- alpha88, on 06/07/2009, -3/+31He obviously hasn't used google or played around with the OS much.
You use spotlight from the folder you want to search, with the string ".jpg", and search filenames only. It's not rocket science.
Also, Flip4Mac solves the WMV issue, and all cameras and camcorders (as long as they use USB or Firewire) are compatible with Macs. They may not have proprietary Mac software, but the images/videos can still be transferred without any hassle. - inactive, on 06/08/2009, -3/+28Buried ...last thing we need is another Mac vs. Win vs. Unix article.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -2/+24Some of these are wrong. You can easily search for only JPEG files in a folder, for example.
And I may be wrong, but surely all modern cameras are compatible with Mac. Don't they all use a standard protocol for transferring video through USB/FW? - NathanCH, on 06/08/2009, -0/+17"That age-old question is as relevant as ever."
No it's not. - Kstha1, on 06/08/2009, -0/+11the "Mac vs Windows" argument is prob the best marketing setups ever created..some people will write whole novels on why either is better or worse..
its just operating systems. Get what suits your needs/budget and thats it lol dont cry and praise ***** that your not profiting from. - Falldog, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8Hey Digg, God here. Just wanted to let you know that I use both OSs. They each have their pros and cons. Neither of them are perfect, I'd know *godwink* Trying to be a fan boy of one or the other is just douchy.
- ssttuu, on 06/07/2009, -2/+10Being allowed to work for CNET and writing that rubbish? What planet is this guy on. All his Mac issues could be resolved with a quick Google or Bing! Either he wrote this article for free tech support or the Brooke Crothers should be the next on CBS "to be sacked list".
- rebotfc, on 06/07/2009, -3/+10Whats wrong with navigating to the folder then typing "kind:JPEG" in the search bar?
- artissco, on 06/08/2009, -0/+6and God replied, get a Life!
- koanage, on 06/08/2009, -2/+7"i tried to use another operating system but i couldn't figure it out" wah wah wah
- DouglasQ, on 06/08/2009, -1/+6and God said: What the ***** is a computer?
- kyrios23, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5Buried for .... is as relevant as ever
- Warom, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5The truth is there is not really any advantages to using one or the other (security, programs, speed, usability are all pretty much the same), really, it is which one you prefer using. Also, why do people like defending Apple so much? The way I see it, criticize them and you will get better software, for example - people complained about copy and paste on the iPhone, now it is becoming a reality. This same thing goes for Microsoft - although, they seem less connected with their user base.
- DouglasQ, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5vs. GODZILLA!
- wastern, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4the JPG thing was about as far as I got, it made my head hurt and now want to go to sleep. He is writing an review before taking the time to learn anything at all, don't fault the OS, he should fault his ***** brain and google skills.
For anyone interested, go to the folder you want to search. type "kind:jpg" in the search box and click the folder name in the bar that drops down instead of "This Mac"
You can also say "kind:image" to get all image formats - undervalued, on 06/07/2009, -8/+12And all god did was write on stone tablets...
So Moses assumed Mac. - Angostura, on 06/08/2009, -1/+5I got to this line:
"I can't use the OS X "Mail" client because it can't run the email programs that I use."
And decided the guy was clearly a moron not worth bothering with. - 03fb, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3And so God spoke to moses "it depends really"
- dodger2020, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3You two should probably re-read it then. He didn't say he was searching for only jpeg files. He was searching for files in a specific folder full of only jpeg files.
The usb thing I'm inclined to agree with though. I find it hard to believe that any camera in the past few years won't work with the mac.
And wastern, I don't think he read the article at all. Just a mac guy playing off the mis-read of the reddit guy. - GeorgeWKush, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3I put XP on it a month after I bought it, two and a half years ago and it worked better than Tiger.
- reverant, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Basically, if you don't know what you're doing and willing to pay the extra price, macs are where it is at.
If you're a smart tech savy user who knows how to build an awesome computer out of parts you bought online, you're probably going to be just fine with a PC and have a better bang for the buck. - alpha88, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3What USB hard drive camera isn't compatible out of curiosity?
- undervalued, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2How do you know I didn't mean to write it that way?
- miquonranger031, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2And he said, "WHO THE ***** CARES?! The human race gets an opportunity to speak with its creator, and you ask me to be an impartial judge in a comparison of two operating systems! Ugh. I'm so ashamed in what I've created. *kills self*"
In short: WHO THE ***** CARES - GeorgeWKush, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2How? With the discount I got on the laptop it cost the same as anything else with the same specs. It only cost a little more after I bought XP, but it's worth it for having a dual boot. Not to mention how good the computer is built or how easy it is to take apart. The first time I spilled a drink on it, I had it open in 5 minutes. And I was pretty drunk.
- Misterberu, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3vs. KING KONG... WITH ROCKETS!!!
- rezivor, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2This was more of a "How to show I am clearly biased" article
- binarymelon, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2I think moron is a little strong, but I'd really like to know what he was trying to say there.
- swimtwobirds, on 06/08/2009, -2/+3no, you didn't.
- Orsenfelt, on 06/08/2009, -1/+2Congratulations, you just cost yourself a small pile of money.
- rafacst, on 06/08/2009, -2/+3So... In that scenario, Linux is Judas and stabbed Jesus' back? I don't get that metaphor.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Oh yay, a mac vs pc thread.
- DouglasQ, on 06/08/2009, -2/+3YOU MADE THE JOKE EVEN FUNNIER BY CHANGING IT SLIGHTLY!!!
- PaulRay, on 06/08/2009, -1/+2Mac better, blah blah blah... No! Windows better, blah blah blah. Wait, I use Nix and blah blah blah.... NO!! You mother sucks Windows blah blah blah!!! Well, you don't have a Blahblahblah!! Blah all of you!!!!
These sites and "comparisons" are all the same. Guess what? It's an OS for a Computer, the one that works for you is the best... for YOU. It really doesn't matter. I like Linux, my buddy loves his Mac, my IT friend uses Windows through a nix server. We're all still friends. No OS is "The Best" just like no Hair Color is "The Best", it's all subjective. - Orsenfelt, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1CNET should be punished and taken offline for 1 week for allowing this ***** to be posted.
- kanningt, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1nice novel. too bad everyone just scrolls past it
- Myztry, on 06/08/2009, -1/+2Which desktop OS is better is neigh irrelevant. People don't spend their time inside the OS desktop interface. The desktop itself is just a glamorous simplistic file manager and application launcher that is passed on the way to the browser, the programming IDE, the business accounts package, or whatever. Much like Apple Macintosh and Commodore Amiga pioneered for the mass consumer in the early 80's.
Photoshop may be the killer app on Windows, but it doesn't mean Windows is better. It means better software is written for it, due to critical mass. It's not Microsoft Photoshop in case no one has noticed. The one thing Bill Gates really got right wasn't that he could write good software (Anyway else old enough to remember how dismal the software was when Bill was still writing?) but the fact OTHER people could write really good software.
You look at the amazing hardware enabled by software drivers. Microsoft doesn't invent the hardware or write the driver software. OTHER companies do. Microsoft takes the credit but why? Microsoft has never even produced a computer. They are merely software parts suppliers. Those hardware gurus would do the same regardless of which operating system had critical mass. Microsoft does not cause that through some amazing talent. It's just in the right position to receive the benefits.
The people who work at Google, Microsoft, Apple, whoever are for all intensive purposes the same people. A hell of a lot of them have worked for several if not all the companies. A company is after just a business structure and incapable of creating anything on it's own. What becomes important is not how 'smart' a company is, because they are basically equal, but what artificial measures they can leverage with fiscal might to stifle the fact they aren't in fact any better than the others. The only important difference is culture and intent.
Anyway, you might say Microsoft is the snowball and it's just going to keep getting bigger and better. That is not the case. Watch what happens when Microsoft suffers lack of competition. It rolls to a stop. When they lack anyone to follow, things like Vista happen. They are not leaders who form markets, they are poachers waiting for trails to be blazed. So, if you want a better Windows then support those who do things differently - it's the only way Microsoft is going to get anything to follow. - Angostura, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1Damn you binarymelon, you are completely right.
- ScottyDelicious, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1"And all *D*og did was bark on rawhide tablets..."
No, now it's corrected. - dasluvaluva, on 06/08/2009, -1/+1"And all *G*od did was write on stone tablets..."
Corrected. - wipis, on 06/08/2009, -1/+1I would have to check since I don't use it anymore but things like the Kodak Easy share software might not work with a mac. And just plugging in the camera with USB doesn't work unless you have the right drivers. Camcorders on the other hand are generally universal now. But yeah his larger point was that not all hardware works with a Mac. Not to mention the higher price of some hardware for a mac.
- jamesdew, on 06/08/2009, -1/+1I am one of those anti mac pc loving types and even I thought the 'issues' pointed out in this article were stupid.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+0Can you be more specific with what he means? You can choose to search for files WITHIN a folder, regardless of the filetypes. Am I missing something?
- Awezing, on 06/08/2009, -2/+2Linux*
In essence, Mac is Unix-based too. - ZipperSeven, on 06/08/2009, -1/+0Some of the comments are better than the article itself:
by Mr. Dee June 7, 2009 2:49 PM PDT
I want you all the see my response.
Windows PC's are better because they work, boot fast enough and are very secure. Windows Vista comes out of the box ready for whatever task the throws at it. There is a larger degree of application and hardware compatibility. Everybody knows Windows, everybody uses Windows, including Mac users, either through BootCamp or a virtualization solution. Please stop this nonsense! - blorc, on 06/08/2009, -3/+1The camera thing is not entirely true. Mini-disc cameras are not compatible, at least not natively. There may be software available (of which I'm unaware) to remedy that issue, but otherwise they're not compatible. Most USB hard drive cameras are compatible (not all), and pretty much any MiniDV FireWire camera is compatible.
- brianpocock, on 06/08/2009, -7/+5And God replied, I think you should give up now, there are two types of people in the world, those that want to look pretty but not actually get any work done, and those who do.
- ifallen, on 06/08/2009, -5/+2yes, well... tiger is old, support is moving on.
and unlike in windows world, we don't have to run from update in mac land,
they are actually a GOOD thing. - GeorgeWKush, on 06/08/2009, -9/+6I put XP on my MacBook Pro and it works better than OSX Tiger.
- fasda, on 06/08/2009, -10/+1Windows try getting good game performance on 600$ budget
