- hellogoodbye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Let me put this simply:
my parents can afford an ipod for me as a gift.
I am broke. - ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Another fun method would be to use Lego bricks to do the trick--- getting creative with this thing is fun. Someone should start up a site of homemade iPod accessories.
- catchneyez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Or how bout you just lay your ipod on the table and plug the cord into your laptop. You could even hook up some speakers into the 1/8 inch jack that comes standard on the ipod. Wow, the possibilities are endless.
(end sarcasm) - Blizzardman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14If you have an apple laptop and a 5g ipod you definately are not a poor person.
- SenatorPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This is a shameless plug, but a few weeks ago, i made an instructable on how to make a really cool lego dock based on the exact same thing, with a step by step guide. Here it is: http://www.instructables.com/id/ENH2RDXWSEEQZJJAC6/?ALLSTEPS
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I actually just assumed for $400 you got the dock with it. But that'd make sense.
- cogsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Or you could just plug the provided cable into your iPod, then plug it into your computer and lay the iPod on the same flat surface your computer is sitting on. I mean it bears saying that if you have a flat surface you can set this box up on that's within cable-length of the computer you're connecting to, you've got the space to set the iPod down. I may be a bit old fashioned but this method has worked for me up until this point.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Where are those $400 iPods you're talking about?"
Until recently they were oh I don't know, everywhere that sells iPods. The price came down less than a week ago, stop being such a pedant. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Good day to you sir! Use the ***** reply button! Cheerio!
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That was rather, anti-climactic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@kasted
get your lawyers mate you are sooo getting sued - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Poor people have Shuffles: Marked as inaccurate.haha.
- timmyallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6your not really that poor when you have the other gear that are in the photographs.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8My house is a cardboard box :(
- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I actually just registered diyipod.com
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So, you can't afford a dock... but you could afford an iPod and an iBook?
That's like saying you could afford to buy a car, but couldn't get windsheild wiper fluid. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You could make a really nice dock out of wood. An old candy or tea tin might do the trick as well. As would a nicer cardboard box.
- halldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you won't get sued as long as you comply with their requests to give them the domain...ipod is a trademarked name
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I got a generic iPod dock for 5 bucks.. seriously now.
It even has line-out. - 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The GhettoDock still lacks stereo plug and RCA output.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2p-p-p-p-p-powerboo...
um, I mean i-i-i-i-iPod Dock! - d2nd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2staring at a genuine Apple dock, no IR receiver
- EagleX, on 10/12/2007, -13/+15Let me get this straight, you can afford an iPod, but you can't afford the dock?
Please, I can't be the only one... - hellogoodbye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We're not poor.... come on now! haha
obviously we could get one if we wanted too, i just titled the story that way. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe you should just ask for a dock for your birthday?
- dpollitt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is an alright idea and all. But I really don't see the point in making a ipod dock in the first place. Does it really help to have a non video ipod standing up anyways? Do you just sit and watch it say "Do Not Disconnect"?
I think a much more practical purpose for the cardboard and tape would be to integrate it into a desk made entirely out of cardboard. For example:
http://dpollitt.googlepages.com/desk - bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Doesn't look like you can take the cord with you though. Gotta bring the whole box.
- dpollitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I understand, I was just joking about watching the disconnect screen. But the uses for a dock seem limited especially for the price.
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2geezz.. the guy has a Mac and iPod but could not afford a Dock? get real.. hehehe..
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can use an iPod while it's plugged and charging, just eject it from iTunes.
- carlosfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, what you need to do is sell your ipod on ebay. Then take that money and buy a dock. And you have your self a nice dock.
- jediorange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So you can afford $1300+ on a MacBook and iPod, but can't afford the $39 for a dock? Yeah, I don't think so. Bad title.
- nbritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neat idea. Now just build an IR receiver into it and you'll have yourself a genuine Apple dock. :)
- giangsing7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could just use a tape cassette case.
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lot of people say they 'don't see the point.' That is the point... that there really is none. I mean, some people would make this and put it to good use but most people would make this just so they can say "look at my cardboard iPod dock."
- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2LOL, this is cute, something I have have to make just for ***** 'n' giggles.
But really, I just use the jack to hook it to some badass little speakers I have that has a bass box and stuff. Works just fine and I'm happy. - mtwmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAMN!!!!!!! That is messed up. Maybe I'll make na iPod dock out of an old McDonalds soda cup.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I bought a used iPod dock for $10.
- hellogoodbye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I meant no disrespect. I apologize. I just didn't title the story in a literal sense.
- davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always wondered what that piece of plastic that comes with the iPod was for (that piece of plastic that looks like half of a dock).
- Soave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actionscript, what's your problem? Who cares if he's not ACTUALLY poor? You said it yourself, you were going to Digg it anyway.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's not a bad idea! .. It would even be possible to leave the cassette in there (cutting it up a bit) .. that would be a fun iPod dock!
- scottpatricks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is ***** retarded, just like ipod docks. I can do everything an ipod dock does, only it's horizontal... it would look so much more sexy if it was vertical, and my friends would like me more if it was vertical... what to do??? I know, build a ***** ipod dock, or buy one. Both incredibly lame wastes of money!!!!
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has to be done. I'm going to find a suitable box when I get home :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're poor you should be looking at things that arent made by apple.
- hellogoodbye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Then I apologize. i didn't mean anything by it. I'm sorry if it was offensive to anyone.
- hellogoodbye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2alright, let me make myself clear:
I was HAVING FUN with this. we CAN afford a dock, i just haven't asked for one. i decided to make one for fun just for the hell of it.
ok. - fbradyirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a cool idea. I don't know why people are whining about money above. This is for FUN! As ericeman said its something to show to others for a laugh. I created one myself last night using my Airport Express box:
www.flickr.com/photos/finbarr_brady/sets/72157594294735340/ - hellogoodbye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Again, the title isn't supposed to be taken literally, it was just a way to describe that you can make the dock out of nothing. I'm sorry if i worded it wrong....
