- moosepile, on 07/05/2008, -5/+62Sadly, there will be enough "OMG iPhone" buyers to negate any consumer revolt. And when they get their overuse charges on the bill? Too late. 3 year contracts are hard to get out of.
Techies understand, but John Q Public doesn't understand why these plans suck, and once they are signed by the cool, fanatic and the rich, it'll be too late for a consumer revolt to happen. Remember, Joe Blow still doesn't know 400MB from Unlimited. "For a PHONE? 400MB is TONS!" No, it's not. Joe Blow is going to set his iPhone to check email every 5 minutes, and he's going to surf "real world" web pages in glee. He's going to use 750MB to 1GB /mo.
The "Consumer Revolt of 2009" is a week away from signing a 3 year contract in 2008. Hence it will be powerless. - Justin125, on 07/05/2008, -2/+40Keep submitting these, the more heard the better.
- SilverBack101, on 07/05/2008, -1/+24That's it. We Canadians are on...STRIKE! No to the iPhone and Rogers!! O_o
- alpha88, on 07/05/2008, -2/+25Oh believe me, I don't need to be told not to buy it.
- davecachia, on 07/05/2008, -2/+23Couldn't have said it any better.
Don't buy it. - gforce051, on 07/05/2008, -5/+23Canada on strike!
Canada says "no more!"
No more neglect! We want respect! That's what we're striking for!
All you bureaucrats and corporate cats can all just take a hike!
It's Canada on strike!
Canada on strike!
From Vancouver to St. John's,
We raise our middle fingers up for you all to sit upon!
And with our fingers up your ass you won't be very psyched!
It's Canada on strike!
And we will not bow or budge.
Our resolve is strong.
We even took three hours to rehearse this striking song!
Canada on strike!
No matter where you are!
If you are Canadian, than you've got do your part!
March out from the halls!
That's right, suck my Canadian balls!
It's Canada on strike!
It's Canada on Strike!
It's Canada on Strike!
It's Canada
On Strike! - xtraa, on 07/05/2008, -1/+19Let's welcome Rogers to globalism: Same prices for all, or get a huge damage on the companies image.
- gfxlonghorn, on 07/05/2008, -6/+2360 Dollars a month for a phone is pretty reasonable for unlimited data.. what the hell do you want?
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+17Oh ye of little faith... I once had the same views, but stories like this are popping up in all sorts of Canadian publications. More and more Canadians are being told these rates suck and they are getting ripped off. And that online petition that everyone says is pointless? It's referenced in every single one of those articles. It's made a difference, and if it keeps up and enough of the public is educated on this, we can really stick it to Rogers this time. Not to mention the fact that Bell is launching the Instinct with a $10 unlimited data plan, expect more and more competition to come up. Rogers will have no choice.
- whitecranberry, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13Great Product. Only problem is that Rogers Communications sucks balls. I love how they said their plan offers "real value".. Yeah, real value when you're the one on the receiving side of the ***** bill they'll be pumping out to you monthly..
Take it from me, do not get into a contract with these douchebages, you'll regret every moment of it. If everyone boycotts this ***** eventually some other carrier will step up and do correctly what Rogers never seems to be able to do. NOT RIP PPL THE ***** OFF. - Mandegar0, on 07/05/2008, -2/+14Rogers is simply a horrible company, they like getting people to sign contracts and lock them in for life, If you sign ur life away on an iPhone contract, you simply are not intelligent.
I made the mistake of getting Rogers High speed internet, and although the service and speed are superb, the price is ridiculous, and now their telling us they are capping our internet service and charging 2$ per gig if we go over? I got charged 68$ extra for last month!
If you want a simple data phone, the HTC touch from Bell makes as a great alternative until rogers gets their act together. - theapiarist, on 07/06/2008, -0/+11The problem in Canada is that the telcos want a free market (which is fine) when it comes to charging fees, but they want a closed market when it comes to competitors. Let's let AT&T, Verizon, Sprint etc. come up here and see how long Rogers continues charging for data like this. Maybe this guy should look up foreign ownership rules in the telecommunication industry.
It's also pretty easy for a Globe and Mail reporter to tell me not to buy an iPhone; should I instead buy from Bell, which has a stake in this newspaper? It's time to overhaul the CRTC not only in the cell phone industry but also television. Honestly, would anyone outside the GTA ever watch the Toronto Sports Network if ESPN was available here? Why are we propping up these multi-billion dollar companies?
Also, anyone arguing infrastructure costs should try using a phone outside of the 13 or so major cities in Canada. Its not like I'm going to get 3G speeds on a phone where I live, I can't even make a phone call from my house. Rogers doesn't give a crap about coast to coast coverage, so why not give out reasonable rates so at least when I head to a major city, I can actually use the damn phone as its supposed to be used. - moo113, on 07/05/2008, -2/+12Instead of the over priced iPhone, I'm looking at picking up the HTC Touch Diamond. 3G, Wifi, GPS, 4GB internal, it's basically HTC's answer to the iPhone. And Telus offers unlimited data plans as well.
- bokep, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9Might be just me, but shouldn't this have been obvious to everyone by the virtue of common sense?
- macwac, on 07/05/2008, -5/+14Apple has always been able to count on their Apple cult to take them through the tough times, but when the fanboys voice their anger I think there is a serious problem that need to be addressed. You really shouldn't hurt your most trustworthy customers... even though the fanboys raise their opinion about everything, it seems this has gotten a lot more attention than usual.
- defunctlife, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8I think the main thing is that now with the internet (you know since 1989) we can easily compare what is happening around the world. We are clearly getting the bunt of the ***** plans out there, minus Denmark of course. But we are the only country not getting even the option for an unlimited plan let alone at a reasonable price.
Rogers will indeed (hopefully) get the bunt of this in the end, the bad press won't just go away for this and will be remembered by consumers for a long time be it for the iPhone or future products, their reputation is being ruined which will equal a lot more profit loss than they can see. New phones will come out on the top Canadian networks and immediately people will not consider Rogers as a fair choice. Here's to thinking short term...I hope people won't buy it, I really do, because I sure as hell won't because it's time to teach a corporations with a monopoly a serious lesson, that the consumer can rule. - thedragon4453, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7Except while not having gas for your car might be crushing to your life, somehow I doubt that not having an iPhone is going to prevent you from having a job and so on.
edit: And as gas continues to go up, people are most definitely going to curb spending on gas. Maybe not to 0, but I promise that you will start to see commute length become a bigger factor in home buying, more call for public transportation, etc. - compgeek, on 07/05/2008, -1/+8after having seen the prices of unlocked iphones here in Canada for months ($700 at a local mall wasn't uncommon) and seeing what the data plans are going to cost I thought wow Rogers you've really screwed yourself knowing them on a 3 year plan the iphone will still cost people $350 or so and the stupid idiots will buy it. I'm sorry but I'd much rather buy an HTC touch or a blackberry curve just as much functionality if not more less money and a better device for web or email or IM. Sorry Apple but with already owning a nano (it's great BTW) and having a laptop that's very portable as well as an Asus Eee for really lightweight ULTRA portable your Iphone is just simply outclassed I'd rather carry me Asus Eee (or full size laptop depending on what I'll be doing that day) a cell phone and my nano and have them do 1 thing well each rather than carry 1 device that tries to do it all and succeeds at none
- superkendall, on 07/05/2008, -2/+8The AT&T family plan for two iPhones is - $120.
- superkendall, on 07/05/2008, -1/+7If by "everything" you mean "you can program it to do anything", then yes. If you can't program OpenMoko might not be the best option.
- Nysul, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Especially with Openmoko's super-fast 2G support. I don't have an iphone (I use an HTC kaiser) but even 3G is too slow. I love opensource but who cares if 3G is proprietary, put it on the damn phone.
- yeskia, on 07/05/2008, -4/+8That solution is too easy and doesn't cost enough.
- Firehed, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5I agree with you in principle... but 400MB goes quite a long way unless you're never near a WiFi connection. Since last June I've only used ~1GB over EDGE - which, of course, IS over edge after all, but email doesn't take up a whole lot of bandwidth (or at least mine doesn't).
If there was no WiFi, that number would look a LOT higher. But there is, and I suspect most people have WiFi at home and at the office which tend to take the majority of your time.
That said, the Canadian rates are far more ridiculous than any others I've seen, and ALL cell rates are crazy high for what you get. - superkendall, on 07/05/2008, -3/+7"You really shouldn't hurt your most trustworthy customers"
Its not Apple setting the prices here though! And these customers, are not Rogers most trustworthy. - NoodlePants, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5Do the one thing that companies can actually hear and see. Don't give them your money. Vote with your dollars.
- gquaglia, on 07/06/2008, -1/+5Could the guy who wrote that article been anymore biased toward Roger's? Maybe if he took their [Roger's] dick out of his mouth, he could have written a fair story. Monopolies are bad, a fact the writer doesn't seem to care about.
- NekoIan, on 07/06/2008, -1/+5I have to disagree with you. I talked to my brother today who's a doctor and not a techie. I told him not to buy an iPhone and he agreed. He'd already heard what a scam Rogers is trying to pull off. If the news has reached him, then it's pretty widespread.
- NavS, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4I would like to have one, but do to pricing, I will remain with my current phone+provider. It was cool that we could have had one, but we can't and it sucks.
- solesoul, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4Even though somebody referenced it already, you did the whole song so you win.
- dysan, on 07/05/2008, -4/+8That's too pessimistic. I signed the petitions but when analysts say they don't think it will help then action like boycotting the product is the best way, money talks.
The same Joe Blows won't buy it in the first place because "they just need a phone" or its for businesses. It will be Techies and Apple fans that have the power to make an impact and not buy it in droves if they have restraint. Rogers already has a negative impression before this iPhone debacle (remember negative option billing), The everyday person who heard or experienced Rogers' crappy customer service already hates them enough to not do anything unless they have no choice. But in this case they do - save your money and just don't buy it for now. Use the phone you have for at least a another month. Let them squirm and see how it feels. It not like they will run out of stock. - HappyScrappy, on 07/05/2008, -4/+8'If Rogers slaps the same price plan on the BlackBerry Bold (which it might), would the uproar be as loud?
I doubt it.
The reason is obvious: The iPhone is made by Apple, and Apple has long nourished an us-versus-them persecution mentality among its faithful, in which the rest of the world is supposed to “hate” Apple for dimly explained motives. The high price of owning a Rogers iPhone just feeds into that paranoia.'
Very interesting comment. First of all, "long nourished"? There were very few Apple users 10 years ago, the company was in deep trouble. Few who use Macs or iPods today can trace any of their opinions to anything Apple nourished long ago.
Additionally, the author states that Apple nourishes a persecution mentality. Then the author goes on to make a non-factual assertion (that if this happened to other phones the uproar wouldn't be as loud) and then says this represents the persecution mentality. Well, since the author made this scenario up from whole cloth, it looks rather like persecution.
Here's why there's such a large uproar compared to the Blackberry Bold or such:
Because there are more people who want this device than the Blackberry Bold. Furthermore, there are more individuals who would like to choose this (as opposed to it being mandated by their IT department) than the Blackberry Bold.
I do agree with the final conclusion. If the prices don't make sense to you, don't buy it. Vote with your dollars. - jo21, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4you can't.. .activation have to be done in the apple store
- aj3289, on 07/06/2008, -0/+4Speak with your [Canadian] dollar!
- iChopPryde, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4dam right the moment Gas his $2 a liter im parking my car in the garage and walking and or biking everywhere or taking the bus I don't care if I will be late for work life will just have to learn to slow down (which could be a good thing) and people will start to smell the flowers more.
- KingFog, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Hardly, with Gas, it's actually something that's necessary. Without gas are cars don't work, which means we don't get to work/school/etc etc We would have to weather those prices.
An iPhone on the otherhand is not THAT important. Our life will not grind to a standstill if we did not own one. Hence why the "If you don't like the price, don't buy" theory actually works. - jwdav, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Good for you - choice of phone is a very personal thing.
The cost of the iPhone is less than 5% of the value of the 36 month contract you'll need to sign. Saving or spending even a few hundred more or less on the phone of your choice is insignificant over three years. - Billistic, on 07/05/2008, -2/+5You know that movie is nearly 10 years old right?
- supermanky, on 07/06/2008, -2/+5I say, sell your children into slavery if you have to. This iphone thing is REALLY WORTH IT...
- S4MF1SHER, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Makes sense.
- mCanada, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3superkendall: I call *****. You can't tell me Apple and Rogers don't talk about rate plans. Apple dissects every inch of their product, from the packaging to retail space to ensure a "positive consumer experience". You're going to tell me that they didn't know Rogers was going to price it at that level before roll out? It's certainly in Apple's interest not to have a negative association between getting ripped off and the iPhone. If you loose the value proposition, the brand as a whole suffers .
- xero01, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3"I'm not your friend guy"
"I'm not your guy buddy"
"I'm not your guy friend"
"i'm not your friend buddy" - Icebird, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4same here Firehed. I've used 1.4GB since June 29th, 2007 and sent 246MB. So about 1646MB total in a little over a year. So I would have been fine under that 400MB/mo plan, but this was EDGE.
With 3G and new applications that use the internet, I might be exceeding that. - pierreb, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3I agree that Canadians should not buy. Actually let's take it one step further. Let's line up at Rogers/Fido on 11 July - review the options with the sales reps and then walk out without buying a phone. This will make the lines longer and reduce the sales that they will get on launch day. The alternative is to get the phone, bring it home and then return it and cancel the service within a few days. Under most provincial consumer laws there should not be a penalty for doing this.
- xero9, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2This is going to kill me. I want one badly when it launches but I think I might ride it out. It's not like things could get worse, right?
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2you know they made movies before 1998 and people are still allowed to quote them, right?
- s1mph0ny, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3The NSA family plan for two iPhones is - $120.
FTFY - phphreak, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2What operating system is it running ...Windows Mobile? no thanks
- FatBird19, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2"I'm Stephen Abootman. Leader of the WGA."

"Yes. The World Canadian Bureau." - NickFury, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3Yeah, this is really a Rogers thing. Apple isn't setting the package prices. We just don't have enough competition here in Canada, so we get screwed.
- acurrie, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2Nokia is going open-source as well. I'm just sayin'...
