- patho, on 02/19/2008, -4/+115Wayne Westerman of Fingerworks sounds like a pornstar name to me.
- fishbert, on 02/19/2008, -1/+41anyone else wonder how the touchpad would tell the difference between an index, middle, or ring finger?
- overkilpro, on 02/19/2008, -4/+33anyone else use their ring and middle fingers to scroll instead of their index and middle fingers?
- fishbert, on 02/19/2008, -2/+29Looks interesting... but it was filed 20 days ago -- not going to appear in the next hardware refresh.
In fact, I doubt it will show up at all (in this form, anyway) for one basic reason: it's not simple enough. Apple is all about simple elegance and intuitive usability. A lot of these more advanced gestures seem like they would go against that ethos a bit much. I think much of this patent is just for patent's sake. - simplenation, on 02/19/2008, -8/+34just when you thought it couldn't get any better...
- sockpuppets, on 02/19/2008, -3/+29I keep flipping my pc off but it doesn't seem to recognize the gesture.
- Aupajo, on 02/19/2008, -0/+15Because when Apple do it, they look at it carefully and get it RIGHT. It's not always original but it is usually the best implementation.
- bigsteve, on 02/19/2008, -1/+16Aaand we have the ever-present doesn't-know-how-the-digg-algorithm-works comment. Inside twelve comments and 100 diggs, no less!
- sockpuppets, on 02/19/2008, -0/+12You both sound like my proctologist.
- mzkply, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11seriously, I could see my productivity go way up
- saturnx8, on 02/19/2008, -3/+12can you use the shocker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shocker_%28hand_gestu ... on it
- dual, on 02/19/2008, -3/+12Looks like exciting technology
- matperk, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10Well it's really only as difficult as you want it to be. From the looks of the patent, the defaults would be pretty much what's in the MacBook Air now.
- FrederikNS, on 02/19/2008, -1/+9Main problem is that a regular track-pad doesn't react to multiple touches, it only reacts to a single point being touched, making it impossible.
and also; Caps-lock is NOT cruise-control for cool. - EllimistX, on 02/19/2008, -1/+9It feels more natural that way...and I guess we're not the only ones...
- FelixdaaHack, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8minority report displays are coming....oh joy! :D
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8This will make masturbating to internet porn problematic.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6Not if you don't have all your fingers.
And I still want a gesture that looks like the Vulcan greeting. - neilhicks, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Yeah, the motions seem to look strangely sexual. Not to mention the name (Fingerworks) of the company developing it. Maybe it will be the MacBook espically for viewing porn.
- t0mt0m, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7And so it's an option to use, so for people who want advanced options can use them. Engelbart really wanted to push this kind of thing - it takes a few more minutes to learn, but you get a lot more out of it in the long run .
- Larz0rz, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7Will it be a software update?
Or is it a new kind of trackpad completely? - Veretax, on 02/19/2008, -3/+8FYI Apple didn't invent this technology, someone else did, Apple may have bought the rights to it though.
- fishbert, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Use the left... feels like someone else
- uberfu, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Compare the iPhone and the MacBook Air >> Potential future implementation in the Laptops and other products [Apple] >> with that of the Windows based Tablet PCs >> Microsoft Surface™®© >> Etc...
Like Aupajo said - Apple takes the time to do something right - whatever they do_ Microsoft bastardizes tech also - they just rush ***** out the door so they have their copy of it on the market to scrape a peice of the pie_
So far - honestly the best implementation of an y of it that I've seen has been Jeff Han's research:http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/nextfest07/jeff-han-tal ...
The funny thing is that he does have his version running on Windows_ Except that again like Apple - he took the time to do it right and make it work_ I have very rarely ever seen anything run on Windows as smoothly as Jeff's innterface_ The difference between him and Apple is that Apple is in the business to bring the functionality to the mass consumer and Jeff Han is in the business of research and development_
I could only imagine what he could do with this interface running on Unix and maybe him teaming up with Apple_ - fishbert, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4you're not talking about the proctologist, I'm guessing.
- Peavey, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Seriously kennethsteven, read what he said about the Caps lock and memorize it. Repeat it to yourself every night before going to bed.
Please. - KSUdesigner, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4And a lot of people you don't know prefer to use a trackpad over a mouse. Just because you and your friends prefer to do something one way doesn't mean that there shouldn't be a different option for everybody else.
- EelfinnTy, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4If it is similar to fingerworks previous products the entire keyboard will be the "touch pad". The only issue then is the lack of feed back from the flat keyboard. Think of an iPhone keyboard blown up full size.
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Big companies buy smaller companies many times for their intellectual property. Many times smaller companies purposely sell out to bigger companies for the payday. Apple, Microsoft, Adobe (the list goes on and on) also many times buy a company for their intellectual property for the sole intent on killing it so no one else can use it (Adobe buying Macromedia and killing half the line that competed with their own titles comes to mind). Welcome to capitalism.
- EelfinnTy, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5Sweet! it looks very similar to the fingerworks gestures, which I absolutely love. Here's to hoping they release something similar!
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Apple began using right-click commands with System 8 and just about any multi-button mouse works with Macs without drivers. It's now 2008...keep up.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3***** Aple not patenting the technology as they didn' create it.
They are patenting the use of fingers. Next thing they will do is patent the use of fingers on one finger to count to 5 !
Well I have a one finger gesture for their patent !!! - EllimistX, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3No, the choker's for the chicken in your other hand....
- MikeOSX, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4I can't wait to give my MacBook the Shocker!
- matx, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4This is for the track pad[mouse] i believe. Well I do know I use two fingers to scroll on my laptops trackpad at least.
- Peavey, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3While you are correct and I whole-heartedly agree with you, I believe that Gumby up there was referencing the fact that from 1984 until the release of the mighty mouse, Apple did not make or sell a two button mouse.
Also, (@Gumby_Mac as a rhetorical question to which the answer is yes) doesn't Apple like to include the ability to disable or enable certain features, especially those it labels as advanced? Like key commands for zooming the screen in and out, or dashboard/exposé commands? - MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Yes...I'm sure you do.
- haxderek, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4That's just weird
- omgsideburns, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2My friends call me Magnum.
It's because of my mustache. - MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Sorry, I'm fighting the flu which is making me a bit cranky. Sorry to Gumby too for the snark. I've always hated Apple's mice and replaced them as soon as was humanly possible going all the way back to the Mac Plus I bought in 1987. I use a trackball these days as my preferred pointer. Don't have to wave my hand all over the pad and it really builds up the muscles in my thumb!
- camkerr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2who says they're going to be using it?
- Peavey, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Thank you for your opinion. I don't, but since we have both made completely subjective statements there is nowhere else for this discussion to go.
End of line. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4This could open up all new kinds of interactive porn possibilities...
- Philbert, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2It's extremely rare that I use the touchpad on my laptop, my wireless mouse is always available in my laptop bag and takes up very little room. Then again as a 3D artist a mouse is pretty much required, using a touchpad would make working nearly impossible.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2There is more benefit in filing a patent just before you are going to release a product because it keeps your competition from catching up, and the patent rights will have more time to make a profit. The downside risk is if someone patents before you -- but the economic benefits are greater.
I don't think the time of patenting has any bearing on whether we will see this product sooner or later -- Apple didn't file patents on the iPod until after it shipped -- which wasn't a very good idea. - kseymore, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Better? Gross. My computer keeps asking for me to touch him.
- xoineg, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3eww
- AndrewMB, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3I hate trackpads, end of story.
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Very true. Does anyone know if MacBook/MacBook Pros that allowed the multi-touch scrolling also allow the touch sensitive gestures just put out for the Air? Don't have (or want) an Air and I'm still saving up for a MacBook Pro.
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2He would probably crap all over it and bite you. Unless you're referring to your penis in which case unless it's forked would be treated like any other single digit but most likely leave an unsightly stain. Do you spend a lot of time thinking of new ways to use your penis and if so...why?
