Apple 1984 Newsweek Advertising Insert
toastbucket.com — In the Fall of 1984 Apple published a 16-page (with fold-out) advertising insert in Newsweek magazine. For many, this was the first “up-close” experience with a Macintosh — detailing the radical features of this new computer.

"Soon there will be two kinds of people. Those who use computers. And those who use Apples."
Haha, how true... Look at where we are now.- zybch, on 10/12/2007, -30/+9Ah, but now there are: "Those that use Apples" and "Inteligent people who don't want to waste their money on overpriced crud that till last month was unable to run 90% of software".
- TechknowPagan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Yes, so "Inteligent" that they cant spell INTELLIGENT.
Idiot. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11No, zybch, more like those that use apples, and those who get annoyed by all the apple stuff on digg and spam it just as much with stupid comments.
Oh, and TechnowPagan, you might have missed his joke- INTELigent :P - JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10ohhh.... For the last time.... Apple prices are pretty much the same price as you would buy a comparable Dell....
Could people please stop lying. Just for me....

THIS IS A NEWS SITE NOT AN APPLE MASTURBATION SOCIETY- spooq, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14no... it really is an apple masturbation society... sorry...
- nerdingout, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8ah, sweet, sweet masturbation
- patjamas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3seriously, half of the links on digg are just spam, most of those tend to be apple. Old apple ads... come on... that isn't news in any sense. If you want to be a member of the digg community you have to either be a mac fanboi and come here for fappage, or be a microsoft fanboi and come here and spam the threads.
- wankey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I used to have one of these, they used to be cool until I got a 486 with lemmings.

- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6These advertising pics bring back all my original memories of wanting to buy the Mac. Great.
I TOTALLY forgot how huge the Mac bag was.
These adverts chronicle one of the most important shifts in the personal computer market to date. I'd love to see another one like it.... - rtphokie, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Linux:Slashdot::Apple:Digg
sigh.
Reasonable people, please join me in reporting all dugg Apple stories with little or no news or other content as spam.- charbarred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4huh?

Digg users! Please join my quest to rid dig of meaningless Apple stories! Only you can help! You must help me by reporting such stories as spam or simply not digging them! - JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Dude.... Apple stories here are like under 5-10% of total stories.....
There are a lot of Apple users here..... Deal with it.... This is what people here want. - Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11There are more Windows and Linux users on Digg. We just dont find old magizine ads from the 80s and post a link to them. Apple users routinely Digg anything that is related to Apple no matter the content value. It has nothing to do with what people want more than it has to do with Apple fans pushing anything to the front page.
Will this comment get -3 or -22? Its up to you fanboys!
Everytime you let a non postive comment about Apple go unburied, Steve Jobs kills a kitten.
Think about the kittens!!! - JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Geterix..... You are modded down for whining... Nothing else. Those who talk against Apple without whining or lying though their teeth are not modded down.
So stop the bs. There is loads of old crap here including old articles. You are just in here bitching because it's Apple related and you seem to have some bad childhood memories of an Apple being dropped on you. At least that is the only way I can explain this Apple hatred. - vmerc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Please do not report this as "spam" it's not spam. It would be more appropriate to use "Ok this is lame" to report this article.
Seriously; if you're going to call for action, call for the right action.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13This is old news.
;o) - spyres, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Hey, shoot me, but I enjoy seeing old ads like this when they're interesting/entertaining like this one.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Fell sorry for those who saw those CAD-like pictures in Paintbrush (or whatever was called that drawing program inside the mac) and thought they would be able to do similar stuff using that program alone!
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's been dugg, anyone get a mirror before it went down?
- Seer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3No, the author just realised it's meaningless crap and took the site down
- Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Seriously! This is just retarded. Most windows or Linux users would never digg such nonsense, but for some reason the Apple kids will make sure this gets to the front page ASAP.
Read this comment quick, because they also like to bury dissent.- JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You re not getting it are you? People like you are not modded down because you don't like apple. You are modded down because you come into every single apple related digg and start crying and lying.
Just..... Don't go into the apple related diggs..... It should be easy. Apart from this there isn't anything apple related until page 3.
And this that windows and linux users wouldn't digg things like this.... is utter bs. Some people like you simply just don't like hearing the word "Apple" anywhere near them. Don't understand why. Inferiority complex? - Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3"And this that windows and linux users wouldn't digg things like this.... is utter bs. Youre telling this to a guy who owns Apple products and collects old Apple hardware. Real nice.
"Just..... Don't go into the apple related diggs..... "
Not all Apple stories are stupid, Its just that the fankids will Digg anything related to Apple, it gets to the front page while better stories get lost. It really makes Digg out to be an "Apple masturbation society"
When was the last time you've seen an Apple related story not get an instant 100 diggs?
"And this that windows and linux users wouldn't digg things like this.... is utter bs."
Really? care to give an example. It extreamly rare to see more linux stories on the front page compaired to your usual Apple trite article. - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I dugg this and am not an apple fanboy. I just remember using these computers when I was in first grade. The first computers I ever used. dugg for nostalgia.
- JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You re not getting it are you? People like you are not modded down because you don't like apple. You are modded down because you come into every single apple related digg and start crying and lying.
- Windsinger, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3This isn't DIGG material! Post advertisements on a marketing site, not a tech site. Dig has really gone to the toilet.
- JonGretar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Actually... I don't think you would be in here complaining if this wasn't Apple related....... hateboy.
- rvalles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Apple radical features weren't as radical as Amiga's (next year). But the idiots from Commodore failed completelly on the advertising part.

Ya know, I'm thinkin the same thing. With a title like, "Apple 1984 Newsweek Advertising Insert" you'd think it'd be pretty easy to look at it and decide whether you think that'd be something cool to read or not. If not, you just don't click the link. I don't get it. To see a article title that clearly indicates what the story is, then to go into it just to bitch about the fact that it's there seems like a waste of time. How bout using that energy to post about stories that you think ARE relevant to a site like digg. - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Banana Jr., anyone? :) I miss Bloom County.
- AaronTheYoung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The only reason no one posts PC ads is because they just aren't that cool. Okay, I have seen some interesting PC ads from years ago, but not as cool (IMHO) as the Apple ones.
Go Apple!- patjamas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah seriously, I only spank it to old apple ads too.
- socialblunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was always into the Apple advertising, although my favorites were the tv spots... The Apple Switch campaign, I believe (I want to marry Ellen Feiss). The thing that got me to love Apple wasn't the machines; it was their focus on good design, from their adverts to their packaging. Anyone that's bought a Mac knows what I'm talking about... It's all about the aesthetics.
- patjamas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0deffinetly, how a computer looks and who they have in the commercial advertising it are number 1. things like performance, cost, quality... not of much concern after aesthetics and who advertises it.
- GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They actually compare the size of the processor itself, or at least the CPU packaging. That's funny.
- flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The day before the 1984 Super Bowl, full page newspaper ads ran. Just huge text on a white page, and an Apple logo.
"If you go to the bathroom during the fourth quarter, you'll be sorry." Heh. - TheRealDeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The people that are complaining about this have absolutely no idea what a revolutionary machine this was when it was introduced. They have no sense of history.
I am one of the old timers around here, who started off his computing career in grade 7 with a Commodore Pet in school. Soon thereafter I got an Apple ][ for home. When I first used the Mac in high school around 1985. It was a mind blower. I had no idea that you could interact with a computer in this way (no command line). It was strangely foreign yet extremely inviting and fun. It was a landmark achievement in the world of personal computers. That, my friends, is why this ad is relevant!
Dugg!! - TheRealDeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Take a look at page 10. Even Bill Gates thought that the original Mac was kick ass!
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm surprised no one else mentioned this..
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digging for providing the flashback in time. I was a dummy and sold mine at a garage sale back in the 90's -- my pre geek days. It would have made a nice retro piece today.
Oh, the 800 numbers on the ad still dial up Apple ;)
http://toastbucket.com/apple1984ad/p15.html - maverick1972, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This really takes you back; Only us veterans could appreciate this. I bought a LISA at an auction for 5 bucks and sold it on eBay for 3 grand about 2 years ago. That was good turnover.
