Apple CEO Never Liked Buttons, Not Even on His Shirts
online.wsj.com — Buttons have long been a hot-button issue for Apple's CEO. While many technology companies load their products up with buttons, Steve Jobs treats them as blemishes that add complexity and hinder their clean aesthetics.

Ahhh, cause now I don't look weird at all...but hey, at least I have no buttons.- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28I read somewhere that jobs wore a black turtleneck as it doesn't distract from his presentations and he can blend into the background. - sacr3dc0w, on 10/10/2007, -10/+94Make Steve Jobs the president, at least you know he won't press the nuke button.
/sarcasm, please for the love of god don't make that guy president.- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -10/+18President of Apple Computers Steve Jobs began his hi-tech career at Atari. He was known to walk around barefoot, kick up his dirty feet on executives' desks, and talk continuously about going to India to meet a guru. Not only did he do the latter, he designed Breakout before leaving Atari for good.
This story is much more intriguing than that. Bushnell assigned Steve Jobs to design the circuitry for Breakout, but it was too difficult for Jobs. He asked his friend (and Apple co-founder) Steve Wozniak to help, and promised to split the payment from Bushnell. Wozniak did it in four days and was paid $350. But it turned out that Bushnell actually paid $5,000 for Breakout -- Jobs pocketed the remaining $4,650.
Ironically, Wozniak's design was so complex that no one at Atari could figure out how it worked. They had to redesign the entire game so it could be tested.- LethalAmbition, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15wtf?

- SanTe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It is also, if I recall correctly, in Wozniak's recent book "iWoz." (Good read, by the way.) Wozniak claims he harbors no ill will towards Jobs (and never did) for ripping him off.

and then I dont have to look for an hour for the buttons!- harshbarj, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Because a 6 button remote can't do everything a 40 button one can. In order to makeup for the loss of buttons you have to navigate menus and sub-menus. I'd rather just hit the eject button than try to find it in a menu. Sleek looks yes, improved functionality no.

- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They're probably not heat activated, chances are it measures capacitance across your fingers and act accordingly, sort of like a really stupid touchscreen.

- twmsdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nope. Certain LG screens, and maybe others, have HEAT-activated buttons. When I try to turn on my monitor with cold hands I can't get it to work. All my friends/family are amazed by the heat sensitive buttons. Cool stuff.

- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -4/+47That explains the one button mice.....
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5There's 2 buttons (for the mighty mouse at least), it just looks, and feels like one.
- natenovs, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2and works like one...
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It doesn't work like one, it senses which side of the mouse you push, but they are pretty obnoxious to use. Every time you click (right or left) both sides of the mouse go down. It's pretty irritating when you're used to a normal 2 button mouse.
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3It took Apple 20 friggen years to get a two button mouse, however. And the laptops still have only one button.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4It took them twenty years to figure out how to ship one mouse that could be used either as a single button or two buttons. Not a small technical accomplishment.
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7They could have just...you know...made a two button mouse.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9If you click the button with two fingers on the trackpad, it right clicks and i personally prefer this approach by a mile. It doesn't matter where you hit the button this way and you don't have to take your eyes off the screen

- tdowling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You can set the trackpad to give you a right-click when you tap it with two fingers instead of one. It's a lot less awkward than holding two fingers on the pad and then clicking the button.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I find that i sometimes set it off when i'm trying to two finger scroll. I would love to see some stats on who has trackpad clicking turned off and who prefers it turned on as i bet it's exactly 50-50 :)
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4It took them twenty years to figure out how to ship one mouse that could be used either as a single button or two buttons. Not a small technical accomplishment.
- celkin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1To right-click on a Macbook, either tap the trackpad with two fingers close together or put two fingers on the trackpad and click the big button. To scroll, move two fingers across the trackpad.
- natenovs, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2and works like one...
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I'm using the mighty mouse now and it actually has 4 buttons. right and left clicks, and you can click the ball, and you can squeeze the sides for a 4th click function. all in all it sucks compared to any razer, logitech, or even microsoft multibutton mouse.
- sp1keNARF, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I agree, I use the bluetooth mighty mouse with my macbook, and it pretty much sucks compared to the logitch stuff i've used in the past. if your finger is resting on the left click area, the right click won't register. the side buttons are pretty crappy too. the mini-roller ball thing is pretty cool though. it allows you to scroll around documents easier than any other mouse i've used.
- SlpingInsomniac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The idea of the one button mouse is that you don't need two buttons in the OS. You can do everything that you could do with two buttons another way, unlike microsoft.

- ScrumFritter, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5That quote about the slide showing the Apple remote and all those other remotes underlining exactly what Apple is all about is true - that perfectly sums up Apple to me.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Sums it up for me too: Apple is good for simple people who don't want to be overwhelmed with options.
But not for me. I would go nuts using Apple's remote. I'm not a fanboy, but I use the Microsoft media center remote and everyday I enjoy one button to go straight to my recorded TV shows, or to the guide, or to the main menu. I also like having two buttons each for FFW/RW, one set jumps ahead 30 seconds or back 5 seconds at a time (great for skipping commercials and jumping back if you overshoot) the other set for scanning forward or backwards at multiple speeds (great for finding a particular scene or zooming though to the end of a long program). For me, the more buttons the better.
I would be insulted if I were an Apple user. How dumb does Jobs thing his customers are not to be able to handle a few buttons to make things faster and easier?

And no, the mighty mouse's invisible buttons don't count. If anything they're more confusing since you don't realize a button's there unless you configured it in the settings. Who wants to do that?

The only way to surf the intertubes! - bpmox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1He's right you know, function comes first.
- nav1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3As someone who has and constantly uses a Mighty Mouse, I have to say I agree. Yes, there's a secondary function if you click with the finger on the right, but you have to click with ONLY that finger on the mouse, if you leave the index finger on the left side, it interprets it as a left click. Needless to say, it's very confusing and frustrating, specially since even when right-clicking with only one finger is sometimes interpreted as a left click. And the whole pressure-button thingie is stupid, you have to re-arrange your fingers in order to press it with the required force, which is not intuitive at all.
But, the scroll ball is awesome, and I wish my mouse at work had something like it. Plus, clicking it does work all the time very smoothly. But, I guess other mice have a similar ball.- DeezKnots, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I have a mighty mouse and feel the same. - TheFlood16, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Is that why for years Apple's computer mouse only had 1 button?
- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9That is because Apple's interface was designed to work with only 1 button. The only people who complained for a long time were Window (and even worse Unix/X11) users who were used to having to press multiple buttons to do everything. Even now OS X can be operated fine with just 1 button, although the 2nd does come in handy for more advanced users.
- pak314, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6If it was designed for one button then why the need for CTRL, OPTION and SHIFT modifiers?
- ejm508, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You don't. Those are just shortcuts for stuff that can be done other ways
Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of the single button mouse, even though I use a Mac- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm with you. Still supporting 'legacy' hardware such as keyboards and mice, but more actively supporting voice input and MultiTouch input.
After using an iPhone - a 24" iMac multitouch screen would be amazing!
(Add multitouch to the cinema displays too...)- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7There was a fantastic article over at daringfireball about how much of a pain in the arse multitouch screens would be. The article basically said, fully outstrech your arm, put your finger at the top of the screen, the bottom of the screen, the left of the screen and the right of the screen.
Repeat fifty times and see how much your arm hurts.- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, I believe that when Apple implement multitouch to their computer, they won't just make the screens multitouch and leave it like that. For example, Apple has a number of patents revolving a dual screen kind of technology, similar to the Nintendo DS, but with multitouch.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Voice input is a great idea, but I've never seen it done well. Unless you count science fiction. If you could somehow couple it with natural-language processing, fine. "Computer, e-mail Fred and ask him if he wants to have brunch on Saturday." But the whole "Open e-mail, new message, fred at gee mail dot com, tab, tab, dear Fred" mess is just annoying.
- opusaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I programmed a touchscreen kiosk application a few years ago, so I had a touchscreen running Windows on my desk for most of that time. I have to say I got used to navigating with the touchscreen. Of course the keyboard and mouse are better for most usages, but depending on how you are currently sitting, and what you're doing, a touchscreen really comes in handy. I'd often be fidgeting with a pencil and unconsciously use the eraser end to click hyperlinks, or open emails, simple stuff like that. I still miss it.

- Aokami, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I like the idea that you design products to meet an adaptable market. Setting a clear design precident and having confidence that the project is solid enough to stir human adaptivity and interaction is pretty cool. - mrhaines, on 10/10/2007, -8/+9Buttons are confusing? Maybe for Homer Simpson. Where is the "any" key?
For normal human beings, buttons quickly move frome being confusing to increasing efficiency. I for one am glad I do not have to flip to another "virtual" keyboard on my phone every time I want to type a period. For an animated presentation of this argument, see the following short film:

"If you're a wonk and you want lots of controls and features, Microsoft is right for you," Mr. Kay says. "If you want a simple experience and you're not tech-savvy, then you'll probably do better with Apple.""
Not-tech-savvy = Less butons? Sounds like wonderfully legit reason.- lerker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd just like to know what a "wonk" is...
- jimbojim, on 10/10/2007, -11/+7An article about how Steve Jobs dislikes buttons just made the front page. ARE YOU ***** KIDDING ME?
- mandarin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Thats nothing, yesterday all the tv news channels at primetime was reporting on Lindsay Lohan...
- bobbyi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yes, I'm ***** kidding you.
- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is actually important. Do you know how many things have been influenced by steve jobs dislike of buttons? How about the iPod, the Personal Computer, iPhone.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14No buttons on the elevator? That's just retarded.
- ivosilva, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Yeah, but can he open a bra?
- kstamour, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Black Turtle Neck with Zipper?....errr?
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Turtle necks dont have buttons!
- zachninme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What exactly the difference between a button-keyboard, and a touch one?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Buttons
- rodii, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0ha ha!
- zachninme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Ahhh... explains my childhood!
- bobbyi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1One of them requires you to stare at it while typing.

- SyDIGG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Doesn't he wears Levis 501 button-fly jeans?
- dontbelievehype, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Form *follows* function Steve.
This is why I would never buy an apple product. I buy art for aesthetics. I buy an MP3 player to listen to music. Why would anybody possibly care what their phone or MP3 player looks like?- Skye16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As you stated, the phrase is "form *follows* function, implying that while function is key, form is also an extremely important piece in the puzzle.
I want my gadgets to look good, but I admit, it is far more important to me that they *work* well.
I, for one, feel the iPhone does not. But then again, I'm the kind of person who buys a phone solely to text, IM, or email. Everything else is superfluous - especially music.
- Skye16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As you stated, the phrase is "form *follows* function, implying that while function is key, form is also an extremely important piece in the puzzle.
- Ndric, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4I always knew he was homosexual
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3is that why he has a wife and you cant even get a girlfriend?
- ibone, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0He may not like buttons, but im sure he has never seen a brown eye he didnt like... ;)
- ibone, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Those turtlenecks he wears sure are pleasing to the eye.....
pfffff. - missingnoh4x, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Extra buttons can never hurt. I've always found that single button mouse terrible. No scroll wheel, no right-click...
- phrantakle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hell yes, diggs for you! "You just need to press function+ctrl+shift+d+6+return, I honestly don't see how it could be any easier, I mean in terms of aesthetics I don't see how you could surpass the sheer genius of single click, I personally cream myself every time I touch an apple product, blah blah blah"
- Neilyos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1that explains the animosity towards that never-gonna-have-it 2nd mouse button.
- omenmedia, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1From the article:

"Steve Jobs unveiling an Apple remote control (center) in San Jose, Calif., in 2005."
Uhhh, correct me please if I'm wrong, but isn't that a first gen iPod shuffle?- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5no...
- ericisroot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2So when do the voice recognition macs come out. I can't wait for it!
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Right about....now
System Preferences > Speech > Voice Recognition- lobbster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1vista is much better
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple haven't really developed it too much but i does anyone remember the "Dear aunt, let's set so double the killer delete select all" incident? I think i need a bit more convincing.
- lobbster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1vista is much better
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Right about....now
- rouslan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is what I don't like about apple-I prefer my hardware to have features such as extra DVD drives/card readers and status lights. And I'm a Linux user, so don't criticize me thinking I'm a m$ fanboy.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Buy an external card reader or external DVD drive and put it in an enclosure or slot it into a Mac pro, then download iStat menus. Sorted.
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apple should buy Logitech. They make good mice. Steve Jobs may not like 2 buttons, but I don;t like that piece of ***** mighty mouse. The mighty mouse might be the only Apple product that I think is garbage (after having bought one). I appreciate wanting to improve on it, though. I didn't think you could beat the old walkman setup, but the click wheel did it.
- neonrehan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3funny...As I started playing the video, an iPhone commercial immediately came on the nearby television. Apple, kudos to your mysterious marketing powers.
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, people wonder why every body knows about it. :(

- timissimit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0thank god he hates buttons, otherwise all of the apple stuff wouldn't look so sexy!
- kaylavy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Buttons are cute but my Iphone is sexxier!
- lobbster, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1i cant wait till steve dies
- Zammie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1buttons fly out and attack you, when you're on LSD!
