- autoy, on 02/24/2009, -39/+469I don't care if you are using firefox, let's talk about Safari because that's what this news is about. I think the Windows version is spot on this time, lots of new interesting features and yes, it feels fast. Worth a try at least.
- theblueprint, on 02/24/2009, -20/+283I use Safari exclusively and (IMO) it's the best browser for OS X.
That said, I'll believe the performance gains when I see some independent benchmarks. - gavinhudson, on 02/24/2009, -112/+369Safari is fast, but I still use Firefox most of the time.
- atgmac, on 02/24/2009, -13/+216I know I'm going to get buried for this but I'll say it anyway. Firefox is a good *browser* but it's not a good *application*. It may have performance and extensibility but it lacks any kind of integration with the OS. It doesn't even use native widgets (scroll bars in popup menus, wtf?!).
Safari uses the system spell checker, it supports the system inline dictionary/thesaurus, it uses the system address book to do form autofill, etc. Firefox feels like a windows application in this regard. - jdames1980, on 02/24/2009, -6/+193It passes the Acid 3 test!
- deadapostle, on 02/24/2009, -7/+170It's fast, but it's no Netscape Navigator.
- mikemx7f, on 02/24/2009, -0/+160specialK16, that makes absolutely no sense in this context.
- MrMinit, on 02/24/2009, -17/+162Wow, some fancypancy ***** here. I will give it a try.
- Innuendo24, on 02/24/2009, -9/+148My eyes just got market-speak-raped by that description.
- LeviTheSmith, on 02/24/2009, -4/+120Something went wrong!
http://i42.tinypic.com/30bjned.png - eatrains, on 02/24/2009, -2/+109Just like Firefox, Safari does not come with AdBlock. Just like Firefox, Safari supports AdBlock as an add-on.
- Kragnerac, on 02/24/2009, -8/+89Using it on Windows 7. It's freaking awesome. Cover Flow for bookmarks was perhaps the best idea yet.
- raydeen, on 02/24/2009, -17/+91Frankly, I want my web browser about as far removed from my OS as possible. I'm looking at you IE.
- timusca, on 02/24/2009, -4/+74Safari 4's menus are exactly like Chrome's... is this because both are based on webkit? Don't flame me... I don't know anything about programming and which parts of the UI are effected by webkit.
*edit* I'm talking about Windows, obviously... I don't know what the Mac version looks like yet until I get home, but I assume it is the same.
Also, I enjoy ellipsis... - inactive, on 02/24/2009, -2/+68Does Firefox come with Adblock?
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -3/+61Steve Jobs passed the acid test too.
- mikepictor, on 02/24/2009, -3/+56um...it's not the fastest. It's fast...but chrome and safari are faster.
The different may not be enough to worry about though. FF is still a great browser. - fezzasus, on 02/24/2009, -14/+60Take that google. This is what happens when you release Chrome as windows only.
- Laughto, on 02/24/2009, -19/+62Crashes on opening on my comp. Nice sounding features, though I have never understood Apple's obsession with cover flow.
- rimantas, on 02/24/2009, -1/+43One can debate about being best browser, but it has best engine for sure.
- TheNik, on 02/24/2009, -0/+42Download and install Safari AdBlock, then. The biggest problem with it is how it doesn't collapse the element where the ad was, it just doesn't display (or download) the ad itself.
Regardless, there are plenty of ad blocking programs for Safari. http://pimpmysafari.com has a lot of them listed. - shanos, on 02/24/2009, -14/+53They should be more worried about speeding up itunes
- autoy, on 02/24/2009, -6/+45This is a story about the Interwebs, so let's talk about whatever you like. Have you seen that cupcake dog?
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -3/+41Please provide link to said cupcake dog as I have not yet sampled that particular Internet delight.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/24/2009, -3/+41Safari is a great browser on a mac. I"m interested in testing this new stuff out.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+38I'm a Mac user, have always thought it was pointless for almost everything.
With that said, I think they've finally found a good use for it with the history thing. Being able to flip through your recent history to find a specific page is much easier with the visual aid of coverflow. - inactive, on 02/24/2009, -4/+39Ah, but how FAST did it crash?
- Charlotte_Web, on 02/24/2009, -4/+38"It may have performance and extensibility but it lacks any kind of integration with the OS."
Isn't a goal of Firefox to be platform agnostic? - themuffinman, on 02/24/2009, -3/+36The difference is that Safari uses a lot of open systems that any other applications can use as well. Safari fits very well into the os, but there is nothing stopping you from using any other browser, and there is nothing stopping any other browser from doing the same things. You can say a lot of bad things about apple and locking users out from things, but safari isn't one of them.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 02/24/2009, -4/+37I DL'ed it to test it out and am really amazed at how fast it is. I thought Firefox 3 was fast but this is BLAZING.
I am not really a big fan of the tabs on top, but as a Mac user that's never used Chrome, maybe I'll get used to it. The top sites thing is cool, but a little redundant since I keep all of my "top sites" in the bookmark bar. I'd like to see an option to have it exclude site you already have bookmarked.
It's great for casual and quick browsing, but I will ultimately be going back to Firefox soon just because I'm too dependent on extensions like Ad Block Plus and the Google Toolbar. - Kruse, on 02/24/2009, -31/+62Firefox is overrated.
- samkityoung, on 02/24/2009, -16/+46This is a story about a web browser, which opens the door to comments about rival web browsers.
- mdaize, on 02/24/2009, -7/+36How is it that Opera isn't catching on? Wasn't it the fastest/most efficient browser according to various tests? I wonder how new Safari would do against it
- digitalpencil, on 02/24/2009, -1/+26^ when you're dealing with hundreds of image/video files all called DSCF000etc, or pdfs, or anything with inane, non-sensical filenames, having large document previews, instantly rendered and scrollable is very helpful with finding specific files, all of which, in small preview mode, look the same.
Coverflow and quicklook are some of the best features introduced into Leopard. - ofenza, on 02/24/2009, -2/+27How different is this from the nightly webkit? Is there any reason for me to switch from the nightly webkit to this version of safari?
Oh, and since we're all shouting which browser we use/prefer.
Safari is the only browser I enjoy using on the Mac.
Firefox is tottal bull on the Mac, sorry, and I used it on Windows since like 0.7. - zwei, on 02/24/2009, -1/+25Looking good, love the Top Sites feature (like chrome) ...trying to get used to the new tabs.
Glad to see they went with a native Windows look this time. Maybe that'll entice more Windows users to actually use it. - inactive, on 02/24/2009, -0/+24http://i44.tinypic.com/5efqdt.jpg
- specialK16, on 02/24/2009, -5/+29Testing it right now. Feels just like Chrome, maybe a little bit snappier.
But the only reason I keep coming back to Firefox is adblock. Digg adds are particularly annoying. - pilot3033, on 02/24/2009, -2/+26100/100
- waterboy1628, on 02/24/2009, -0/+24Firefox on a PC= AWESOME
Firefox on a Mac = Nice, but noticeably slower than Safari - inactive, on 02/24/2009, -2/+25Firefox OS X is bloated and slow. Especially compared to Safari on OS X. I hate all of this Firefox hype.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -0/+22"There's no need to introduce another windows browser."
Though I'd like to suggest the removal of one. - bkemper, on 02/24/2009, -0/+22Yeah, in Safari, as in pretty much every other Cocoa app (like Mail, for instance), you can double click on a word, press command-E, then press command-G to find the next instance of that word on the page. Or on any page of any Cocoa app. Cocoa remembers what you are looking for even when you switch to other Cocoa apps. I can't tell you the number of times I've switch from BBEdit to FireFox and try to "find again" the search term I defined in BBEdit, only to have that not work in FireFox.
- frontaxle, on 02/24/2009, -1/+22Downloaded it and love the Show Top Sites window. It seems way faster on my crappy G4.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+22Webkit is the rendering engine.
Safari is the browser.
If you are downloading the nightly builds of webkit engine, you are using it in Safari 3 browser.
Webkit isn't a browser.
Safari 4 is the new version of the Safari browser. - kreatre2007, on 02/24/2009, -3/+22Ah... the sound of closed minds... If you don't actually TRY Safari 4, how do you know which browser really works best?
- zwaldowski, on 02/24/2009, -0/+19Safari 4 on Windows 7 is ***** AMAZING. I wish they'd pull this same ***** on iTunes.
- waxesstatic, on 02/24/2009, -0/+18100/100 on acid3 test. http://acid3.acidtests.org/
- TheBigSquid, on 02/24/2009, -1/+19Don't flame me, bro.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -11/+29err they have a mac and linux version in the works. Safari was mac only when it started so stop ***** over google. Also Safari 4 on windows has completely ripped of the UI of Chrome.
