App Store is Like a Sweet, Sweet Drug: Five IPhone Apps
blog.wired.com — Here are some first impressions of the new iPhone applications.
- 805 diggs
- digg it
- btschul, on 07/14/2008, -5/+20The Remote app is amazing, however I have had some problems with it. It has crashed my iPod a few times, and if you try to change albums with it while iTunes is in fullscreen coverflow, iTunes crashes. Has anyone else had problems like this?
- hmunkey, on 07/15/2008, -3/+8Why are people digging you down? The same has happened to me. I'm not sure why, but then again Remote is still new, so give it time for updates.
- ispshadow, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Yup, same here...
- phoomp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Criticizing Apple gets you dugg down,
- btschul, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1don't get me wrong, I LOVE APPLE. I have never had a problem with any of their products before this. All of my computer gear is apple. I am merely offering that there are a few problems with this new app, and asking if anyone else has experienced them as well.
- gordeaoux, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3I haven't had many problems with the Remote specifically, but all the apps seem to crash randomly. Every once in a while they'll hard restart the whole phone. I chalk it up to newness.
- btschul, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Also, ever since I updated my touch to 2.0, when I sync it, it backs up my iPod. Which takes 10 minutes. EVERY ***** TIME. It takes me 10 minutes to sync my iPod every time.
- alefox, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1just FYI, next to the part that shows you what it's syncing (at the top) there's an X button that you can hit to stop the sync
- btschul, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2But I can't cancel the sync because I am actually syncing new music and calendar entries and stuff.
- MikeSD34, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2When I hit cancel in iTunes during the backup process the sync still happens, it just skips the backup.
- phoomp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2@ alefox
having to hit cancel part way through a sync isn't acceptable and is something I'd expect from Microsoft, not Apple.
- hmunkey, on 07/15/2008, -3/+8Why are people digging you down? The same has happened to me. I'm not sure why, but then again Remote is still new, so give it time for updates.
- fugazied, on 07/14/2008, -2/+4Remote doesn't quite work for me, it seems to have trouble keeping a link with my Library on my macbook pro (using ipod touch). Looks like one of the best apps so far though.
- jinxcy, on 07/15/2008, -9/+3Installer and Cydia continue to offer a far better alternative
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3That is bollox. I should know, I'm using them.
- DaffyDuck, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Agree. I spent a lot of time with a jailbroken phone and while free apps are great, the pay-for versions are simply better. Compare iRadio to Tuner for instance. iRadio is a nice concept that barely works. Tuner works the way iRadio should work.
- jinxcy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Ok what I should of said was better for people who like to spend a lot of time working on there iphone
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3That is bollox. I should know, I'm using them.
- captaindigger, on 07/15/2008, -2/+27Damn 30 bucks for the Dictionary. It's called a jailbreak people.
- santaliqueur, on 07/15/2008, -18/+2People? You a high school teacher or something? Also, it's called "it's called".
Anyway, some people don't want to risk bricking their phone for apps they can get for free (or very cheaply).- captaindigger, on 07/15/2008, -2/+14Yes, I am a teacher can't you tell from my excellent grammar?
- flashback99, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3he can and did accurately guess that you were a teacher
- Taiyoryu, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Hey... if it's good enough for Woz and his lady...
- Dracusis, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Dictionaries are free online.
- flashback99, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1not very bright for a teacher, eh?
- captaindigger, on 07/15/2008, -2/+14Yes, I am a teacher can't you tell from my excellent grammar?
- santaliqueur, on 07/15/2008, -18/+2People? You a high school teacher or something? Also, it's called "it's called".
- scarecrow2k6, on 07/15/2008, -16/+6Every page of Digg has at least two posts of Iphone, seriously what is wrong with us? Remember people gas is now $4+, enjoy!
- Firehed, on 07/15/2008, -2/+5What in the hell does our cheap gas (yes, cheap - the rest of the world pays more than twice that) have to do with the iPhone?
- ispshadow, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1You got buried once already. Go away.
- alefox, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1yeah, but it's like $5 or $6 in Greece
- o5rob5o, on 07/15/2008, -4/+7App store reviews are like dirty dirty hookers that liter the streets and are all the same
- Tenoq, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Liter the streets? Hey, it could be worse... the could pint the streets instead. Or even schooner the streets. That would be nasty.
- Dracusis, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Yet you continue to come back for more, so they must be getting you off.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -1/+22That app store is like a drug...I feel like i'm back in windoze 3.1 installing anything i can find a 5 3/4 floppy, just cause i CAN
- Ragecloak, on 07/15/2008, -10/+4Ok i'm not writing this comment to be funny or anything, I'd just like to know if there's a way to filter my Digg front page results. I dont have an iPhone, nor do I want one, and thus simply dont care about it. But my front page is flooded with iPhone crap...is there any way to keep these submissions off my front page? I keep burying as lame but I guess digg doesnt have the learning technology like tivo has. If someone knows please send me a message
- xero9, on 07/15/2008, -2/+8http://digg.com/settings/topics and uncheck Apple under Technology. Now was that so hard?
- Ragecloak, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2I never said it was hard...typical apple dickheadery. Thanks for the tip
- BEDrocko, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1frustrated much?
- kabitoSDMF, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Has anyone tried the Netter's Anatomy App? I want to try it, but am unwilling to buy it for $40 until I read a review at least. Also, can a person run apps from the App Store with a hacked iPhone?
- beatleman, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2I think there are reviews on the page where you download the App itself. I can't imagine how you can go wrong with it, though, considering how big (and expensive) the actual Netter's book is and what a pain it would be to carry it around. Also, having the ability to quiz yourself with it is huge. I'm considering buying it if the Apple stores in town ever get the iPhone back in stock...
- reformation, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2Yes I heard there is not going to be any more stock, ever. Sorry, you missed out.
- beatleman, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Thanks, reform. Wasn't asking for a smart-ass reply to my comment, but I appreciate you providing one anyway...

- fearofsociety, on 07/15/2008, -0/+13Everyone should grab Aurora Feint if you haven't already. It's a "Puzzle MMO", with some interesting mechanics.
You level up your character by mining (playing the puzzle game) for credits that you use to buy scrolls and books of magic, which do things like slow time, destroy adjacent blocks when you clear a line, or speed up the game. It uses the accelerometer so you can rotate the screen to change the gravity and the blocks will fall into new positions.
Best part is that it's free, which is amazing considering how good it is and some of the crap they are pushing in the app store that should be free but isn't.- Tamant, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Sounds good! Downloading it now...cept I had to switch to wifi to download it cause it's over the 10MB limit wtf
- Dracusis, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2How is it an MMO exactly?
Or are we butchering that term to apply to any kind of "levelling" mechanic now?
- elister, on 07/15/2008, -10/+4GO SEAHAWKS!
- evansls, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1i couldn't get remote to work with my network and ipod touch. i have my firewall set to specific services and applications to itunes.app and i have both my mac and ipod touch on the same network. i even have itunes set to look for ipod touch remotes. i just don't know where i put the number code in itunes when i launch it. ideas anyone?
- fearofsociety, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2When the number appears on your iPhone, a new item will appear in your iTunes called "Device." Click on it, input the number, and it connects your iPhone to that iTunes. You then repeat that for each computer you want to control.
I think that "Device" button only appears when you are in the number generation screen on your iPhone. It's not always there, just when you are setting up Remote. Hope that helps. - zizzo, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I had the same problem and solved it by turning my computer's bluetooth and my iphone's bluetooth on. For some reason this works. Before I did this, I would get the number screen on the phone, but my itunes wouldn't even have a list of devices. Once I turned bluetooth on, it worked. Good luck; Remote is amazing!

- dagamer34, on 07/15/2008, -0/+41Kevin, where is the Digg app? Heck, even Pownce has one! Come on!
- pilot101, on 07/15/2008, -7/+2geez, stop with these top app lists. So far there is only handful of good apps and rest are fraking crap. And the handful of the same apps is coming up over and over. There is only two things i want and app store isn't delivering yet. All in one messenger client like digsby and skype support.
- waydee, on 07/15/2008, -11/+5How many of these do we need?
buried as iphonespam.- Palaceguard, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2http://digg.com/settings/topics
- ajb2015, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3So, suppose I download a "paid" app, locate it in finder or windows explorer, copy the .ipa file. can i give it to a friend and have them use it if they put it in itunes and sync their ipod touch or iphone? in other words, does anyone know if there is drm on the apps?
- Matrixsjd, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5yes, they are DRMed with fairplay.
- Yage2006, on 07/15/2008, -8/+2Yupp all that can be yours for the low low price of 2000$+ that you will pay for the next 2 years of your contract. Awesome.
- eatupmartha, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2I find the NetNewsWire webapp more usable. I would tell you to save your money but the app is free.
- LoudMusic, on 07/15/2008, -1/+12Not a particularly impressive list. He reviewed 5 of over 500. Yay for less than 1%.
- sdipaola, on 07/15/2008, -5/+0Is it just me or do the new apps seem 'masses are asses' candy compared to what we had pre appstore.(for geeks who actually had a need to do something). I waited to not jailbreak my itouch thinking the appstore is only months away for what.
- dizilbdog, on 07/15/2008, -9/+2Honestly I am a huge apple fan, but I think I might jump ship to the Nokia N95. Yeah dig me down, but I like photos and video's more than Apps and a touch screen, and A2DP.
- shank2001, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Buy a real camera, or video camera.
- joseward, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3I went to the Apple store in Tampa Bay on Sunday and the place was a ZOO. People waited hours in long lines. Oh well, I'll wait a couple days until all the fuss dies down.
- mentor972, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1I did a lengthy review as well and worked damn hard on it...
http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_Application_Review - brodiewhen, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4This is the best device I have ever owned. The app possibilities are endless, I'm cracked out checking for new stuff every minute.
Very exciting!! - phoomp, on 07/15/2008, -3/+1Reading the performance reviews, I think I'll stay at 1.1.4 for now.
- elipabst, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4I had some odd results with the app "Local Pick" which gives you lists of restaurants in your location with reviews. With the iPhone it uses the built-in GPS, but on the Touch the whitepaper vaguely says it uses some kind of special WiFi networks to determine your location. So the first time I fire this thing up, it finds the location and I look at the list of restaurants and they're all strange names like van de Lees, van der Hookenen, van de Grift, etc. So I'm like WTF is going on, these all look like names of places in Amsterdam or something. So I look in Google maps and sure enough the "find my location" button seems to think I'm just outside Rotterdam in the Netherlands. What's even odder is that it would occasionally alternate between the Netherlands and some field outside of Topeka Kansas, when in fact I'm in western Pennsylvania. Very strange.
- evansls, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I have the passcode screen open in my ipod touch and I have my ipod selected in itunes under devices, but the screen to enter the code doesn't appear. i have a touch so bluetooth option won't work. weird how everyone can get it to work, but me. meh...
