- BagginsBoy, on 12/16/2007, -12/+216Dugg for the "This GPS is so fat..." jokes
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -5/+144thats what she said
- chubbybubba, on 12/16/2007, -5/+143I was in an elevator the other day and a sign said Maximum Load 350 lbs OR iphone GPS.
- winnopeg, on 12/16/2007, -8/+135It's not THAT big. Going off the description, I was expecting something the size of a car. :/
- petard, on 12/16/2007, -4/+117Thats because it is external and requires all sorts of crap to make it interface. They have GPS chips about the size of a microSD card if they are to be integrated.
This is just people trying to justify their purchase lacking GPS. - DariusMonsef, on 12/16/2007, -2/+92Big peripherals need love too!
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -6/+87Bull! Take a look at the Helio Ocean (equipped with GPS) it is smaller than the iPhone
- wastern, on 12/16/2007, -1/+45of course a hacked together add-on some guy made on his kitchen table is going to be bigger then something engineered into his phone. This isn't why it wasn't included. Other phones have GPS aren't aren't that big, the size of the iPhone wouldn't really change if it were added
- Bitties, on 12/16/2007, -2/+38Still smaller than Zach Morris' phone.
- fanboydcs, on 12/16/2007, -3/+37I would love to know how they built this, Sell them or give us schematics and where to buy the components! I can see this device being intergraded into my iPhone car charger.. (I would only use it in the car)
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -6/+36and a battery that lasts about four seconds.
- ryanknapper, on 12/16/2007, -0/+28Why not a Bluetooth receiver in my pocket and a regular sized iPhone?
- rudy23, on 12/16/2007, -1/+25GPS itself does not transmit any location signals. It can only hone into your current location. Now since its a phone you are correct the phone could transmit that data to ATT.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -2/+22Oh wow, I thought you were posting making fun of that guy telling everyone to leave Britney alone, then I saw that you were clak and realized you were being totally serious...
- SSUK, on 12/16/2007, -5/+24Tin foil helm team, ASSEMBLE!
- ace4261991, on 12/16/2007, -2/+21thats actually a great idea to integrate this into the car chargers for the iphone.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -7/+25So if you are on the run from the law just ditch your GPS phone... And the gps wont really matter because they can still alert authorities where you are with triangulation.
Maybe it would just be easier to quit smoking pot? - inactive, on 12/16/2007, -12/+28thats what she said
- noahhoward, on 12/16/2007, -1/+17Hey nice gadget, I bet it cost you a lot in R&D can I have it free?
- mountaincable, on 12/16/2007, -7/+22Since when is it necessary to triangulate on and track down pot smokers?
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+16Big peripherals are like mopeds, they are fun to ride until your friends find out!
- joshrice, on 12/16/2007, -1/+15And they said reading comprehension is dead...
- emailer33, on 12/16/2007, -0/+13"Big peripherals need love too!"
But they gotta pay - rikwakefield, on 12/16/2007, -2/+15It should have in-built GPS really. This and the lack of video recorder really stops the iPhone from being almost-perfect.
- dallyp, on 12/16/2007, -2/+15Hell doesn't freeze over.
- EtherGnat, on 12/16/2007, -3/+15You're right, but I'm going to digg you down for being an ass. I have a Freedom Bluetooth GPS that's barely bigger than a box of matches and fits nicely on my keyring. If this is going to plug directly into the iPhone it won't need a battery or bluetooth, so it could be even smaller.
- samadam, on 12/16/2007, -0/+12what? that makes no sense. Of course if it was integrated and used the same antenna and was on board it would be much smaller. Be reasonable.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -12/+23Your mom?
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -3/+14Even I am digging you up. I didn't realize that I was notorious.
- AdamMPkins, on 12/16/2007, -3/+13...and yet the LG Voyager, which isn't MUCH fatter than the iPhone, comes standard with GPS, I wonder how THEY did it.
- rudy23, on 12/16/2007, -1/+10I love the fact that it looks like a tumour. thats hardcore.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 12/16/2007, -0/+8because you can't wait for never.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+9***** GPS chips can be much smaller or as in the case of Iphone the tracking is done with triangulation software...I thought digger's were nerds/geeks?
I guess they are just gullible. - inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+8Dude you banged my sister??? Damn thats nasty!
- Zarsk, on 12/16/2007, -0/+7Because the iphone BT is only for headsets :( and not even stereo at that
- zip22, on 12/16/2007, -1/+8its actaully bigger than the iphone
4.33 x 2.20 x 0.86 = 8.19 cubic inches
4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 = 4.97 cubic inches
even taking the rounded shape of the ocean into the equation wouldn't make up for its thickness. - ShrimpCrackers, on 12/16/2007, -1/+8Thing is if they put in AGPS or another 2G/3G reliant system, it would've been tiny as heck, and since its now mostly relegated to 1 chip it would've cost them no more than $10-20 to put in. I've got a 1.5 year old phone from Samsung that is just 4 mm thick that I used to use in Asia that has AGPS, and it works beautifully.
- pilot3033, on 12/16/2007, -0/+7have fun waiting a decade ;)
- zweben, on 12/16/2007, -3/+10Since when is half the stuff the government does necessary?
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -8/+15My Verizon phone is roughly half the size of the iPhone and has functional GPS... Oh and it makes video, which I can assign as the wallpaper on both the inside and outside screens;)
And plays Tetris and Packman.
And has a talk time of about 8 hours, and a standby time of about a week.
And can send pictures/video to other phones...
And is the best mp3 player I have ever owned..
With live tv...
... - g4blows, on 12/17/2007, -1/+8I think he was saying that why he was paranoid
- BassXXX, on 12/17/2007, -0/+6Well, it's not fat on the N95.
Today's Diggers' stupidity is brought to you by the Mac fever. - starf, on 12/16/2007, -1/+7Probably battery. But also maybe the "wouldn't really change" not being 'wouldn't change'.
From what I've heard from apple friends, Steve Jobs decided on a size and wasn't willing to let it get bigger for anything. - FDL1, on 12/16/2007, -0/+6It uses assisted-GPS along with most/all other VZNavigator Verizon phones. AT&T probably should have thrown that in along with the visual voicemail tweaks on the back-end.
The Voyager is the same thickness as the iPhone? (WxDxH)
Voyager: 2.1 x 0.7 x 4.6 in
iPhone: 2.4 x 0.7 x 4.6 in - BlackStrain, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6I bet they just upgrade it and drop the old version keeping it at $500 for the phone. Apple likes its profit margins.
- Jahweh, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6You boob
- Zergo, on 12/17/2007, -0/+5my blackberry pearl 8130 is smaller than the iphone and it has GPS.
- noahhoward, on 12/16/2007, -5/+10And has a crap, crippled Verizon OS I bet. Lets see a link to the make and model please.
- noahhoward, on 12/16/2007, -2/+7Crippled OSX sounds a hell of a lot better than the ***** Verizon saddled me with. Also Verizon does not offer GPS, Verizon offers VZ Navigator which requires the enhanced network to work (which is hardly available everywhere) and uses phone towers to triangulate position, that is why the phone can remain small.
- theuber1337, on 12/16/2007, -1/+5That's already trademarked, expect a subpoena in the mail tomorrow with Steve's name on it.
