I remember Kevin Rose saying that having an mp3 player and phone in one is dumb....he said that you could waste the battery on your phone by listening to music....I agree. What happens when you actually need to use your phone in an emergency...oops, the battery's dead b/c I used it to listen to music or watch video....some things are just better left doing the thing they're good at.....on their own! My prediction is that if Apple goes ahead with this....it will flop like some of their other products....

I'm not sure what it would be, but if there's anyone who can make something cool and innovative to like a copmuter to a cell phone- it's apple.

Do you think Apple would let another company use there name on a product and not approve the design? Apple would not do that, they are do worried about having a cool design, they dot want anything to hurt the Ipod name. You know, that might actually be cool...but would there be the satisfying chkchkchkchk of the dial spinning back?
Anyway, I do think the scroll wheel interface would be especially ideal when calling people on an existing contact list (or menu of recent calls), something that most of us do most of the time, anyway...only single-button speed dial would be faster (and I'm sure something like that can be incorporated into the click wheel). - DaveHimself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got your iPod fone right here. If you read the fine script at the beginning of the movie it states that this movie is an idea made by a private studio as an example of what mac could/ should make and is in no way affiliated with it.
There is a small problem with apple having its own phone. Someone needs to be its carrier. That means Verizon, T-mobile, Sprint, etc. This will be quite unlikely to happen, even if mac does make its own phone. Why? Because these companies have seen mac take over 1 market in Less then a year, begin to create competition in 2 others.And now want to spread to another field. SO lets say Verizon Hosts MAc's phones for 5 years. At the end mac has made billions off of the incredible phone we are all waiting for. Then what. Mac (being the god it is) simply goes and builds its own carrier, using this money. Then , it controls the its own phones, and Verizon gets kicked with everyone else. (just like the Ipod)
Yes steve is crafty. but he made 1 mistake. He didn't make the deal for his new phone b4 announcing the Motorola phone. = mistake. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've been waiting for this for a long time. i don't even care if it plays mp3's, i just want a phone that plays nice with my mac programs and has the sleek design that apple would bring. the closest thing i could find is the Panasonic X800, which i had to buy from a hong kong importer because they aren't on the US market yet.

Cingular, Verizon and others all want to drive traffic through the own digital music download channels and you know an Apple phone would work with iTunes. I don't see a happy medium here unless one or all of the major carriers acknowledges (a) their current distribution methods are terrible and (b) you need to carry a phone that has the cool factor attached to anything Apple makes these days.

As for the iTunes components, I agree, they suck, but I've got a Motorola E398 (same shape as the ROKR E1) and I don't think it looks ugly at all - in fact, I think it's one of the best non-flip (God I hate those) phones, considering that it came out about 18 months ago, and supports TransFlash cards, when Nokia owners are stuck with 64mb on current generation phones.

Secondly: I predict ZERO iTunes capability. Why does everyone want Apple's phone to have an iPod built in? You know, not everything Apple makes has an iPod built in. There's no iPod keyboard, no iPod Mighty Mouse, and no iPod Cinema Display.
The phone will focus on one thing, and do it well: Voice and video chat.
Pie-in-the-sky, it will have a nano dock on it, and the two will snap together like this (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itripnano/index.php), but I doubt it. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stopher: If you use a GSM carrier, you *can* just buy any unlocked GSM phone and get a SIM from your carrier and voila, it just works.
However, buying an unlocked phone is more expensive, and carriers usually will charge you extra if you don't want a phone from them. The reason is simple: Carriers are all about lock in. They don't want to charge a fair price, they want to be able to lock you in to their service. So they subsidize the cost of the phones and lock you in. Then you're stuck with them and cannot switch away quite so easily.
Number portability is starting to change that, however, and the fact that you can keep your number and even your phone if you pay a small fee to unlock it is going to make this sort of phone subsidization unprofitable in the future. Before the ipod came out. The market was equally shared by lots of crap. Then the ipod came out and now it has, what, 70%+ marketchare. And now, theres lots of crap phones out, no one phone too much more appealing than the other. (no not even the razr, i have one and its not as amazing as it seems) So now, bam! iPhone! It will most definitly be the hot item next christmas.
