- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30So the ninjas are now pirates?
OH THE PARADOXIALITY! - BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The day software is released for the AppleTV making it a viable replacment for XBMC is the day I go to the Apple Store and pick one up.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yep. It's the finishing move where the guy actually travels back in time to kill your grandfather.
- flysupes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Has anyone considered the idea that Apple made the AppleTV to be hackable... they had to "lock it down" for rights management purposes, but it seems that they didn't exactly make it hard to tear into. Could be that they knew their audience would want more functionality but couldn't officially endorse the kinds of things they wanted... whoops, we forgot to lock the back door, sorry (wink wink).
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8as a self respecting geek i use 'what-ever-text-editor-i-happen-to-like-the-most'. Heard of it? Geekdom is about non-conformity, the moment you start worrying about other peoples opinions you've moved from geekdom into pop culture.
- 8177, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is it possible that the AppleTV was built to be easily hacked so more people would buy it. I know i wouldnt buy it unless there was a hack for it.
I know it sounds stupid but still... - mrfunktastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Officer Slythfox, thanks for keeping the grammer streets safe out there.
- negtive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Damn...I was expecting pics of ninjas slicing and dicing an AppleTV to tiny pieces. =(
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because XBMC can't do HD, and doesn't have integrated wireless
- funwithscissors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did someone say Ninjas? DIGG!
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nice to see that they are ripping off Ninja Tunes logo... not. www.ninjatune.net
advertising spam in other words - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Hey Steve, your new Mac with nothing but a 40GB HD, a processor just powerful enough to decode 720P, and an Airport is ready. But how will we convince consumers it's worth $300?"
"Easy. It's not a Mac-- it's a media device." - neuroticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Eccohawk
I figured as much from Apple Co., but I *meant* that geeks should figure out how to hack their AppleTV into a AppleTV+'Tivo'. It seems silly having both as separate boxes (since I think we are stuck with cable for at least a few more years) - Eccohawk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@neuroticus
actually, the general opinion as i've heard it is that this functionality would be one of the last things that the AppleTV would ever become. Not for a lack of want by consumers, but more simply because it would undermine Steve and Co's ability to sell the shows piecemeal on the iTMS. If you can record your Lost and Heroes and CSI right there on the machine, why buy it from Apple? - CdnPhoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Let's hope they do the oposite. They include the hacks or make it even easier to add them to the AppleTV.
Being able to hack the original XBox was one of the things that made it good.
Linksys embrased the modding community with their router. Apple, let's see more of this. (I'd love to see their router get hacked to add some of the features found on the DD-WRT firmware.) - t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ninjas hacked the Apple TV so pirates could play their stolen booty on it.
No, but seriously, I won't be satisfied until Apple TV's Frontrow can play XVIDS without launching any other apps. Any ninjas out there think they can pull it off? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is becoming an Apple dream. A box in everyone's living room that is infinitely hackable, extensible, and moddable.
let's hope they don't ***** it up by trying to "secure" it or change the OS to "prevent abuse." let's hope they recognize that one man's abuse is another man's well thought out customization. - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If people can get apps like VNC, Joost, and VLC running, I don't know why they couldn't try to shoehorn some EyeTV USB dongle's driver onto the AppleTV and the EyeTV software onto the Apple TV to do just that. It's probably possible, and it will probably happen. I guess we need to give them more than a few days. :P
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And then makes you become your own grandfather.
By the way, how did Fry explain that concept to Bender without Bender's head exploding?
...I can't believe I just seriously pondered that... - cearum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd have to agree. The headline was catchy and involves a nice twist to the standard copy+paste of most of them.
- bigal90, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4nice tutorial really helped me out, just the thing i was looking for
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Paradoxiality...
...is that a new finishing move against robots in the next Mortal Kombat?
Not the same ring as fatality or animality, but definitely a step up from babetality. - pcsperson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article will become more and more popular as the as Apple TV increases in sales
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, some nice work... Now I have a reason to buy an apple TV.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I don't know about the TiVo, but Microsoft has a huge interest in making the XBox unhackable to keep people from pirating games.
- MrEddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I fully suspect that apple made this Apple TV with hackers in mind. Thats why it was so easy to crack. I'm willing to bet that apple fully expect any geek to take the original Apple TV and hack the hell out of it to make it do what they want. Apple just made sure to give it enough hardware to make it possible. The USB port probably serves no other use than to give hackers access to a USB port which they can enable.
I can't wait till complete hacked images are made for this puppy and it becomes the TV experience that i'm looking for. - jwvelez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6quite possibly the funniest headline in a long time.
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Honestly, to me the only reason that having DVR functionality in the Apple TV sounds good, is its proximity to the TV. It makes much more sense to do the DVR functions on your full-blown computer. It has more hard drive space, processing power, and flexibility. Plus with the Apple TV, you can still play the content on your TV.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They didn't do anything stupid like require that it run a signed kernel or something like Tivo or the Xbox. What do they care what you do with it once you buy it? You can pet the thing, dress it up in little clothes, and never plug it in for all they care. They have your $300.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Bingo, i've been using XBMC on my Xbox for years now, and it's just about seen it's day. It's starting to stutter on frames, and seems like development is starting to stall out.
This could be a great replacement for me. It's damn cheap and with the ultra l337 hax that you guys have provided, oh yeah. I'm set.
It would be nice if they could launch xvid/divx inside frontrow, but hey, for now....it's all good. Anyone seen them do a HD replacement yet? - neuroticus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yea, maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't it be the highest priority to add cable-DVR functionality?
- totuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought that it gets ripped up during removal?
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't have an appleTV so I can't try, but with the ability to ssh into the box and the fact that it uses EFI ( actually I am just guessing that much ) has anyone tried installing rEFIt and getting into the EFI shell?
- alefox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WoW works with the TV?? screens please
- wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone make sure to hug your favorite hacker today!
- neuroticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kissthering "people pay anywhere from $6 - $20/month for TiVo service"
Yea you're right, although keep in mind you can download TV listings for free with MythTV/Freevo/etc. So, even if Apple Co. offered a subscription similar to Tivo (I'm sure they will eventually), I'd prefer to spend nothing on subscriptions and just use MythTV with my AppleTV hardware. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know apple wants the $ from selling TV shows on iTunes, but they can't be making that much when they have to pay the companies that provide the content for every sale, people pay anywhere from $6 - $20/month for TiVo service depending on when you signed up and if you could get TiVo to cut you a deal on service. If Apple made a DVR accessory for the AppleTV why not charge $10/month (w/cable card features preferably). That's $10/month Apple can put in it's pocket instead of paying out to the companies that own the rights to TV shows. They'd have to make more money than they're pulling in with selling TV shows.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Only a matter of days before MythTV runs on the appleTV...making it the new best choice for use with MythTV instead of the sloooooooooooooooooooooow xbox.
- Jako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone notice he's hosted by http://survivedigg.com ? Pretty cool that it's holding up for you!
- totuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone should post the exact measurements of where the screws are hidden under the rubber mat on the bottom of the apple tv so that people don't have to peel it up to access the screws. e.g. the first screw is exactly one 22mm from the left side and 61mm from the top. then people could just dig through the padding to access the screw.
i don't have an apple tv yet, or i'd do it. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use nano all the time. It works, it's simple.
- Folic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know Ipp personally, and he did a fairly good job. He's having a nice comeback after being hacked, and being shown as a fraud.
GG Ipp i always believed in you :-D - im3ngs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So why don't people just turn a Mac Mini into an Apple TV? It seems to be more trouble than its worth.
- Ipp07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, it peals right off.
- BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2_Everyone_ knows Apple made the AppleTV hackable...
There I fixed it for you. - laterthanyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that quote would almost get greenlit at fark.
Still miles funnier than anything I've ever seen on here. - Ipp07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can just get a sprayable adhesive for when your done. No one will ever know!
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Amen to that. Notepad FTW!!!!11
- Willy99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1looks like a fun weekend project. Meanwhile - Fast & the Furious..
