- polyp2000, on 09/01/2009, -1/+28Superb Advertisement disguised as a blog post!
"Jim says he is sure he'll be renewing MobileMe when it's time." ..
Except the last line which really gives the game away ....
N. - ChloeMS, on 09/01/2009, -3/+15Can't imagine the look on the thief's face when he answers the knock at his door and the police are there, handcuffs in hand with a big s**t eating grin!
- GagarinY, on 09/01/2009, -1/+12Smells like Apple marketing to me!
- Assassinanus, on 09/18/2009, -1/+12I bet that it had been sold to someone else. I feel sorry for the person who bought it.
- garretwd, on 09/01/2009, -0/+10Jim, ol, buddy, ol pal: Applications>Photo Booth.
But props for ambient creepiness anyways. - NSResponder, on 09/01/2009, -0/+10I'm boggled at the idea of any thief being stupid enough not to just format the disk of any machine they stole.
-jcr - kavlo26, on 09/01/2009, -1/+11Smart move by Jim. I remember there was a story I think last year about the woman who logged into mobileme and did something the same. Except, she turned on the macbook's webcam and took a picture of the people. haha.
- heresy_fnord, on 09/01/2009, -0/+6Not by default but there is software that allows you to watch what is going on, on your computer without notification that you're doing it. The IT department where I used to work had it.
- MacParrot, on 09/01/2009, -1/+6If they were smart they wouldn't need to break into people's homes.
- nxusername, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4I know, several of these stories have popped up over the last few days. I'm sick of large corporations doing this. Posers!
- Dr3w, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4I'm rooting for Jim, but I'm against broadcasting to crooks how we're able to catch them. This is a nice little feature that can possibly get expensive gear back, and I'd like it to keep working.
- socrates17, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3The average non-digg/slashdot computer users don't even know how what 'formatting a drive' means.
Average people expect to go the store, buy a computer and just have it work. I really think you are over-estimating the knowledge of the average person (and the average thief more-so). - MacParrot, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3They'll certainly lose the machine. Actually Jim wouldn't get it back either until any and all prosecutions related to this crime was resolved. Held for evidence.
- BossKey, on 09/01/2009, -1/+3That concern is a form of "security through obscurity," which means we can't rely on it. Not talking about it on Digg is not going to prevent thieves from investigating current consumer level remote control technology built into the most popular OSs. That is, for the few thieves who will even bother to think of and investigate that. Given that, we should not stop stories like this from being published.
- excitive, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2Mac saves the day? (But not for the thief lol)
- MacParrot, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2You shouldn't be ashamed of that. I mean it's not my thing, but if that's what you enjoy...
- kanojo1969, on 09/01/2009, -1/+3Anyone who makes a habit of stealing lappies will have a fence to offload them quickly. Usually the fence has some prerequisites in terms of the state of the machines, or if the thief is an idiot, the fence will do it himself.
Random thieves who steal a laptop as a crime of opportunity and sells it to a guy in the pub, no the disk isn't formatted.
Professional thieves who do 30 to 50 laptops a week and have a proper network to dispose of them, yes, the laptop will be clean as a whistle right away. And it's not just Mafia, anyone who's doing crime for a living. - mctom987, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2Acceptable does not mean correct.
- stuffradio, on 09/02/2009, -0/+1Go troll somewhere else mistakoolaidguy. Go drink some koolaid.
- tjallen, on 09/01/2009, -0/+1http://digg.com/apple/Stolen_MacBook_Victim_Uses_i ...
I remember another one where the computer was set up so that when the thieves used Photo Booth, it automatically uploaded the pictures to her online account and there was an online hunt to find them. - kanojo1969, on 09/01/2009, -1/+1Well, I don't know for sure but technically the service could record the machine's mac address which is unique, so if the thief formatted the drive, and reinstalled OS X, it's possible, but I would guess there's a few things that would miraculously have to be set up correctly, such as various checkboxes called 'allow this computer to be seen from my mobileme' and/or security credentials.
My gut feeling is that doing a format and reinstall will be sufficient to protect against this type of thing. IN the future, however, as devices that do this are more prevalent and many of them will configure themselves automatically, it will be more and more difficult to use devices that are stolen on public networks.
Anyway, nothing in the story was 'incredible', unless you count software doing what it's supposed to do as incredible. Lame; buried. - ChrisTek, on 09/01/2009, -2/+2You sure are cynical.
- soley, on 09/01/2009, -1/+1That was kinda my thinking on the whole thing. Should have spoofed his mac address.
- JerrySun, on 09/01/2009, -1/+1The use of "their" is up in the air, and it is already acceptable in Britain. It's not incorrect.
- soley, on 09/01/2009, -2/+2I don't use mobileme at all, so I'm asking a real question.
Also, I'm too tired/lazy too google it.
If the dumb thief would have formatted the drive, would this have made Jim unable to find him? I'm assuming yes, but I don't know if there's something that Apple has that would automatically find him.
If this is true, which I doubt, he should have installed linux. - BossKey, on 09/01/2009, -2/+2I want to know how many thieves would ever bother to format a drive. I know when I do it, I consider it a chore to have to wipe and install. No desperate crackhead, and especially, no "dumb thief" is going to have the patience for such a menial technical task that would simply delay the selling of the goods for cash. I can see organized crime doing it, though. Them and very rare ultrageek street thieves.
- JerrySun, on 09/01/2009, -1/+0It means that it isn't incorrect, so there's no harm in using it.
- mistakoolaidguy, on 09/01/2009, -6/+3You see, you can't screen share on the pc, so because it was Mac, something actually got done.
- ahowle, on 09/01/2009, -12/+1**Will the owner get his/her Mac back**
This has been a message from the grammar police. - Shamusjp, on 09/01/2009, -15/+2Gay!
