- fraul, on 07/16/2008, -1/+42Buried for inaccurate - they didn't unlock the 3G iPhone yet, they have only managed to unlock the 2.0 Firmware running on 1G iPhones ... regarding the 3G, they only have jailbreaked it so far.
- TheDeepFriar, on 07/15/2008, -4/+31unlock iPhone + install skype = epic win
- suntzusputnik, on 07/15/2008, -3/+26yea, but how do you go about acquiring one when you have to activate em in-store?
- iashraf, on 07/16/2008, -2/+22Fake a heart attack
- NinjaPig, on 07/16/2008, -0/+19Unlocking 3g iphone, done or not, doesn't matter in the US. The iphone is a tri-band HSDPA/UMTS, it supports 850/1900/2100. Only at&t carries and uses the 1900 for 3g in the US. T-mobile is the only one to use the 1700 frequency for downloads on their newly expanding 3g network, which the iphone doesn't support. Europe and other places in the world can reap the benefits because other networks are supporting 1900/2100/850.
So, other than for the gps and sound quality, iphone 3g has absolutely no benefits in unlocking over the previous iphone. It just costs more. - kenvsryu, on 07/16/2008, -1/+15Apple hardly tries to secure the iPhone since unlocking means more sales.
- rebotfc, on 07/16/2008, -1/+13More trash Journalism from CNET. Not researched, buried.
- LennyX, on 07/16/2008, -5/+13Jailbreak != Unlock
TurboSim and similar don't count.
Buried. - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -3/+10Apple foiled again? I guess they didn't hear about that whole signing up for AT&T before leaving the store thing.
- Zcott, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6That's not the right story at all.
The CNET article says the iPhone 3G has been unlocked with a TurboSIM style adapter which tricks the iPhone into thinking there's a legitimate SIM in it.
The video you linked to from the iPhone dev team shows the iPhone 3G jailbroken and running their own custom firmware. That's not the same as having it unlocked. - tehhowch, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6I don't think anyone expected it to last very long
- metallikop, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6Don't forget MobileScrobbler.
- Mickeh65, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5PROTIP: Don't post the same story more than 9,000 times.
- Konformitee, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5As opposed to before when you could buy it, walk out of the store, and unlock it without ever having to sign a contract or pay an early termination fee right? I can't possibly see the difference.
- subliminali, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4clearly it wasn't the 'best efforts' of Apple. Give them enough credit to figure out how it was unlocked last time (they might read digg occasionally) and realize that the world didn't end when it was unlocked so they didn't spend billions trying to 'fix' it again this time. you still have to pay a ridiculous amount for the phone if you buy it w/o contract so i'm sure you've got steve jobs crying all the way to the bank.
- annflower, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4So what? u can buy iPhone only with contract. Price without contract covers all Apple's loses
- Firehed, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3$199 phone + $175 ETF = $374 contract-free phone. You figure it out from there.
- AtomB, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3If you travel overseas and want to pick up a prepaid sim while you are there you can use your phone.
- guimialfaro, on 07/16/2008, -2/+5Great! Another iPhone story!
- championchap, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I see only one reason for it anymore.
When your contract comes to an end, if you don't want to renew it you won't have to. - chicaneuk, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Except that you can't buy an iPhone without a contract at the subsidised rate any more. You have to activate in store do you not? Thus rendering this process somewhat pointless as you NEED to take out a contract when you buy an iPhone 3G...
- statix, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2buried for having a profit plan fully thought out.
- chrisinsocalif, on 07/16/2008, -2/+4Nerds will always prevail!
- robogobo, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1don't you guys know anything? just buy it, unlock it, do whatever you want with it and tell AT&T they can come pick up their ETF. unlocked iPhone 3G for $370 to be used on prepay, outside the country, etc. get with it.
- MacParrot, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Wouldn't tying a pork chop around your neck so the dog will play with you get you more attention than by saying something so colossally stupid easypie?
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Jailbreak (does not =) Unlock.
Jailbreak is the ability to install 3rd party apps, not any sim card, which unlocking is.
Unlocking = Unlocking. - magicmarc, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I do, it seemed to go to this site for "iMunizator", brining a fake Mac OS X style window and an automatic .dmg download. Seemed to have stopped now, but strange nonetheless.
- arrow85, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I think that the hack is not complete. It will come very very soon. And lets think of this in terms of windows and viruses. There are so many windows boxes out there that it is worth the time to dig hard and find a hack. The same comes with the iphone there are already over 1 million sold and that is just 3 days in. This is going to be a huge deal for apple and all the telecoms the fact they have product people want. The fact that the service is not up par that is att fault no apple. The reason you will never get a CDMA or Verizon phone is just that it is CDMA. It is massivly cheaper to produce the same phone world wide. It is also a QUAD band GSM phone so enough of this ATT is the only kid on the block junk you just do not get 3G on Tmobile you get edge with ur new 3g iphone. The hack will allow me when i travle to go domestic at every port i land in. That is a feature no other phone on the market offers me with all the same capability.
- orph3us, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1fring works great on jailbreak. and since it doesnt have to follow apples stupid app store rules it can run in the background and receive calls while you are on wifi.
- statix, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1
- andrewpmk, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11. Buy iPhone in a country where it is available without a contract.
2. Unlock
3. Ship to US
4. PROFIT!!!! - raada, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1It doesnt matter to Apple or ATT if it is unlocked or jailbreaked. They will still sell iPhones in huge amounts.
- adamkmccarthy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1"foiled" is a bit harsh - apple would love to sell unlocked iphones to the masses like ipods. they have to be in bed with the carriers for a while so they can get network approval. exactly the same as most other brands, except you can already buy their phones unlocked.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Also if you cancel from AT&T within the first 30 days, they charge you $200 for not returning the handset and there is no cancellation fee.
So you pay a total of about $400 for your iPhone. That is still $200 cheaper than the $599 sticker price that they planned for a non-contract iPhone. Plus AT&T doesn't lose anything. - Jakeman21co, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2when will apple learn. there will always be someone smarter than you that can do what you think is impossible.
- Definition, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I'm liking the thumbnail.
- phoomp, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1hmmm ... AT&T seems to carry alot of *free* camera phones, which I think is cheaper than $199.
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cel ...
Of course, none of those are good for texting. However, for $50 and up you can get a smart phone with a physical keyboard, and those *are* better for texting. They're also arguably better than the iPhone, good as it's touch-screen keyboard is. - PaulBM, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Yawn
- Hosalabad, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1How has Apple been foiled. You still have to buy the phone to get it to unlock it.
- Firehed, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Except that a) there's no skype app and b) apple already said VOIP apps are OK over WiFi (any carrier will likely give you a hard time if they found you VOIPing over their cell data networks).
- lump1, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Nice, but there's no point switching providers if you're already locked into a contract with AT&T, so one of the primary "wins" from unlocking goes away.
Since AT&T and Apple both get all their money from these sorts of unlock, they don't have much incentive to prevent them. You wonder why they lock the new iphones at all. - ahmedcol, on 01/29/2009, -0/+0http://sa-girl.com
