- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -12/+169As opposed to those that peacefully explode? :)
- enderu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+74This battle between "A DELL EXPLODED!" and "ANOTHER APPLE BLOWS UP" is annoying. It's the freaking batteries, they've been recalled, and people don't return them. Who cares what manufacturer makes the computers that are using them, the problem lies in the batteries.
- cheztir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+67has anyone just considered the fact that it's just the manufacturer of the li-ion batteries that BOTH dell and apple use? I'm surprised we havent seen more of this over the years.
- UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50Can you imagine if there were SNAKES ON A PLANE!?!?
- MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44People please, PLEASE listen to manufacturer recalls, especially ones that note things exploding.
- wistar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43I'd consider it lame only if no one still owned them.
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28cut this ***** out man... you are giving DooM a bad name!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Where are the incinerated corpses?!?
No digg! - electromagnetic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"has anyone just considered the fact that it's just the manufacturer of the li-ion batteries that BOTH dell and apple use? I'm surprised we havent seen more of this over the years."
The li-ion battery in my MP3 player gets pretty ***** hot from continuous play, so one storing as much energy as a laptop needs to run would handle heat much worse, no doubt explaining the explosions. I mean a small AAA battery goes off like a fire cracker if you chuck it into a bonfire or something, so with a battery that weighs a good deal more I'm quite surprised this hasn't happened more too.
Perhaps they should stop worrying so much about the processor going bang if the battery is going to go up doing a lot more damage! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It was still powered up, just sleeping, so the battery still is in use.
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Prove what? That I exist? That we aren't in some elaborate computer program imitating the real world? That terrorists haven't really taken control of the Apple factories and placed bombs in the laptops?
- deadlierchair, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17People need to be much more aware about product recalls (register your computers! sign up for those mailing lists!) or else someone is going to get hurt. I know it's a bit of extra effort to give up your battery or computer for a little bit, but after looking at these photos, a day or two without a computer is definitely worth the safety precaution. At the very least, when you do the battery exchange you know you're getting a new battery with more life in it! Come on people!
- yoursurogategod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Next thing you know, people will be tossing Apple and Dell laptops during protests instead of molotov cocktails.
- salgiza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Just for the record, my sister's laptop (an iBook) was in the list of recalled batteries last year. The only thing we had to do was to enter the serial number in Apple's webpage, write down our address, and that's it(!)
In a few days we received a new battery. Once we swapped it, we put the old one in the box that came with the new one, and send it back to Apple (the box came with prepaid expenses to send it back to apple via UPS*).
I can't imagine how it could be simpler, and she got a new battery!
* I think it was UPS, it might have been another company. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Unfortunately, it's the same all around, when a Dell laptop battery explodes, all the Apple fanboys come out of the cracks "See, you get what you pay for", "hugs my Mac Book Pro" and all this other ***** - I suppose the battle will never end, just like religious wars will never end, *sigh* - it's a sad world indeed.
- AngryBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"LG or something"
These batteries were manufactured by LG Chem, Ltd. of South Korea.

I hope it happened to this guy:

- Hugues, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If you follow the links on engadget you'll see Apple got praised for recalling the batteries where others do not necessarily do so :
"Well, at least somebody's doing something about their faulty batteries. Looks like after the "silent" MacBook Pro battery recall has officially turned into a full blown 15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Exchange Program. So, got a MacBook Pro from between February through May of this year (2006)? Check your battery out, because if you've got a model A1175 cell with a 12-digit serial number that ends in U7SA, U7SB or U7SC, then sign up, get that replacement shipped out, and send your old one back."
If only that guy had sent his... - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12jschrab: You do know your power supply in your desktop PC could short circuit, catch fire and burn your house down killing you and your family right? Better stop using computers RIGHT NOW BEFORE YOU DIE.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Or it could be one more reason to return your batteries when there is a recall. Or a reason to ignore sensationalism.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Why was this tagged inaccurate?
It looks pretty 'sploided to me.... - ejm508, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's happened to Dells a lot recently, so I'm guessing it's not because of Apple, but the battery manufacturers.
- doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Where can we find more information on the recalled batteries? I own 3 Dell laptops all ordered within the last 6 months, and have more than 5 batteries for them...
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Inaccurate. It didn't explode. Exploding is when there is a big bang and ***** goes flying around. It caught fire. Fire does not equal Explosion.
Doesn't even look like it fully burned through the upper case/keyboard deck. - dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7These stories started recently, I think after that Dell laptop caught on fire and the video was posted. I find it hard to believe that it just started recently because laptops with Li-Ion batteries have been around for quite a while. Did various media outlets just start paying more attention to it?
- DeathStrawberry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What are you talking about? That explosion didn't even destroy the whole laptop. Sure it would cause panic and hurt someone, but it's not like the plane would go down.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9the link on this page actually contains a story, unlike the flickr set link you pasted.
- wildjohn999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Yes to even out all the Dell laptop hate on Digg.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Apple was on top of the recall. This dude willfully ignored it."
Why do you assume that? Apple tried to be as hush-hush about it initially, but thanks to the government bitch slapping them to ACTUALLY ANNOUNCE A RECALL, Apple was 'on top' of it. There's a chance that this was a completely different line of batteries that are starting to explode. - stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@doubleblack
support.dell.com - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6iSEPIC: Apparently you're too clueless to read... he said it would be funny if it happened to the $100 laptops... how exactly does that make him an "***** linux lover"? Or maybe you're just one of those "*****-windows-lovers"? Or an "*****-mac-lover"? Or an "*****-vic20-lover"?
- sipefree, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15The batteries are not made by Apple. They're made by LG or something, according to one of those articles. It's silly to blame Apple and start bringing out the fanboy word whenever something like this happens. Get a grip.
- ArchonSG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I happen to be one of those who does not think that Apple is God's gift to Technology that some people seem to think they are.
They aren't better or worse then any other Brand and I have been using Apple stuff since the Apple II days.
I do agree with the comment that the fan boys on Apple's side can be thick when it comes to being biased (that's what being a fan boy is after all) as to how Apple vs its competitors are viewed but come on guys, the fact is in this case, Apple did allow rather ***** batteries to get pass their QC and shipped in machines bearing the Apple name. As a customer I don't care if the batteries were made in China or Vietnam, its in an Apple machine and I'll take Apple to task not some nameless battery factory that Apple OEM that battery from. - ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This article isn't inaccurate, a PowerBook caught fire (the pictures prove that), possibly because the battery pack exploded inside it. Fan boys should get over the fact Apple can and will screw up plenty now and in the future. The world won't suddenly implode because Apple have done something wrong!
- AngryBoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If you want to get that technical, it wasn't even the Powerbook that exploded. It was the batteries. The non-sensational headline should read "Another recalled battery malfunctions, causes damage to notebook computer". Then the responsible thing to do would be to link to Apple's recall page so that everyone that owns one of these machines would make sure their batteries are safe. Sensational and irresponsible - lack of moderation at its finest.
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Li-On batteries have bad runs. No manufacturer is immune. Apple was on top of the recall. This dude willfully ignored it. His battery exploded. Too ***** bad. End story. No digg.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yeah in the end these cheap batteries are kind of dangerous. Three years ago a woman's third party cellphone battery exploded in Taiwan, severely scarring her face, after that officials recommended to not purchase Made-In-China replacement batteries.
China has very lax standards when it comes to batteries, so leaky stuff there is not uncommon, nor are 'exploding' batteries. But nowadays finding batteries not from China is becoming very expensive and hard to find. - brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Yeah, but 100% of ***** bring that up when well known stats are sighted.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Exploded? This looks like combustion, but far from a "violent explosion" Nevertheless, I'd hate to have this in my lap when it happens...
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Lets stop using anything and everything that has ANY potential to cause an injury. OH... ooops... we can't really do anything at all anymore.
Oh yeah, and to all the idiots that like to flame Dell over the whole battery thing... Dell recalls batteries all the time, and they don't make their own batteries either. - pHr3ak3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6:O holy crap! You mean that when something is recalled because it explodes...it actually explodes? Who the hell cares...if you post pics on the net your smart enough to see a recall that has been around for at least a year. If I worked at Apple, I wouldnt give this guy a dime twoards a new laptop.
- maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It's Apple "people" that make it necessary to have anti-Apple "people".
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ah!!!! it's the return of the hindenbook!!!
why didn't the guy just get the battery exchanged? O_o - Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7My submission got tagged inaccurate because digg is filled with alot of Apple Fanboys, that would sell thier own Soul if it meant sparing Apple from any Humiliation. kinda sad really when people are so crazy over a product they will defend a product exploding!....
ah well 1500+ diggs, i doubt anyone is taking the inaccurate part seriusly - ArchonSG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"This is a picture of Chewbacca..."
It still doesn't change the fact that it was an Apple machine that got fried.
Get over the explosion vs burst into flames argument. The fact is, there was an issue with a rather large batch of bad batteries put into Apple's product and it goes to show that claims of quality and "superior engineering" all comes to naught if in the production process, Quality Control wasn't done.
Who is to blame for that?
Why Apple of course.
Its their brand name that is at stake regardless of who manufacture the parts they use. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3support.dell.com is good, but this is better doubleback:
https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't think I will ever put another laptop on my lap again...I want children, you know...
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5No joke... Mac fans need to learn that no company makes products that are perfect.
