- chumpbuster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44I could totally steal that... but only if I had a bag of sand.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34I hate to be a pain, and as a whole I am completely blown away by iPhone, but:
A. It costs as much as a PS3
B. It's not 3G
C. You can't remove/replace the battery (though the iPod seems to have proved that this isn't a huge issue...or rather that people don't own anything long enough for it to be an issue)
D. How do you insert/remove the SIM card, there's no removable back?
E. You can't just use it as an iPod. (if this were available sans the phone/wifi functions, it would be cheaper. and i would buy one. im sure this is forthcoming)
F. Even if you can dish out a pocket full of hundos for this thing, you're still going to need a $100/month service plan with Cingular to use everything. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24So that's what the back looks like...
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"Like any cellphone, a cellphone gets replaced on an everage 2-3 times a year. Mostly due to damage." - bgbs
Bah, you talk nonsense. I've had my cell phone for 3 years. The phone before that I also had 3 years. The phone before that, yes, about 3 years. Do you see a pattern here? If you're replacing your phone 2-3 times a year, perhaps you need remedial motor skills training.
"My Treo 700, has windows, media player, email, internet, contact manager, games, touch screen, camera, super crisp lcd, bluetooth, broadband. Thousands of applications available for Treo for free that I can install on my treo. Seriously, what does iPhone have that it is so praisworthy?"
I have two buddies with the Treo 700. They are always ranting and raving about how the stupid things are always freezing up on them. So perhaps the iPhone will be praiseworthy because it "just works?"
"Overated piece of hardware thats all it is."
Begone, troll. The cell phone market is horribly broken. Even the "best" devices on the market now are hated by the bulk of their users. The iPhone will completely change things for the better. Wait and see. And try to keep your gibberish to a minimum in the meantime. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15
I would love to see the face expression of the first guy who will drop his iPhone on the cement pavement :)
- CasadeMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14People are complaining about the memory? ummm..what other smartphone has 8 gigs? Oh that' right - none!
@swoop - I have a blackberry - you have n idea what you are talking about. - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Looks like they are running Dashboard Widgets on the thing. If it's got (a version of) OS/X underneath and support for Widgets, that opens up a *huge* realm of possibility for what people can add to the thing...
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Have you ever used a touchscreen to type out a long message/email? They suck"
Perhaps Apple's touchscreen is the first "non-sucky" touchscreen? I'll reserve judgment until I try it myself. From what I saw in the demo, I was very impressed.
Never doubt Apple's ability to do right what's always been done wrong before. - scottvc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10lets hope that its doesn't scratch as easy as the video iPod, cause man, thats an awesome screen!
- cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Touch screens seem like I nice idea but...you are going to get finger prints all over your nice display.
After an hour the iPhone will look like a big mess. - Dithre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Right dude. While your phone may do the basic functions of the iPhone, the whole point is that the iPhone does them better. It's all about a much better user experience.
- nate5182, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10How many people are going to post the same pictures of iPhone?
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A lens is made out of glass and it magnifies...
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The iphone is awsome, but why did they exclude an sd card slot?!?
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8...and some pics of the software:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2371 - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hahaha have you checked the stocks lately? a great majority of people disagree with you.
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i'll agree that battery life seems pretty bad, but the numbers quoted are usage times. what about standby? thats a big factor in a cell phone.
- NetJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The lack of removable battery IS a big problem for many people. People who travel carry spare batteries. I used to do it when I flew around consulting..most the execs in my office do it now. You start using this for email, wifi, and bluetooth and you'll find you're out of battery FAST. My wife had to go to the extended battery on her Q when using Bluetooth or she couldn't go a full day on a charge.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Okay I have actually seen the keynote and seen the the iphone in person at macworld so I am going to clear some things up.
"- 4GB/8GB too small. Good luck storing that movie."
Thats the biggest amount of flash memory you can buy at the moment, an average movie on the iTunes store is 1gb or smaller. This is alot of space, imagine having 4 or 5 movies on your cell phone, how amazing is that? And do you really want a harddrive in a cell phone? come on now..
"- Expensive. $499/$599 WITH a 2 year contract You could be stuck with a last gen product 1 year from now"
How is this different than any other product? the Treo 750w was outdated the second it came out...
"- People testing firsthand say typing is very difficult on the touch screen."
I know for a fact that maybe 1 or 2 reporters were able to touch the iPhone yesterday, the general public has not been able to touch it even at macworld because it was spinning in a glass display box. Plus it looks very easy to type compaired to any other device I have seen and since it has multi touch, and you can use two fingers at once, it will be amazing.
"- Exposed screen easy to damage."
Well any screen on any cell phone can get damaged, I have a SLVR right now, and I thought at first that screen was going to get murdered in my pocket, but 4 months later I barely have a scratch. I still do not put keys in that pocket or change.
"- Limited broadband capability? Isn't this just a 2.5G product?"
This phone is intended to be used in america and with cingular, if america or cingular offered something faster im sure the iPhone will follow...
"- Where's the two-way video conferencing?"
How many people do this and why would you want to do it with a cell phone? its just as gimmicky as the squirt function on a zune....
"- Finally -- Won't iPhone sales just cannibalize iPod sales? Who's gonna get an iPod AND an iPhone?"
Nope, because the average person walking into a store to buy a music player is still going to buy a ipod for music. Plus most people buy nanos anyways, they want something small and cute, and are you really going to work out with your phone?
the only reason I am commenting is because its really annoying to see every one bashing the features of the iphone because their Treo 700 can do the same thing, music, video, email, browsing.. But trust me watch the apple keynote, learn something before you post and you will be eating your words...
- Piglith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Probably the same thing any large screen phone would do, dropped from 5 ft. It all depends on how/what it lands on.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7it's an amazing piece of kit no question but the price, size of memory, provider and battery life all let this down for me. I guess i'll stick with my Moto and Shuffle for now.
- iamsojelin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Weren't a large majority of these pics on Engadget yesterday?
- CasadeMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Did either of you guys go to the link on this page and actually look at the pictures?
- mglmouser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i wouldn't worry so much for the phone but rather my heart.
- RobototoboR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ Pixeldust
You put the sim card in a slot at the top. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Come my minions! Rise for your master. Let your evil shiiiine.
- theotherrogue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Pictures from behind glass does not equal high quality, even if they are "bigger" pictures.
- Joyrex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Erm, why not just go to Apple's site and look at it there?
http://www.apple.com/iphone - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"it is brushed aluminum just like the casing on the nano."
The nano isn't brushed aluminum. It's just colored aluminum. - dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://images.appleinsider.com/events/mw07/iphone/iphone-proto-mw-10.jpg
lol, the answer/decline call buttons are swapped.. at least according to what we're used to.. - pixeldust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@chris9920
"5 hours is bad. I can charge my phone and leave it on for a week. plus it's not like it does 5 hours and 16 hours. You could watch a movie and then only use your phone for 3 hours. That's crap."
Uh, you're not talking about talk time, you're talking about standby. 5 hours talk time is at least on par if not slightly better than similar phones. - g3buz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i love how posts correctly pointing out what the iPhone won't do are getting modded down. ignorance, meet bliss.
The iPhone is NOT a smart phone, it does NOT take SD cards. NO THAT SLOT IS NOT AN SD CARD SLOT.
To the people who don't understand why you would want something on the phone that wasn't on your ipod (a backup battery, and sd card), wrap your head around this: phones and music players are functionally different things that have different requirements. - OhJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to Apple's own HCI guidelines the action button is supposed to be on the right, so I guess that's why they put it there.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2quote
Jeez check the Apple site for details or listen to the Keynotes.
On top power/sleep button, headset jack, slot for SDRAM/microSD
/quote
You need to practice what you preach, the slot on the top is for a SIM chip, not microSD/SDRAM. - spindrift, on 10/12/2007, -4/+65 hours talk time and 16 hours listen time isn't enough? Apple says the Shuffle gets around 12, and the Q gets around 4.
Not saying that it'll get that amount, but right now nobody has any information to the contrary. - theprokaryote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Would have been a nice touch for the Apple logo to light up like the way it does on Laptops.
But hey, I'm not picky. Its still an iPhone :] - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yea but consider, that's 5 hours straight of video or talking. are you really gonna stay on a call for 5 hours or watch a movie for 5 hours every time you use it? i know im not. the phones gonna be on standby for quite a bit and im sure its gotta great battery life considering.
- bigsteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple's iPhone looks awesome. I'll probably get it when a 3G model is available [because according to Cingular, apparently where I live in Philadelphia has 3G coverage.] I had no reason until yesterday to care about Cingular's plans, so today I went looking on their site and was left with questions. They have some prices up for their data plans, and there's no easy way to tell if they're referencing 3G or EDGE [or maybe both, just where applicable? Can anyone shed any light?] There is of course the possibility that they release some kind of "special iPhone plan" as T-mobile did for their sidekick devices.
Smart phone unlimited ... $19.99/mo [this seems like the most likely candidate]
Data connect unlimited ... $44.95/mo [the description of this one says for PDAs. No obvious difference from smart phone unlimited]
I'm on Verizon now and in contract for 10 more months, and I guess I'm happy. My brother was on Cingular and liked it, never had a problem. I hear their customer service is not great, but thanks to your ability to manage plans and bills online, I don't see it being an issue. Plus the visual voice mail browsing and conference calling looks neat. [I wonder if you get hit twice for minutes on conf. calls........]
Remember though, how many doubted apple's switch to Intel when AMD was ahead in the performance/enthusiast market. And now look... Intel has the faster chip while eating less power. Apple does their homework, and they must see something in Cingular's future plans [plans that I'm sure the public isn't privied to.]
....and am I the only one who doesn't get the people yelling "you put PS3 down for its price tag but you'll pay for the iPhone"? The two products have essentially nothing in common [except of course, the hype.] - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it will be twice as skinny the next year .then maybe ill take a look.
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No problem here, my condo has 6" marshmallow flooring. Yes, it was an upgrade.
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2upper left on back. the little black dot.
- kronzdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what is the slot on the side (sd card?)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cell phone insurance
- smohan123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At this very instant, 4 of the top 10 digg stories are solely about the iPhone.
- jsc07302, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I forgot add some questions...
- How long will battery life hold up? Yes, and I do mean 1 year from now, when your contract has another year to go.
- Is the battery removeable? How much are spare/replacement batteries? And if you have replacement batteries, how are you going to charge them? - JamesSaveker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was under the impression that Cisco (or similar) had registered iPhone as a trade mark or such like. How are Apple calling it the iPhone?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i think bgbs is probably working for verizon or sprint and he sees his sales/job going down the drain. you can come clean my floors if you want a new job bgbs.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it is brushed aluminum just like the casing on the nano.
- 35263526, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Piglith I'm looking at Apple's site right now and it doesn't appear to say anything about a card slot.
That being said, I'm not overly worried. Are 8GB SDs even available? Hell, are any higher than 4GB available? If not, then there's little point in complaining about it. - kdjsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I've been using a Motorola A780 for about a year now. It's a flip-phone/Linus-based PDA where the dial-pad is on the OUTSIDE of the flip - you can use it closed via headset or speakerphone - and the inside where a dil pad would be is a touchscreen. When the phone is flipped open an on-screen dial pad comes up. It's a small screen, but typing accuracy is 100% on the numeric dial pad and damn near on the on-screen querty keyboard used for texting, typing notes, etc. And the screen really doesn't smudge with fingerprints badly at all - I wipe it down occasionally on my shirt or a decent cloth, but it's hardly a weekly ritual with the thing. I'm looking forward to Apple's take on cell phones.
