- nfs2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Its not just one person, that is one post filled with people who have that problem, and there are at least half a dozen other posts on that forum about this same problem.
Still, i'd like to think most macbooks are fine, but random shutdowns are not cool - redhatcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"It's only because the computer is made by Apple that people are crying out like this."
Exactly. With Apple's boasting of superior hardware and the hefty price tag consumer pays for a device that "just works", the problems should be nil. The problems are quite plentiful however. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, since Apple touts itself as being a quality provider problems such as these should be publicized. Apple's action is to freeze the discussion topic and blame everyone else. Apple has become the Packard Bell of the 21st Century while charging premium prices.
- darkshard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a serious problem actually. I have a week 21 MacBook, and the random shutdowns just started happening on July 17th. The Apple thread now has some odd 13,000 views and 475 odd people complaining about this. No, Apple still does not have a fix, and no, they haven't addressed this in any public fashion. If you are thinking about buying a new MacBook, make sure that the serial number starts 4H625.... Every macbook 4H6{19-23}... could possible have this issue. From the thread, those Macbooks made in the week 25 production run, haven't exhibited this behavior yet. There is no general consensus on the issue at the moment, but the most reasonable explanation is that it is either the logic board, or the 10.4.7 upgrade that has hosed up the firmware.
Regardless, if you want to crash you MacBook in fornt of an Apple Genius, the easiest way is to run "yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null " in a single terminal window. You will see the MacBook crash in about 60 seconds, if not sooner. - xsong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had this macbook for 18 days and I absolutely like it. It started to have this problem this morning when I waked it up from deep sleep. It just shutdown without any prompt and all my unsaved jobs were lost. It had this problem this afternoon again. It start to irratate me.
- nfs2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This problem is just getting bigger, that post has almost 200 replies now, and new posts are constatly poping up.
My theory is that the heat, over a short time, damages the internal guts of the macbook causing this problem. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the new logic boards was for macbook pros because of the whine issue (which I have never witnessed in all the mbp's I've seen).
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1LUcky this hasnt hit my MB yet but still worrying, its pretty certain Apple are gonna start shipping MacBooks with different logic boardsvery soon, in fact they probably already have as the initial batch as we all know are problem ridden
- relientkkid07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope that I dont run into this problem, I ordered a new 1.83 macbook today but I was suprised to see that the estimated shipping was 5-7 buisness days and not the 1-3 days that it was yesterday. Maybe i got lucky today and they are working on all of the issues that people are having I will not incounter.
I can only cross my fingers - YoNoSoyTu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg this one too: http://digg.com/apple/Macbooks_shutting_down_on_their_own
It have more chances to be on the front page. - wavethenavel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is no link to a sensationalist article. This is a link to the actual discussion board on the Apple.com support site where people are trying to hash this out. My laptop has been in the shop itself for 2 weeks waiting on a part because there are so many logic board repairs. I am NOT an apple basher. I LOVE my mac, in fact my entire life/work is managed by it. That's why it's such a bummer to have this happen. We hope to raise the awareness of this discussion thread (which happens to be the most active by far of any discussion threads in the MacBook category).
- dillera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My 2G white MB just started with two random shutdowns today. Never had any problems before this.
The machine was compiling some stuff, so it may have been hotter than normal.
system log shows error -72, not 82.
I had to hold the powerbutton till the machine beeps- which locks the cpu at 1G I think. - theodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see how people can say that just two people have this issue. Did anyone even look at that thread who commented. I've never seen a thread that long on that forum.
I LOVE my MacBook. It's an incredible machine. But the fact is after two months of flawless use it shuts off ALL the time now. It's completely unacceptable. No one here is or who owns one is taking a shot at Apple. We just need our machines fixed so we can stay productive.
If anyone has this or sympathizes with folks in this situation just digg the article. That's all. I've dugg plenty of articles like this for gear I don't have because these issues need to be addressed. The early adopters shouldn't also be beta testers (as they all are now days.)
Anyway, this issue is real and it sucks. I've had data loss. It's an inconvenience and it's NOT made up. Just read through some of the thread. - kaispreis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok everyone, the random shutdowns just started happening to my Macbook yesterday after 2 months of perfect operation. (A note to all the doubters: If its not happening to you then great...but don't act like you know other peoples' problems. And to those who are actually having this problem, my suggestion is to just ignore those who doubt it...) It seems that if you turn the computer on by HOLDING DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 5 SECONDS, it will start up and run without turning off. After holding the power button for about 5 seconds to start up, there will be a LOUD beep...once you hear this beep, let go of the power button and let it start. This is the only way I'm able to use my Macbook without it randomly shutting off. At first, it will only use 1 core...but after some time, the other core will turn on. It's very strange... Let me know if anyone else has the same experience.
About bashing Apple...its a touchy issue for me. I love Apple, there's no other product like it and I think they're an amazing company. In fact, I own a lot of stock in the company and want to see them do well... However, that being said I think that they've taken a turn for the worse with their release of the Macbook and Macbook Pro. I've owned both, and both have had more problems than any other computer I've ever owned in 15 years of being a computer junkie. I don't know what to say about it, except it really sucks... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It's only because the computer is made by Apple that people are crying out like this. If this was a computer made by Dell, you'd send it back and get a new unit, maybe post on a forum but NOBODY would Digg it!!! Jeez!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Me too. This is just another sensationalist article on digg. Buried for inaccuracy because this is ONE incident out of THOUSANDS of these things that have been sold.
- eboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2i have had the macbook for over a month and have not nil problems...I love it..
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1power saving feature. Did you know 99.6% of ex apple employees go into politics?
