Apple Considering 'At a Glance' Notification on iPhone
macrumors.com — A recent patent application from Apple reveals that the company is considering adding a proper "At a Glance" notification screen for the iPhone. The proposed screen would allow users to quickly jump to the desired notification simply by pressing on the corresponding notification.

- jwdav, on 09/19/2008, -1/+27Integrated IntelliScreen would be nice ...
- ProjectGSX, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Yeah, if they pay Intelliborn to license the product. Which, somehow, I doubt is on their to-do list.
- cawpin, on 09/19/2008, -12/+2Are they ***** kidding? It doesn't do this already? Wow.
- jwdav, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4The iPhone notifies you of pending/received notifications with icon badges now - ie: you know you have 3 email messages and 2 voice mails - what this does is let you interact with the notifications from the lock screen, instead of having to unlock the phone and go to voicemail and then to email. Not quite the same thing as a simple notification.
- Harbinger1080, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5licensing what intelliscreen does would be nice... the idea of paying $20 for that buggy piece of software is ridiculous to me. it's incredibly useful, but not worth what they're charging, especially since it's something that (clearly) should be integrated.
still, any developer who write programs 'illegally' for the phone that can only work in a jailbroken environment should consider that apple may build in their functionality.- jdoo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3The basic version is $5. I got the full version and think it is more than worth the price. Which bugs are you talking about?
- fr34k5h0w, on 09/19/2008, -1/+3There's hacks for it to get around the licensing scheme, or so I hear.
- Harbinger1080, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2@jdoo
i was referring to the SWOD many get after installing, and then there's the recent crashing of springboard, and there have ALWAYS been random crash issues.
i'm not arguing that it's not incredibly useful, because it is (i use it myself), but it is not worth $20, imo. this isn't possible because of apple's app restrictions, but if i shell out $20 for an app, waiting a week to be able to use it after a firmware update/successful jailbreak, only to become a paying beta tester is simply not acceptable.

- Revolution101, on 09/19/2008, -9/+2As an early adopter of both gen's of iPhone, I can safely say. Keep dreaming man.
- miakeru, on 09/19/2008, -1/+18And buying both iPhones early makes you more capable to speculate on something like this than anyone else, because why?
- Elranzer, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5Proves his douchiness.
- Sherman901, on 09/19/2008, -10/+5i really don't have any problem with not having copy and paste or a widescreen keyboard
- lex0nyc, on 09/19/2008, -3/+5Well, aren't you special...
- Sherman901, on 09/19/2008, -3/+5apparently so, i'm getting dugg down for being different
- Turbojugend27, on 09/19/2008, -8/+4why in the ***** do people want copy and paste so bad? I remember having on my blackberry, it was such a pain in the ass I never used it anyway.
BUY a ***** video camera if you want video recording. the camera sucks so bad on it for regular pictures anyway- Minivolt, on 09/19/2008, -6/+1I will try to explain to you.
When you come across this in safari: boobies!!! go to w ww.thelongesturlinthewholeworld.com and you can't click on it. Good luck typing this in the address bar! - Shelby69, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5There were no boobies at that address :(
- sint4x, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Yes, its sucks on the blackberry because you have to go through about 7 menus to copy something.
Apple innovates, remember? I'm sure they can make it easy. Hold finger and drag??
- Minivolt, on 09/19/2008, -6/+1I will try to explain to you.
- phatphil, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5I would kill for a widescreen keyboard in Mail right now.

- Sonan, on 09/19/2008, -3/+43Wait, how can they get a patent for something other phones have been doing for years? And why don't they have such a simple, obvious feature already?
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5It's a patent "application" right?
- Sonan, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5Ok, then what makes them think they can get a patent for something other phones have been doing for years?
- digjam, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Because Steve jobs thinks you dont need it.
- Elranzer, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2Just like buttons. And games.
- Canuck, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5There are a lot of things the iPhone doesn't have that you would think would be obvious. Especially considering it is suppose to be a media player. The list includes MMS, Video capture, Online TV, Bluetooth stereo headphones, affordable pricing etc.
- nxtwrld, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1They file patent to sue the guy that first thought of it, but thought it too obvious to patent it.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5It's a patent "application" right?
- then00b, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5This would be nice to have for sure, but I've hardly been clamoring for this.
- TehDoctor, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Jailbreak. Been there since day one.
edit:
Eek, those ***** are charging for it now. I hate how the homebrew jailbreak community has gone to ***** like this, and without the GPL'd efforts of the dev team these leeches would be nowhere.

Hopefully Apple does the right thing and licenses their application.- badgadjit1, on 09/19/2008, -2/+4and i have it. haha. hmm....i wonder where apple came up with the idea. lol
- adriandb, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3While I love Intelliscreen, I hope Apple comes up with their own, more elegant, solution.
- sprint84, on 09/19/2008, -0/+16"Boom! We are doing this the way no one has ever done before"
Foreseing next MacWorld- badtzmartin, on 09/19/2008, -3/+5I own a 3G, and used to own a WinMo device. Windows Mobile has ALWAYS had this...

- badtzmartin, on 09/19/2008, -3/+5I own a 3G, and used to own a WinMo device. Windows Mobile has ALWAYS had this...
- FutureGuy, on 09/19/2008, -6/+11If this was MS all hell would have broken loose.
- santaliqueur, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4You act like there's no hate for Apple here.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/19/2008, -3/+5The thing is there's nothing wrong per se; Apple are just fickle for UI. The UI is already good, they want to make it better. This has nothing to do with Microsoft.
- MadKennyP, on 09/19/2008, -0/+8This would be nice. Apple needs to do something to fix the reminder notifications anyway. The text only displays a portion of the reminder and it disappears if you unlock your iPhone. There should be a way to click and get to all the details or to select an option to "remind me later."
- Spure, on 09/19/2008, -8/+0The xbox 360 controller does this with their notifications.
- santaliqueur, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Perhaps I should start using the Xbox 360 controller for a phone.
- bernstein07, on 09/19/2008, -7/+4Screw this I want me some Android! google as brainwashed me.
- kishosingh, on 09/19/2008, -4/+1But 2.1 application has some negativity also.

- BrendanSheehan, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Swipe up on the homescreen to get quick access to data switches: WiFi, Egde, 3G and Bluetooth. That's what I want!

- RyeBrye, on 09/19/2008, -0/+10Growl on the iPhone?
- sprint84, on 09/19/2008, -2/+4THAT would be awesome!
- RonMexic0, on 09/19/2008, -7/+3So in other words you mean having pretty icons isn't as functional as, oh I don't know . . . pretty much every other smartphone's default screen? Surely those other companies haven't adopted this form of presentation over the years because of prior experience and feedback or anything.
- njren78, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11Three things: 1- Allow users to display upcoming calendar events on this screen. 2- Allow third-party developers to include their own alerts on this screen. 3- Allow users to customize what is seen on this screen (which alerts, calendar items, unread mail messages, etc). I'm not sure why they have registered for a patent, however, since WinMobile has been doing something similar for years now.
- gospe1337, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11Yeah, I have to say the home screen is pretty useless.
- Krissam, on 09/19/2008, -2/+4WTB: Patent free world.
- jjustin01, on 09/19/2008, -1/+19I am so gonna get dugg down for this:
Apple seems to be taking the same road as Adobe. Instead of fixing the problems everyone bitches about (I know Apple patched a number of bugs in 2.1, but there are still a number of problems that exist.), or adding the features users really want and care about, they keep adding ***** no one really asked for.
Although, this is a pretty cool feature.- adriandb, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2I think this is a feature many people have been asking for. Anyone coming from a previous smart phone (palm OS or WinMo) has been missing this functionality.
- rrife, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11So they patented a "today" screen? Heck, I need to patent an interface that will indicate to the end-user the number of unread emails in relation to the number of read emails.
- lhughey, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Exactly. The same today screen that Windows Mobile has been doing for at least 5 years. I dont have a problem with Apple implementing it, because its a great feature, but to patent it is silly.
- RyomaNagare, on 09/19/2008, -1/+3We who bitch about this features, already have an iphone, thouse who bitch about them saying, "if only it had this fatures, i'd get it," Would not get it anyway.
I believe, video recording will eventually come to the iphone, as well as a better camera, full bluetooth, and copy paste.
but will have to pay a premium yet again.
Thats the way apple does things.
That said this is estandrad practice on mobile companies, the W810i released 2006 from SE, claimed to have full BT 2.1, but still lacked AD2P, if you search in google, for the oficial SE forum, regarding this issue, there was no hardware constraint, that kept sony from adding it, the fact was that it got released with the next gen phones which btw downgraded the camera, if you wanted the phone and BT functionality you had to wait for the next gen. and thats how things work. - digjam, on 09/19/2008, -2/+8For Gods sake give us the basic functionalities first.... instead of giving some stupid features... where the hell are Bluetooth profiles? Software hardware switches for Wifi/3G ? Background services? I really dont care about copy paste but yeah thats basic feature too....
if you are selling it as a "breakthrough" device... you gotta put in some basic features every other phone has .... I hate to see the stubborness of this guy..
I think this is where MS takes the cake.. they do the basic features well and then let the 3rd partoes develop the advanced features...If its a internet connected wifi enabled devce...I want to see the shared drives on my network etc....this is just plain ridiculous.- d03boy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1I guess that's where building on top of a linux kernel, such as Gphone, comes into play
- wdunay3, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3I love Apple, don't get me wrong, but why wasn't this in the 1.1 or ever the 2.0 iPhone release! Most smartphone on the market already have this feature. Nokia and Windows Mobile phones come to mind right away.
- iheartrendering, on 09/19/2008, -2/+6FECES! feces! FeCeS! fEcEs!
- meghalc, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Where is the Calendar? Most students or business people would prefer a calendar...I got a Curve just for this feature (today screen) compared to the Iphone.
- cdbarlow, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1I called it and a man answered and just kept foolishly saying hello while I was on mute laughing. Haha. I'm evil.
- cloudcity, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4Forget copy and paste, this is the feature I really need...
My old Nokia 6682 had this feature, and it was nice for seeing upcoming appointments.
This and a solid turn-by-turn GPS app (preferably from TomTom) are about all I really need to make my iPhone the ultimate all in one.
Bluetooth keyboard support would be nice as well. A better camera too, but now we are talking about hardware requests... - galv0, on 09/19/2008, -0/+9Wait.. the iPhone doesn't have this? The more and more I find out about this thing, the more and more I realize how hyped up it is.
- pcpimpster, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2My gotcha for the iPhone was flash support in the browser.
A real browser for a mobile phone.
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13761
Glad i didnt get one, would have been greatly disappointed my shiny new iphone couldnt watch a flash video embedded in a web page.
This browser works great and will keep me on the windows mobile OS for another couple years.
- pcpimpster, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2My gotcha for the iPhone was flash support in the browser.
- njhardc0re, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1I don't get it, wtf is this?
- DomZy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1When the phone is locked, it just shows how many unread sms, emails, etc (and presumably 3rd party apps can add notifcations).
Nothing too exciting, but it means the push notification thing Steve introduced a while back is probably coming in the next software update, which means better apps. - d03boy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1more like "why should anyone give a damn?"
- njhardc0re, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1it's a waste, if I want to check stuff I am looking at my phone for a reason and therefore will be unlocking it anyway. dumb.
- DomZy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1When the phone is locked, it just shows how many unread sms, emails, etc (and presumably 3rd party apps can add notifcations).
- blergle, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Um.. Windows Mobile 'Today' screen has been doing this since, forever.
What I want is copypasta! And stop wiping application data when I install an update..!! - vectorb, on 09/19/2008, -0/+0Thats great and all Apple, but can you just fix it so that I can send and receive freakin picture messages already?! I mean seriously, the most disappointing lack of feature.
