- phenomnaruto, on 01/15/2008, -14/+124I remember when there was a story on digg about Vista and Windows home servers and people were insulting the idea and were saying that no one would ever want a home server, BUT NOW APPLE IS DOING IT AND ITS A FANTASTIC INNOVATIVE IDEA ...
i cant wait to buy 3 ;) - edcrosay, on 01/15/2008, -4/+72That's not bad. I already have 2 wireless routers with USB HDD support. It would be nice if they would allow people to use what they already have.
- Chirp08, on 01/15/2008, -8/+70Between this, and the new Apple TV it seems like Apple actually listened to its customers demands. The 30-days after the DVD release thing is kinda annoying, but that is deffinately put in place by the studios so they can sell more dvds. They would rather have you buy it and find out it sucks, then rent it and find out it sucks. Time capsule is nice too for those of us who only use laptops and never sit at a desk unless absolutely necessary.
- zachriggle, on 01/15/2008, -5/+63The only similar device (http://tinyurl.com/2bu4so) with 1TB of storage and built-in WiFi (without printer sharing, router functionality, and 802.11N) costs the same. Not to mention that it's gargantuan in comparison.
Bravo Apple, Bravo. - diggymow, on 01/15/2008, -8/+51Where is the bury Gizmodo button?
- Timmymna, on 01/15/2008, -5/+42$500 for 1TB is pretty good pricing with wireless and ethernet
- Mookeh, on 01/15/2008, -9/+39Now finally I have a way to use Time Machine properly with my laptop. Thanks, Apple.
- samuelcotterall, on 01/15/2008, -2/+30Is that strictly a "home server"? More of a NAS/Router.
- xaxxon, on 01/15/2008, -6/+29why do I have to pay for this? I already have a base station with airdisk and an external hard drive.
*****. - pyrates, on 01/15/2008, -1/+24Now we know why Apple disabled wifi syncing with time machine. So they can sell another product instead of allowing us to just attach a hard drive to the apple router. In fact the ideal solution would be to use smb/nfs file sharing on the wifi router with a builtin usb port for external storage, then windows, os x, and linux can all backup to it. And again you are paying a premium for this. And server made hard drives are just hard drives that have been more thoroughly tested is all.
- peestandingup, on 01/15/2008, -4/+26There is still no excuse why they couldn't just make the current AP Extreme + AirDisk work the same way. Obviously, people are already doing just that with a hack.
Plus, what if you run outta space with those Time capsules?? Theres no room to upgrade. Oh well. - oper8r00, on 01/15/2008, -0/+22So what does this say for people who bought an airport extreme on the premise that Time Machine would sync to a USB hard drive connected to it.
- Raian, on 01/15/2008, -1/+21or human beings into hermits...
- Chirp08, on 01/15/2008, -1/+19where do I buy the "flawless integration" and "plug and play setup" ?
- Raian, on 01/15/2008, -1/+19Hmm wonder if they are going to support their older airport extreme base-stations.... Please don't dick us on this one Steve!
- allrecordsalex, on 01/15/2008, -4/+19did anyone notice the press release said Apple's entire notebook line - the macbook, macbook pro and new macbook air? i guess thats enough confirmation anyone needs
- HappyScrappy, on 01/15/2008, -6/+21I already paid for an Airport Extreme GigE and attached a USB hard drive. Problem is, the software sucks. Apple's solution is for me to now pay them $500 more to have a solution that works right?
- codyman, on 01/15/2008, -1/+14can I just put an external hd in my Delorean instead of shelling out big ones for "time capsule"?
- stalefries, on 01/15/2008, -0/+13Chances are that they will, but Steve wouldn't announce that, so that the focus stays on the product and not the feature.
- Urkel, on 01/15/2008, -6/+19I'm not trying to be a jerk, but is this really a result of "listening to the customer"? Apple looking out for the customer would result in a solution that isn't solved by buying proprietary software.
TimeCapsule:
Customers want to back up to network drive. Apple blocks feature and releases Time Capsule which is essentially a proprietary Apple branded drive that costs $100+ more than competitors
AppleTV:
Customers want more variety in video compatibility. Apple blocks all codecs other than their own and offers rentals that aren't necessarily that cheap.
Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy that ANY solution was made. But let's not pretend this is a result of Apple listening to customers. - aduzik, on 01/15/2008, -1/+13Actually, the 500 GB Time Capsule is a really good deal when you consider you get a 500 GB NAS device, 802.11n router and gigabit ethernet switch all in one device.
- ghaltmann, on 01/15/2008, -10/+22That's great pricing for just the hard drives alone. This is very tasty. I'm glad Apple is getting more into home networking. It was becoming a mess.
- MacParrot, on 01/15/2008, -1/+13Network Attached Storage isn't easy. File management problems can easily arise as well for those that aren't well connected with the technology. Depending on how Apple worked the interface, this could be a solution for those that either don't want to or can't figure out all the Ps and Qs. If it isn't something you're interested in fine, don't don't piss in the cornflakes for those that wants something easy to use. Get over it.
- MacEnvy, on 01/15/2008, -5/+17Want a general-use small home server? Fine, buy whatever commodity junk you want. Want an Airport base station with a NAS built in, that can use 802.11n wireless to automatically backup multiple computers with software that is fully integrated into the OS? You'll need to get a Time Capsule.
Why is this so hard to understand? - Ramble, on 01/15/2008, -5/+16Vista has umm..shadow copy? The same idea, just thought of and implemented a few years earlier?
- Warblade, on 01/15/2008, -1/+12What are you talking about? There were a lot of people who also praised Microsoft's home sever idea, just like you're going to see people whine about Time Capsule. If anything Windows home server is "better", IMO, than TimeCapsule. Then again that's not really a fair comparison since they are different products. Home Server is more of a real server where as TimeCapsule is just a hard drive attached to a router.
I'll probably buy Time Capsule since I can fit it in a closet and it'll do what I need it to do. For $299 its hard to turn that down.
I just hope Apple ends up supporting Time Machine on existing Apple base stations with a USB hard drive attached. I don't see why they can't do that since Time Capsule is essentially that. - kee440, on 01/15/2008, -0/+11Can we actually store files on it and stuff? Or is it just for backup?
- MioTheGreat, on 01/15/2008, -1/+11WHS will store incremental backups of all your PC's files, not storing duplicates for things like system files, for a large number of points in time, allowing you to restore to any one of them.
On top of that, Windows has had Volume Shadow Copies for longer than OSX has had Time Machine (Windows XP had a VSS thing, but it was only useful for backup utils that didn't want to deal with file locking. It wasn't until Server 2003 and Vista that it was used for Previous Versions) - djpants428, on 01/15/2008, -0/+10no one makes 1TB 2.5" drives, they're clearly going to be using 3.5" drives.
- Warblade, on 01/15/2008, -2/+12Are you new to Apple or something? You can say that about pretty much every product they've released.
"Wow, they made a [phone | Operating system | computer | MP3 player]"
It's not WHAT they release, its how they integrate it into their entire system that makes them so good. - fhsieh, on 01/15/2008, -2/+12Picture must be inaccurate. Either a single 500gb drive or a single 1tb drive. The biggest flaw is that there is no possibility for RAID, and that completely nullifies "backup" as marketing. Unless they're using 2.5" drives in 2x 250gb or 2x 500gb configs (with the latest 500gb laptop HDDs); but those aren't "Server Grade", and under RAID-1 only truly offer 250gb or 500gb storage.
HP MediaSmart offers 4-drive RAID, albeit more expensive (and WHS supports Apple backups too). But while $299 for 500gb+wifi seems aggresive (compared to HP's $599), I can get a bare 500gb drive for $99 and a $30 single-drive NAS enclosure off of Newegg for the same functionality. - shieldss, on 01/15/2008, -0/+10My thoughts exactly. I bought and APE before Leopard came out for this specific use because that was one of the features they advertised. Then, it disappeared upon release.
- jakem1, on 01/16/2008, -0/+10Yeah, thanks for making people buy another Apple product rather than just correcting Time Machine so it works with Airport Express.
- soopafly, on 01/15/2008, -2/+11Um.. well you don't have to pay for it.
- ryyguy, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9It is just an airport extreme with internal harddrives, so yes heifetz, you can store anything you want. Mac's and PC's can use the disk remotely, it looks just like any other network share. And for those wondering why apple would 'dare do this' to people who purchased the original AE, the problem with the previous version is they depend on the USB disk to write the data to the drive - there is no way for the base station to KNOW the data was really written. This caused problems with Time Machine as it thought data had been written, and when users went to access it the base station discovered the disk had not written it yet due to write-behind caching, and users were getting corrupted data and crashed base stations.
- FunkyELF, on 01/15/2008, -2/+11Yawn....wake me up when this thing runs ZFS and deal with bit-rot and provide end to end data integrity.
- WinGeek, on 10/15/2008, -6/+14Looks cool but I am not sure about the "server grade" hard drives. Sounds like marketing talk. This device clearly uses 2.5" laptop hard drives because of its size. I don't know of any server that would every use 2.5" laptop hard drives.
Even if the hard drives are not perfect, any backup is better than no backup. - dcronin90, on 01/15/2008, -6/+14Wow! The prices don't look so bad!
Finally a product from Apple where I don't pay for the logo? - michaelb1, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10I'm not trying to be a jerk either but I will take proprientary any day over OSS if its easy, worry free, and works really well. My Honda is proprietary and it never breaks. I like FOSS for it's price and innovation but there is something to be said for well crafted hardware and software that does exactly what I need it to. Buying ATV Take 2 and Time Capsule ASAP.
- UGM2099, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10You go girl!
- node3, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9Who called Time Capsule "innovative"?
You know you're paranoid/delusional when you start to see fanboyism where none exists. "Oh noes! They're praising Apple as the premier innovator for something MS came out with a year ago which they mocked!!!" When in fact, no one is calling it innovative, and people *did* not only *say good things* about MS's home server, but wished Apple would make one too! - michaelb1, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10and wireless AP (n).
- Firehed, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9Nobody cares!
- michaelb1, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10If you do deductions on your taxes you can add the price of your first Airport Extreme.
Just label it as "Costs incurred from living in a consumer culture where new ***** is always coming out" - signal15, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9Yeah, but the Airport Extreme still doesn't officially support backups. You can make it work using a "defaults write" command to enable sharing to unsupported network drives though.
It kind of makes you wonder if they did this to sell more time capsules. - GoingPostal, on 01/15/2008, -11/+18Are they copying the Microsoft Home Server?
- MacParrot, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7I'll agree with that. I have the original Airport Extreme with 802.11n and I hope it will be upwards compatible. We'll see.
- LanceUppercut, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7Googling it now. Thanks for letting me know there is a hack :)
I can't understand why they couldn't get this to work with the airport extreme. - deadbaby, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6NAS devices are incredibly overpriced. It's actually hard to find a decent 500GB NAS for $300 without a router built in. (802.11n no less)
- jtcalhoun, on 01/15/2008, -1/+7"Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."
