- rolf, on 07/01/2008, -1/+82And people on the internet create around 1000 fully nonfunctional mockups for every product Apple is rumored to release...
- gmoney1, on 07/01/2008, -1/+73I wanted a picture.
- avions, on 06/30/2008, -2/+58Apple creates 10 fully functional prototypes for every product release...
- chickcomedy, on 06/30/2008, -35/+86keyboard is unnecessary
touch is the way of the future - pensel, on 07/01/2008, -1/+49And China brings 5 hilariously ugly knockoffs from production to retail stores.
- AmyVernon, on 06/30/2008, -4/+43no, it just means that Steve Jobs is right in deciding not to release the one w/the keyboard. lol!
- ThaDRD, on 07/01/2008, -6/+42I hope not. I like the tactile feedback that allows you to not have to look at the keys to see what you are doing.
I long ago had a touch-screen remote control for my home theater and ditched it because I had to constantly look down to make sure I was touching the right spot to do something like fast-forward.
Even cars have touch screen navigation, but only Alpine has figured out a way to give force feedback. - btschul, on 06/30/2008, -9/+39Steve Jobs explained why they didn't give the iPhone a keyboard in the original keynote. He said they didn't want to be bound by a physical keyboard because then you release an update, and you are stuck with whatever keys are on the physical keyboard. an onscreen keyboard can be changed to do anything you want.
- Freeto114, on 07/01/2008, -1/+26And then about 4 years later, Microsoft tries to fight back.
...Fail. - ThaDRD, on 07/01/2008, -9/+35Yeah, because the QWERTY layout has changed so much since 1874.
- Avian00, on 07/01/2008, -0/+24Well it allowed them to add that convenient ".com" button. And for somebody like me, who switches constantly between two languages, it's great to be able to switch my keyboard layout for the language I'm typing in. Oh, and I really like that half the screen doesn't get wasted with a physical keyboard.
Also, from Apple's perspective, I'm certain it saves on production costs since an international keyboard is simply a matter of a software setting. - willdelaney, on 07/01/2008, -11/+32i like keyboards
you can feel them - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -6/+24I hate the touch thing on the Iphone. With my treo I could type fast without even looking, with the Iphone it requires my undivided attention, and I have to hold the phone in an awkward way that I call the spider grip. And yet, if I lost my iphone today I'd buy a new one tomorrow. Damn you apple.
- shank2001, on 07/01/2008, -1/+17I have to agree, I didn't like the touch keyboard on my iPod Touch at first, but now I can type faster than I can on my windows mobile smart-phone with a real qwerty chicklet keyboard. The secret? practice, and learning to trust the auto correction. Now I am planning on jumping ship from Verizon and replace my stupid/smartphone with the iPhone, and have no worries about the touch keyboard.
- netgeek06, on 07/01/2008, -6/+18keyboard doesn't make sense on a touch phone.
- Steinr, on 07/01/2008, -1/+13PICS !!!! or it didn't happen!!!! how often do we have to repeat this. TheRegister should know better.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/01/2008, -0/+11The good thing about the iPhone's touch keyboard is because it's on the screen, when it's gone you're left with a much bigger screen for the relative small size of the device, and it doesn't add any weight or all important (at least to me) thickness to said phone. The auto-correct is pretty decent too, when you are used to it you can type at a pretty good pace, at least I can.
- headband, on 07/01/2008, -2/+13you never know...I hear they are thinking about adding some letters to the alphabet
- Protoss, on 07/01/2008, -1/+10The hardware may be sexy as hell, but Windows Mobile sucks. I have a HTC Wizard right now and I hate the OS with a passion. There's a reason HTC tries its best to cover up the main OS with Diamond/TouchFlo.
- spanglegluppet, on 07/01/2008, -0/+9It didn't happen...
- dwninjungleland, on 07/01/2008, -0/+9Simple, direct, tech story with no sensationalism, no hidden agenda, no politics, and no gimmicks.
I love the old digg. - nicmae, on 07/01/2008, -3/+12With a keyboard your can write without looking at your iPhone. With the touch system you have to check where you're "touching"
- Skod, on 07/01/2008, -0/+8Why is touch better? (without saying, "it's just better!")
- dragon76, on 07/01/2008, -1/+8The Mac OS has had VERY good voice recognition since 1993. No one wants voice recognition. For very short things like saying "call home" or for people with accessibility needs, voice recognition is good, but do you REALLY want everyone running around issuing voice commands to every device?
- zaqarov, on 07/01/2008, -2/+8that's hardly the point. Not everyone wants QWERTY.
It's way easier to create localized versions (eg China, traditional or simplified, here in Belgium we use AZERTY, I imagine in Russia, people would like cyrillic etc.). On-screen keyboards are excellent for this.
Plus, I'm not confident with the SDK, but 3rd party apps will now be able to create specialized keyboards for their apps, dropping the keys they don't need, and adding others.
I agree that the ideal would be something that is both onscreen and tactile. I'm sure they're working on it, the technology is just not there yet. - LoneWolf01, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6When it gives tactile response, I'll be happy. Look up the Nokia Morph concept.
- adasha, on 07/01/2008, -5/+10Except in any tactile or haptic sense
- andrewxrated, on 06/30/2008, -30/+35we don't need a keyboard, touch is way better in everyway.
- cslawren, on 07/01/2008, -1/+6It's not, I have an ipod touch and its damn near impossible to type anything at a decent speed if you have slightly bigger fingers like I do. Yeah, my speed may have increased slightly since when I got it, but the fact that you can't feel the keys as you're typing leads to many, and often horrible spelling errors. That said, its still a really cool device.
- cslawren, on 07/01/2008, -2/+7I don't know why you're getting dugg down, but I couldn't agree with you more. Apple fanboys are at work I'm guessing.
- 0260, on 07/01/2008, -2/+71. introduce something new and exciting
2. claim its better
3. profit!
4. go back to what everyone else is doing
5. double profit! - hitmikey, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5No pic no care.
- ErikHK, on 07/01/2008, -7/+12Wow, that is a horribly incorrect statement.. Sure, combine touchscreen with tactile feedback keys (read Sony Ericsson P1/M600), and you might have the future. Well, I guess it's just the way of the cult called Apple..
- paranoiabacon, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5Makes me think of 1984. The iPhone always had a keyboard.
- dyranios2, on 07/01/2008, -2/+7uhh real gps?
Everyone says that A-GPS is "real gps" with extra tracking features such as wireless networks etc. That it is superior. - thecompkid, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4Yeah, he does do what he needs to do to sell stuff.
He knows that people don't need two separate physical buttons just to do left/right click.
He knows that the average joe doesn't give a crap about how open the platform is.
He knows that 90% of people just use their computer for internet surfing and maybe a little word processing.
He does _only_ what he needs to do to sell stuff. - jiqiren, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4slow news day huh?
- Duositex, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4Just five? That's not the China I know.
- flipmeat, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4Two button mice have been standard on Macs for over two years now. There are two separate touch sensors under the shell. In fact, you can click the little trackball, so it's a three button mouse. Since Apple is concerned that new users should not have to figure out which button to press, the right click is not enabled by default.
Some game developers have tried to extort money out of Apple because they think Apple 'needs' games. Apple ignores them. EA is gradually porting more titles to Mac, including the free Spore Creature Creator, and later on, Spore itself will be coming. The rest of PC gaming is a reboot away with Boot Camp. When other companies see EA making money, they'll join in.
As for the open platform thing, they have a huge and unfair advantage in controlling the full experience. They will not throw that away. Symbian phones have an open OS - and it's garbage. - MrTea, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4pics or it didn't happen!
- redwallhp, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5Coming soon: The Microsoft TablePhone.
- Faasnat, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5I guess the option then is to come out with a $1,500 iPhone with a built-in Optimus Maximus slide-out keyboard.
- dasdef, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4snob
- zaqarov, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4I guarantee that it is probably .... huh?
- Chirp08, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4I didn't know that about Alpine, if apple implemented ANY kind of feedback for each button press the iphone would be infinitely better. My motorolla v9m will "vibrate" of sorts when you press a wrong or invalid touch key, I wish it did that when I correctly hit the keys instead so I know it worked.
- PrometheusBorn, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4Perhaps I really am mindless... but in my PC days I've bought so many 3rd party things that seemed cool at the time, and ended up not working as advertised, or it would be crippled by something they overlooked just to get it out, that I eventually grew sick of the lack of quality control.
I like the fact that I usually can't go wrong with most of the accessories I can buy for my Apple products. It's not a rule, but it's generally true. Just like i look forward to the fact that Apple is going to put some quality control on the iPhone app store so I don't have to try 10 junk products to get something that's decent. (reliving my PC days, here).
Perhaps I'm an example of an Apple fanboy that it is so popular to flame, but I for one appreciate how much better my computer experience has been since switching to Apple products. And in the end - cheaper and less wasted time.
- umbrellainabin, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4POIIR
(pics or it isn't real) - SteveMax, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4"how about perfect voice recognition"
Wouldn't cut it. I know I type much faster than I can speak. - SwedishNinja, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Right, just like the rumble feature was the way of the past on the PS3 SIXAXIS controller.
- krische, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4The Samsung Instinct has the "haptic feedback" where it vibrates whenever you touch a button on its touch screen. It's certainly felt interesting when I was playing with it at a Sprint store.
