- nailz420, on 02/12/2008, -4/+256does it come with companion cube?
- STKD, on 02/12/2008, -8/+156Presumably it does what it must, because it can. For the good of all of us.
- wild, on 02/12/2008, -4/+105I invited your best friend the companion cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him.
- Daggity, on 02/12/2008, -7/+85Except the ones who are dead. :(

- osoroco, on 02/12/2008, -8/+82was I the only one who thought about Aperture announcing Portal 2 when reading this headline?

- bbqsalad, on 02/12/2008, -2/+50An application for photographers. Library management, Development and print.
- canyonblue, on 02/12/2008, -3/+50let the competition grow! with apeture 2 now costing $199 and fixing many complaints perhaps adobe lightroom will also drop in price and continue to improve.
i for one take a lot of digital photos but am no professional photographer. i *want* one of these programs and $199 is close to the sweet spot to let me justify a purchase while $299+ was not. - TheCosmicFool, on 02/12/2008, -7/+47"We do what we must, because we can.."
- viruz, on 02/12/2008, -3/+39if any of you got the 1.5 serial when you signed up for the trial...
here's the 2.0 generic TRIAL serial
E-338-ITZ-244-EET-266-NFD-434-ITF-F8M-Z3TX - STKD, on 02/12/2008, -4/+38...But there's no use crying over every mistake.
- cyberdork, on 02/12/2008, -4/+37Yes exactly. You also heard about Photoshop? It's just like MS Paint!
- lostsinner, on 02/12/2008, -1/+27Not like Picasa, no. Apple's analog to Picasa would be iPhoto, which also isn't free but comes as part of a group of creative applications. Aperture is like Adobe Lightroom in that it offers support for RAW images, more advanced photo manipulation and batch processing, and support for professional printing.
If Picasa and iPhoto are intended for casual home users who take pictures with a point-and-shoot camera, Aperture and Lightroom are intended for semi-professional and professional photographers. - Flame0001, on 02/12/2008, -2/+25But then it just keeps trying 'till it runs out of cake.
- tobsterius, on 02/12/2008, -1/+24Apple usually offers significantly discounted rates if you purchased an older version within like 30 days prior to the new release.
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -14/+35"this was a triumph"
"i'm making a note here"
"HUGE SUCCESS" - neio, on 02/12/2008, -7/+28Yes, you were the only one, cause the title has Apple in it, not Valve.
- wcarolyn, on 02/12/2008, -4/+23Can you guys not link to blog spam of a press release? Even I found a better link to submit in a few seconds:
http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/ - wild, on 02/12/2008, -3/+21Actually, its for people on a Mac.
- smoger, on 02/12/2008, -0/+18yep. i figured i wouldnt get too deep into the comments before a portal reference
- cawpin, on 02/12/2008, -5/+22Good job. You're only the third person IN A ROW to throw that quote out.
- noahhoward, on 02/12/2008, -3/+19No, not really.
- ahpro, on 02/12/2008, -21/+37I'm a windows user. Somebody please explain what this is for me and all those others who don't know.
- WolverineBlue, on 02/12/2008, -3/+19One of those new features had better be the ability to create a two dimensional rifts allowing the user to immediately travel between them.
- Linh, on 02/12/2008, -1/+16it's a $10 upgrade if you bought it this year.
- Nothlit, on 02/12/2008, -4/+19I've always found it amusing that Apple has to take their online store down to release a new product...
- PathDaemon, on 02/12/2008, -2/+16I used Aperture for a while because it was Apple's answer to photo management and I liked the interface and some unique features. But I soon realized that it was the most disk- and memory-hungry program I had ever used — totally slaughtered my old PowerBook (and refused to import, even to an external drive, when I had less than 2GB free... which happened a lot).
I've moved to Lightroom now and can say that, at least for me, they're NOT almost the same. The only major similarity is that they both have the same intent, the management of huge photo libraries. Lightroom has a flat, black-grey-and-white interface while Aperture is definitively Aqua 2.0. It's difficult for me to express the other distinctions this early in the morning.
I miss Light Tables and full screen (sure, you can hit a shortcut in Lightroom and hide all the panels, but it's nothing like the Apple way of letting the image take over the screen and popping up HUDs when needed) but find Lightroom to be snappier (and even a friend of mine stuck on an iBook can use it) and its adjustments far more effective.
Actually, I need to break into a new paragraph here. What the *****, Apple? Whenever I make changes to a photo in Aperture, bad ***** happens. Change the exposure, I see the highlights getting blown out. Raise the brightness, the contrast drops. I didn't TOUCH Levels past day 1, because it destroyed the any picture I applied it to (especially the midtones slider).
Whatever. Point is, as I see it, Aperture 2 IS worth a look, but give Lightroom some well-deserved credit. - viruz, on 02/12/2008, -6/+20At least it now supports vigneting ... honestly that was one of the only things keeping me on Adobe Lightroom. (they're almost the same , except some minr things like that)
With integration with iPhoto and all of the other goodies it offers, I've always wanted to use it. So I guess I will be getting it this week. - Impius, on 02/12/2008, -2/+16The software is a lie...
- hexon, on 02/12/2008, -2/+14does it come with cake?
- betrayed, on 02/12/2008, -0/+12oh, you!
- hellyes, on 02/12/2008, -2/+14use the reply button
- canyonblue, on 02/12/2008, -6/+17fiftyeggs there is a $99 upgrade program for any apeture user and if you bought 1.5 since jan 1st they charge only $9.99 to upgrade.
- bbqsalad, on 02/12/2008, -0/+10fail much?
- flarn2006, on 02/12/2008, -1/+11for the people who are still alive
- smoger, on 02/12/2008, -2/+12i love how theres more portal comments than actual aperture comments
- LowFuel, on 02/12/2008, -3/+12Its called building hype...
- parkermauney, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11Not happening.
- Coven, on 02/12/2008, -0/+9Thank you. It is very clear now.
- smoger, on 02/12/2008, -1/+9and the science gets done and you make a neat gun
- lolinyerface, on 02/12/2008, -4/+12And the only thoughts Apple should bring to mind are of candy, rainbows and unicorns crapping lucky charms.
Now pick up that can, citizen. - superkendall, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8But I've been using advanced searches and smart folders in Aperture which was never in Lightroom.
Lightroom had the edge in editing features before, but that was it - Aperture was far ahead in organizational mangement, a big reason why you use a tool like this. Plus Aperture knows enough to version RAW conversions so that pulling up an image a year from now will look the same even after ewer RAW conversions are out.
Now that Aperture is at parity (or perhaps slightly ahead) in editing, people who were using Lightroom because they needed vibrance or targeted adjustments might want to take another look. - Andy.D, on 02/12/2008, -3/+10A reasonable price finally.
- paradigm1220, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8See that green thumbs up? That's the equivalent of saying ditto, but without the need to take up comment space.
- PA42, on 02/12/2008, -3/+9I appreciate your answer, however"runs on my old hardware, runs faster on my new hardware ... [and] cross platform" are pretty irrelevant to the question I asked. I made it clear what computer I am running and that fact that Aperture runs fine on my hardware.
Could you elaborate on "better metadata" and "better curves"? I have seen that written elsewhere, but am unsure if the incremental change between them would be worth the money/ effort of changing. - KibibyteBrain, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6Except Photoshop is a free app too, right? Seems that way, sometimes.
- Snuffy, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7if you love that thing so much why don't you marry it... BECAUSE I WONT LET YOU, how does that make you feel
- morcheeba, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7Here's the link: http://www.apple.com/aperture/upgrade/
- digitalpencil, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7It has GMA950/X3100 support so will run fine on an MB but Lightroom is probably a more stable solution for systems such as these.
