The term is one that author didn't recognize, that's why he had to Google it. It means "sky" in Spanish. Notice the seemingly pointless anecdote about his call getting dropped? The most windy (curvy, not air blowing) road off of Skyline Dr. in San Diego appears to be Cielo Dr.
You heard it from me first... - inactive, on 08/13/2009, -5/+133I would wager It is going to be limited to the app store. In that case it is not a real open computer, just a glorified consumer media box.
- marshalkowski, on 08/13/2009, -2/+109It's called Redacted.
- Rudegar, on 08/13/2009, -9/+103if it runs full osx and got bootcamp option too then my soul is up for grabs
if it runs the same osx version as iphone just bigger and all apps being from app store then meh! - MikeSobe, on 08/13/2009, -5/+76Now I'm curious what the code name is.
- pablocblanco, on 08/13/2009, -1/+59I cant wait until 2010 when im snorting coke off the background image of a strippers ass that I set to this thing.
- ToastPop, on 08/13/2009, -2/+54You seriously like the price range? My Apple fanboyism usually prevents me from being too hard on them, but $700-$900 for what could likely be a modified iPhone OS sounds pretty ridiculous to me. The iPhone OS is amazing no doubt, but as that is the price of a decent PC notebook or netbook, it had better be a lot more functional than the iPhone OS -- say, a slimmed down version of OS X.
- darkism, on 08/13/2009, -0/+45^^ This.
MacBook Air, MobileMe's obsession with cloud infrastructure, "cielo" ... it all makes sense. - inactive, on 08/13/2009, -4/+49"NEWton"
- Phatlip012, on 08/13/2009, -7/+49What was the point of that article exactly? He might as well wrote "I know something you don't know! I know something you don't know!"
- iDoraemon, on 08/13/2009, -4/+34The standard PC's killer app was the spreadsheet in getting it to the mainstream. So far, the current Tablet PCs and Wacom Tablets, while great and offers some decent stylus-input functionality (I use one myself daily), has yet to be adopted by the mainstream.
I'd definitely like to see how Apple overcomes this problem beyond what Tablet PCs already do. Just being a laptop version of an iPhone/iPod Touch just isn't going to cut it, since people won't adopt that over a standard laptop keyboard and mouse/touchpad. And just being an upgraded Amazon Kindle or Sony Reader isn't enough either, since low-end Tablet PCs already do the job just fine and more.
Call me a critic on this one. This has Apple Newton 2.0 written all over it. - ohreilly, on 08/13/2009, -2/+28A modified iPhone OS? So it'll have no features that other tablet PCs have, and it'll be locked down so only Apple-approved applications can be used?
- seventoes, on 08/13/2009, -0/+23Makes sense to me! Apple Cielo it is.
- Phatlip012, on 08/13/2009, -6/+26Why would I want to carry around an oversized iPhone when I could just have one in my pocket. The iPhone OS and app store is awesome- for a phone.
Oversized iPhone != netbook. - nextekcarl, on 08/13/2009, -1/+19Duh, it's [redacted].
- Takuro, on 08/13/2009, -1/+19Blumpkin
- korea, on 08/13/2009, -1/+18I wonder what exactly the process for getting paid by Apple to fake-leak information in order to generate excitement.
- TVarmy, on 08/14/2009, -2/+19Plus, it's the name of an actor who worked in the banana stand on Arrested Development. Apple is a type of fruit, so is a banana. Plus, "There's always money in the banana stand..." Apple likes money.
Also the banana stand burned down, and iPhones sometimes catch fire and explode, too. The pieces are all coming together. - boulderbum, on 08/13/2009, -4/+21I have about every Apple product known to man, but I'll really have to be sold on the utility of a tablet.
I'm sure it won't be as powerful as my desktop or laptop, but it's also less portable than an iPhone, which handles much of the browsing/email/video/apps I want when I'm on the go.
A $700 touchscreen extension to my Mac doesn't seem like a big sell.
Kind of neat, mind you, just not something I'd need or buy. - eagles3, on 08/13/2009, -23/+39Oddly that price range falls exactly within my range. And if I can pass it as an educational cost, even better.
The os should be a modified iPhone OS capable of multitasking, and the SDK should be the same as the iPhones. Some really cool apps could come out of this larger screen, and a secondary screen/touchpad for my MacBook would be really awesome. - lolcoderer, on 08/13/2009, -0/+15That's all well and good reasoning, however I'm willing to bet that the author is based in Silicon Valley - and is referring to Skyline Blvd (also called Skyline Dr.) which goes from San Mateo to Los Gatos. So referring to a road in San Diego (AKA - A Whale's Vagina) as the code name, doesn't make any sense.
- digjam, on 08/13/2009, -2/+17That was F#@$ing [redacted].
- 1Bad, on 08/13/2009, -2/+16GothAlice: And when I buy a computer I think, "I really want a silicon wafer with 32nm component connections seated in a 1366 pin board made of several layers of fiberglass sealed together with epoxy resin and capable of holding, 2 sticks of fiber glass mounted with silicon wafers with a total of 4 billion transistors and resistors, and a series of ferrous discs with a magnetic read head."
Seriously though, you sound ridiculous. - yabos, on 08/13/2009, -2/+16iPad
- KJSatz, on 08/13/2009, -1/+15Dugg for Star Trek wallpaper on the iMac.
- miggon, on 08/13/2009, -5/+18This will make me think hard about buying a second gen Kindle. If I wait for the Mac Tablet, I get much more. But I pay much more.
- enantiodromia, on 08/13/2009, -3/+14the overwhelming number of buries for a simple statement come when i say "i like apple".
if i say "i hate apple", i usually get a lot of diggs.
my experiment re who are the actual fan boys continues. - TVarmy, on 08/14/2009, -2/+13They have that. It's called the iPod touch. It has a smaller screen, but it fits in your pocket just fine.
- masterkenobi, on 08/13/2009, -0/+11JustinLong
- inactive, on 08/14/2009, -0/+10I like turtles.
- azpat, on 08/13/2009, -6/+15If it's as locked down as the iPhone, no thank you. Win7 runs great on a tablet. Touch-PC Tablets are coming in November (I'd assume) and Win7 works great with Multi-touch. While Apple owns the patent for multi-touch on a phone, Microsoft owns it for a computer (I also assume, since they currently make a multi-touch os and Apple hasn't sued them), so it will be interesting to see how this plays out (I also think software patents are crap, but it's crap that will decide how this gets positioned (phone/pc/mediadevice)). At least with Win7 I can install Firefox and Opera. Try doing that on a iPhone.
I'm guessing this will be a media device, like an iPodTV or some such thing, that way they can avoid competing with real Laptops( Both Apple and "PCs"). Because of this artificial distinction, it will be limited in what you are "allowed" by Apple to do on it. Which will blow. If you're also forced to bend over for AT&T, it will really blow. - BlueCadenza, on 08/13/2009, -0/+9Take me...Apple. My soul and body is yours. I have become a part of this community of like minded individuals and have learned to "think different." I have bought your electronics and have deeply made them my own. Apple...I am at one with you.
- tecunx, on 08/13/2009, -1/+10Dugg for Bettie Page.
- tnoy, on 08/13/2009, -0/+9You're probably one of those people that think they drive better when they're drunk.
- pathy, on 08/13/2009, -0/+9I'm confused why you'd buy a tablet for reading e-books, in comparison to a Kindle at least. Get a CrunchPad if that's all you want it for.
- bstock, on 08/13/2009, -2/+11Wow.. that was relevant.
I mean, I agree with you, but it has nothing to do with this article. - inactive, on 08/13/2009, -4/+13i love my pocket sized glorified consumer media box!
I also have it jailbroken, so that it's a lot more than just a pocket sized glorified consumer media box! - jordanknox, on 08/13/2009, -0/+9I absolutely hate to do this, but I have to point out that where you used the word "assume", I think you meant to say "as soon"... as in, "I'd just as soon have a netbook...". I apologize for correcting you, but it's my Grammar Nazism that I hope might someday help someone avoid embarrassment.
- andrejhoward, on 08/13/2009, -3/+11700 to 900 dollars ..... hmmm no thank you
- B1665r, on 08/13/2009, -3/+11No... If this is just a scaled up iPhone then it has Safari Mobile on it, and it is worthless as a web browser for anything but the most trivial of activities. I am sure the Apple faithful will buy them, but apple will continue to hemorage portable marketshare to netbooks.
- TheAbsintheHare, on 08/13/2009, -0/+8Rosetta is already the name of the software that emulates PPC code in Intel versions of OS X
- xfile087, on 08/13/2009, -0/+8That sounds bloody [redacted]
- BlueCadenza, on 08/13/2009, -0/+8If this is going to be a closed system you can forget about using powerful open-source media applications.
- chewitt, on 08/13/2009, -0/+8lolcoderer- yeah, I just guessed on the city. start looking for windy roads! :)
- Sandrew, on 08/13/2009, -1/+8Shot in the dark guess: Cera
...after the portable / reusable writing tablets of antiquity. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax_tablet - tao52nyc, on 08/13/2009, -0/+7As others have suggested: Project name is LCARS, and the final product will be iPad. But I don't see the "ding in the universe" part...yet.
- Thud, on 08/13/2009, -2/+9That price would be about right, but hopefully it's a bit more of a full-fledged computer... i.e. a true Mac Tablet and not a Giant iPod Touch.
However, though I might be tempted to be one of the first to get it, there are bound to be some embarrassing glitches in the first run. Fast forward to February 2010... we'll be seeing the Digg headlines such as:
-Apple refuses to acknowledge [battery|warping|heat|discoloring|display|exploding] issues with iRedacted tablets
And then in April, it'll be safe to buy one, once we start seeing these headlines:
-Apple quietly acknowledges [battery|warping|heat|discoloring|display|exploding] issues with iRedacted tablets - wyzik, on 08/13/2009, -3/+10please let VLC work on this device... yay, media player....
- darkism, on 08/13/2009, -2/+9I'm as big an Apple fan as they come but I'm having a really hard time figuring out why this would be useful or desirable. At all.
