up..(FLASH!)..you look FABULOUS!!" - aetherane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet this becomes part of the ipod
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only thing that's certain is that Apple Lemmings will by it, whatever IT is, in droves and then defend Apple'$ actions regardless of how good or bad the product turns out. There are no bad Apple products. Just misunderstood ones or ones that us dumb common folk can never understand.
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't see a camera... with the mp3 player market apple saw that there were a lot of crappy players and it could easily dominate, while the camera market is filled with top notch quality cams. more likely we'll get more computers with built in iSights.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm hoping this is for a full-blown Apple Digital SLR camera. If they're going to introduce pro-level software like Aperture, they need a camera to complement it. Not some cellphone-esque iPod built-in camera.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just miss the old quicktime camera. The first one(s) were the size of a backpack. It gets a digg just for giving me flashbacks
- flashywordz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple has already made a few cameras.. none of them were that great. why should this one be any different?
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's always been pretty obvious that all the consumer devices that store files digitally in memory would converge at some point. MP3/PDA/Phone/Camera will surely be the norm, stick on a decently viewable screen and decent battery life and it's the ultimate portable device that we'll all have in our pockets in a few yrs time. Doubt if it will be made by Apple though .......
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or what about just putting a lense on the iPod? since it already handles photos and video, now it just needs a lense and a CCD, and a data stream from the lense to the screen for a view finder.
- samwyse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, I already own a camera that senses its orientation when a picture is taken and displays it correctly on the LCD display, so how is this different?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate the argument that because they introduced Aperture a camera will surely follow, Final Cut has never ushered in an Apple DV cam...
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Apple built it from the ground up that would be impressive, rather then going to a company and slashing an Apple logo on their product.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Apple could easily bring out a new consumer digital camera and eat into the marketshare of many other companies. Sony and HP would be the most vulnerable to losing market share to Apple in this regard. However, it would probably require Apple to port iPhoto to Windows, and we don't know if they'd be willing to do that.
Although personally, I'd rather have the camera in my Motorola RAZR be ratcheted up to 3, 4, or 5 megapixels myself. I believe that is where Motorola will be heading with that line once they've released the new iTunes compatible RAZR with 32 megs of internal memory and 512 megs + expansion through the TransFlash slot.
Gawd, why couldn't the first iTunes-compatible phone have been the RAZR? - dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL @ snowboarder
- thewomble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What exactly are they patenting?
It is NOT the orientation technology: jpegs from my three year old Casio camera show orientation in the EXIF info, and Konqueror (apparently using this) auto rotates photos when necessary.
Do the comments that think this novel mean that either Windows of MacOS fails to do this? - kakurenbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As you can see at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=RE38,896.WKU.&OS=PN/RE38,896&RS=PN/RE38,896 Apple applied for this in January of 2002, and it's a reissue (update) of a patent originally filed in January of 1996, so I doubt that it has anything to do with an impending product launch.
- strestout1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the patent isn't for a camera but for a method to rotate the display on a screen...this could just as easily be better photo management on an iPod and not necessarily a camera, though a combo device might be nice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Spy-Ware free and kicks Windows rear for years!"
Spyware-free proves Mac's security is by obscurity. - ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.digg.com/apple/Expect_Powerbooks_by_January
- ebescan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this worth waiting for a new camera. If it's possible to get a digital that would be more compatible with my OS then I'll stick with my old manual.
- RedZeppelin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"hopefully they wont put an "i" infront of it and charge us $50 more"
Don't be ridiculous!
It will be $100 more. - eastcoastweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really feel that in the next few years the iPod will eventually become an all in one handheld. Video, Music, PDF, Books, Contacts, Calendar, Phone, Camera. It already does everything but the last 2... Hmmm.. :) I already want one!
- jugaaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Apple is kicking some serious Ass.
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't a Web Cam a Camera? So they may be looking to release new lines of laptops that have a webcam built in... just like the iMac.
At least that looks to be the most logical initially. They could then expand the model to include hand-held units like the AV iPod. - eastcoastweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only idiots in this world are using Windows and don't know any better! LOL Switch to a Mac and see the light. Virus Free, Spy-Ware free and kicks Windows rear for years!
After 15 years of being stupid, I left windows. - Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bet it will be called the Icamera and it's going to be white and/or black. Then all you Inerds will buy it blindly. If I were steve jobs I would come out with the Itampon just to make a million off of idiots.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/links/Behind_the_scenes_at_Apple
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't really have time to RTFA, but I know a lot of photographers and photo enthusiasts would probably dig(g) a USB2.0 adapter that would allow a digital camera/camcorder to store files directly onto a Video iPod. Maybe some kind of SD to USB cable? I dunno, maybe something like already exists.
Around 1993-95, the company I worked for purchased a bunch of Apple QuickTake 150 cameras. They were first-gen ditial and the image quality obviously sucked, but a filmless camera was a pretty cool novelty.
The really interesting thing though, is that the QuickTakes were made by Kodak. Funny, they were practically the first to release a consumer-level digital camera, but last to release any kind of successful line of them (probably due to fear of cannibalizing their film sales). - zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok, ok, enough is enough
shut the hell up.
Every OS has its faults. Every OS will charm each individual in individual ways. Frankly I'm bored of all this apple bashing. Stop being so defenisive, you microsofties. Its not a personal attack on Microsoft (or linus or whatever)that a story related to a major manufaturer about a potentialy interesting patent got dugg to the front page. just simmer down, you two. - prodigy311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, its not for a camera, it is for the new Mac Mini DVR that they are releasing this Macworld. The new mini, called the iMini will have an iSight like camera built in so you can record all of your homemade "adult" video and use playback on the iMini. It needs to be able to turn because the iMini will be able to sit flat or on its side!
- vr1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought a read somewhere recently that Apple had a patent for a camera that was integrated into a notebook computer. Maybe this is part of that. Perhaps it will be a low frame rate iSight camera for a notebook.
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey apple haters
eat it
http://digg.com/apple/iPod_update_ - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will be the 6 MegaPixel ipod nano with 16x digital zoom... right. If they do attach a camera it'll be a 1.5 MegaPixel piece of junk... what's the point?
- ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like it's for the isight they will be putting in laptops. You aren't going to see a camera in ipods.
- Zminus10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"oh and heres the new apple product the iphone mini http://mocoblog.com/wp-content//thumb-smallest.jpg"
omg, i haven't laughed this hard in a long time.. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Close the Windows, take a bite of the growing Apple.
- The_Larch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0no camera at macworld
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You have been known to just go around changing the meaning of words... so just stoppit m'kay.
